SIMEC Kinlochleven Hydro Electric Power Station Increases Generation

GFG Alliance’s international energy business firm SIMEC announced that its Kinlochleven hydro electric power station has increased generation to its highest level for nearly 20 years following a recent upgrade to capacity. Kinlochleven, which was acquired by SIMEC in 2016 and is located on the JAHAMA Highland Estate lands, last week generated an average of 23.27MW of clean green power – producing sufficient electricity to power a city the size of Inverness. The increase, to the highest output since 2002, follows the first phase of a significant investment programme undertaken by SIMEC to reinstate defunct side-stream intakes and improve the efficiency of water collection on the hydro scheme. The outcome represents a step-up in clean energy to help power Scottish homes and industry.

SIMEC was previously accredited to produce 19.5 MW of power under the Scottish Government’s Renewable Obligation scheme. Legislative changes to the Government’s scheme have made it economic to increase capacity above this level at Kinlochleven.

Kinlochleven was the first major hydro-electric project in Britain, built between 1905 and 1909. The scheme harnasses water power from the Black Water chain of lochs through a 13km reservoir. The Blackwater dam, which serves Kinlochleven, is the longest in the Scottish Highlands.

SIMEC also owns the nearby Lochaber hydro station, which produces power for ALVANCE British Aluminium, the only smelter remaining in the UK.

Snowy Hydro 2.0 Exapnsion Approved by NSW

New South Wales has approved a 2,000MW expansion of its 4,100MW Snowy hydropower scheme, in a move that could pressure demand for electricity from gas-fired plants. The project still requires approval from Australia's federal government. The hydropower plant, known as Snowy 2.0, is a key part of the Integrated System Plan blueprint to reduce the emissions intensity of Australia's power network as part of efforts to lower greenhouse gas emissions under the 2015 Paris climate agreement.

The Snowy 2.0 project could put pressure on gas-fired plants, which have increasingly provided firming power in eastern Australia's National Electricity Market to back up renewable energy. Around 67pc of electricity in the NEM was generated from coal-fired plants over the past 12 months, while renewables provided 25pc and the remaining 8pc came from gas.

Snowy 2.0 involves the construction of a pumped-hydropower station that will be about 800m underground and around 240m long. The project will add 350GWh of energy storage and 2,000 MW of generation capacity and play a major role in the NEM by facilitating the development of renewable energy,

A new transmission link between NSW and Victoria state is proposed to take power from Snowy 2.0 into other parts of the NEM.

RTL Nieuws 15 uur geleden

GE Renewable Energy & Walcha Energy to Accelerate 500MW Pumped Hydro Storage Project in Australia

ge-renewable-energy-walcha-energy_10589.jpg Image Source: GE Renewable Energy Walcha Energy

GE Renewable Energy and Walcha Energy have signed an agreement to jointly develop the 500MW Dungowan pumped hydro storage project in the New England Renewable Energy Zone in New South Wales in Australia. Under the agreement, GE Renewable Energy’s Hydro Solutions business will provide Walcha Energy with technical and commercial support to accelerate the development of the Dungowan pumped hydro storage power plant which plays a pivotal role in the energy transition for New South Wales and Australia.

Overall, the Walcha Energy Project has the potential to produce more than 4 GW of stable electricity from renewable sources. The Dungowan pumped hydro storage power plant is intended to anchor the broader development and ensure that the additional wind and solar resources can be reliably and safely fed into the grid. Hydropower plays a decisive role in the energy transition. Already today, 95% of all stored energy in the world is provided by hydro storage. Its storage capacity is up to 100 times higher than that of any available battery solution. Above all, however, hydropower guarantees the necessary balance and stability of the grid. With intermittent renewables, it is no longer possible to turn on or off generation nor to adjust their power output at the request of power grid operators. Hydropower is a key contributor to frequency response thanks to its flexibility in operation and ability to increase or decrease its active power. In addition, hydropower is the only renewable energy source providing inertia to the Grid.

The New England REZ is one of the largest renewable energy zones in Australia and has been designated as a strategic priority by the NSW Government. The Walcha Energy project has the potential to provide up to 15% of NSW’s power requirements. The Dungowan pumped hydro storage power plant would provide about 2% of that power, enough to supply roughly 125,000 households with electricity.

Niveau stuwmeer is in één maand tijd 10 meter gestegen
