July 21 (Bloomberg) -- China loosened its fixed-exchange rate against the dollar for the first time in a decade, letting the yuan fluctuate versus a basket of currencies, the People's Bank of China said on its Web site.
Valuing the yuan against more than one currency will allow it to appreciate or decline as the dollar gains or drops versus other currencies. Until now, it has been pegged at about 8.3 per dollar, earning criticism from U.S. Treasury Secretary John Snow, Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan, German Finance Minister Hans Eichel and his Japanese counterpart, Sadakazu Tanigaki.
``This will be a small, but symbolic first step in a long road,'' said Marios Maratheftis, a currency strategist in London at Standard Chartered Plc, a U.K. bank that gets two-thirds of its profit from Asia. ``If there is any flexibility allowed, and until there has been none, then the yuan will strengthen against the dollar. It won't be a huge move, though.'' He spoke in an interview on June 24.

Waarom?

Omdat dit als positief voor de dollar wordt gezien, wat het uiteraard ook is. Maar de extreme reactie, duidt op een overreactie. Aex schoot door naar 399.02 , nu weer op 397.5
Dat bedoelde ik met paniek-koopgolf

Ik zie weinig gebeuren, alleen futures winnen flink.
Goud blijft liggen, olie doet ook niks.
En de dollar daalt...

De Bund was net uitgebroken uit z'n dalende trend van de afgelopen anderhalve week, en dondert er weer in door de move van de Chinezen.

13u25: China wijzigt monetaire politiek

21 juli 2005

China heeft vandaag een wijziging in de monetaire politiek aangekondigd. De koers van de yuan zal niet langer meer vastgepind worden aan de USD, maar aan een korf van munten.

Elke dag zal er een koers voor de Chinese munt vastgesteld worden. Dat betekent dat de yuan een grotere flexibiliteit krijgt. De dagelijkse koers van de yuan ten opzichte van de USD zal mogen schommelen in een band van 3 %.

De band waarin de andere munten mogen fluctueren moet nog bekendgemaakt worden. Er werd al lang druk op China uitgeoefend om de monetaire politiek te wijzigen.

SHANGHAI (Reuters) - China scrapped the yuan's peg to the U.S. dollar Thursday and tied it to a basket of currencies, the central bank said, the first steps in highly anticipated reforms aimed at letting the currency float freely.

The new yuan rate versus the dollar revalues the currency by 2.1 percent, to 8.11 per U.S. dollar as of 7 a.m. ET, the central bank said on its Web site.

Under the previous policy, the yuan was kept near 8.28 per dollar, a virtual peg that had led the United States and other countries to complain that China's currency was unfairly undervalued.

The changes came amid intense speculation that Beijing would overhaul its currency regime, which had been basically unchanged since the 1997/98 Asia crisis.

China to value yuan against basket of currencies By Steve Goldstein
LONDON (MarketWatch) -- The People's Bank of China said it'll dropping its yuan-dollar peg in favor of one vs. a basket of currencies.

The daily trading price of the dollar vs. the yuan will continue to be allowed to float within a band of 0.3%,

while the trading prices of non-U.S. dollar currencies will be allowed to move in yet-to-be announced bands. "The People's Bank of China will make adjustment of the RMB exchange rate band when necessary according to market development as well as the economic and financial situation. The RMB exchange rate will be more flexible based on market condition with reference to a basket of currencies," it said.

Wat is hier nou eigenlijk het goede nieuws? Dit betekent het einde van het inflatieloze tijdperk.

De Amerikanen consumeren veel meer dan ze produceren. Greenspan creëert geld alsof het WC papier is. En toch was er geen inflatie. How come? Omdat de Chinezen bereid waren om ons voor een habbekrats van goedkope producten te voorzien. Dat kostte ons weliswaar werkgelegenheid, maar de inflatie bleef onder controle.

Nu beginnen de Chinezen dus te zeggen dat ze niet meer voor bijna niets willen produceren. Hun munt wordt duurder, we zullen meer voor hun arbeid moeten betalen. Dat betekent voor ons inflatie, maar die beurs maar rallyen.

De "opluchting" komt misschien voort uit het feit dat de Amerikanen altijd, ten onrechte, de Chinezen de schuld hebben gegeven van hun tekorten. Niet de Chinezen zijn daar de schuld van, maar de Amerikanen zelf die veel meer consumeren dan ze produceren. De revaluatie van de Yuan gaat écht het Amerikaanse begrotings- en handelstekort niet opheffen. Het gaat wel inflatie in het Westen veroorzaken.

Rallyen maar, omhoog met die beurs. Alle nieuws is goed nieuws, ook al is het slecht.

In ieder geval op zeker er al 0,3 % inflatie erbij, maar goed dat NIEMAND last heeft van de hoge olieprijzen want er is toch immers geen inflatie!

Positief is in ieder geval dat de VS niet met handelsbelemmerende maatregelen zal komen tov China.
Positief is ook dat zeer waarschijnlijk VS exporteurs meer geld gaan verdienen aan de handel met China.

En ja als negatief punt geldt jouw argument.

BEIJING (Reuters) - China bowed to months of market and political pressure on Thursday by revaluing the yuan by 2.1 percent and abandoning the currency's decade-old peg against the dollar.

In a long-awaited move that it said would improve the running of the economy and give more play to market forces, the central bank said the yuan's value from now on would be linked to a basket of currencies of China's main trading partners.

Beijing had been under strong pressure from its trading partners, especially the United States, to abandon the yuan's peg of 8.28 per dollar, which they said undervalued the currency and handed Chinese exporters an unfair advantage on world markets.

The new rate, initially, will be 8.11 yuan per dollar, well short of the 10 percent revaluation that Washington had been seeking to head off protectionist pressure in Congress.

"It was going to happen at some point. They have introduced a very modest appreciation to kick the whole thing off," said Ian Gunner, head of foreign exchange research at Mellon Financial Corp. in London.

From now on, the yuan, also known as the renminbi (RMB), will be allowed to move in a tight range of 0.3 percent up or down from the previous day's close, the central bank said, leaving open the possibility of further incremental revaluations.

"The People's Bank of China will make adjustment of the RMB exchange rate band when necessary according to market development as well as the economic and financial situation," the central bank said in a statement in English on its web site.

"The RMB exchange rate will be more flexible based on market conditions with reference to a basket of currencies," it added.
