WTHI reported that Vigo County Council, after a unanimous vote, has approved Steel Dynamics Inc’s request of 10 year tax abatement for USD 231 million dollar expansions of its Steel Dynamics Heartland LLC facility in Terre Haute in the Vigo County Industrial Park. The plan is to bring 84 well-paying jobs with annual salaries above USD 80,000. The hope is to fill a majority of these jobs by Vigo County residents. There will also be several dozen construction jobs available in the coming months. Vigo County Council President Mr Aaron Loudermilk said "Obviously, when are local people get to work it is a good thing. They live here. They spend the money here and the money goes back into the community. I always feel better about a project when the work is staying here locally.”

The company hopes to break ground as soon as possible. The goal is to finish construction by the end of 2022 or the beginning of 2023.

Steel Dynamics purchased Companhia Siderurgica Nacional LLC’s plant in the Vigo County Industrial Park in late June of 2018, giving it the ability to expand its annual flat roll steel shipping capacity. Steel Dynamics Inc planned expansion includes constructing a 390,000 square-foot expansion of its cold roll steel plant at a cost of USD 34.65 million and installing USD 196.35 million in new equipment. Villacero Says Merger Deal with AHMSA is Valid
By Strategic Research Institute on Sep 16, 2021 09:14 am

Leading Mexican steel service centre and distributor Grupo Villacero considers that a merge agreement with Altos Hornos de Mexico is still valid even despite AHMSA reporting the opposite in August end. It indicated that a purchase-sale contract signed on 14 April 2021 for the shares of the Ancira Elizondo family for control AHMSA is still in force and with enforceable obligations between the parties. The company says that it did not enter into any other agreement with AHMSA and reiterates that it fulfilled and will fulfil the commitment agreed with the Ancira Elizondo family as agreed on April 14 of this year

Mexican integrated steelmaker Altos Hornos de Mexico said last month that it has revoked a sale agreement it had with a group of investors led by Villacero Group due to Alianza's incompliance of contract clauses

As per earlier agreement, Alianza Minerometalurgica Internacional, a group of investors led by Villacero, was to buy 55 percent stake at Grupo Acerero del Norte, the holding company that controls Mexican steelmaker Altos Hornos de Mexico.

AHMSA has capacity to produce nearly 5.6 million tonnes of slabs and 3.8 million tonnes of HRC and plates.

TMK Robotizes Processing of Financial Documents at SinTZ
By Strategic Research Institute on Sep 16, 2021 09:17 am

Russian Pipe Metallurgical Company TMK and the Russian consulting company providing services in business process optimization and automation NFP have implemented a pilot project to automate the work with financial documents. A software robot RPA, Robotic Process Automation, made it possible to speed up the processing of financial documents by TMK’s Sinarsky Pipe Plant by 10 times. The robot, specially developed by NFP to automate accounting and treasury processes, took over the technical operation of reconciling acts with counterparties, which was previously performed by the company's employees. In the process of setting up the robot, a number of scenarios were developed: for working with e-mail and attached files of reconciliation acts, for recognizing documents in PDF and Microsoft Excel formats, as well as for generating the corresponding acts from SinTZ in the resource planning system (ERP) and reconciling calculations. The solution is capable of verifying acts in five scenarios, depending on the type of document.

The implementation of the robot financier confirmed the effectiveness of this technology, the automated reconciliation of acts takes about 3 minutes, while it takes up to 30 minutes of working time for a specialist.

SinTZ's financial documentation is processed at the TMK-Sinara unified Business Services Center CBU in Yekaterinburg, where the administrative services of TMK and Sinara Group are concentrated. At the moment, specialists from CBU TMK-Sinara are monitoring the robot's results of the reconciliation performed by the robot, but in the future, this control is planned to be eliminated.

Before starting the implementation, the NFP team took part in organizing the infrastructure for the RPA, providing support to TMK's IT Directorate. As part of this task, the requirements for the servers were described, on which were subsequently deployed for a comprehensive solution based on a multicomponent platform for robotic automation. The created infrastructure has become common for the TMK group and is able to form the basis for the forthcoming robotization of other enterprises of the holding.

Steel Dynamics Increases Earnings Guidance for Q3 of 2021
By Strategic Research Institute on Sep 16, 2021 09:19 am

US steel maker Steel Dynamics Inc has provided third quarter 2021 earnings guidance in the range of USD 4.78 to USD 4.82 per diluted share, representing record quarterly performance. Comparatively, the company's sequential second quarter 2021 earnings were USD 3.32 per diluted share and USD 0.47 in third quarter of 2020. SDI said “Third quarter 2021 profitability from the company's steel operations is expected to be meaningfully higher than second quarter results setting a new quarterly record, driven by strong steel demand and significant metal spread expansion across the entire platform, and most pronounced within the flat roll steel operations. Third quarter 2021 steel shipments are expected to be strong across the company's steel portfolio. Domestic steel demand remains strong, with the automotive, construction, and industrial sectors continuing to lead the momentum. Order entry continues to be robust as strong demand, coupled with continuing low flat roll steel inventories underpin elevated steel selling values. The company believes this momentum will continue, resulting in even stronger fourth quarter results.”

Third quarter earnings from the company's metals recycling operations are expected to be aligned with sequential second quarter results, based on higher sequential ferrous metal margin offsetting lower volume. As many domestic steel mills are taking maintenance outages in the fourth quarter of 2021, the company anticipates ferrous scrap demand to moderate in line with reduced steel production.

Third quarter 2021 earnings from the company's steel fabrication operations are expected to be more than two and one-half times higher than sequential strong second quarter results, as higher prices and expected record quarterly shipments more than offset higher steel input costs. The non-residential construction sector remains strong as evidenced by robust and increasing order activity, resulting in another record order backlog and record forward-pricing for the company's steel fabrication platform. The company anticipates this momentum to continue through the remainder of this year and into 2022 based on these dynamics.

By Strategic Research Institute on Sep 16, 2021 09:37 am

Czech Republic based steel maker Trinecké železárny announced that the repair and reconstruction of blast furnaces 6 is currently underway and after 62 days on 19 October, the blast furnace operators will blow it up again and start melting iron. It is the largest investment of this year. The total cost of reconstruction and repairs will amount to CZK 650 million. The primary objective of the refurbishment is to install new elements and process equipment in line with current trends. The essential point of the project is the renovation of the blast furnace with new carbon blocks and the installation of new refractory linings, which will make hot metal production more efficient and reduce the environmental burden.

After the installation of modern hot blast stoves together with the installation of new air preheating assemblies, the consumption of blast furnace gas for heating the stoves will be reduced and the production of blast furnace gas itself will be reduced. This will result in a reduction in CO2 emissions.

EUROFER Seeks State Support for Decarbonisation of Steel Industry
By Strategic Research Institute on Sep 16, 2021 09:43 am

European Steel Association EUROFER said that EU steel industry, which has the ambition of reducing its emissions by 55% by 2030 compared to 1990, will be successful only if the Fit for 55 Package puts the right conditions and incentives in place. EUROFER Director General Mr Axel Eggert said “This is a make-or-break moment for Europe’s leadership, we must get it right in order to make the green transition economically and socially viable for everybody, including the steel sector. The pandemic has shown that strategic autonomy is paramount in all industries: only with a steel sector in good health, can the EU pursue its geopolitical, climate, economic and social goals. Steel has been at the heart of the European community since its very foundations in 1950 with the Schuman Declaration. Today, decarbonisation is both a reality and a necessity. We should not put European steel at risk by mistake or as an unintended collateral damage of other policies, as this could put the State of Union itself at risk in the coming years. Instead, the EU should embrace the opportunity of a steel industry that could be the global decarbonisation leader. We therefore reiterate our call on President von der Leyen to meet the CEOs of the EU steel industry for a ‘European Green Deal on Steel.”

The European steel industry calls on the EU legislators to ensure full support in the climate transition by providing:

? Access to affordable low carbon energy, especially electricity and hydrogen;

? Investment support for breakthrough, clean technologies;

? Affective carbon leakage protection -The new Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism should be applied until 2030 with the EU ETS currently used benchmark-based free allocation and indirect cost compensations throughout the EU, in order to support companies focussing on low carbon investment and also in order to assess the CBAM effectiveness over time.

EUROFER said “The implementation process of the Fit for 55 package on the ground will be equally important: overly burdensome regulations further worsening the regulatory cost disadvantage of EU companies vis-à-vis its global competitors could jeopardise manufacturing in Europe with preventable plant closures and job losses in the thousands in the steel industry alone. Higher climate ambition and rising carbon prices, which doubled in the last year and tripled in the last two years, require strengthened carbon leakage protection as long as international competition doesn’t face comparable carbon constraints, if any at all.”

Tata Steel Opts for Hydrogen Route at IJmuiden Steelworks
By Strategic Research Institute on Sep 16, 2021 09:46 am

Leading international steelmaker Tata Steel has announced plans to pursue a fully sustainable future for its steelworks in Ijmuiden in the Netherlands, by adopting a hydrogen route. Tata Steel has announced it will pursue the hydrogen route in IJmuiden and undertake a detailed assessment in this regard. This involves the introduction of direct reduced iron technology which can make iron using natural gas or hydrogen, before it is converted to steel in one or more electric furnaces to be invested in the future.

The company has already stated its ambition in IJmuiden to reduce CO2 emissions by five million tonnes a year by 2030 and has been exploring various technological options to achieve this, including the capture and storage of CO2 or a hydrogen route. External experts assessed that both options are technically feasible according to a joint study by Tata Steel and FNV, the Dutch trade union.

Tata Steel will use the coming period for discussions with all stakeholders involved in order to further develop this route. The ongoing feasibility study will also be used to further develop the DRI technology. This concerns elements such as: economic evaluation, employment, and the consequences of impact on other emissions, such as NOx, odour, dust and noise.

Trending Now: Thyssenkrupp sells Italian stainless plant AST to Arvedi
Kallanish Steel | Sept. 16, 2021

Thyssenkrupp (tk) has agreed to sell its Italian stainless steel mill, Acciai Speciali Terni (AST), to Italy’s Arvedi. The deal includes the associated sales organisation in Germany, Italy and Turkey.

AST currently employs around 2,700 people and generated sales of around €1.7 billion ($2 billion) in fiscal year 2019/2020.

The parties have agreed not to disclose the purchase price, and the closing of the transaction is expected in the first half of 2022, Kallanish learns from thyssenkrupp. The German company notes it is examining a possible minority shareholding in AST.

“We are pleased to have found a new owner for AST in the Arvedi Group, which will drive the development of the company with investments and innovations,” says thyssenkrupp’s Volkmar Dinstuhl, the current chairman of AST.

“This transaction is strategic for the whole Italian economy and represents an initial step towards new exciting developments,” says founder and president of Arvedi, Cavaliere Giovanni Arvedi. He adds that “we are very pleased that tk is considering a potential minority shareholding in AST”, which he says is proof of tk’s trust in the company.

For thyssenkrupp, the sale means the end of a process lasting many years, after it decided to part with its tradition of making stainless steel, and divested most activities to Outokumpu.

Earlier this summer, four companies were reported shortlisted for acquiring AST. Apart from Arvedi, these were Marcegaglia, Posco and Baosteel, according to union sources.

Nucor Expects Record Quarterly Earnings in Q3 of 2021

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
17 Sep, 2021, 5:18 am

US steel maker Nucor Corporation has announced guidance for its third quarter ending October 2, 2021. Nucor expects third quarter earnings to be in the range of USD 7.30 to USD 7.40 per diluted share. Third quarter of 2021 earnings are expected to be the highest quarterly earnings in Nucor history, surpassing the previous record of USD 5.04 per diluted share set in the second quarter of 2021. All three operating segments continue to generate robust profitability as overall demand remains strong across most end-use markets. Earnings of the steel mills segment are expected to increase significantly in the third quarter of 2021 as compared to the second quarter of 2021, mainly driven by higher realized selling prices. We also expect the steel products segment to generate significantly increased earnings in the third quarter of 2021 due to margin expansion caused by higher average selling prices. The raw materials segment's earnings in the third quarter of 2021 are expected to be comparable to the second quarter of 2021, excluding an impairment charge recorded in the second quarter of 2021.

Nucor said “Our internal business units' forecasts suggest that our fourth quarter of 2021 results are likely to continue the trend of exceptional performance we have seen so far this year.”

TMK Pilots SAP Based Production & Sales Planning System

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
17 Sep, 2021, 5:20 am

Russian steel maker TMK has begun pilot operation of a production and sales planning system with a planning horizon of up to 18 months. Based on the SAP Integrated Business Planning solution, the project will streamline TMK’s key business areas to replace annual planning of sales and operations by rolling planning with monthly detailing. Units responsible for market analysis, sales, purchasing, production, logistics, and other value chain processes have access to the system. Each of them enters and regularly updates respective ongoing performance data, medium-term plans, requests, and analytical information in the database. The system analyses this data and uses a special algorithm to suggest improvements to planning to enhance engagements between units to the maximum. The system’s algorithm adapts to the strategic and tactical goals and objectives set by the Company’s management.

TMK has set up a dedicated unit to take maximum advantage of the solution. It will coordinate the work of employees in SAP IBP and use built-in tools to prepare monthly forecasts of the Company’s performance drawing on the accumulated data and relevant economic and production data.

The project implemented by SAP Services CIS experts was unique for the CIS metals industry in terms of its scope and the complexity of its supply chain. Integration of the solution with other SAP products (SAP Business Warehouse) will increase planning accuracy and provide tools for operational variance analysis in making management decisions.

The project was the first, high-level milestone in building an end-to-end Integrated Planning System at TMK. New modules will be added going forward, which will enable building a single order pipeline and corporate production program, allocate production orders across plants and shops, and schedule daily tasks.
