Alstom (buy, TP 55 EUR) this morning announced that it had secured a EUR190 million order to provide SNCF with 12 four-car dual mode electric-hydrogen trains (plus an additional two operational trainsets). The French government is noted to be contributing EUR47 million towards the development costs.
With this order Alstom is able to demonstrate that hydrogen trains are becoming a viable commercial solution and with that, it is also able to demonstrate its leadership in this new technology.
Although still a very small part of the Rail industry and of Alstom's business today, there has been a clear pick up in large hydrogen plans (particularly in Europe) over the past 12-18 months as policy shifts such as the European Hydrogen Strategy put a focus on the market potential. Countries such as Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and France have either ordered hydrogen trains or trialled them for future use and Alstom has an active partnership with Eversholt Rail in the UK to convert trains to hydrogen as electrifying the lines has been deemed too expensive. In terms of the economics vs electric rail, Alstom discussed that it varies depending on the local geography, network and policies in place – for example in Canada where there are very few rail lines, electrification may be a viable option, but in Europe where the rail network is very extensive, the cost of electrifying thousands of km of track cannot necessarily be justified.
Further, with this EUR190 million order we would highlight that Alstom's announced orders for Q4 now stands at EUR 3.65 billion implying that its Q4 order intake will almost certainly exceed EUR 4 billion; with a book-to-bill above 1.0x for FY'21.
We remain buyers. Mid- to long-term the demand for sustainable transport is very positive, driven by existing trends around urbanisation, economic growth and environmental concerns. On top of that, there has been incremental stimulus for the rail industry – highlighted examples included: (i) the confirmation of the EU Recovery plan in February, of which 37% must be allocated to green investment; (ii) Canada's new CAD15bn planned federal funding for public transport; (iii) the largest ever capital budget launched for Indian Railways this year at USD 29 billion.

Nel ASA: Enters into framework agreement with Wood
(Oslo, 9 April 2021) Nel ASA (Nel, OSE:NEL) has entered into a framework agreement with the global consulting and engineering company Wood (LSE: JOHN). The companies will collaborate to develop and execute large scale, complex green renewable hydrogen projects in select regions across the world.

"We are very excited to be entering into this agreement with Wood, who has extensive experience from large, complex projects worldwide. As green hydrogen projects are growing in size and complexity, it is crucial for our success to have strong partners to strengthen our project management- and execution capabilities. This is a long-term commitment, and we look forward to working together to further strengthen our competitiveness through leveraging our experience and competence.” says Jon André Løkke, CEO of Nel ASA.

Wood is a global leader in consulting and engineering across energy and the built environment, providing consulting, projects and operations solutions in more than 60 countries, employing around 40,000 people.

“We are excited about the opportunity to support NEL Hydrogen as they play their part in the green hydrogen revolution, and as we unite on our commitment to create a more sustainable and cleaner energy future. We look forward to leveraging our global engineering and project implementation capabilities to support our client on their delivery of impactful solutions around the world,” says Craig Shanaghey, Wood’s President of Operations for Europe, Middle East and Africa.

The process of phasing in Wood on ongoing projects is underway.

** Morgan Stanley starts Norway's NEL with "overweight" rating and price target of NOK 32, saying
hydrogen's potential is promising with its improving economics and its decarbonisation capabilities
** The brokerage sees electrolyser manufacturers as strong potential beneficiaries given current bottlenecks in the industry
