Hevige gevechten in Zuid-Oekraïense regio Cherson

In vrijwel de gehele door Russische troepen bezette zuidelijke Oekraïense regio Cherson wordt zwaar gevochten. Het kantoor van de Oekraïense president meldt dat er ook in de nacht hevige strijd is geleverd. "De strijdkrachten van Oekraïne hebben offensieve acties in verschillende richtingen gelanceerd."

Oekraïne liet maandag weten dat het langverwachte tegenoffensief om het zuiden van het land te bevrijden van de Russische invasietroepen in volle gang is. Het voornaamste doel is de bevrijding van Cherson, de enige grote stad die het Russische leger heeft veroverd ten westen van de Dnjepr, die midden door Oekraïne stroomt. Enkele dorpen rond de havenstad zouden al zijn heroverd.

Rusland zei daarop de tegenaanvallen te hebben afgeslagen en de tegenstander zware verliezen te hebben toegebracht in de regio's Cherson en Mikolajiv.

Ukrainian adviser warns progress will be slow as southern counterattack begins

Zelenskiy aide claims troops have broken through Russian defences in several areas of frontline near Kherson

A senior presidential adviser has told Ukrainians not to expect rapid gains, after his country began a long-awaited counteroffensive aiming to retake the southern province of Kherson from Russian forces.

Ukrainian troops had broken through Russian defences in several areas of the frontline near Kherson city, Oleksiy Arestovych, an adviser to President Volodymyr Zelenskiy claimed.

Arestovych said forces were also shelling ferries that Moscow uses to supply Russian-occupied territory on the west bank of the Dnieper river.

But in an update posted to his official Telegram account, Arestovych cautioned against any expectations of a quick win, describing the offensive as a “slow operation to grind the enemy”. “Of course, many would like a large-scale offensive with news about the capture by our military of a settlement in an hour,” he wrote. “But we don’t fight like that … Funds are limited.”

Unverifiable videos of explosions have been posted on Telegram groups in Kherson city and the neighbouring occupied town of Nova Kakhovka. Ukraine’s southern command, meanwhile, said Russia had suffered heavy losses in the last 24 hours, both in terms of men and equipment.

Ukraine first announced the beginnings of a southern offensive in July. The Guardian could not independently verify the assertions.

Zelenskiy did not address the counteroffensive specifically during his Monday evening address, but said: “The occupiers should know: we will oust them to the border. To our border, the line of which has not changed.”

Those who surrendered would be treated under the Geneva conventions, he said, adding: “If they do not listen to me, they will deal with our defenders, who will not stop until they liberate everything that belongs to Ukraine.”

Ukrainian troops had taken back four villages after breaking through the frontline in three places, CNN reported, quoting a Ukrainian military source, with the main target being Kherson. The operation began with heavy shelling of Russian positions at the rear, forcing them to flee, the source was quoted as saying.

Sergiy Khlan, a local deputy and adviser to Kherson’s regional governor told Ukraine’s Pryamyi TV channel that a “powerful artillery attack on enemy positions in ... the entire territory of the occupied Kherson region” was launched on Monday.

Russia’s defence ministry acknowledged a new Ukrainian offensive had been launched in the Mykolaiv and Kherson regions but said it had failed and the Ukrainians had suffered significant casualties, RIA news agency reported. The “enemy’s offensive attempt failed miserably”, it said.

A Ukrainian barrage of rockets left the Russian-occupied town of Nova Kakhovka just east of the city of Kherson without water or power, officials at the Russian-appointed local authority later told the outlet.

The battlefield reports could not be independently verified. In an intelligence note, Britain’s defence ministry said although it was “not yet possible to confirm the extent of Ukrainian advances” its army had increased “artillery fire in frontline sectors across southern Ukraine”.

It added that Ukraine was using “long-range precision strikes to disrupt Russian resupply” lines.

Ukraine’s offensive in the south comes after weeks of a stalemate in a war that has killed thousands, displaced millions, destroyed cities and caused a global energy and food crisis amid unprecedented economic sanctions.

On Monday, a mission from the International Atomic Energy Agency arrived in Kyiv, according to Ukraine’s foreign ministry. The mission is set to travel to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Russian-occupied territory to inspect the plant, which has been damaged by fighting, and lend technical assistance. Russia captured the plant in early March but it is still run by Ukrainian staff.

The world was on edge last week when fighting cut off vital electricity supplies to the plant, disconnecting it from the grid for the first time in history.

The IAEA mission will spend four days at the plant, leaving on Saturday, according to the Wall Street Journal. It remains to be seen if the mission will be able to travel as shelling continues in and around the nuclear plant. Both sides trade blame for the attacks. Ukraine claims they are false-flag attacks.

Ukraine’s state nuclear agency, Energoatom, said on Tuesday that the plant was operating normally and radiation levels had not increased.

The US, Ukraine and the UN have called for the plant to be demilitarised but Russia has said “there are no ongoing discussions” about demilitarisation, Russia’s Tass news agency reported, citing the Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov.

The US has further called for the plant to be shut down. “We continue to believe that a controlled shutdown of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear reactors would be the safest and least risky option in the near-term,” said White House National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby.

Gelukkig heb ik hier ongelijk in gekregen. Ik verwachtte eindeloos gedoe en gezever met die graanschepen maar tot nu toe functioneert het goed. De vraag is waarom. Ik geloof er helemaal niks van dat de Russen ineens humanitair zijn geworden. Dus er moet iets anders aan de hand zijn. Met oppervlakteschepen durven ze niet meer in de buurt te komen, die gaan naar de bodem van de zee en daar hebben ze er al te veel van verloren. Maar met onderzeeërs kunnen ze er wel komen. Ik vermoed dat de politieke schade van graanschepen torpederen met onderzeeërs te groot zou zijn. Dat lijkt ook wat te veel op onbeperkte duikbootoorlog. Ze zullen wel te horen hebben gekregen dat dat hele zware consequenties zal hebben.

Logisch, plaatsen die je zelf bezet beschieten. Volgens de Oekraïners staan ze al in Tomyna Balka, dat is een kilometer of 10 verderop. We gaan het vanzelf te zien krijgen.

Tot nu toe zijn de Oekraïners een heel stuk betrouwbaarder in hun berichtgeving dan de Russen.

Wat mij zeer heeft verbaasd is het feit dat we helemaal niks gehoord hebben over het opruimen van zeemijnen, blijkbaar is er een mijnenvrije route beschikbaar.

Landen als Turkije, Egypte, Pakistan, Soedan en Tunesië zijn allen sterk afhankelijk van tarwe-import uit Oekraïne en Rusland.

Zou e.e.a. met elkaar samenhangen, Turkije bemiddelt in de graandeal....

Idd LS dit is een uit zijn verband gerukt verhaal ... door Russische media de wereld in geholpen (en door vele Russische gelieerde sites is verspreid zoals RT.com).

Dit is dan ook helemaal GEEN resolutie maar een (gezamenlijke) informele statement ... zegt dus niks over de reden waarom landen hier niet aan mee hebben gewerkt (en ook niet over het feit dat ze Oekraïne wel/niet meer steunen).

Ukraine lures Russian missiles with decoys of U.S. rocket system

KYIV, Ukraine — Ukraine may be outgunned but in the latest sign it is not yet outfoxed, a fleet of decoys resembling advanced U.S. rocket systems has tricked Russian forces into wasting expensive long-range cruise missiles on dummy targets, according to interviews with senior U.S. and Ukrainian officials and photographs of the replicas reviewed by The Washington Post.

The Ukrainian decoys are made out of wood but can be indistinguishable from an artillery battery through the lens of Russian drones, which transmit their locations to naval cruise missile carriers in the Black Sea.

“When the UAVs see the battery, it’s like a VIP target,” said a senior Ukrainian official, referring to unmanned aerial vehicles encountering long-range artillery replicas.

After a few weeks in the field, the decoys drew at least 10 Kalibr cruise missiles, an initial success that led Ukraine to expand the production of the replicas for broader use, said the senior Ukrainian official, who like others spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive military matters.

The use of rocket system decoys, which has not been reported previously, is one of many asymmetrical tactics Ukraine’s armed forces have adopted to fight back against a bigger and better-equipped invading enemy. In recent weeks, Kyiv’s operatives have blown up rail and electricity lines in occupied Russian territory, detonated explosives inside Russian arms depots and assassinated suspected collaborators.

The destruction of Ukrainian replicas may partially account for Russia’s unusually boastful battle damage assessments on Western artillery, particularly the U.S.-made High Mobility Artillery Rocket System, or HIMARS.

“They’ve claimed to have hit more HIMARS than we have even sent,” one U.S. diplomat observed.
