Hydrogen Utopia & Linde to Enter an Agreement to Deploy Powerhouse Energy Group Dmg Plastic Waste-to-hydrogen System in Europe

FuelCellsWorksSeptember 6, 2021
Hydrogen Utopia Waste to Hydrogen
Hydrogen Utopia International PLC (HUI) is pleased to announce that Linde has finalised technical feasibility evaluation to deploy the syngas cleanup and hydrogen extraction of Powerhouse Energy DMG® technology in Poland.

Now HUI and Linde are in their final stage of signing a mutual contract for the syngas cleanup.

HUI have so far acquired exclusive rights to the Powerhouse DMG system in Poland, Hungary and Greece.

The feasibility study envisaged a plant to be jointly developed by Linde, HUI and Powerhouse Energy (PHE), located in Konin in Central Poland. The plan is to convert 40 tonnes of plastic waste into 58 MWh of renewable electricity and clean hydrogen per day. Once the plant is realised, the hydrogen will be used locally as a fuel for city buses and other heavy-duty vehicles, as well as for passenger cars. The DMG® system will also be used to provide heat to the citizens of Konin thanks to the Central Heating System.

The project, when completed, will contain ten DMG® units in one location. The site is one that Hydrogen Utopia International Ltd has received legal access to commence planning applications, necessary permits and EIA, and for this purpose, HUI has engaged SWECO to commence the process.

The project is subject to funding approval by the Just Transition Fund which will be matched by funds from the Polish Government under the JUST Transition fund terms of Government matching funds.

Hydrogen is increasingly seen as an essential component in the energy transition to clean energy away from fossil fuels. It is the best available technology for heavy-duty and long range transport, as well as for decarbonising key industries including cement and steel production and potentially domestic heating.

Polish Hydrogen Strategy 2030, which is being currently implemented, sets out six key targets and forty steps that must be taken to achieve European Union guidelines. The three sectors where hydrogen will be needed are energy, transport and industry. Poland is looking for new energy solutions in order to reduce its dependency on coal and make a swift transition towards sustainable energy.

Over the course of 2019, the city of Konin prepared a new energy transition strategy for the city, which includes both waste-to-energy initiatives as well as using hydrogen as a fuel for local transport and municipal companies. The city is currently engaged, together with other relevant regional stakeholders in preparing the territorial just transition plan for the Eastern Wielkopolska region.

This transition would not be possible without a close collaboration between HUI and Powerhouse Energy PLC – a UK based company which is a leading provider of onsite clean energy systems and long-term energy off-take services. Powerhouse Energy uses both traditional and renewable forms of fuel to generate both electric and thermal energy in an economically viable and environmentally responsible manner. Powerhouse holds the rights to the Distributed Modular Gasification (DMG®) technology.

“We are proud to have Linde , who are proven hydrogen experts, on board of this project. In the case of DMG deployment in Poland, Linde’s efficiency will speed up decarbonising my country. Thanks to our Powerhouse Energy DMG technology, we also aim to offer a valid solution to a massive plastic waste issue which we are facing at the moment in Poland,” says Aleksandra Binkowska, CEO of HUI.

“We at Linde are very happy to contribute our gas-cleaning and hydrogen technologies to this forward-looking project. Producing hydrogen from plastic waste will help to solve an environmental problem and at the same time foster decentralized hydrogen utilization,” says Harald Ranke, Managing Director at Selas-Linde.

ABOUT HYDROGEN UTOPIA

Hydrogen Utopia International (HUI) was founded in 2020 by Aleksandra Binkowska with the aim to turn Poland and the EU to net positive through using unrecyclable plastic and transforming it into low cost hydrogen and electricity. ABOUT POWERHOUSE ENERGY GROUP

Powerhouse Energy, the sustainable hydrogen company, has developed a technology that provides a solution to non-recyclable plastic and produces a clean energy that can help improve air quality by replacing diesel with hydrogen as a transport fuel.

Powerhouse technology aims to be used at a local level providing a closed loop solution within the community for non-recyclable plastic waste, cleaning up our oceans and helping to accelerate the clean energy transition to reach the target of net zero emissions by 2030.

The Distributed Modular Generation (DMG®) technology can utilise non-recyclable plastic, end-of-life-tyres, and other waste streams to efficiently and economically convert them into syngas from which valuable products such as chemical precursors, hydrogen, electricity and other industrial products may be derived.

Powerhouse’s technology is one of the world’s first proven, distributed, modular, hydrogen from waste (HfW) process.

The Powerhouse (DMG®) process can generate up to 2 tonnes of road-fuel quality hydrogen and more than 58MWh of exportable electricity per day.

Powerhouse’s process produces low levels of safe residues and requires a small operating footprint, making it suitable for deployment at enterprise and community level. As announced on 11th February 2020 under its Supplemental Agreement with Peel Environmental, Powerhouse will receive an annual license fee of GBP500,000 in respect of each project which is commissioned.

THE CLEAN ENERGY TRANSITION…. AND CLEANING UP PLASTIC
Protos

Accelerating the clean energy transition

Oct 18, 2021 | Blogs / Plastic

There was a moment where the world’s population woke up to the problem we have with plastic. The award-winning film, A Plastic Ocean, was according to Sir David Attenborough, “one of the most important films of our time”. The film explores the fragile state of our oceans and uncovers alarming truths about the consequences of our disposable lifestyle.

The film starkly outlines how plastic, a modern and convenient material, is in fact choking the planet and polluting our natural environment.

The producer of that film, Jo Ruxton, will be speaking later this year at Powerhouse Energy’s event in Glasgow, which aims to discuss the problem we have with plastic waste and Powerhouse Energy’s plastic to hydrogen technology. The event, ‘Reducing plastic in our oceans and improving the air we breathe’, will see Jo Ruxton, founder of Ocean Generation, outline how we are the first generation to deeply understand Ocean issues, and the last generation who can stop them.

The issue of plastic pollution must not be forgotten as the world’s focus turns to COP26 next month with a focus of getting Governments to agree to reduce emissions before its too late. Managing wastes such as plastics responsibly is as important as addressing climate change as the result is the same if we fail to do it -irreparable environment damage.

This was voiced by Scientists recently who warned politicians not to forget that the world is also in the midst of a plastic waste crisis. A paper from the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) and Bangor University outlined how plastic pollution and climate change are not separate but can in fact impact each other. Extreme weather such as floods and typhoons associated with a heating planet will disperse and worsen plastic pollution in the sea.

Here at Powerhouse Energy we aim to address both the problem of plastic waste and the climate crisis. Our technology is set to be commercialised first at Protos, Peel NRE, part of Peel L & P, where our technology will transform plastics and waste into clean energy. Switching to hydrogen can save up to 125% CO2 when compared to carbon emissions from diesel. Powerhouse technology also produces nearly three-quarters less carbon than waste incineration.

By recycling plastic and waste into clean energy products such as hydrogen, we can help improve air quality for communities not only in the North West of England but across the UK and beyond.

Waste Plastic to Hydrogen Company Powerhouse Energy Announces Development Partner Update
FuelCellsWorksNovember 12, 2021
Powerhouse Energy Main Hydrogen Utopia
Hydrogen Utopia International PLC (HUI) and Linde Engineering signed a framework agreement for the supply of technology and equipment to a waste-to-hydrogen system in Europe. HUI will build a waste-to-hydrogen system where plastics are converted into syngas, from which valuable products such as chemical precursors, hydrogen, electricity and other industrial products will be derived. Linde Engineering will supply the technology to clean the syngas and also extract and process hydrogen.

A HUI/Linde Engineering technical feasibility study earlier this year explored the development of a chemical recylcing plant in Konin, Central Poland. As a result, HUI will build a plant which is able to convert 40 tonnes per day of plastic waste into 58 MWh of renewable electricity and clean hydrogen. Once the plant is operational, the hydrogen will be used locally as a fuel for transportation and district heating.

In 2021, Hydrogen Utopia International PLC acquired exclusive rights to the Powerhouse DMG® chemical recycling system in Poland, Hungary and Greece and non-exclusive access in the rest of the European Economic Area. HUI is in advanced discussions with various regions and potential partners or customers about further sites in Europe.

The Konin project, when completed, will contain ten DMG® units in one location. The site is one where HUI has the necessary title and legal access to commence planning applications, necessary permits and EIA and for this purpose HUI has engaged SWECO to commence the permitting process. The project is subject to funding approval by the Just Transition Fund which will be matched by funds from the Polish Government under the JUST Transition fund terms, which stipulate Government matching funds. The ambitions and hopes of HUI for deploying the DMG® technology are high, due to the Pan- European JTF Mechanism, which is the biggest financial support ever provided by the European Union. The JTF Post- Covid Fund is estimated at 1,7 trillion EUR and will be distributed in the form of grants and soft loans in order to meet the EU’s net-zero objectives by 2030.

Hydrogen is increasingly seen as an essential component in the energy transition to clean energy away from fossil fuels. It is the best available technology for heavy-duty and long-range transport, as well as for decarbonising key industries including cement and steel production and potentially domestic heating.

The city is currently engaged, together with other relevant regional stakeholders, in preparing the territorial Just Transition plan for the Eastern Wielkopolska region.

This transition would not be possible without a close collaboration between HUI and Powerhouse Energy Group PLC, the licensor of the DMG® technology.
