GW of New Offshore Wind Capacity Installed Globally in 2019

The latest data released by the Global Wind Energy Council shows that the global offshore wind industry added 6.1GW of offshore wind capacity in 2019, a record year for the industry and an impressive 35.5 per cent increase on the previous year, which saw 4.5GW installed. This growth is set to accelerate, with GWEC Market Intelligence’s preliminary forecasts finding that an additional 50 GW of new offshore wind capacity could be installed by 2024 globally. This would mean that total installed offshore wind capacity could reach nearly 80 GW globally over the next five years, an increase of almost 172 per cent from today’s capacity.

Eight markets reported new offshore wind installations in 2019:
China – 2395 MW
United Kingdom – 1764 MW
Germany – 1111 MW
Denmark – 374 MW
Belgium – 370 MW
Taiwan – 120 MW
Portugal – 8 MW (floating)
Japan – 3 MW (floating)

GWEC CEO Ben Backwell sad “In 2019, we continued to see the strong growth trend of offshore wind, which now makes up 10 per cent of total wind energy installations. While mature markets in Europe continue to account for the majority of these installations, Asia Pacific is now increasingly contributing to this growth, with China leading the way as the global offshore wind leader in new capacity. It is also exciting to see floating wind capacity being installed in 2019, as once this technology reaches industrial scale, it will open up whole new markets and opportunities for offshore wind. Offshore wind is a huge opportunity to meet our climate targets, as it can replace expensive imported fuels, provide clean energy solutions to countries that have limited for land availability, and supply increasingly competitive zero-carbon energy at a massive scale. The economic benefits of offshore wind cannot be understated, with the potential to generate of hundreds of billions of dollars in investments, create tens of thousands of jobs and build a supply chain that can all contribute to thriving local economies.”

Total Enters Floating Offshore Wind Project in UK

Total has positioned itself on the floating offshore wind segment in line with its strategy to develop renewable energy. The Group has signed an agreement with the developer Simply Blue Energy to acquire 80% stake in the pioneering floating wind project Erebus located in the Celtic Sea, in Wales. The project will have a 96 megawatts capacity and will be installed in an area with water depth of 70 meters. This makes Total one of the first movers in this technology in the UK, the world’s largest offshore wind market.

While offshore wind has so far mainly developed in shallow water depths based on fixed bottom technology, floating wind offshore is set for strong growth in the years to come. This emerging technology has wide potential, opening access to sites further offshore, which have less impact on the landscape, and benefit from very high wind resources.

Norway Approves Hywind Tampen Wind Farm

Norway’s Ministry of Petroleum and Industry has approved the plans for development and operation of the Hywind Tampen wind farm. The Snorre and Gullfaks platforms will be the first platforms in the world to receive power from a floating offshore wind farm. On 11 October 2019, Equinor and the Snorre and Gullfaks partners submitted two updated plans for development and operation to Norwegian authorities. By reducing the use of gas turbines on the fields, the project will help reduce CO2 emissions by more than 200,000 tons per year, corresponding to annual emissions from 100,000 private cars.

The Hywind Tampen investment will be close to NOK 5 billion. Norwegian authorities have granted funding of up to NOK 2.3 billion through Enova. The Business Sector’s NOx fund has decided to support the project by up to NOK 566 million.

The wind farm will consist of 11 wind turbines based on the Hywind wind farm concept developed by Equinor. The 8 MW turbines will have a total capacity of 88 MW and meet about 35 per cent of the annual power demand of the five platforms Snorre A and B and Gullfaks A, B and C. The wind farm will be located around 140 kilometers from shore, between the Snorre and Gullfaks platforms, at a water depth of 260 to 300 meters.

Operated from Equinor’s offices in Bergen, Hywind Tampen is scheduled for start-up at the end of 2022.

‘We slikken zware verliezen.’

Vestas Suspends Guidance for 2020

Since the outbreak of COVID-19, Vestas has taken measures to ensure the safety of its employees and reasonably mitigate the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on its operations. The spread of the virus globally and the national measures implemented to contain it have eventually, however, caused disruptions to Vestas’ manufacturing, supply chain, and installations. It said “Preliminary numbers indicate that the results for first quarter are in line with expectations. Furthermore, the total order intake for the quarter amounts to 3.3 GW. From the limited impact on this quarter seen in isolation, achieving the outlook for 2020 is still realistic. However, there is no longer adequate visibility for the rest of the year, and hence Vestas is at the moment not able to confidently give guidance on Vestas’ full-year performance. Due to this uncertainty, especially in regard to the duration of the pandemic and the full extent of the consequences thereof globally, Vestas now suspends its full-year guidance. As soon as the company deems that it is capable of giving new estimates for the full-year results, Vestas will disclose updated guidance.”

Proposed dividend for 2019 will not be affected by the decision to suspend guidance.

Vestas has taken a series of measures to ensure the health and safety of its employees all over the world and to ensure business continuity, in dialogue with suppliers, partner, and customers. Vestas follows the recommendations and guidelines from health authorities and international health organisations such as WHO and International SOS. The company will continue to monitor the situation closely and to develop and implement contingency plans as the pandemic evolves.

At this moment, Vestas’ factories in China have returned to normal operation and Vestas is working to mitigate the impact of lost production time through the company's global footprint, including using the capacity in China to mitigate challenges in other parts of the world, where restrictions and disruptions are now seen to an increasing degree.

Siemens Gamesa Scores Hat Trick in Sweden with RES Deal

Siemens Gamesa’s success in the Swedish market continues after the company secured its third deal in the country for its powerful Siemens Gamesa 5.X next generation platform. The company will supply the world’s largest independent renewable energy company, RES, with 13 wind turbines SG 5.8-155 for the Rodene project near Alingsas, totaling 85.8 MW. The new deal takes the order intake for this turbine platform in the country to 363 MW and strengthens the relationship with RES, which Siemens Gamesa has supplied with over 4.4 GW of capacity since 2000. The Rodene project will be developed in a forest area with medium speed winds and rather high wind turbulences, which is testament to the capabilities of the SG 5.8-155 in such environments. The 13 wind turbines will be installed in 2021 and will be covered by a 15-year full-service agreement. Additionally, in order to maximize energy yield, a tailored solution has been developed including two tower heights and the OptimaFlex technology to operate the wind turbines at up to 6.6 MW.

The third deal for the Siemens Gamesa 5.X in Sweden, one of the most dynamic and sophisticated wind markets in the world, highlights the outstanding performance of a platform that combines the best of the company’s engineering schools, producing a technologically superior wind turbine built on proven solutions. The platform will be also installed in the Skaftaasen (231 MW) and Knostad (46 MW) projects.

The Siemens Gamesa 5.X is the most powerful geared onshore wind turbine in the world and boasts the largest rotor diameters, 155 and 170 meters, resulting in maximum performance in high-, medium and low-wind conditions. A single 5.8-155 can power over 5,500 European homes for a year and avoid the emissions equivalent to taking off the roads 11,000 diesel cars.

Northwester 2 Completes Turbine Installation of First 9.5MW Platform

In a joint operation with MHI Vestas and Jan De Nul Group, Parkwind completed the final installation of turbines at the Northwester 2 offshore wind farm. The 219 MW project is located in the Belgian North Sea, approximately 50km off the shore of Ostend, Belgium, and is the first project to use the world’s highest rated V164-9.5 MW turbines in commercial operation. The installation works started in December 2019. Following a good start, exceptionally adverse weather in the first months slowed the pace of the installation works down. To accelerate operations, a second installation vessel, the Scylla, was brought in mid-March to operate in parallel with Jan De Nul’s Vole au vent. All parties have closely worked together in a professional manner to overcome challenges and succeeded to maintain operational control until completion of the last WTG installation.

MHI Vestas also holds a 15 year service agreement at Northwester 2, to maintain the V164-9.5 MW turbines.

Northwester 2 was installed on an expedited schedule, due to a highly collaborative approach being taken, supply chain readiness, and the industrialisation of offshore wind in Belgium.
