‘Just to survive’: Wagner fighters recount the horrors of battle in eastern Ukraine

Two former fighters of the Russian private military company Wagner have told CNN of their horrific experiences on the battlefield in eastern Ukraine, and how anyone who faltered was immediately shot by their own commanders.

The two fighters were captured by Ukrainian forces late last year. CNN is not disclosing their identities for their own safety. Both are married with children and were recruited while in prison. One was serving a 20-year sentence for manslaughter.

For security reasons, the Ukrainians kept a presence in the room where the interview took place. CNN told the fighters that they could end the interview at any time they wished. But they spoke in detail for more than an hour.

The two fighters told of hideous losses in “first wave” assaults reminiscent of World War I charges.

“There were 90 of us. Sixty died in that first assault, killed by mortar fire. A handful remained wounded,” said one, recalling his first assault near the village of Bilohorivka. “If one group is unsuccessful, another is sent right away. If the second one is unsuccessful, they send another group.”

The other fighter was involved in an assault lasting five days, through a forest near the city of Lysychansk on the Luhansk-Donetsk border in eastern Ukraine.

“The first steps into the forest were difficult because of all the landmines spread out. Out of 10 guys, seven were killed immediately,” he said.

“You can’t help the wounded. The Ukrainians were firing heavily on us, so even if their wounds were minor, you’ve got to keep going, otherwise you’re the one getting hit by the fire.

“You are at it for five days, people dying right next to me, praying to God, begging for water. You think that you can put down your weapon and nothing else will happen. And then the fight starts again 10 minutes later, and [the Ukrainians] keep coming after you. There is no feeling attached to it. Just wave after wave.”

“Four hundred [Wagner fighters] were brought there, and then more and more, all the time.”

The prisoner said a self-preservation instinct had kicked in for him, but others froze. “Some stop right there in the forest and drop their weapons. But to drop your weapons is to come under sniper fire and die.”

There was no evacuation of the wounded, he added. “If you’re wounded, you roll away on your own at first, any way you can, somewhere neutral where there’s no fire, and if there’s no one around, you administer first aid to yourself,” he said.

Casualties piled up by the dozen, the men said. “When the casualties arrive, you get orders to load them, and you don’t really think who’s dead and who’s wounded,” one of the fighters said.

Throughout their several weeks on the front lines, the two men said they had only one instinct.

“Just to survive. I just had the desire to survive, no matter what the cost,” said the prisoner involved in the forest attack.

They became numb to the casualties and the killing of the Ukrainian soldiers they faced. “You’d think you’d feel something [after killing someone], but no, you just keep going.”

The alternative to walking through minefields towards Ukrainian artillery was just as lethal, according to the men’s accounts.

“We couldn’t retreat without orders because if we don’t comply with the order, we will be killed,” said one of the prisoners.

“One man stayed at a position, he was really scared, it was his first assault. We received an order to run forward. But the man hid under a tree and refused. This was reported to the command and that was it. He was taken 50 meters away from the base. He was digging his own grave and then was shot.”

The other fighter reported a similar situation: “Our commander was told that if anyone gets cold feet, he would have to be eliminated. And if we failed to eliminate him, we would be eliminated for failing to eliminate him.”

British weaponry and military vehicles could be manufactured in Ukraine under plans that would mark a deepening of the country’s ties with Nato.

Senior UK defence industry officials are discussing the plans with their counterparts in Kyiv, with any deal likely to be seen as a significant strengthening of Britain’s relationship with Ukraine.

British executives have travelled there with a view to setting up joint ventures that would manufacture arms and vehicles locally under licence.

Other European defence companies are also in talks with Ukraine, with British companies keen not to be beaten to the punch by French and German rivals. A race is on to put the UK “at the front of the queue”, one executive told The Telegraph.

It comes after Rishi Sunak opened the door to Britain sending fighter jets to Ukraine following a plea from Volodymyr Zelensky, the Ukrainian president, during his surprise trip to the UK last week.

Any joint venture is likely to require sign-off from Mr Sunak. Russia has repeatedly threatened retaliation against the West for sending arms to Ukraine, and any manufacturing support is likely to further inflame tensions.

Russia may have lost an entire elite brigade near a Donetsk coal-mining town, Ukraine says

KYIV — As Russia probes Ukraine’s defensive lines ahead of an expected offensive, it might have lost the entire elite 155th naval infantry brigade while storming Vuhledar, a coal-mining town in the Donetsk region.

“A large number of enemy forces, including the command staff, were destroyed near Vuhledar and Mariinka in Donetsk Oblast,” Oleksiy Dmytrashkivskyi, head of the united press center of the Tavriskiy District of Ukrainian defense forces, told POLITICO. “In addition, over the past week, the enemy lost about 130 units of equipment, including 36 units of tanks.”

Russian forces also were losing 150-300 marines a day near Vuhledar, Dmytrashkivskyi said.

Russian tactical failures around Vuhledar have likely further weakened the Russian ultranationalist community’s belief that Moscow’s forces are able to launch a decisive offensive operation, the Institute for the Study of War reported in its latest update. Pro-Kremlin military bloggers have been mourning huge losses and criticizing the Russian command for sending the elite troops in frontal attacks.

In his Telegram military blog, Girkin, who uses the pseudonym Igor Strelkov, echoed the ongoing criticism of the Russian military community toward the commanders. He confirmed that Russian forces near Vuhledar had to advance in motorized and tank columns along narrow roads and ended up piling up.

“Ukrainian artillery shoots exceptionally accurately. More than 30 units of armored vehicles were lost. Dozens of tankmen were killed. Even more marines, special forces, and motorized riflemen died,” Girkin said. “All these losses turned out to be ‘one-sided’ — the Ukrainians shot the attackers like in a shooting gallery.”

ik hoop oprecht dat ze gaan proberen met landingsboten willen gaan aanvallen, zodra ze op zee zijn worden ze direct bestookt met raketten daar is geen ontkomen aan. Verder liggen er overal mijn en dus ik wens ze veel succes. Voor een serieuze aanval bij de grens met Belarus hebben ze vrijwel geen materiaal meer, als ze nu al maanden doen om een paar dorpjes te veroveren met de verliezen die ze nu leiden dan is de oorlog binnen 1 jaar over. Ik niet.
- Ze hebben hun handen al vol aan het Donbasoffensief en het schijnt dat de spulletjes en de poppetjes een beetje op beginnen te raken.
- Die landingsvaartuigen lopen groot risico om al op zee vernietigd te worden, russen hebben daar geen overwicht.
- En de Poolse grens, daar durft geen rus te komen, die weten ook wel dat er dan 'ergens vandaan' precisiebombardementen komen.

Maar goed, het is wijs om je tegenstander nooit te onderschatten!

Russian control of Dvorichne is still disputed. That the AFU would have withdrawn from Hryanykivka is unconfirmed.

I got an update from a unit that works near Kreminna. Fighting is heaviest north of Dibrova to Yampolivka. Russian troops have initially made some territorial gains there in recent days. In Kreminna forest, the AFU has recaptured territory, which is also what Zaluhznyi hinted at.

Bakhmut is hermetically sealed and accessible only to military personnel. Krasna Hora is lost, that happened two days ago. Fighting is in Paraskoviivka. Around Ivanivske-Stupochky the situation is unchanged. The bridge over the canal west of Ivanivske has been blown up by the AFU ( Armed Forces of Ukraine )

The M03 ( grote weg ) to the north is not under Russian control. The T0504 ( weg ) south of Chasiv-Yar has also not yet been cut, but is within Russian artillery fire range.

I am convinced that Bakhmut can persevere, but that preparations are now being made for an endgame. More clarity in the coming days/week.

De Wagner huursoldaten eisen van de gemobiliseerden dat zij de gewonde Wagner soldaten naar het ziekenhuis moeten evacueren en daarbij de dreiging dat wanneer de gewonde Wagner soldaat niet levend het ziekenhuis haalt, de gemobiliseerde zal worden gedood

Murz wijst er nu op dat gemobiliseerden tijdens hun verlof zichzelf verminken ( in de eigen benen schieten of hun arm breken ) om maar niet terug te hoeven naar het front.
Niet omdat ze bang zijn om tegen de Oekraïners te vechten, maar omdat ze bang zijn opdrachten te krijgen, die ze niet in eigen hand kunnen houden en daarvoor vermoord worden door hun eigen Russische collega's

Daar komt nog bij dat hulpgoederen voor de gemobiliseerden, ingepikt worden door de Wagner soldaten

Murz claims Wagner convicts threaten Russian mobiks evacuating them from the frontlines with death if the latter don't get them alive to the hospital. He says there are already cases of shooting.

Additionally, humanitarian aid intended for mobiks goes straight to Wagnerites.

Wanneer de diverse groepen in het Russisch leger zo vijandig tegenover elkaar staan, zal er weinig eenheid zijn om de Oekraïners daadwerkelijk en effectief aan te vallen
