Volkswagen ID.R Sets New Electric Record On The Nürburgring

Volkswagen has achieved another milestone in electro-mobility: The ID.R, powered by two electric motors, lapped the Nürburgring-Nordschleife in 6:05.336 minutes faster than any electric vehicle before it. Romain Dumas beat the previous record set by Peter Dumbreck in 2017 by 40.564 seconds. With an average speed of 206.96 km/h, the ID.R once again underlined the impressive performance capabilities of Volkswagen’s electric drive. This 500 kW (680 PS) emission-free race car is the racing flagship of the future fully electric ID. product family from Volkswagen.

Mr Herbert Diess, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen Group said that “The Nordschleife of the Nürburgring is not only the world’s most demanding race track, it is also the ultimate test for production vehicles. The ID.R has mastered this challenge with great distinction and has completed the fastest emission-free lap of all time. As further proof of its impressive performance capabilities, Volkswagen’s e-mobility can now proudly call itself ‘Nürburgring-approved’. I congratulate the team from Volkswagen Motorsport and driver Romain Dumas on the third record for the ID.R”

Within just twelve months, Volkswagen Motorsport has already set three track records with the ID.R. On 24 June 2018, Romain Dumas achieved the absolute track record of 7:57.148 minutes at the renowned Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (USA). Just three weeks later, he achieved a new best time for electric cars of 43.86 seconds at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in southern England. The new record on the legendary Nordschleife has now been added to this successful run.

Zweedse accufabriek Northvolt start Europese productie accucellen

Volkswagen Deliveries In May Present A Mixed Picture

In May, the Volkswagen brand delivered 512,100 vehicles worldwide, 5.1% fewer than in May 2018. There was a mixed picture in the regions: while deliveries by the brand in North America (+8.6%), South America (+5,4%) and the individual market of Germany (+2.2%) rose, there was, as expected, a fall in Europe (-6.1%). The situation in China remained unchanged. In May, Volkswagen succeeded in increasing its market share in a shrinking overall market.

Volkswagen Sales Board Member Mr Jurgen Stackmann said that “In terms of deliveries, May was a month of highs and lows for Volkswagen. In North and South America, our model policy is being rewarded by outstanding delivery figures. As expected, deliveries in Europe remained under the record value for the previous year, which was boosted by strong advance buying effects as a result of WLTP. This will also be the case in June as we have not had to take any special measures in the first half of the year. In view of the high volume of orders received and an improvement in delivery capabilities for petrol engines, we continue to expect a strong second half for the brand in Europe.”

Deliveries in the regions and markets in May developed as follows:
In Europe, the Volkswagen brand delivered 157,500 vehicles, 6.1% down on the record value for the same month last year. In Western Europe, there was a decrease of 5.5% to 134,500 vehicles.

The highlight was the home market of Germany, where 53,700 vehicles were handed over to customers in May, representing a rise of 2.2%. The SUV models T-Roc, T-Cross and Touareg continue to be very popular.

As in Western Europe, Volkswagen also recorded a fall in vehicle deliveries in Central and Easter Europe. The brand closed the month with a drop of 9.4% to a total of 23,000 vehicles delivered.

The North America region continued to develop positively for Volkswagen. Despite a shrinking overall market, the brand delivered 54,400 vehicles, a rise of 8.6%over May 2018. The USA made the greatest contribution to this success. In the largest single market in the region, the brand delivered 35,700 vehicles, 14.4% more than the same month last year. In May, the Tiguan was once again the most successful Volkswagen model, while the Atlas recorded the strongest month since its market launch. In Canada too, Volkswagen delivered more vehicles than in May 2018 (+6.6%). With a fall of 6% to 10,700 vehicles, Mexico had little impact on this success.

In South America, Volkswagen achieved positive overall results in May. The brand delivered 44,300 vehicles, a rise of 5.4% compared with the same month last year. This was mainly due to the largest single market of Brazil, where Volkswagen handed 36,500 vehicles over to customers in May, a rise of 29.8%. The strength of the Volkswagen brand in Brazil was also sufficient to compensate for the decline of 60.1% to 4,100 vehicles in Argentina. Here, the general economic situation remained difficult, with a severely shrinking overall market.

In the Asia-Pacific region, Volkswagen delivered 245,400 vehicles, down 8.0% on May 2018. The situation in China, the brand’s largest single market, remained unchanged in May. In an overall shrinking market Volkswagen handed 233,900 vehicles over to customers (-7%) and therefore succeeded in increasing its market share.

Volkswagen To Launch New ID.3

Volkswagen will launch production of the ID.3 before the year is out. The compact-class model is the first member of the ID. family a new generation of progressive electric vehicles whose lithium-ion batteries will allow for a range of up to 550 kilometres, making the models perfect for comfortable long journeys. The future owners of ID. models won’t need to worry about the durability of their batteries either, as Volkswagen will guarantee that the batteries will retain at least 70% of their usable capacity even after eight years or 160,000 kilometres.

Mr Frank Blome, Head of the Centre of Excellence in Salzgitter said that “Our goal is to make sure the batteries last as long as the cars.”

Volkswagen will offer the ID. batteries in different sizes. This marks a completely new departure as compared to the approach taken with the brand’s current range of electric vehicles. If an owner of an ID. vehicle is not really interested in being able to drive long distances (for example because they mainly only drive short distances in a city), they can opt for a battery with a relatively low energy content. This, in turn, will make their vehicle less expensive. Those who frequently drive long distances, on the other hand, can choose a larger battery, which will make them more flexible in terms of how they use their car. Depending on the battery and vehicle type in question, a maximum range of approx. 330 to 550 kilometres can be achieved. Volkswagen also designed the batteries to be able to accommodate a charging capacity of up to 125 kW, which is higher than anything achieved to date in the ID.3 segment and ensures fast charging and shorter charging stops.

Volkswagen With New Software Unit

Volkswagen AG intends to group more than 5,000 digital experts together in its new “Car.Software” unit with Group responsibility for software in the vehicle by 2025. The company plans to develop significantly more software in the car and for vehicle-related services itself and to boost the in-house share of software development from the current figure of less than 10 percent to at least 60% by 2025. In future, there is to be one uniform software platform with all the basic functions for all vehicles throughout the Group. This will consist of the vehicle operating system “vw.os” and the Volkswagen Automotive Cloud. By 2025, all new Group models are to run on this software platform. The first vehicle based on this software platform will be the ID.31), which is to make its world debut at the IAA International Motor Show this year. Currently, more than 20,000 potential customers have registered for the pre-booking of this model.

Currently, up to 70 control units with operating software from 200 different suppliers need to be integrated in Volkswagen brand vehicles. In addition, there are different systems with similar functions within the Group, for example for infotainment and navigation. One uniform operating system with the same basic functions for all brands and the use of the Volkswagen Automotive Cloud for all Group models will considerably simplify the situation.

The same applies to the brands’ “digital ecosystems” which will be used for offering the services. All the brands need certain basic services, for example a simple search function for electric charging stations. At Volkswagen Passenger Cars, this service is called “We Charge”. For example, the basic functions “search for nearby stations” or “pay with different modes of payment” could be standardized for all brands.

With its standard software platform, Volkswagen is aiming to achieve significant economies of scale. In future, the vehicle fleet will include more than 10 million fully connected new vehicles per year, which will significantly reduce the cost of integrating the software in each individual vehicle. At the same time, digital ecosystems with a growing number of vehicles connected will become increasingly attractive for new partners and new customers.

By 2025, Volkswagen intends to group more than 5,000 experts in competence areas such as software development, electrical and electronics development, connectivity, automated driving, user experience, cloud architecture and e-commerce together in an agile “Car.Software” unit. They will work in five key areas and develop packages extending across the brands.

The objective is to orient the unit towards the requirements of innovative software development. For this purpose, Volkswagen will be contributing flexible working models, the latest collaboration technologies and agile types of cooperation. This year, about 500 experts are to work together in this agile software unit. The figure is already due to rise to about 2,000 by 2020.

In addition to grouping together experts from brands and companies within the Group, Volkswagen intends to boost the workforce especially by recruiting new specialists and consolidating strategic participations and acquisitions. It is intended to actively present the new software unit and to target IT and tech experts.

Volkswagen & Schwarz Group To Be Strategic E-Partners

Shortly before the market launch of its full-electric car sharing service WeShare in Berlin at the end of June, Volkswagen has concluded a strategic partnership with the Lidl and Kaufland supermarket chains, which are owned by the Schwarz Group. The food retailers are to install 140 public charging stations for the electric vehicles of their customers at 60 Lidl and 10 Kaufland branches in the German capital. Volkswagen is to receive the exclusive right to use the new infrastructure for charging its WeShare fleet overnight outside opening hours, which will make the utilization of the charging stations more efficient. The additional charging points at Lidl and Kaufland outlets will boost the public charging infrastructure in Berlin by almost 20 percent.

Mr Christian Senger, Member of the Board of Management of the Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand responsible for Digital Car and Services, said that “Supermarkets are the filling stations of the future. Charging while you shop is an ideal solution. On average, just 45 minutes at a fast charging station are sufficient for an e-Golf1). Together with Lidl and Kaufland, we are improving charging possibilities for customers and especially for our WeShare fleet. This is the next consistent step by Volkswagen in its efforts to provide area-wide coverage with charging points in public spaces via partnership arrangements.”

Mr Wolf Tiedemann, Head of Central Services, Lidl Deutschland commented that “We want to shape urban mobility. With our many locations on major traffic nodes in Berlin, we can develop a city-wide network of charging stations. During the daytime, our customers will benefit from the growing number of charging points and we will make a meaningful contribution to the mobility transition in Germany.”

Mr Jörg Dahlke, Head of International Construction with Kaufland said that “Car sharing with electric vehicles definitely needs to be supported. This is why we are very pleased to make our existing charging stations available to the WeShare fleet outside our opening hours. This way, more people will benefit from this environmentally compatible technology. This is entirely in line with our own e-mobility strategy.”

Volkswagen’s charging strategy is based on the assumption that about 50% of charging operations for electric cars will be carried out by customers at home in future, 20% at the place of work, 5% along highways and no less than 25% in public spaces. Volkswagen is already equipping private homes and workplaces with charging systems via its recently established subsidiary Elli and is working towards the development of a fast charging network on major European highways under the IONITY umbrella.

Volkswagen Opens Carbon Neutral Data Center In Norway

The Volkswagen Group moved into a new, climate neutral data center at Rjukan in Norway. The facility was set up in just six months in collaboration with the Norwegian partner Green Mountain. The data center will be 100 per-cent powered by hydropower in the future, thus saving more than 5,800 tons of CO2 per year compared to a conventionally operated data center. The maximum output of 2,750 kilowatts will be used by the Volkswagen Passenger Cars and AUDI brands for high-performance servers, on which computer-intensive vehicle development projects are processed. These include the simulation of crash tests and virtual wind tunnel tests. The Volkswagen Group focuses on economic and ecological factors in the development of additional computing capacity. Volkswagen already operates a climate neutral data center in Iceland.

The servers will be used to process computer-intensive vehicle development projects.

In future, the computing power of the new location will be used by the Volkswagen Passenger Cars and AUDI brands for their vehicle development projects. These include simulations of crash tests and virtual wind tunnel tests. Such calculations are not time critical, but very complex and energy intensive. Outsourcing them to external data centers hugely relieves the IT infrastructure at domestic locations.

Spookauto's

Volkswagen Group Further Expand CNG Mobility

Volkswagen Group and its industry partners from the gas supply, network, and filling station operation sectors will showcase their products and services at the 3rd CNG Mobility Days in Berlin (25–26 June 2019), presenting an overview of the current situation and the future of CNG. Volkswagen Group brands will also be exhibiting their latest CNG models in the passenger car, truck and bus segments.

In parallel with the advancing electrification of its fleet, Volkswagen Group and its brands continue to rely on CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) as an alternative drive technology for decarbonizing road transport, and the product range has been revised and expanded again with this in mind.

Volkswagen Group currently offers the widest selection of CNG vehicles of any manufacturer, by a substantial margin. At the annual general meeting in mid-May 2019, Herbert Diess, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG, announced that CNG will continue to play an important role for the Group in the future: “We are the global market leader for gas drive systems, and better positioned than our competitors. We also plan to continue further expanding and improving this technology.”

Using CNG as an energy source for automobiles meaningfully contributes to reducing emissions, as well as representing a cost-efficient customer alternative to petrol and diesel.

Mr Stephen Neumann, Volkswagen Group Representative for CNG Mobility said that “Volkswagen is committed to the Paris Climate Agreement. CNG has an important role to play in the alternative drive systems strategy that runs alongside the Group’s electrification offensive. It is sufficiently proven, immediately available, efficient and cost-effective. Furthermore, CNG cars are not affected by driving bans in city centres.” He added that “Refuelling with biomethane or e-gas results in an even better CO2 balance. Biomethane is obtained from organic residues, while e-gas is produced from excess green electricity (power-to-gas). Both can easily be fed into the gas network and mixed with any amount of fossil natural gas.”

Volkswagen Supervisory Board - Conny Schönhardt succeeds Birgit Dietze

There will be a change to the composition of employee representation on the Supervisory Board of Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft. Conny Schönhardt who took on responsibility for Strategic and Political Planning on the management board of IG Metall in January 2019, is taking Birgit Dietze’s seat on the Supervisory Board as of 21 June 2019.

The two trade union representatives have already worked on tasks together in the VW employee representative committees over recent months. This included the assumption by Conny Schönhardt of responsibility in the trade union as company representative for Volkswagen and AUDI at the beginning of 2019.

Mr Jörg Hofmann, Chairman of IG Metall and Deputy Chairman of the Supervisory Board said that “Birgit Dietze’s term on the Supervisory Board coincided with eventful times, that were extremely challenging. The employee representatives thank Birgit for her valuable contribution, which Conny Schönhardt will undoubtedly build on going forward. Conny, with her specialism in pay scales, training and qualification, is assuming this office at exactly the right moment.”

Assuming duties in the Group constitutes a return to the company for Ms Schönhardt, who had worked here previously for several years. She concluded a commercial apprenticeship at VW Commercial Vehicles in the mid-1990s and then worked on the assembly line.

Aandeel truckdivisie VW gaat 27 euro kosten

Volkswagen Group Commits Suppliers To Sustainability

As of 1st July 2019, the Volkswagen Group will introduce a worldwide Sustainability Rating for its suppliers. This enables the company to assess the sustainability conduct of its business partners in its supply chain with regard to risks relating to human rights, environmental protection and corruption. Dr Stefan Sommer, Board Member for Components and Procurement, said “We are convinced that a sustainable supplier network is a guarantee of long-term corporate success. Sustainability is becoming a decisive business factor”.

In a Sustainability Rating, the suppliers first provide a self-assessment of their sustainability conduct on the basis of a questionnaire and documents supplied. The data and documents are checked by qualified third parties. In case of doubt, on-site checks are carried out. If misconduct occurs in the areas of environmental/social affairs or corruption, these lead to exclusion from the award of contracts.

The sustainability requirements are described in the Volkswagen Group’s new “Code of Conduct for Business Partners”, which is binding for all companies in the supply chain. It refers to respect for human rights, compliance with occupational health and safety, environmental protection and the fight against corruption.
