AMSTERDAM - Het valt nog wel mee met het fileleed rond Amsterdam. In de internationale ranglijst van filesteden komt de hoofdstad pas in zicht op de vijftiende plaats, nog achter Rotterdam, dat twaalfde staat.

Brussel is de meest verstopte stad, volgens navigatiebedrijf TomTom. De vertragingen zorgen voor bijna 38 procent extra reistijd.De Poolse steden Warschau en Wroclaw zijn na Brussel de ergste filesteden in Europa.

TomTom maakt dit op uit de reisgegevens die tomtommetjes naar het concern verzenden zodra zij via de computer nieuwe routesoftware downloaden.

Een tegenslag is er voor Londen. De daar ingevoerde filetoeslag, die rijden in de spits bijna onbetaalbaar maakt, heeft niet verhinderd dat de Britse hoofdstad vierde is in de Europese fileranglijst. Ook de Britse steden Edinburgh en Belfast staan in de top tien.

In Frankrijk bestaat bijna geen stedelijk fileleed, behalve in Marseille en Parijs, die dan ook nog net in de top tien staan.

Files mogen een bekend verschijnsel zijn op de Duitse Autobahn, in de steden is het vlotjes rijden. Pas op plaats 28 komt München binnen in de ranglijst. Dan volgt er wel meteen een lawine aan Duitse filesteden, die alle nog de top vijftig halen: Essen, Hamburg, Stuttgart, Keulen, Düsseldorf, Berlijn, Frankfurt, Hannover en Bremen.

Madrid en Stockholm worden het minst geplaagd door files. In Stockholm komt dit wellicht door de daar ingevoerde spitsheffing.

TomTom baseert zijn ranglijst op de reisgegevens die 40 miljoen automobilisten uit de hele wereld anoniem doorgeven via hun computer. De databank van het concern bevat inmiddels 1,8 biljoen snelheidsmetingen.

Het systeem beschouwt verkeer dat zeventig procent of minder dan de toegestane snelheid rijdt als file, ofwel een vertraging van twintig minuten op een uur reistijd. Alleen steden met een half inwoners mensen tellen mee. (HET PAROOL)

LONDON, April 22, 2010 /PRNewswire/ — Based on its recent analysis of the automotive navigation market, Frost &
Sullivan recognises TomTom N.V. (TomTom) with the "2010 European Automotive
Navigation Company of The Year Award." Despite tough market conditions,
TomTom has managed to perform consistently and is the market leader within
Europe for portable navigation devices (PNDs). The company enjoys a
significant 45 per cent market share and has retained its 24 per cent share
in the North American market. The strong brand value associated with its
quality products is the reason for this success. Despite the recession, the
company has been profitable and continues to expand its geographic footprint
while improving its position in the market.

While PNDs dominate the navigation market, the declining hardware prices
and fierce competition among PND manufacturers have resulted in shrinking
margins since 2007. However, TomTom has been able to find new revenue streams
by constantly improving its PNDs. In Oct 2009, TomTom introduced an entry
level PND priced at 129 euro. The company released connected PNDs, which
allow dynamic information transfer for up-to-date traffic information among
other features. These services are collectively called TomTom Live Services.
At the end of 2009, 25 per cent of connected PND customers had extended their
service contracts after the trial period.

"It is essential to constantly develop innovative products and solutions
to address the changing market as well as customer needs in such a dynamic
market," says Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Vishnu Muralidharan. "TomTom
formulated a growth strategy to penetrate the automotive embedded market that
remained expensive, complicated, limited to luxury cars and featured content
and maps that were outdated before the car ever left the dealer."

In 2009, TomTom, along with its partner Renault, delivered the in-dash
navigation Carminat TomTom solution – a breakthrough OEM navigation device
that is easy to use, looks great built into the dashboard, and meets all the
automotive qualities and safety requirements. This foray enables TomTom to
compete with factory-fit navigation systems suppliers, thereby elevating its
position from being an accessory at dealerships to being able to leverage its
navigation and supply chain expertise.

The company announced an update to Carminat TomTom solution in Sep. 2009.
This is a significant move because it addresses rapid obsolescence, the most
important concern within the automotive industry. TomTom's solution provides
an easy way to upgrade features with the same set of hardware in the car.

The company has also achieved US$124 million in cost savings target by
optimising its marketing and supply-chain efforts.

Further, TomTom has developed a dynamic location referencing technology
as an open standard for the navigation, mapping and intelligent transport
industry (ITS), called OpenLR(TM). OpenLR(TM) has been designed for traffic
information systems and dynamic route guidance, and is available as an
open-source technology. It easily gets adapted to the requirements of system
integrators, and the technical community can contribute with their ideas to
improve it. Having the map database in-house is a huge advantage for TomTom
that provides the company with opportunities to address personal and
automotive markets and withstand price pressure from the market.

TomTom, already present in the mobile market, decided to launch specific
navigation applications for various operating systems and target the growing
iPhone market. The company sold 180,000 apps, from August – December 2009, of
its 100 euro navigation application in the first six months of its release in
2009.

"Competitors have also announced similar strategies and are targeting
various segments such as automotive embedded navigation, mobile phone
navigation and continuous improvement of PNDs," notes Muralidharan. "The
difference lies in the level of effort undertaken by TomTom to ensure that
all the three categories have the best products by translating its highly
successful PND knowledge base into the automotive and mobile markets."

TomTom also took an auxiliary approached to the automotive navigation
market by introducing a new portable embedded navigation, one that was fixed
in the car and could be used as a PND at the same time. This solution is
available for Toyota cars and in 2009, a second-generation product was
announced. The company also implemented an integrated infotainment system
with a portable navigation device co-developed with Fiat Group Automobiles in
2009, called the Blue&Me TomTom. Overall, TomTom is expanding its footprint
across various sectors, using its experience in the PND market to deliver the
products that the customers want, through various channels.

EU-landen zien tekorten verdrievoudigen 11:27 22-4-2010

LUXEMBURG (AFN) - De lidstaten van de Europese Unie hebben hun overheidstekorten vorig jaar gemiddeld zien verdrievoudigen. Dat maakte het Europees statistiekbureau Eurostat donderdag bekend.

De Europese overheden kwamen gemiddeld 6,8 procent van het bruto binnenlands product (bbp) tekort. In 2008 bleef het verschil tussen de inkomsten en de uitgaven nog beperkt tot gemiddeld 2,3 procent van het bbp, de som van alle goederen en diensten die in een land worden geproduceerd.

Ierland kende met 14,3 procent relatief het hoogste overheidstekort van de EU, gevolgd door Griekenland. Daar liep het gat op de begroting op tot 13,6 procent van het bbp. Ook in Groot-Brittannië (11,5 procent) en Spanje (11,2 procent) steeg het tekort tot meer dan 10 procent van het bbp. In Portugal kwam het tekort uit op 9,4 procent.

Google Introduces Turn-by-Turn Nav in the UK

Google today announced the release of their free navigation software with maps of the United Kingdom and Ireland for Android phones. This product was awaited for a few months since the start of Google Maps Navigation in the United States.

According to reliable sources Google is using Tele Atlas map data and not their own maps (at least not yet) or data from AND.

Kanker door mobiele telefoon'

AMSTERDAM - Mogelijk is er een verband tussen langdurig gebruik van mobiele telefoons en sommige vormen van kanker. Dit zou blijken uit een later dit jaar te publiceren onderzoek.

Zo zouden mensen die langer dan tien jaar veel met hun mobieltje bellen een grotere kans hebben op het krijgen van een hersentumor. Volgens de Britse krant Daily Telegraph is voor het langdurige onderzoek, onder toeziend oog van de Wereldgezondheidsorganisatie WHO, 30 miljoen euro neergelegd.

Nokia’s mapping subsidiary NAVTEQ reported €189 million in revenue in the first quarter, up 43 percent against the same quarter the previous year. Non-IFRS operating margins were 21.7%.

NAVTEQ benefited from “growth in mobile device sales, particularly Nokia mobile devices [i.e. 10 million downloads of Ovi Maps in the quarter], and improved conditions in the automotive industry,” said Nokia. Obviously, in the case of Ovi Maps these are intra-company sales that do not change Nokia’s bottom line.

AMSTERDAM (Dow Jones)--TomTom zal het nettoverlies in het eerste kwartaal van dit jaar hebben verkleind tot EUR0,4 miljoen vergeleken met een nettoverlies van EUR37 miljoen een jaar eerder, ondanks een verdere daling van de gemiddelde verkoopprijs, maar dankzij een omzetstijging van 27%, waarbij de omzet in het eerste kwartaal van 2009 werd gedrukt door de afbouw van voorraden bij klanten. Analisten geraadpleegd door Dow Jones Nieuwsdienst verwachten dat TomTom zijn prognose voor vlakke navigatiesystemen (PND)-verkopen in 2010 ten op zichte van 2009 zal herhalen. De focus ligt bij de vraag naar PND's, mede met het oog op de concurrentie van mobiele telefonieaanbieders, alsmede nieuws over nieuwe overeenkomsten met autoproducten. Om 07.00 uur maandag opent TomTom de boeken over het eerste kwartaal. Vrijdag omstreeks 10.00 uur noteert het aandeel 0,8% lager op EUR5,96, terwijl de AEX met 0,3% stijgt. (HJL)

ze schuiven dus gewoon intern met grote geldhoeveelheden om richting de aandeelhouders de aankoop van Navteq en de huidige strategie te verantwoorden.
Zullen de aandeelhouders hierin trappen? het is toch duidelijk dat ondanks al dit hosanna gebrul dat Nokia slechter en slechter draait?
