Good morning from Washington where the perimeter around the White House has been expanded - guarded by what we believe are federal prison riot control officers

“I looked at it. It was during the day, it was not a problem. I read about it. We never had a problem. No one ever came close to giving us a problem. The secret service does an unbelievable job of maintaining control of the White House. And beyond the secret service, we have a lot of other great people out there including the DC Police. And then, of course, on top of that, after I saw the one evening which was a little rough. And it was certainly rough on Leland (Vittert, a Fox News reporter), I think more so than anyone else, we brought in the troops.”

Former President Barack Obama plans to address in a virtual town hall tonight the death of George Floyd, stressing the importance of “ensuring that this moment becomes one for real change, and that we can turn protest into policy,” according to an Obama aide.

Those comments will mark Obama’s first time addressing Floyd’s death on camera (via Zoom). In recent days, he has addressed the topic on social media as well as a lengthy Medium post, where he condemned police brutality and called for political solutions to address protesters' grievances about criminal justice.

Following opening remarks at the event tonight, Obama will participate in a panel discussion, which the aide said is expected to center on policing reform and other issues related to law enforcement.

The town hall tonight is at 5 p.m. ET and is hosted by My Brother’s Keeper Alliance, a program of the Obama Foundation.

An earlier statement for the event also said this: “The killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and the loss of far too many Black lives to list, have left our nation anguished and outraged. While now is a time for grief and anger, it is also a time for resolve.”

Sean Hannity and his wife to divorce after over 20 years of marriage

twitter.com/CheriJacobus/status/12682...

According to a report from Page Six, Fox News host Sean Hannity and his wife are divorcing after more than 20 years of marriage.

“Hannity, 58, and former journalist Rhodes, 57, were married in 1993 and have two children, a son, Patrick, and a daughter, Merri Kelly,” Page Six reports. “Friends of the former couple say they have been legally divorced for more than a year and separated many years prior to that, but kept it under wraps.”

Back outside the White House. Today the perimeter has been pushed back another half block. Federal law enforcement of some kind, but they won’t identify themselves, and all insignias and name plates have been removed.

The removal of names is the removal of accountability. Speaks to bad intentions- the authoritarian idea that repression won’t have consequences because has become official policy.

GOP leader backs Esper on opposing Insurrection Act

Esper said at a news conference earlier Wednesday that regular active-duty troops should not be used for domestic policing jobs.

"I've always believed and continue to believe that the National Guard is best suited for performing domestic support to civil authorities in these situations in support of local law enforcement," he said.

Media outlets reported earlier in the week that Trump was considering invoking the 213-year-old law to restore peace in cities wracked by social unrest, including riots and looting, over the police killing of George Floyd last week in Minneapolis.

The president announced Monday that he would mobilize “all available federal resources, civilian and military, to stop the rioting and looting, to end the destruction and arson and to protect the rights of law-abiding Americans, including your Second Amendment rights.”

Esper on Wednesday pushed back on Trump’s consideration of the move, arguing that it should only be used as a “last resort.”

“As a former soldier and a former member of the National Guard, the option to use active-duty forces in a law enforcement role should only be used as a matter of last resort and only in the most urgent and dire of situations," he added. "We are not in one of those situations now. I do not support invoking the Insurrection Act."

Hij krijgt nu steun van de GOP leader :Senate Majority Whip John Thune (R-S.D.)

Senate Majority Whip John Thune (R-S.D.) on Wednesday threw his support behind Defense Secretary Mark Esper after the Pentagon chief said he opposes invoking the Insurrection Act of 1807 to deploy active U.S. military on American soil to quell protests.

“I think that these tasks ought to be relegated as much as possible to the state and local authorities, the law enforcement and police,” Thune told reporters Wednesday when asked about Esper’s opposition to President Trump possibly invoking the Insurrection Act.

“You got national guard in the states they can activate. I know there are instances in the past where they’ve had to call up active-duty personnel but I think the goal always is to de-escalate, not escalate. So my view is that’s the right call,” he added.

Thune said the U.S. military should maintain its longstanding tradition of staying nonpolitical.

“I think the Defense Department by and large ought to stay out of the political fray. They’ve got a job to do and we count on them heavily to do it,” he said.

1/7 Trump's speech actually opened quite well. He acknowledges the need for justice, called Floyd's death brutal. Things go off the rails after the phrase 'but we cannot allow'. Here the speech becomes about demonising all protesters as violent criminals

2/ The bulk of his commentary shifts to demonising a non-specific group, shifting the focus of a fight for justice into a criminality trope of tackling 'criminals, looters, rioters'. He also says the'biggest victims' are peace-loving systems. This is unsubstantiated hyperbole

3/ His second section, rather than say focusing on a history of racist police brutality, is simply to try and 'evidence' the violence of non-specific crowds. He could choose to focus on peaceful acts of defiance, but the goal here is to make villains of anyone out in the street

4/ The next para involves a set of binaries (security not anarchy, healing not hatred). These create a simplified and binary worldview that eschew nuance and middle ground. Remember Trump's presidency is about polarisation and radicalisation - not consensus and middle ground

5/ The theme of his next paragraph is about escalation and power, not restoring harmony. He invokes the military, uses terms like 'dominate', threatens to override devolved democratic institutions for the sake of 'law and order'. Essentially this is classic autocratic spiel

6/ His final para is about giving the enemy a face, which is Antifa. Obviously there is no evidence that antifa is responsible for all of this, but this fits with the discourse of many Trump supporters and Trump himself, who prefers to see opposition to him as an organised entity

7/ The alternative is that he has to accept millions of people from multiple backgrounds oppose him. Finally, a quick corpus analysis of his speech. Law is mentioned 10 times, no doubt deliberately, as this speaks to people who do not realise law is not without prejudice

8/ So in short, Trump's speech is based around intimidation, rule by force on a pretext of law an order, smearing all protesters as violent, emphasising violence, highlighting disorder, and trying to find a scapegoat - an enemy within that justifies warlike methods - fin

Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison is increasing charges against Derek Chauvin to 2nd degree in George Floyd’s murder and also charging other 3 officers. This is another important step for justice.
