India overtakes Germany to become 4th auto market in the world

CarToq reported that it has come to light that the Indian automobile market has become the fourth-largest in the world. India recently overtook Germany to get into the list of top 4 auto markets globally. The Indian auto industry witnessed sales of 4.02 million units and hence, grew by as much as 9.5% in last one year.

The growth of Indian auto industry in terms of sales volumes has happened over the last few years due to a surge in sales of automobiles. It may be noted that India, which is the third-largest economy in Asia, is the fastest growing major automobile market in the world with a growth rate of 9.5%. In comparison, the German car market, which now stands at the fifth position, has a growth rate of only 2.8%. 3.8 million vehicles were sold in Germany last year. The Japanese car market, which is currently at the third position, enjoys a growth rate of 5.24%. 5.4 million vehicles were sold in Japan in 2016.

Another interesting detail here is that India and Brazil have grown at a similar pace. Many factors have a major role to play in the growth of the Indian car market. Many new companies have come to India in the last few years, thereby giving the consumer many choices. Moreover, the per capita income in India has seen a steady improvement, which has made many to bring home a vehicle. Easy finance options also make it easier for potential buyers to buy a new vehicle. Yet another factor is that of the ever-improving road network.

The largest player in the car market of India has been Maruti Suzuki India Ltd, which enjoys a nearly 50% market share. India is the largest automobile market for Suzuki, both in terms of four-wheelers and two-wheelers. Even other companies, like Hyundai, Tata, Mahindra, and Ford have been doing better numbers than before. The resales market has also grown at a good rate. Statistics show that the used car market in India is at least 2.5 times of the new car market, thereby clearly hinting at the huge number of people who choose to buy a used vehicle. At this rate, India is expected to soon become one of the top 3 car markets in the world.

German new car sales fall 3.5pct in March 2018

Reuters reported that German new car sales fell 3.5 per cent last month from year-earlier levels to about 348,000 vehicles because of two fewer selling days, an auto industry source said. Registrations of passenger cars in Europe's largest auto market still rose 4 percent in the January-to-March period to about 879,000 vehicles, making it the strongest first quarter since 2000.

The source said that sales of diesel-powered vehicles plunged about 20 percent in the first three months of 2018 and held a share of about 39 percent of Germany's car market.

GM replaces Cadillac president after US sales decline

AP reported that General Motors has replaced the head of its Cadillac luxury brand, which has struggled for years to compete against German and Japanese luxury automakers in the US. The company says Steve Carlisle will replace Johan de Nysschen, who is leaving to pursue other opportunities.

Carlisle had been managing director of GM's Canadian operations.

De Nysschen was hired away from Nissan's Infiniti luxury brand with much promise and named president of Cadillac in August of 2014. A few months later he moved the brand's headquarters from Detroit to New York in an effort to give Cadillac more sophistication.

But the move didn't help with buyers. Although sales grew globally, they fell during his tenure in the US, GM's most lucrative market. Sales declined 8 percent last year and dropped another 4.6 percent through March.

Jessica Caldwell, senior analyst for the Edmunds.com car buying website, said de Nysschen bet heavily on the German luxury model of rolling out cars at a time when the market was shifting dramatically toward SUVs. (Edmunds regularly provides content, including automotive tips and reviews, for distribution by The Associated Press.)

In media interviews, de Nysschen talked about the shift coming, but Caldwell said the brand didn't move quickly enough to capitalize on it. Currently Cadillac has only two SUVs on sale, the full-size Escalade and the midsize XT5, with the compact XT4 coming in the fall.

Caldwell said that "When you think about a market that's over half SUVs and you have two, it's not a good place to be. That was a pretty big miss from a financial standpoint."

According to GM, Carlisle led a resurgence of GM brands in Canada, where last year it was the top-seller of vehicles to individual retail buyers.

GM announces USD 16.5 billion revolving credit facility

General Motors Co. announced the execution of an unsecured USD 16.5 billion revolving credit facility that amends and extends GM’s existing USD 14.5 billion revolving credit facility and establishes a new USD 2.0 billion 364-day facility.

The renewed facility consists of a USD 10.5 billion five-year facility, a USD 4.0 billion three-year facility, and a USD 2.0 billion 364-day facility. GM has allocated the USD 2.0 billion 364-day facility for exclusive use by GM Financial. Total available credit to the Automotive segment under the facility remains unchanged at USD 14.5 billion.

A total of 47 financial institutions from 15 countries participated in the broadly syndicated transaction, underscoring the global scope of GM’s operations.

Ferrari levert betere prestaties

MARANELLO (AFN) - De Italiaanse sportwagenfabrikant Ferrari is 2018 begonnen met stijgingen bij de verschepingen, omzet en winst. Dat blijkt uit cijfers van het beroemde sportwagenmerk.

De wereldwijde leveringen stegen met 6 procent tot 2128 sportwagens in vergelijking met een jaar geleden. Daarbij waren vooral bolides met twaalfcilindermotoren populair zoals de 812 Superfast, waarvan de verkoop met bijna een kwart steeg. In alle regio's schroefde Ferrari zijn verkoop op.

De omzet klom met ruim 1 procent tot 831 miljoen euro. Daarbij had het beursgenoteerde bedrijf wel wat tegenwind van wisselkoerseffecten. De nettowinst ging met meer dan 19 procent omhoog tot 149 miljoen euro.

Ferrari denkt dit jaar meer dan 9000 bolides af te leveren en rekent op een omzet van ruim 3,4 miljard euro.

BMW boekt hogere winst ondanks lagere omzet
Duitse autoproducent herhaalt outlook.

(ABM FN) BMW heeft in het eerste kwartaal van 2018 een licht hogere nettowinst geboekt, ondanks een lagere omzet. Dit maakte de Duitse autofabrikant vrijdag bekend.

Het concern sprak zelf van een succesvolle start van het nieuwe jaar. In de eerste drie maanden van het jaar leverde de autofabrikant in totaal 604.629 BMW's, Mini's en Rolls-Royce's af.

BMW boekte in de eerste drie maanden van 2018 een EBIT-resultaat van 2,73 miljard euro, tegenover 2,82 miljard euro in dezelfde periode een jaar eerder. Onder de streep resteerde een 1,2 procent hogere nettowinst van 2,30 miljard euro.

De omzet daalde in het eerste kwartaal met 5,1 procent tot 22,7 miljard euro, met name als gevolg van negatieve wisselkoerseffecten.

In het automotive-segment steeg de EBIT-marge van 9,4 procent naar 9,7 procent.

Outlook

De Duitse autofabrikant herhaalde zijn outlook voor het hele boekjaar en verwacht een lichte stijging van de omzet en het aantal leveringen. BMW verwacht dat de winst voor belasting ten minste gelijk zal zijn aan het voorgaande jaar. De autoproducent verwacht een EBIT-marge van 8 tot 10 procent in het automotive segment.

Ford Motor resuming production of lucrative F-150 trucks

Ford Motor Co said that production of its popular and highly profitable F-150 pickup trucks would resume on Friday at its Dearborn, Michigan, plant, which had been closed for more than a week because of parts shortages caused by a fire at a key supplier. The No. 2 U.S. automaker also said production would resume on Monday at a second F-150 plant in Kansas City, Missouri, as well as its F-series Super Duty truck plant in Louisville, Kentucky.

Ford said that production of the Expedition and Navigator SUVs continues without interruption at Louisville.

The F-150 full-size pickup is the best-selling vehicle in the United States. The vehicle generated USD 41 billion in revenue last year, about 28 percent of total sales and the lion's share of Ford's profits.

In a media briefing on Wednesday, Ford executives said the May 2 fire at the Meridian Magnesium Products plant in Eaton Rapids, Michigan, affected several automakers, but its team was the first to enter the fire-damaged plant "while it was still smoldering."

Working with Meridian and other suppliers, Ford said it moved 19 dies - used to shape magnesium parts - out of the Eaton Rapids plant in 30 hours. After inspecting and repairing the dies, Ford said some portions of the Eaton Rapids facility were able to restart production.

Europe car sales speed up in April

AFP reported that car sales in the top European markets rose sharply in April, confounding fears that a slowdown in the eurozone's recovery might put the brakes on the continent's vehicle industry. The European Automobile Manufacturers Association said in a statement that "In April 2018, the EU passenger car market showed a strong return to growth (+9.6%) after demand declined in March."

The Spanish car market grew the fastest - by 12.3 percent - followed by the UK at 10.4 percent, France at 9 percent, Germany at 8 percent and Italy at 6.5 percent, data published by the association showed.

In total, over 1.3 million new cars hit Europe's roads in April, it added.

German mammoth Volkswagen, Europe's biggest carmaker, saw its sales surge 13.8 percent despite the dieselgate emissions scandal.

The group's Audi brand recorded a slight decrease in sales, though the Volkswagen brand jumped 19.6 percent.

Seat - which is especially popular in Spain -- saw an increase of 25.8 percent while luxury brand Porsche surged 12.8 percent.

French auto giant PSA, the continent's second-biggest car manufacturer, recorded a 70 percent gain thanks to the merger of Opel Vauxhall with Peugeot and Citroen, while Renault sales rose 9.7 percent.

From January to April, the European car market grew 2.7 percent, with only Britain recording a drop of -8.8 percent for the first few months of the year, in a sign that Brexit fears are denting consumer confidence in the UK.

The association said that "Overall, 5,478,442 new passenger cars were registered in the EU during the first four months of the year."

German car sales plunge in May as diesel falls out of favour

AFP reported that sales of new cars in Germany plunged in May, official figures showed, dragged lower by public holidays and mounting uncertainty about the future of scandal-plagued diesel. A total of 305,057 new cars hit German roads last month, the KBA federal vehicle licensing authority said, a drop of 5.8 per cent YoY.

Of those, just 95,000 cars were diesels, a number more than 27 per cent lower than a year before.

Diesel's ongoing slide came as Hamburg became the first German city last month to ban older diesels from two stretches of road to combat air pollution, with other cities mulling similar restrictions.

Diesel's reputation has lain in tatters ever since Volkswagen admitted in 2015 to installing software in millions of diesel vehicles worldwide designed to dupe emissions tests.

Since then, concerns about pollution and the falling resale value of diesels have seen consumers turn away from the once popular technology.

Whereas diesels still accounted for around 45 per cent of all car sales in 2016, that share fell to 38 per cent in 2017 and the decline has continued into 2018.

But industry bodies said the car sector remained in good health, pointing out that overall car sales from January to May were up 2.6 per cent compared with the same period a year earlier.

The VDIK foreign carmakers' association said in a statement that May's dip in registrations was partly down to a string of public holidays that kept dealerships closed.

VDIK president Mr Reinhard Zirpel, said that "The German passenger car market continues to be in solid shape, even though public holidays and long weekends have somewhat slowed down the momentum."

Mr Zirpel said that "The falling diesel registrations are overcompensated by vehicles with alternative or petrol engines."

According to the KBA, cars offering more environmentally friendly engines gained ground in May, with sales of electric and hybrid vehicles jumping more than 50 per cent to around 12,000 units sold.

Meer automakers uiten kritiek op heffingen

WASHINGTON (AFN/BLOOMBERG) - Hyundai en BMW hebben zich aangesloten bij de reeks automakers wereldwijd die waarschuwen voor de gevolgen van importheffingen op auto's en auto-onderdelen door de Verenigde Staten. Het Zuid-Koreaanse en het Duitse autoconcern produceren ook auto's in de VS en zeggen dat de banen die daarmee gemoeid zijn in gevaar komen door de handelssancties van president Donald Trump.

Hyundai noemde de heffingen ,,verwoestend" voor het bedrijf én voor zijn Amerikaanse activiteiten. Ook komen aanvullende investeringen erdoor onder druk te staan. BMW benadrukte dat zijn investering van 9 miljard dollar in een BMW-fabriek in de VS over de hele breedte goed is voor 120.000 banen.

Vrijdag uitte General Motors (GM), de grootste Amerikaanse autofabrikant, al kritiek op de heffingen. Die kunnen volgens GM namelijk leiden tot vergelding van andere landen en banenverlies bij GM op de Amerikaanse thuismarkt.

Lobbyisten

De kritiek van GM is opmerkelijk, omdat het door Mary Barra geleide concern zich meestal op de vlakte houdt over politiek en onderhandelingen met Washington doorgaans overlaat aan lobbyisten. Analisten zien in de uitspraken dan ook een bewijs hoe ernstig de situatie voor GM kan uitpakken.

Peter Navarro, een belangrijke handelsadviseur van Trump, noemde de woorden van GM echter misleidend. De impact van de heffingen zou door het autobedrijf overdreven worden. Trump zou zich verraden voelen door GM en motorfietsmaker Harley-Davidson, dat eerder al zei productie te verplaatsen naar het buitenland vanwege de heffingen, omdat de president ze had geholpen met belastingverlagingen.

BMW to recall vehicles over fuel tank defect in China

IANS reported that BMW Brilliance Automobile, a joint venture between luxury car maker BMW and Chinese car maker Huachen Auto Group, will recall 148 vehicles in China due to defective fuel tanks, a market watchdog said. Xinhua quoted a company statement as saying that the recall involves models including the 118i series, 120i series and 125i series, which were produced between June 9 and 17, 2017.

The statement said that the flaw with the fuel tanks could cause oil leaks that could increase the risks of fire.

However, the companies will examine the recalled vehicles and replace the defective fuel tanks free of charge. The recall will begin on July 23.

Trump Trade War - Would put US jobs at risk - BMW

Sputnik reported that the German car giant issued the gloomy warning in response to the US president's recent threat to hit European cars and trucks with tariffs. German car manufacturer BMW has offered its point of view on the ongoing transatlantic trade standoff in which the United States and the European Union have hit each other with a raft of tariffs.

In a letter seen by AFP, BMW told President Mr Donald Trump's trade minister, Wilbur Ross, that additional taxes on cars would have far-reaching consequences on investments and jobs in America. The company said that it adds USD 15.77 billion to the US economy, employing over 120,000 people directly and indirectly.

BMW recalled that the US's openness to trade encouraged it to open a 10,000-job factory in South Carolina, adding that the facility adds $6.3 billion to the US economy a year.

BMW's statement comes amid an ongoing tariff war between the US and EU. Donald Trump threatened to put a 20 percent tariff on European automobile imports if the EU doesn't remove its own trade barriers.

GM's vehicle sales rise 0.7pct YoY for April-June 2018 in China

General Motors Co's vehicle sales in China increased 0.7 percent in the April-June period from the same period a year earlier to 858,344 vehicles.

The Detroit automaker has stopped reporting monthly China vehicle sales, saying the monthly snapshot does not accurately reflect the market. The company now issues sales reports only on a quarterly basis.

In the first-half of 2018, GM and its local Chinese joint venture partners posted record sales, selling 1.84 million vehicles, up 4.4 percent from the first-half a year ago.

Carmaker PSA seeks partial sale of Opel R&D unit - Le Monde

Reuters reported that Carmaker PSA is looking to sell part of the research and development arm of its Opel affiliate as part of efforts to restore profitability to the loss-making unit, Le Monde newspaper reported. The newspaper said that PSA and Opel had already sounded automobile engineering firms over the last few months so that they can submit offers for four sections of the unit that are valued at about EUR 500 million in total.

It said four firms, Altran, Akka and Segula, all French, and German company Bertrandt had been approached. Citing an internal document from mid-May, the newspaper said the sale would cover Vehicle Engineering, Propulsion Engineering, Tool & Die Operations and the test centre.

The sections employ about 3,980 people, including at Opel's historic headquarters in Russelsheim, and according to the document the sale could happen by the year-end.

PSA said in a statement that "No decisions have been taken yet."

AMSTERDAM (AFN/DPA) - Automaker Ford roept in Europa verschillende modellen terug wegens technische problemen met de koppeling. Ook in Nederland moeten auto’s van het merk terug naar de garage, maar hoeveel auto's kon een woordvoerder niet direct zeggen. In Duitsland zou het om 190.000 auto’s gaan.

De koppeling bij bepaalde modellen van de C-MAX, Focus, Galaxy, Kuga, Mondeo en S-Max kan gaan slippen, meldt de Nederlandse wegverkeersdienst RDW. Dit beïnvloedt de snelheid en rijprestaties van de voertuigen. In extreme gevallen kunnen delen van de koppeling loslaten en onder de motorkap terechtkomen.

Eerder deze week meldde Ford al dat 550.000 auto's in de VS terug naar de garage moeten wegens een ander defect. Door een probleem met de transmissie kunnen wagens in een andere versnelling staan dan het lijkt. Zo kan een auto gekoppeld zijn terwijl het lijkt of hij op de parkeerstand staat.

DETROIT (AFN) - De Amerikaanse autofabrikant General Motors (GM) verlaagt zijn winstverwachting voor het hele jaar, vanwege de oplopende prijzen van staal en aluminium. Ook kampt de grootste autobouwer van de Verenigde Staten met tegenwind door negatieve wisselkoerseffecten in Zuid-Amerika.

Volgens GM zal de aangepaste winst per aandeel dit jaar uitkomen op 6 dollar, terwijl eerder op een winst van 6,50 dollar per aandeel werd gerekend. In het tweede kwartaal ging de winst uit voortgezette activiteiten met bijna 3 procent omlaag tot 2,4 miljard dollar. De omzet daalde licht tot 36,8 miljard vergeleken met een jaar geleden.

Ondanks de uitdagingen door gestegen grondstofkosten en wisselkoerseffecten sprak bestuursvoorzitter Mary Barra van solide resultaten en sterke fundamenten voor het bedrijf uit Detroit. GM wees op de groeiende verkopen op de Amerikaanse thuismarkt en de recordverkoop in China.

PSA Group profit in H1 surges

Reuters quoted French carmaker PSA Group as saying that H1 earnings rose 18 percent, beating analyst expectations, as it returned the newly acquired Opel-Vauxhall business to profit. Net income rose to EUR 1.481 billion as revenues jumped 40 percent to EUR 38.6 billion, the Peugeot maker said in a statement.

Chief Financial Officer Jean-Baptiste de Chatillon told reporters on a call "The turnaround of Opel-Vauxhall is now clearly underway."

The business acquired last year from General Motors posted a 502 million profit amounting to a 5 percent profit margin, while the French group's existing automotive business lifted profitability to 8.5 percent.

The group's overall recurring operating profit rose by almost half to EUR 3.02 billion.
