geduld
"US permanent layoffs surge as payroll surprise disguises permanent labour market damage"
Nonfarm payrolls rose by 4.8 mn in June , much higher than consesus of 3.2 mn as lockdowns ease
However a far more important development was the surge in permanent layoffs, now we are at the biggest loss of jobs since the height of the great recession in January 2009
permanent layoffs are at the highest since July 2014, and so essentially erasing 6 years of labour market gains in the space of e few months
we expect permanent layoffs to continue to rise, while we expect headline payrolls to be positive as long as lockdowns ease
the present resurgent pandemic poses additional downside risks to growth, with unsustainable rises in hospital admissions in some states - some restrictions could be expected again
for the time being, we do not view the new restrictions as significant enough to change forecasts, but this would change should restrictions persists, or if they need to be tightened significantly further.
