Mnuchin (Minister van Financier) battles Fox News host on virus failures: ‘Nobody expected this to take off at the rate it did’

Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin insisted on Sunday that “nobody” predicted that the new coronavirus pandemic would quickly spread to the United States even though intelligence officials reportedly tried to get the Trump administration to pay attention to the crisis.

During an interview on Fox News Sunday, guest host John Roberts questioned Mnuchin about a recent Washington Post investigation which found that the administration ignored the intelligence officials on the spread of COVID-19.

“The intelligence community was giving the White House warnings back in January that the situation coming out of China was very, very serious and would likely end up in a pandemic,” Roberts explained. “Were you ever warned that something like this was coming down pipe because the initial White House reaction appeared to be, ‘Oh, don’t worry. It’s over there in China.’ I was told, why do we need to respond robustly because there’s only 16 cases here.”

“Were you ever warned early on by the intelligence community that this was coming?” the Fox News host asked.

“You know, I want to be careful talking about specific intelligence,” Mnuchin replied. “But let me be clear — and this is not just in the U.S., this is around the world. Nobody expected this to take off at the rate it did.”

“The situation has changed very quickly and the president has responded to that,” he added.

The Treasury secretary, however, declined to say if the Trump administration ignored intelligence officials on the COVID-19 outbreak.

Het was een kwestie van tijd voordat mensen in het Congres het coronavirus begonnen op te lopen. We hebben verschillende leden van het Huis en de Senaat zelf in quarantaine zien gaan, maar tot voor kort hebben ze allemaal negatief getest. In het weekend testte het Republikeinse congreslid Ben McAdams positief. Republikeinse senator Rand Paul zegt nu dat hij ook positief is getest op coronavirus:

We zouden dit virus niemand willen toewensen, dus we hopen dat hij symptoomvrij blijft en volledig herstelt. Dit roept natuurlijk verdere bezorgdheid op over de vraag of leden van het Congres dit virus aan elkaar kunnen doorgeven. Blijf veilig iedereen.

Idd, wanneer de VS niet beter uit de Covid-19 komt dan China, terwijl ze zelfs met de paar weken vertraging in China veel meer tijd hadden om maatregelen te nemen, dan is het einde oefening voor Trump. Allerlei bedrijven verplaatsten vele producties en fabrieken naar China, wat jaren terug.
Dat was deels ook omdat China wat chanteerde en de mangel gebruikte om dit te bewerkstelligen, ook.
Wat Trump duidelijk wel goed zag vanaf begin, is dat afhankelijkheid van China nadelig is en zeker nu niet zo goed uitpakt met dit Corana-virus.
Nu , en vanaf begin Corona, echter zaak om duidelijk snel op te treden.
Daar is wat laksheid ,misschien arrogantie , onderschatting en waarschijnlijk simpelweg domheid en niet begrijpen vanaf het begin toegepast.
Gaat wat meer zieken opleveren, nu.
In Nederland en de EU is het niet anders, trouwens.

Trump tweeted at 10 minutes to midnight: "WE CANNOT LET THE CURE BE WORSE THAN THE PROBLEM ITSELF. AT THE END OF THE 15 DAY PERIOD [which began a week ago, March 16], WE WILL MAKE A DECISION AS TO WHICH WAY WE WANT TO GO!"
Vice President Pence, who heads the White House's Coronavirus Task Force, had signaled the change in tone earlier when he said the CDC will issue guidance today allowing people exposed to the coronavirus to return to work sooner by wearing a mask for a certain length of time.

Between the lines: Senior Trump officials, including the president himself, have only limited patience for keeping the economy shut down. They are watching stocks tumble and unemployment skyrocket.

What’s next: At the end of the 15-day period, there will likely be a serious clash between the public health experts — who will almost certainly favor a longer period of nationwide social distancing and quarantining — versus the president and his economic and political aides, who are anxious to restart the economy.
