WASHINGTON (ANP) - De Amerikaanse president Donald Trump heeft in een interview het politiegeweld tegen zwarte Amerikanen gerelativeerd door te zeggen dat er "meer witte Amerikanen" gedood worden door agenten.
De president kreeg tijdens een interview met CBS News de vraag waarom zwarte mensen nog steeds overlijden door toedoen van wetshandhavers. "En ook witte mensen", reageerde Trump. "Wat een vervelende vraag. Ook witte mensen. Meer witte mensen, overigens."
Sinds de dood van de zwarte Amerikaan George Floyd eind mei door een witte politieagent in Minneapolis zijn er in de VS protesten tegen politiegeweld tegen zwarte Amerikanen. Volgens een analyse van de Washington Post is de helft van de mensen die worden gedood door agenten wit, maar worden zwarte Amerikanen disproportioneel vaak gedood door de politie. Zijn vormen 13 procent van de Amerikaanse bevolking, maar worden procentueel meer dan twee keer vaak als witte Amerikanen gedood door de politie.

Hoewel het aantal besmettingen met het nieuwe coronavirus in de Verenigde Staten nog altijd blijft stijgen, claimt de Amerikaanse president Donald Trump toch dat het virus is overwonnen. Dat zei hij zaterdagavond naar aanleiding van de festiviteiten van Independence Day.

‘Onze strategie maakt goede vooruitgang’, klonk het vanuit de tuin van het Witte Huis. ‘We hebben een ongelofelijke overwinning geboekt op deze pest uit China’. Nochtans stijgt het aantal besmettingen in de VS nog altijd voort. Al drie dagen ligt het cijfer boven de 50.000 per dag.

Maar volgens Trump is er al veel geleerd over het coronavirus en zijn ‘de vlammen gedoofd’. De VS hebben volgens de president al zo’n 40 miljoen testen uitgevoerd. In 99 procent van de gevallen was de besmetting ‘compleet onschadelijk’.

Officieel raakten al meer dan 2,8 miljoen Amerikanen besmet met het nieuwe coronavirus, en stierven er zo’n 130.000 aan de infectie, het hoogste aantal ter wereld. Volgens The New York Times stijgt het aantal besmettingen in zeker 39 Amerikaanse staten. In vijf — Alabama, Alaska, Kansas, North Carolina en South Carolina — werden vrijdag nieuwe records opgetekend.

Feest in mineur

Trump wees zaterdag trouwens opnieuw met een beschuldigende vinger naar China voor de uitbraak van het coronavirus. ‘China moet volledige verantwoording afleggen’, klonk het.

Door de coronapandemie vond Independence Day dit jaar in mineur plaats. Op heel wat plaatsen werden parades of vuurwerk afgelast, terwijl in Florida en in Californië stranden gesloten bleven. In Washington had het Witte Huis honderden paramedici uitgenodigd.

Over the weekend, The Post reported that Fauci is now “directly in the president’s crosshairs.” The White House has “moved to sideline Fauci" and released a “lengthy list of the scientist’s comments from early in the outbreak." This was supposed to show that Fauci has been wrong and that his current urgency about spiking cases should be seen with skepticism.

Other news organizations have now followed up, with new reporting on what really drove that move. And it makes Trump look a whole lot worse.

Much of the discussion has been about how unusual it is that the White House would leak campaign-style oppo research about Trump’s own top health official. But less attention has focused on how deranged it is that Fauci has become the enemy — that is, the target for counter-punching — in the first place.

Fauci has become the enemy, of course, because he has prioritized his efforts to understand a pandemic that has killed nearly 135,000 Americans and sickened millions over the imperative of protecting Trump politically at all costs.

It’s also not entirely unusual that Trump would attack someone over whom he has authority within the government. There are enough former administration officials who have been the targets of abuse by Trump after leaving government service that they could form a small basketball league. But there are also a handful who were attacked while still working in his administration: members of the FBI, his former attorney general.

What’s unusual about the White House’s efforts to undermine Anthony S. Fauci, head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and a leading voice on the novel coronavirus pandemic, is that the only way in which Fauci has undercut the president is by being honest about the moment.

As Trump downplays the pandemic, pushing to reopen schools and restart the economy, Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, offers bluntly pragmatic assessments that undercut the sunny message. Fauci has said the two New Yorkers have not met since 2 June and the administration has severely curtailed his TV appearances.

Last week Trump told Fox News that Fauci made “a lot of mistakes” and on Monday he retweeted a post by Chuck Woolery, a former game show host, asserting without evidence: “Everyone is lying. The CDC, Media, Democrats, our Doctors, not all but most, that we are told to trust. I think it’s all about the election and keeping the economy from coming back, which is about the election. I’m sick of it.”

Taking their cue, the president’s lieutenants have worked to amplify their master’s voice on different platforms. For an article published on Saturday, the White House provided the Washington Post with a list of Fauci’s past comments and predictions on the virus that it said were erroneous. It also made the list available to other media outlets, prompting comparisons with the kind of “oppo research” normally reserved for election campaigns.

On Sunday, Adm Brett Giroir, the assistant secretary for health, told NBC’s Meet the Press programme: “I respect Dr Fauci a lot, but Dr Fauci is not 100% right and he also doesn’t necessarily, and he admits that, have the whole national interest in mind. He looks at it from a very narrow public health point of view.”

That evening, Dan Scavino, the White House social media director and deputy chief of staff for communications, posted on Facebook a cartoon lampooning Fauci with public health warnings such as “Indefinite lockdown!”, “Schools stay closed this fall!” and “Shut up and obey!” It was drawn by Ben Garrison, an artist whose work has been condemned for its antisemitic imagery.

A day later, with momentum gathering, Stephen Moore, an economist and Trump adviser, told the Daily Beast website: “We are working on a memo that shows how many times Dr Fauci’s been wrong during not just [this pandemic], but during his entire career.” The memo, he added, is currently entitled “Dr Wrong”.

Then, on Tuesday, the White House trade adviser Peter Navarro wrote a scathing op-ed in the USA Today newspaper that said: “Dr Anthony Fauci has a good bedside manner with the public, but he has been wrong about everything I have interacted with him on. So when you ask me whether I listen to Dr Fauci’s advice, my answer is: only with skepticism and caution.”

The rush to disown Fauci, a leading member of the White House coronavirus taskforce, and earn brownie points with Trump comes as little surprise to seasoned observers.

Michael Steele, former chairman of the Republican National Committee, said: “Everybody who wants to keep their job is going to play the game the way Trump wants them to play it.

CDC chief says Northerners heading South for vacation may be to blame for surge in coronavirus cases, not state reopenings

"We're of the view that there was something else that was the driver. Maybe the Memorial Day, not weekend, but the Memorial Day week, where a lot of Northerners decided to go South for vacations," Redfield said.
He did not provide data to back up his theory that Northerners travelling South are to blame for the surge in cases.

Most of southern states saw infections start rising around June 1, about a week after MD weekend started

But here’s the kicker

Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, also start rising around the same time -- within a week of Memorial Day

Did northern travelers vacation in Idaho, Alaska, Oregon and seed cases there too?

Is it a coincidence many of these states relaxed around the same time?

And how did these northern vacationers skip southern states like Virginia, which was still in phase 1?

And what happened to these vacationers? Did they ever get home?

And why didn't they seed cases in the north before they left?

Bottom line is that this is silliness

Ziekenhuizen VS moeten coronacijfers voortaan naar Witte Huis sturen

De Amerikaanse president Donald Trump heeft ziekenhuizen opgedragen voortaan de actuele coronacijfers niet meer door te geven aan het Amerikaanse RIVM, maar aan een centrale database van het Witte Huis.

Dat meldt de New York Times. Het lijkt erop dat Trump op deze manier het Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) buitenspel wil zetten.

Het kan zo chaotisch worden in het Trump-tijdperk, dat het belangrijk is om de reeks gebeurtenissen in een bepaalde verhaallijn niet uit het oog te verliezen. In feite is de reeks van gebeurtenissen waarbij Donald Trump en Jeff Sessions dient als een herinnering aan waarom iedereen die in bed komt met Trump eindigt spijt van het.

Jeff Sessions was een Amerikaanse senator uit Alabama, en gebaseerd op traagheid en demografie alleen, kon hij waarschijnlijk hebben gehouden op zijn zetel voor het leven. In plaats daarvan gaf hij het op om de procureur-generaal van Donald Trump te worden, wat resulteerde in sessies die werden gekweld, vernederd, uiteindelijk verdreven, en gelukkig ging hij niet naar de gevangenis voor meineed. Sessions besloot toen dat hij zijn oude senaatszetel terug wilde, en dus raakte Trump betrokken – ten gunste van Sessions' Republikeinse tegenstander. Ja hoor, Sessions verloor gisteravond.

En dus is de gênante maar blijvende politieke carrière van Jeff Sessions geëindigd met een gejammer – allemaal omdat hij betrokken raakte bij Donald Trump. Als Sessions gewoon uit de buurt van Trump was gestuurd, zou hij waarschijnlijk nu in de Senaat zitten, een belangrijke commissie voorzitten op basis van anciënniteit, en zich een weg banen door welke rampzalige agenda hij ook wilde duwen. In plaats daarvan is hij toast. Een andere Trump lakei bijt in het stof.

Gov. Kevin Stitt of Oklahoma announced on Wednesday that he has tested positive for the coronavirus, becoming the first governor in the United States known to have been infected during the pandemic.

Mr. Stitt said he did not feel that he had a serious case of the virus.

“It just kind of feels achy, like maybe the start of a little cold is what it feels like right now, but really I feel fine,” Mr. Stitt said in the video interview while sitting at home.

Mr. Stitt’s wife, Sarah, and their six children have tested negative.

He said that he received his test results at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, and that given the timing, he did not believe his infection was linked to President Trump’s rally in Tulsa on June 20. Mr. Stitt was one of thousands who attended the rally, where many officials and Mr. Trump’s supporters decided not to wear masks. A surge in coronavirus cases in and around Tulsa was most likely tied to the rally, the city’s top health official said last week.

But Mr. Stitt said on Wednesday: “I don’t think there was any way it was at the president’s rally.”

Mr. Stitt faced criticism early on in the outbreak, in March, when he posted a photo of himself with his children inside a crowded restaurant at a time when many people in the state were following social distancing protocols.

“It’s packed tonight!” he tweeted at the time.
