Mitac far behind Garmin, TomTom in 3Q10 global PND market share: Canalys statistics

Daniel Shen, Taipei; Adam Hwang, DIGITIMES [Tuesday 16 November 2010]

Taiwan-based own-brand maker Mitac International's three brands Magellan, Mio and Navman had respective shares of 3.6%, 3.4% and 1.2% in the global GPS PND (portable navigation device) shipment market in the third quarter of 2010, with the aggregate of 8.2% much lower than 34.1% for Garmin and 30.9% for TomTom, Taiwan-based makers cited Canalys statistics as indicating.

There were 8.383 million GPS PNDs sold in the global market in the third quarter of 2010, a drop on year of 12.4%. The sales volume of 3.406 million units in the Europe, Africa and the Middle East market slipped 17.4% on year and the 3.21 million shipments in North America were down 11.2%, the sources indicated.

TomTom saw its market share in North America significantly increase from 20% in the third quarter of 2009 and 22% in the second quarter of 2010 to 31.2% last quarter, the sources noted.

While the GPS PND markets in North America and Europe are approaching saturation, it is difficult for international vendors to tap the large market potential in Asia Pacific because consumers' preferences and the distribution channel method vary from one country to another, while digital map databases are insufficient as well, the sources pointed out. Garmin and TomTom had a combined market share of 88% in North America and 69% in Europe, but together they occupy less than 20% of the Asia Pacific market, the sources indicated.

INTERVIEW: TomTom Set To Open Map Editing To Users -Exec
.

By Roberta B. Cowan

Of DOW JONES NEWSWIRES

AMSTERDAM (Dow Jones)--The dream of every cartographer is to have the most up-to-date maps.

For digital mapmaker TomTom, that dream could soon become a reality as it launches a new editing tool allowing users across all its platforms to share data and make corrections to its maps.

Alain de Taeye, TomTom board member and co-founder and former chief executive of digital map-maker TeleAtlas which TomTom bought for EUR2.9 billion in 2007, told Dow Jones Newswires in a recent interview that TomTom's is developing tools to help it achieve the "holy grail" of cartography whereby "if anything changes in the world, it is immediately picked up, corrected and then a new data set is sent out to all users. Because more and more devices are connected to the Internet, in the past this was just a dream, but now we know it's possible."

Right now TomTom's Map Share editing tool, which is available on 80% of TomTom personal navigation devices or PNDs, lets users correct maps on their device and share corrections with other Map Share users. Engineers are now developing a new edition that will allow TomTom's 50 million users to update maps through online editing tools across every TomTom platform such as smartphones, on the web and PNDs.

Navigation, location based applications and the surge in Internet-connected smartphones have changed the game for digital map makers, as maps now serve as an interface between customers and businesses that provide services such as location-based coupons, reservations, social networking and advertising.

But TomTom has to balance the desire for up to date information with the need for accuracy, especially as it generates significant revenue from licensing its maps directly to car manufacturers for in-dash systems.

Additions made by users will continue to be scrutinized for quality control, said de Taeye.

"Nothing goes into our database that isn't quality checked because we believe that unless you do that, and use the expertise we've developed over 25 years making maps, you can't deliver the quality needed for the automotive industry, and the automotive industry is very important to us," he said, adding that the quality checks are the key difference that sets TomTom apart from community-based rival OpenStreetMap, or OSM.

OSM, launched in 2004, is run by volunteers and provides a free online mapping database that anybody can use to make maps or run map servers. The service has proved popular with third-party application developers; this year it has 300,000 registered map makers up from just 1000 last year, and Microsoft Corp.'s (MSFT) Bing search engine and AOL Inc.'s (AOL) MapQuest have added OSM to their platforms.

"Yes, community input is extremely important but the quality checks and all of the intelligence that gets put into the maps, to make them navigable, is complex and in my opinion you can't achieve that through community input," De Taeye said.

TomTom, which competes with other commercial map makers such as Google Inc. (GOOG) and Nokia Corp.'s (NOK) Navteq, collects 2.5 trillion data points, or four times the full street maps of Europe, each day from its sat navs, which it processes to produce historic and live traffic and routing information, De Taeye said.

Right now it has 35% of the global market for mapping content to the automotive industry and a share in the high teens in Europe in the market for in-dash navigation hardware, where it has deals with Toyota Industries Corp. (6201.TO), Fiat SpA. (F.MI), Renault SA (RNO.FR), Mazda Motor Corp. (2761.TO) and most recently Subaru Co. Ltd (9778.OK).

De Taeye confirmed that TomTom is also opening its application interface, or API, to allow third party developers to create location-based applications that can be bought from a TomTom app store and downloaded to its devices. He declined to say when developers will get access to the APIs or when the store will be launched.

'Capital Markets Day'

TomTom aims for strong growth in autos business
BARCELONA, Nov 18 (Reuters) - Navigational device maker TomTom expects to strongly grow its business with vehicle companies in the coming years, while its core personal device market stabilises after shrinking this year.

Shares in TomTom have risen sharply this month on new deals with Fiat, Toyota and Subaru.

'The aim is to grow this business very substantially over the next three to five years,' Chief Executive Harold Goddijn said at an investor conference in Spain.

When asked whether the autos business could over time become bigger than traditional personal navigation device (PND) sales, Goddijn said: 'It could be.'

TomTom generated revenue of 41 million euros ($55.34 million) from the automotive sector in the third quarter, 11 percent of group revenue.

Its traditional consumer business, mostly PND sales, accounted for 78 percent of group revenues in the quarter.

Goddijn said the automotive navigation market was conservative, with many companies sticking with long-serving suppliers.

'It's a bit of the old boys club. It's difficult to break in,' he told the Morgan Stanley TMT Conference in Barcelona.

Like its main rival Garmin, TomTom is looking for new revenue streams as its PND business has come under pressure after Google and Nokia began offering free navigation on GPS-equipped smartphones.

Goddijn said the overall PND market would slightly fall this year but thanks to market share gains -- stemming from consolidation of the market -- TomTom's own sales volume would be roughly on a par with last year.

'I see stabilisation of this business also in 2011. I see stabilisation of ASPs (average selling prices),' he said.

The shrinking of the PND market has put most pressure on small players in the market, who have lost out to TomTom, Garmin and MiTac.

'We see some of that continuing going into 2011. There is a further opportunity for consolidation of market shares,' he said.

TomTom's market share would reach 50 percent in Europe for PNDs at the end of the year, while its share of the North American market would reach 27 percent, Goddijn said.

In the third quarter TomTom's European market share rose to 48 percent from 45 percent in the same period last year, but was down from 49 percent in the second quarter.

Its market share in North America increased to 25 percent from 20 percent last year and from 23 percent in the second quarter.

Goddijn said the fourth quarter had so far progressed as planned, but pointed out that the key holiday sales season to consumers was yet to start.

'So far its going in line with our expectations. No surprises there so far,' he said.

BARCELONA (Dow Jones)--Dutch navigation equipment and digital map maker TomTom N.V.'s (TOM2.AE) crucial fourth-quarter sales are in line with expectations so far, its Chief Executive Harold Goddijn said Thursday.

Speaking at the annual Morgan Stanley Technology, Media and Telecoms conference in Barcelona, Goddijn said that as in the prior year, TomTom is going big again on Black Friday, the Friday following Thanksgiving Day in the U.S., traditionally the beginning of the Christmas shopping season.

TomTom is working with retailer Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (WMT) to push US sales, Goddijn said.

Especially in the U.S., besides Europe its main market, the Christmas holiday season is crucial for TomTom. According to the Goddijn 40% of the total volume in the U.S. is done in the fourth quarter.

However, Goddijn said the Christmas holiday shopping season hasn't started yet.

For 2011, Goddijn says TomTom is well positioned, referring to growth in emerging markets.

"We do well in Central Europe and have [made] good progress in Brazil, Chile [and] Argentina. We also have a good map [plan] for India," Goddijn said.

TomTom and Tracker Management Deliver Live Driver Updates and Accurate Arrival Times for Towing Fleets
CONCORD, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--TomTom and Tracker Management Systems are partnering to help towing fleet operators improve efficiency, reduce costs and increase control of drivers and equipment. The integration of TomTom WORKsmart™ fleet management solutions and Tracker Management Systems’ dispatch software enables live driver location updates and more accurate arrival time estimates for the towing industry.

TomTom WORKsmart fleet management solutions integrate navigation, dispatch and tracking through a combination of industry-leading hardware, software and maps. Tracker Management Systems provides leading edge software, computer and wireless communication systems technology to fleet industry business owners, primarily engaged in towing and recovery.

“TomTom and Tracker Management are solving the perennial problem for towing companies of matching customers to the closest drivers and getting those trucks routed quickly to the right locations,” said Michael Geffroy, vice president, TomTom Business Solutions.

“Tracker not only provides the customer with an accurate arrival time, but we can also provide an update if anything changes while the driver is en route,” said Jim Weaver, president, Tracker Management Systems. "Tracker picks that up from the TomTom navigation data and automatically sends a recorded phone message to the customer if the driver is going to miss the promised arrival time.”

“Before we bought our TomTom/Tracker system, we had to call our drivers to find out where they were,” said Joey Ross, owner, Joey Ross Towing. “Now when a customer calls, their information is plugged into the Tracker system, which shows us where the closest driver is. Tracker then sends the location to that driver’s TomTom device, so it can navigate him right to the customer. TomTom and Tracker have improved our response times and cut our fuel costs by 15%.”
