Olmert Agrees to a Multinational Force Along Northern Border
09:30 Jul 30, '06 / 5 Av 5766
by Yechiel Spira

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has agreed to a US plan calling for the deployment of an international peacekeeping force along Israel’s border.

Following an almost two-hour meeting in his Jerusalem residence with US Secretary of State Dr. Condoleezza Rice on Saturday night, the prime minister agreed to the US plan, calling for the deployment of a multinational force between Israel and Lebanon and Syria. It was announced that France and Lebanon would take part in the force, but other details have yet to be decided upon.

According to reports following the high-level meeting, the size of the force and the timing for such a move must still be agreed upon, but Olmert has given his approval to the idea of such a force being positioned between Israel and Hizbullah in southern Lebanon.

Secretary Rice will leave for Lebanon on Sunday, and she will return to Israel following talks with officials in Beirut as she continues her shuttle diplomacy mission in the hope of actualizing a ceasefire.

The US-brokered plan includes yet another land withdrawal by Israel, from the Har Dov area, also known as Shab’a Farm. The area today has a vital strategic significance, permitting IDF troops to man outposts along the border area.

The prime minister has indicated a willingness to consider withdrawing from Shab'a, despite Israel’s compliance with the demands of the international community in its May 2000 withdrawal from southern Lebanon, and despite the fact that the Har Dov area was liberated from Syrian occupation, not Lebanese.

UN Resolution 1559 of two years ago calls for the deployment of the Lebanese army in southern Lebanon and the disarming of Hizbullah. It is not clear if this will help achieve Israel's stated goals of distancing Hizbullah from Israel’s border and cutting off Hizbullah’s weapons supply train from Iran and Syria.

While Secretary Rice did not call upon Israel to stop the military offensive in Lebanon at this time, French President Jacques Chirac released a statement that he would not authorize the deployment of his troops until Israel ceases its fire.

Reports quoting senior Defense Ministry officials state that the Americans will permit the ongoing Israeli offensive against Hizbullah to continue for another 7-10 days, but no such official statement has been released.

France on the other hand is preparing to turn to the UN Security Council, demanding an immediate Israeli ceasefire. The French resolution was distributed to council members over the weekend, calling for a stabilization force numbering some 20,000 troops.

UN Secretary-General Kofi Anan on Monday will head a session discussing potential force members, which is expected to include European Union nations as well as Turkey.

In a weekend interview with the BBC, British Prime Minister Tony Blair expressed optimism, stating he believes an agreement on the international force and a ceasefire can be reached in a number of days.

Israel’s military offensive intended to disarm and distance the Hizbullah threat was launched following a multi-pronged Hizbullah attack on July 12 which left eight soldiers dead and two IDF soldiers falling captive to the terrorists. Since the start of the ongoing warfare, Hizbullah has fired close to 2,000 missiles into Israeli civilian population centers, striking the entire northern area. Hizbullah has continually threatened to direct longer-range rockets into the Greater Tel Aviv area. Last week, longer-range missiles landed as far south as Afula.

Secretary Rice has signaled that any ceasefire agreement must include the unconditional release of captive IDF soldiers being held by terrorists. A third IDF soldier is being held captive by Hamas in Gaza. He was taken captive in the Kerem Shalom area near Gaza in June.

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has released statements remaining firm in his demands for the immediate and unconditional release of the three as a prerequisite to an Israeli agreement to halt military offensives in Lebanon and Gaza.

Islamic Terrorist Attacks Jewish Federation in Seattle
23:03 Jul 29, '06 / 4 Av 5766
by Ezra HaLevi

Pam Waechter, 58, was shot dead and five are in serious condition after a Muslim man opened fire inside a Jewish Federation building in Seattle, Washington Friday.

The Arab man entered the building Friday afternoon at 4 PM, following behind a woman who had just punched in her security code, shooting a receptionist and demanding that she call 911 and tell them he was holding everyone hostage. “He told the police that it was a hostage situation and he wanted us to get our weapons out of Israel," an employee told the Seattle Times.

According to Jewish Federation official Amy Wasser-Simpson, the man had told staff members, "I'm a Muslim American; I'm angry at Israel," and then began shooting.

Most of the employees were able to escape through a back door and once police teams arrived, the man, 31-year-old Naveed Afzal Haq, soon surrendered. He was charged with one count of murder and five of attempted murder. He is reportedly a US citizen, from outside the Seattle region.

All five of the wounded are women as well. None of the names of the victims have been released, but three of them with abdominal injuries underwent emergency surgery Friday. One victim is pregnant and was wounded only in her arm.

Police SWAT teams and bomb squads combed the area for hours looking for additional threats.

Robert Jacobs, the local director of the Anti-Defamation League in Seattle, issued a recommendation to all Jewish institutions, including synagogues, to cancel services and evacuate the buildings until it is determined if the shooting is a lone incident. "We're trying to keep the community as calm as possible," he told the Times.

Most of the city's synagogues ignored the directive, saying it would be a surrender to terrorism.

The Jewish Federation organized a large rally last week in support for Israel's Re-Engagement War.

Seattle Police Chief Gil Kerlikowske told an evening news conference that in addition to providing an extra layer of protection to the city's synagogues, police would be guarding mosques as well, fearing retaliation for the shooting.

Also Saturday, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, in a videotaped message broadcast on the militant group's television station, said the Israeli effort to clear southern Lebanon of Hezbollah is "doomed to failure" and that Rice's return to the region is part of an American plan to impose its will on the Middle East. His videotaped message was broadcast on Hezbollah's television station.

The United States has not supported calls from a number of other countries for a cease-fire, with Rice saying it is important for Hezbollah forces to be sufficiently weakened to ensure any cease-fire is long-term.

The official -- speaking live on Al-Arabiya TV -- said the bodies of 15 dead had been pulled from the rubble but rescuers lacked the heavy equipment to remove an estimated 50 people still trapped under the collapsed building.

"We can't do anything for them under the rubble because we do not have the right equipment," the unidentified official said.

A Lebanese security official told CNN that between 20 and 40 are known dead.

Most of the dead were gathered in the basement of the building when it was hit by a missile, the official said. Women and children were among the dead, he said.

Video broadcast by Arab TV showed the limp and bloodied bodies of woman and children who appeared to be wearing night clothes. Many of these bodies were under rubble in the basement of the building.

"We want this to stop," shouted villager Mohammed Ismail as quoted by The Associated Press. "May God have mercy on the children. They came here to escape the fighting."

"They are hitting children to bring the fighters to their knees," said the black-haired man with a gray beard, his brown pants covered in dust.

IDF spokesman Jacob Dalal told CNN that Hezbollah has used the village to fire rockets into western Galilee, including the coastal town of Nahariya. Dalal said Israel was exercising its right to defend itself with the airstrike.

Qana is about 10 miles east of the southern Lebanese coastal city of Tyre.

SEATTLE, Washington (CNN) -- A man accused of killing one woman and wounding five others at a Jewish center Friday was ticketed for a minor traffic violation a half hour before the shootings, the Seattle police chief said Saturday.

The 30-year-old Haq, of Pasco, about 200 miles southeast of Seattle, is being held in King County Jail.

According to Kerlikowske, Haq was upset over three world events: U.S. involvement in Iraq; the U.S. backing of Israel; and what Haq said was the mistreatment of the Pakistani people.

Haq found the Jewish center by researching "something Jewish" on the Internet, Kerlikowske said.

The day before the shootings, Haq picked up .40-caliber and .45-caliber semiautomatic handguns from two different stores in the Seattle area after honoring the waiting period for purchasing weapons, Kerlikowske said.

Once he arrived at the Jewish center -- a heavily fortified building with bulletproof windows and security cameras -- Haq hid behind a plant outside one of the center's locked doors. When a young girl approached, he grabbed her and forced her to take him inside, Kerlikowske said.

"She could not have kept him out," the chief said. "She was a hostage at gunpoint."

After asking for the manager, Haq began shooting people inside the center about 4 p.m., Kerlikowske said. Eighteen people were inside the building at the time. One of the first victims was the pregnant woman.

According to witnesses, Haq said only that no one should call 911, Kerlikowske said.

"She crawled back to her office, and that's exactly what she did -- called 911," Kerlikowske said of the pregnant woman. "She was able to get him to take the telephone."

Once Haq began talking to emergency dispatchers, he calmed down, Kerlikowske said. He told the dispatchers: "I'm going to surrender and I'm laying down my gun," Kerlikowske said.

The 37-year-old woman confirmed to police that he put down the weapon, the chief said, calling her "a hero in my eyes."

Zo kan iedereen die de beelden ziet op tv ineens doordraaien, geweer kopen en in het wilde weg om zich heen gaan schieten.

"The American Muslim and Jewish communities must do whatever is within their power to prevent the current conflict in the Middle East from being transplanted to this country," the Washington-based civil rights and advocacy group said.

Robert Jacobs, Pacific Northwest Regional director for the Anti-Defamation League, said the league has been warning Jewish institutions to be wary and have adequate security because of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

If they cannot, he said, it would be better for Jews "not to congregate in one location that might be an obvious site."
