De Russische troepen in Mariupol hebben dindsagmiddag de aanval geopend op de Azovstal-staalfabriek, terwijl er naar alle waarschijnlijkheid nog burgers in het complex zitten. Het Russische ministerie van Defensie heeft de aanval op het laatste Oekraïense bolwerk van verzet in de havenstad bevestigd.

Volgens het Russische ministerie maakten Oekraïense soldaten gebruik van een wapenstilstand om nieuwe posities in te nemen. De wapenstilstand was afgesproken om de burgers die zich nog in de fabriek verschuilen te evacueren.

Het is niet bekend hoeveel burgers zich nog in de staalfabriek bevinden. Eerder op dinsdag zei burgemeester Vadym Boychenko dat er nog zo'n tweehonderd burgers zich in de staalfabriek bevinden. Het is niet duidelijk of er in de tussentijd nog meer van hen met succes geëvacueerd zijn.

Verslaggevers van de BBC meldden al dat de Russen waren begonnen met het beschieten en bombarderen van de staalfabriek. Eenheden van het Russische leger en pro-Russische rebellen uit de zelfbenoemde volksrepubliek Luhansk maken gebruik van artilleriegeschut en luchtaanvallen om de posities te bestoken die door Oekraïense militairen zouden zijn ingenomen, aldus Rusland.

De afgelopen dagen werden met hulp van het Rode Kruis en de Verenigde Naties honderden burgers geëvacueerd uit de staalfabriek. Het Rode Kruis meldde dinsdag dat zeker 156 burgers die zondag werden gered inmiddels zijn aangekomen in Zaporizhzhia.

Oost-Oekraïne wordt totaal in puin geschoten, de dure goederen worden geroofd en de bevolking wordt weggevoerd of is gevlucht. Werkende bedrijven zijn er niet meer en de kolen in de grond wil niemand hebben.

Je kan je dus afvragen wat Rusland met dit gebied wil gaan doen.

Dus je maakt aan het begin van de Speciale Militaire Operatie (kuch) een account aan om dit soort klare onzin te verkondigen?
Dan zijn er 2 opties:
a) U krijgt hiervoor betaald, waarschijnlijk in waardeloze roebels, of
b) U doet dit voor de lol wat net zo waardeloos is.

Wellicht is er nog een c) maar dan adviseer ik U dringend uw medicatie weer te gaan innemen en zsm contact op te nemen met uw persoonlijk begeleider van dienst.

Dit is geen persoonlijke aanval, ik maak me zorgen om u, dus vandaar dit advies, dringend.

Die roebelkoers is irreëel, zoiets als verschillende coins die enkel in een gesloten nerd-circuit gebruikt worden. Je kan er eigenlijk weinig mee doen.

Zeer mooie speech van Boris maar het klinkt alsof de outcome van de battle al bekend is en dat is echt niet het geval.
Wordt straks alsnog de oorlog verklaard met dus een paar 100.000 extra troepen (niet gemotiveerd en getraind maar toch) of grijpt die Kremlin-mafkees straks tóch naar zwaardere middelen om zijn doel te bereiken?
Het zijn slechts mooie woorden maar niemand weet hoe dit komende dagen/weken verder zal verlopen.

Als de russen doorgaan zoals ze gingen zullen ze krijgen wat ze al kregen, laten we daar op hopen!

Ik heb toch het vermoeden dat bij de bevrijding van Nederland in 1945 veel van je familieleden enthousiast naar de binnenkomst van die dappere Amerikanen stonden te zwaaien. Zo te lezen duurde het vervolgens nog zo’ n 66 jaar voordat u het levenslicht zag.

The dead Z: Russian soldiers' bodies are laid out in the shape of their invasion insignia as Zelensky's men make 30-mile advance and expel Putin's forces from town near Kharkiv

Ukraine has pushed Putin's army back from its second-largest city in a successful counter-attack as dead bodies of Russian soldiers were found arranged in a grisly Z pattern - the symbol of its invasion - in a recaptured village.

Kyiv's men stormed east out of Kharkiv, in north-eastern Ukraine, on Monday and managed to recapture the town of Staryi Saltiv around 30 miles away, according to a Pentagon intelligence briefing.

The move relieves pressure on Kharkiv, which Putin's men were intending to capture and which has been heavily shelled, while also threatening the main Russian supply route for forces currently fighting in nearby Donbas.

Journalists who ventured out of Kharkiv behind the advancing troops described the nearby countryside as an 'open-air graveyard', with the streets and fields littered with bodies lying unclaimed.

One of the most-gruesome sights was the discovery of what appeared to be Russian corpses arranged into a 'Z' pattern. The bodies of civilians were also found inside apartments and burned-out vehicles nearby. Both likely constitute war crimes.

Meanwhile footage showed Ukrainian artillery destroying a column of Russian armoured vehicles further south, to the west of Izyum, as heavy fighting continues for control over Donbas.

The Ukrainian advance came on a day when little else changed along a frontline stretching hundreds of miles from Kharkiv in the north, to Mariupol in the south and further west towards the city of Mykolaiv.

American intelligence says Russia launched 30 missiles against targets inside Ukraine yesterday, while artillery continued to pound defensive positions in an attempt to soften them up for troops to attack.

Despite the heavy shelling, Russian gains have been 'tepid', the Pentagon said.

Moscow's forces made only minor advances around Popansa and further north in the town of Lyman, as they attempt to surround Ukrainian troops defending the cities of Severodonetsk, Lysychansk, Slovyansk and Kramatorsk.

Both sides are said to be suffering heavy casualties in the region, though Russia's losses are widely expected to be worse than Ukraine's.

Russia's slow advances are due to commanders trying to preserve troops after units were mauled in the failed effort to capture Kyiv, the US says.

Ukrainian Guerillas: Fighting Russians in Temporarily Occupied Territories

One tool Ukraine may have to rely on if it hopes to free Kherson, Zaporizhzhia and beyond is the National Resistance system, which was officially launched on January 1, of this year (Liga Zakon, January 4). The associated law was adopted by the Ukrainian parliament and signed by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on July 16, 2021, officially creating a coordinated approach to national resistance (Ukrinform, July 16, 2021).

Ukraine’s National Resistance system consists of three elements: Territorial Defense (locally based conventional defense formations—see EDM, December 1, 2021), a partisan-like Resistance Movement (RM), and military training for all people of Ukraine (Army Inform, January 2). The Resistance Movement is expected to operate in temporarily occupied territories and is coordinated by the Special Operation Forces of the Ukrainian Armed Forces (UA SOF). The RM has the following tasks: preparing citizens to resist the aggressor, disrupting enemy activities, and participating in special operations (Defense Express, August 4, 2021). Members of this movement enjoy benefits similar to UA SOF operators, like concealed identities and protection for their close family members. Also, they undergo specialized training under special forces instructors that goes far beyond the basic preparation given to army reservists (Facebook.com/usofcom, August 3, 2021).

This approach is allegedly proving its effectiveness. According to the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense, RM members have captured several Russian military vehicles and soldiers (Sprotyv.mod.gov.ua, April 5). And with the help of coordination and targeting provided by UA SOF, they notably seized a Russian Rtut-BM electronic warfare (EW) station (Sprotyv.mod.gov.ua, March 19). Local guerilla fighters have also contributed to correcting artillery strikes of the regular Armed Forces (Sprotyv.mod.gov.ua, April 17) and cooperated with the UA SOF on eliminating high-priority targets (Sprotyv.mod.gov.ua, April 13). Such support, for example, made it possible for the UA SOF to destroy a vital bridge deep inside the Russian-occupied zone, near the small eastern city of Izyum (Novynarnia, April 14).
