'Visa, Mastercard en PayPal steunen Facebooks nieuwe cryptomunt'

Facebook heeft overeenkomsten getekend met onder meer Visa, Mastercard, PayPal, Uber en Booking.com voor de cryptomunt 'Libra', die het bedrijf volgende week lanceert. Dat meldt The Wall Street Journal.

Dertien financiële spelers, techgiganten en e-commercebedrijven investeren samen zo'n tien miljoen dollar (8,8, miljoen euro) in het consortium dat over de cryptomunt zal gaan, melden bronnen aan de Amerikaanse krant. Het geld zal gebruikt worden om de munt te ontwikkelen.

Het is een opmerkelijke investering, aangezien de betaalbedrijven directe concurrenten zijn van een digitaal betalingssysteem dat via Facebook loopt. De munt zal waarschijnlijk in 2020 beschikbaar komen voor de bijna 2,4 miljard mensen die actief zijn op Facebook, Messenger en WhatsApp. Hoe de munt precies gaat werken, is nog niet bekend.

Ripple Announces Strategic Partnership with Money Transfer Giant, MoneyGram

Ripple has agreed to enter into a strategic partnership with MoneyGram (NASDAQ: MGI), one of the world’s largest money transfer companies. Through this partnership, which will have an initial term of two years, Ripple would become MoneyGram’s key partner for cross-border payment and foreign exchange settlement using digital assets. In conjunction with the partnership, Ripple has agreed to provide a capital commitment to MoneyGram, which enables the company to draw up to $50 million in exchange for equity over a two-year period.

The partnership with Ripple will focus on the xRapid product, a solution for on-demand liquidity, which reduces reliance on pre-funding by enabling money to be sent from one currency and instantly settled in the destination currency. It leverages XRP, the native digital asset of the XRP Ledger, as a real-time bridge between the sending and receiving currencies. XRP remains the most efficient digital asset for settlement with transaction fees at just fractions of a penny, compared to other digital asset fees of about $30 per transaction. Similarly, the average transaction time for XRP is two to three seconds with other top digital assets ranging from 15 minutes to an hour.

Ripple Takes $50 Million Stake in MoneyGram in Push to Deploy XRP
Cryptocurrency company Ripple on Monday announced a major partnership with MoneyGram, which will see the money transfer service use the digital currency XRP as part of its day-to-day operations.

Under the terms of the deal, Ripple will pay $4.10 cents a share to acquire an 8% to 10% stake in MoneyGram. This translates into a $30 million investment, and also gives MoneyGram the option for another $20 million cash infusion in the next two years.

For San Francisco-based Ripple, the deal will provide an unprecedented opportunity to make the case that its product called X-Rapid, which allows for the transfer of XRP, is superior for moving money across borders. Ripple has long argued that banks should use XRP as a form of bridge currency, rather than leaving money tied up as collateral in foreign accounts.
