Volkswagen New Gearbox Enables CO2 Savings

Volkswagen has developed a new state-of-the-art manual gearbox: the MQ281, as it is known, works efficiently and saves up to five grams of CO2 per kilometre depending on the engine-gearbox combination. The new Passat is the first vehicle to be equipped with the MQ281, followed by almost all vehicle classes of the Volkswagen Group. Nobody took much notice of manual gearboxes until now. However, only slight modifications were sufficient to improve efficiency and consumption with a huge impact on emissions and the environment. Although they function unobtrusively, manual gearboxes have a significant share of the gearbox market worldwide due to a high installation rate.

The trend towards vehicles from the SUV segment with large-diameter wheels places high demands on the gearbox. Mr Helmut Göbbels, Head of Manual Gearbox and Four-Wheel Drive Development at Volkswagen said that “With the MQ281, we have developed a highly efficient manual gearbox that reliably meets these demands – and is soon to be introduced into a number of vehicle classes in the volume segment.”

The MQ281 has a torque spectrum of 200 to 340 newton metres, which means it completely or partially supersedes the current Volkswagen gearbox designs with the internal designations MQ250 and MQ350 respectively.

It is based on a 2.5 shaft concept and boasts a high gear spread of maximum 7.89. On the one hand, this guarantees good driving off performance – even for heavy vehicles with large wheels – and facilitates, on the other hand, “downspeeding”, which is (fuel-saving) driving in high gears with low engine speed.

Preparations Underway at Audi Bollinger Hofe for Audi e-tron GT

The electric powered Audi e-tron GT will be manufactured alongside the Audi R8 supercar at Audi Sport GmbH’s production facilities in the Böllinger Hofe from late 2020. At present, the required construction work is underway at the R8 production facilities to integrate the electric sports car. Additional logistics halls are being added and state-of-the-art equipment set up in the body shop and assembly areas. The modification work will largely take place during ongoing production, with the completion date slated for the fall.

Through fall 2019, two new lightweight construction halls will provide around another 10,000 square meters (107,639.1 sq ft) for logistics in the Bollinger Hofe. The new halls on the west side will lie directly adjacent to the existing assembly and body shop facilities. “Since the Bollinger Hofe was already created in the design phase as a small-series production facility with innovative and flexible production processes, that gives us the ideal conditions to produce the e-tron GT alongside the Audi R8,” says Production Manager Wolfgang Schanz. “Here a unique combination of craftsmanship and smart factory is coming to life.”

The Audi e-tron GT and the Audi R8 will be produced separately in the body shop. While the body shop for the R8 stands out with its largely handcrafted finish, a separate, highly automated body shop facility is being created for the e-tron GT. A complete mezzanine level with conveyor system now occupies some 4,000 square meters (43,055.6 sq ft). The assembly line is being extended by 20 cycles, making 36 in total, for the joint production of the R8 and e-tron GT. As part of this upgrade, new conveyor systems are being integrated, since assembly in future will no longer rely solely on driverless transport vehicles, but will also include an electrified monorail system.

In future, the basement in the Bollinger Hofe will also be used for production, with painted bodies of the R8 and e-tron GT stored here temporarily. As part of this development, the existing areas have been extended by 800 square meters (8,611.1 sq ft). From this area, driverless transport vehicles autonomously bring the R8 and e-tron GT bodies using an elevator from the basement straight to the assembly line on the ground floor.

Audi A4 Product Line with a New Look

Meer omzet Volkswagen in moeilijke markt

WOLFSBURG (AFN/BLOOMBERG) - Volkswagen heeft in het tweede kwartaal een hogere omzet in de boeken gezet vergeleken met een jaar eerder. De onderneming houdt daarnaast vast aan zijn financiële doelstellingen, ondanks de moeilijke marktomstandigheden in de autosector. Concurrenten Daimler en BMW stelden eerder juist hun prognoses neerwaarts bij.

De opbrengsten stegen tot 65 miljard euro, tegen 61 miljard euro in het tweede kwartaal van 2018. Dat betekende een groei van 6,6 procent. Het Duitse concern groeide het snelst in Zuid-Amerika terwijl in Azië de zaken juist wat minder gingen. De autoverkopen kwamen wel lager uit dan een jaar eerder, op 2,8 miljoen voertuigen.

De winst, exclusief bijzondere tegen- en meevallers, bedroeg 5 miljard euro. Dat was een jaar geleden nog 5,6 miljard euro. Dat kwam neer op een krimp van 8 procent.

Hogere omzet voor Volkswagen Group

Autofabrikant Volkswagen kende in het tweede kwartaal van 2019 een hogere omzet, in vergelijking met dezelfde periode een jaar eerder. De omzet van de groep groeide met 6,6% naar een slordige €65,2 mrd. Dat blijkt donderdag uit de kwartaalcijfers van de groep, die naast Volkswagen ook merken als Skoda, Audi en Porsche onder zich heeft.

Het bedrijf houdt vast aan de financiële outlook. In tegenstelling tot concurrenten Daimler, het moederbedrijf van Mercedes, en BMW. Zij stelden de prognoses neerwaarts bij. Na opening van de beurs in Frankfurt steeg het aandeel met 2,1%.

Het bedrijfsresultaat, voor bijzondere tegen- en meevallers, nam met 8,1% af naar €5,1 mrd. De winst voor belastingen steeg ten opzichte van hetzelfde kwartaal in 2018 met 22,1% tot €5,4 mrd. Die hoge stijging heeft voornamelijk te maken met een speciale reservering rondom het dieselschandaal, die in 2018 het resultaat drukte.

Teruggang in de auto-industrie

Volkswagen verkocht minder auto's. In het tweede kwartaal daalde de totale autoverkopen van 2,8 naar 2,7 miljoen auto's. Die daling was vooral merkbaar in Azië, waar de vraag naar passagiersvoertuigen op de Chinese markt sterk is gedaald. Volkswagen kende de grootste groei in Zuid-Amerika.

De auto-industrie heeft te kampen met strubbelingen. Een afnemende vraag, toenemende concurrentie, volatiele wisselkoerstrends, strengere registratie-eisen, wereldwijde handelsspanningen en de hoge investeringen die nodig zijn voor de ontwikkeling van elektrische en autonoom rijdende auto's drukken het rendement van autofabrikanten.

Volkswagen schrijft dat een verbetering in het modellen-aanbod de daling in bestellingen en negatieve valuta-effecten heeft gecompenseerd. Zo biedt Volkswagen sportievere modellen aan, zoals de VW T-Roc crossover en de Skoda Karoq. Het Duitse concern liep in dit segment jarenlang achter.

Powerful Elegance - Audi Q3 Sportback

Audi is adding a compact SUV in coupé shape to its model range: the Audi Q3 Sportback. The new model combines the strong presence and versatile everyday convenience of an SUV with the sporty elegance and agile handling of a coupé. This makes it the first compact crossover of the Audi brand.

The Audi Q3 Sportback stands for strength and precision to an equal degree, and reflects this in all design details. The black grille of the octagonal Singleframe is strongly three-dimensional in design, and this makes it particularly sporty. The same applies for the trapezoidal air inlets and the expressive bumper with its flat blade. The coupé-like passenger cabin acts as a contrast to the distinctive attachments, which are painted in contrasting colors and thus emphasize the SUV character. The low roofline gives way to flat D-pillars and ends in a roof edge spoiler. As a result, the Audi Q3 Sportback appears much longer than its sister model Q3. In addition, the SUV-coupé is almost three centimeters flatter, and thus has a more muscular appearance. Above the wheels, strong contours draw attention to the quattro drive, which comes as standard with most engines. Many light and shadow effects arise on the plastic-formed rear. The low window, flanked by aero trims, and the sporty bumper, which takes up the look of the air inlets, emphasize the width of the Audi Q3 Sportback. The reversing lights contribute to this as well: they run inwards in a tapered shape, just like the flat headlights. Audi supplies the latter in three versions up to Matrix LED technology, whose adaptive high beam intelligently illuminates the road as best suits the driving situation.

The Audi Q3 Sportback offers driving fun on various terrains. In the city, on long-haul routes, or on easy terrain – the compact crossover is a dynamic all-rounder. It features progressive steering as standard, whose gear ratio becomes increasingly direct as the steering angle increases, and the sport suspension.

On request, the suspension is available with damper control, which further increases the range between dynamism and comfort. Depending on the driving situation, road condition, and personal preferences, the driver can vary the car’s characteristics via the standard dynamic handling system, Audi drive select, in six profiles, including the offroad mode. In addition to the engine and transmission set-up, this system also influences the electronically adjustable shock absorbers and the steering assistance. As an option, the hill descent control can offer support: it keeps the speed selected by the driver constant on an incline greater than 6%.

Volkswagen Honors Corning as Top Global Supplier

Corning announced that it received a 2019 Volkswagen Group Award from Volkswagen AG at the company’s 17th annual global supplier award ceremony in Leipzig, Germany, earlier this month. Corning was recognized with the Global Performance Champion award, one of six Volkswagen Group Award categories, for its partnership in supplying particulate filters for high-performance emissions control. Mr Steffen Schmid, Volkswagen commercial account director, Corning Environmental Technologies, who accepted the award said that “Corning is honored to be recognized for its commitment to Volkswagen Group. We are proud to help Volkswagen solve technology challenges with innovative and high-quality products as well as reliable supply to support their ongoing transformation.”

Corning has been partnering with Volkswagen for almost 40 years. Most recently, Corning developed new products, such as Corning® DuraTrap® GC gasoline particulate filters and Corning® DuraTrap® AT HP diesel particulate filters, that support the Volkswagen Group. The products address tightening regulations in particulate emissions and are being leveraged in emissions control systems across many car models in Europe and Asia.

From its global network of more than 40,000 suppliers, Volkswagen awarded eight companies across the six award categories at this year’s ceremony. Awards were presented by members of the Volkswagen Group’s Board of Management, and the Volkswagen and Volkswagen Components brands.

Audi lanceert de Citycarver: een extra stoere A1

Zijn naam klinkt als een futuristische stadscooter, maar zo revolutionair is de Audi Citycarver niet. Wat is dit dan wel? Een uitbundig aangeklede A1 Sportback, met een ruiger uiterlijk, een hoger onderstel en extra veel luxe.

Aan de buitenkant zie je meteen dat deze A1 anders-dan-anders is. Ten opzichte van de standaard Sportback (zie de laatste twee foto’s onderaan om te vergelijken) is onder meer de grille veranderd. De Citycarver heeft een grotere versie met acht hoeken (in plaats van zes) waardoor hij meer op de Q-modellen van Audi moet lijken. Ook zijn de wielen groter dan normaal (vanaf 17 inch) en krijgt de Citycarver stoerdere bumpers, dikkere randen rond de wielkasten en langs de dorpels.

Alweer een SUV van Audi? Dit voegt de Q3 Sportback toe

Het blijft niet bij uiterlijk vertoon, want ook het onderstel is aangepast. Zo staat de Citycarver zo’n 3,5 centimeter hoger op zijn wielen dan een standaard A1, waardoor hij zich volgens Audi beter op zijn plek voelt bij licht terreinrijden. Verwacht geen auto die door een diepe modderpoel kan waden: de aandrijving gaat als vanouds alleen naar de voorwielen. In de praktijk zal je het hogere onderstel vooral merken door de iets hogere instap.

Volkswagen Brand Boosts Sales Revenue & Profit

The Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand was able to increase its sales revenue and operating profit in the first six months of the year despite a slight fall in deliveries. Driven by the improved product mix, the sales revenue of the Volkswagen brand grew by 3.4% to EUR 44.1 billion. In the first half of the year, the brand was able to gain market shares. Nevertheless, deliveries fell by 3.9% to 2,998,200 vehicles as a result of the overall weak market conditions.

The Volkswagen brand is continuing its product offensive this year, especially adding SUV models such as the new T-Cross to its portfolio. Demand for these model variants continues to be strong in many regions across the segments concerned.Operating profit before special items after six months was 7.4% higher than in the first half of 2018, at EUR 2.3 billion. The operating return on sales increased to 5.2%. In the second quarter, there were no further special items resulting from litigation risks, after about €400 million had been booked in the first quarter.

Board Member for Finance Dr Arno Antlitz said that “In a difficult market environment, the Volkswagen brand developed very satisfactorily in the first half of the year. We were able to record improvements in operating profit and return on sales compared with the very good figures for the first half of 2018. The operating profit was supported by factors including the continuing product offensive, the optimization of fixed costs and progress with the turnaround in the regions. We intend to use this positive momentum to secure our return on sales targets. We will further strengthen our competitive position through targeted investments in e-mobility and digitalization."

Revenue and return target confirmed
In the current financial year, the Volkswagen brand expects that the operating return on sales will be within the target corridor of four to five%. The brand does not expect the second stage of the changeover to the WLTP test cycle to have a significant financial impact in the current financial year. As regards sales revenue, the Volkswagen brand continues to expect an increase of up to five%.

Aanklacht ex-topman Audi in sjoemeldieselzaak

INGOLSTADT (AFN/BLOOMBERG) - Aanklagers in München hebben de voormalig topman van autobouwer Audi, Rupert Stadler, officieel in staat van beschuldiging gesteld vanwege zijn rol in het dieselgateschandaal. De aanklacht is onderdeel van een breder onderzoek naar Volkswagen, het moederbedrijf van Audi. Stadler zou zich onder meer schuldig gemaakt hebben aan vervalsing en misleiding.

Stadler was volgens het openbaar ministerie op de hoogte van de fraude binnen het bedrijf en hield dat moedwillig onder de pet. Drie andere verdachten zouden motoren voor Audi, Volkswagen en Porsche hebben ontwikkeld met illegale software die de waardes van uitlaatgassen beïnvloedde. Stadler heeft al enkele maanden vastgezeten, mede omdat werd gevreesd dat hij een getuige zou hebben gemanipuleerd.

Het dieselschandaal kostte Volkswagen inmiddels 30 miljard euro. Volkswagen manipuleerde de motoren van zo'n 11 miljoen dieselvoertuigen om de uitstoot van onder meer CO2 minder te doen lijken dan het daadwerkelijk was.

Porsche Introduces New 911 Carrera Coupé and 911 Carrera Cabriolet Models

Porsche is expanding its eighth-generation of the 911 range with the announcement today of the new Carrera models. This expansion to the line-up of the iconic sports car includes both a Coupé and Cabriolet body style. The 911 Carrera is powered by a 385 PS version of the charismatic 3.0-litre, six-cylinder boxer engine with twin turbocharging. This power output is 15 PS higher than its predecessor.

The Carrera models may be the traditional starting point in the 911 model range, yet they share their premium-quality standard features virtually unchanged from the 450 PS Carrera S that was launched last November. Key highlights include the advanced interior with 10.9-inch touchscreen display, comprehensive connectivity and also assistance systems like the global innovation of Porsche Wet Mode that helps modulate the car’s behaviour on wet roads. The 911 Carrera is distinguished externally from the Carrera S models by its smaller diameter wheels and brakes and individual tailpipe covers on the exhaust system.

As is typical of all 911 models, the engine, chassis and braking system of the Carrera are designed to set the standard for exclusive sporting performance. The 3.0-litre, six-cylinder boxer engine of the 911 Carrera generates its power largely through the smaller turbines and compressors that feature in the new turbochargers. The power is fed to the rear wheels via an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. This enables the 911 Carrera Coupé to accelerate from 0-62 mph in 4.2 seconds, with a top speed of 182 mph. The optional Sport Chrono Package shaves a further 0.2 seconds off the benchmark sprint. The combined fuel consumption range of the Coupé is 26.6 – 28.5 mpg, while the Cabriolet records 26.2 – 28.0 mpg. NEDC equivalent CO2 emissions Combined are 206 – 210 g/km.

The dynamic chassis set-up includes 235/40 ZR tyres on 19-inch diameter alloy wheels on the front axle. However, the mixed tyre diameter configuration front:rear sees 20-inch wheels with 295/35 ZR tyres at the rear. Stopping power is provided on both axles by 330-millimetre diameter brake discs with black, four-piston monobloc fixed callipers.

Massavernietiging van ruim 100.000 auto's in de VS

Volkswagen heeft 102.000 auto's in de VS vernietigd. Daarmee voegt het concern een nieuw hoofdstuk toe aan het dieselschandaal. De auto's waren uitgerust met de beruchte sjoemelsoftware en de verwachting was dat ze na herstel gewoon weer verkocht zouden worden.

Het Duitse financiële tijdschrift Wirtschaftswoche zegt officiële documenten in handen te hebben waaruit de massavernietiging blijkt. Het concern zou het in deze papieren opbiechten aan het Amerikaanse ministerie van Justitie en de federale milieu-autoriteit EPA. De maatregel baart opzien omdat hiermee opnieuw een slag aan het milieu is toegediend. De ooit met de nodige CO2-vervuiling geproduceerde auto's hadden nog jarenlang dienst kunnen doen, maar zijn nu verworden tot pakjes schroot.

,,Deze maatregel getuigt niet van gezond verstand‘’, klaagt Marion Tiemann van Greenpeace Duitsland tegenover Wirtschaftswoche. Bij de productie van 100.000 auto's komt een half miljoen ton aan CO2 vrij, schatten milieu-organisaties in. Dat is net zoveel CO2 als als 50.000 inwoners van een stad per jaar produceren.

Volkswagen zat met de enorme hoeveelheden foute diesels in de maag. Het concern moest vanaf 2016 op last van de Amerikaanse autoriteiten bijna 400.000 auto's terugkopen omdat ze waren uitgeruste met de beruchte sjoemelsoftware. Dit alleen al zou Volkswagen 10 miljard dollar hebben gekost. De auto's van het type Golf, Passat en Jetta, maar ook veel Audi's stonden lange tijd gestald op de immense parkeerterreinen van een rugbystadion in Detroit en op 36 andere plekken in de VS. Ze stonden in de woestijn van Californië, op een racecircuit in Colorado en zelfs naast een kerncentrale bij Seattle. Maar volgens Wirtschaftswoche blijkt uit satellietbeelden dat de meeste auto's de afgelopen maanden als sneeuw voor de zon verdwenen zijn.

Meer dan 102.000 diesels zijn de afgelopen tijd door Volkswagen vernietigd, ontdekte Wirtschaftswoche. Niet op aandringen van de autoriteiten, maar op eigen initiatief van de autofabrikant. Er zijn er nu nog 261.000 over en die wil de fabrikant herstellen en opnieuw in de verkoop brengen. Er wordt driftig samengewerkt met veilinghuizen om de grote aantallen auto's aan de man te brengen.

Besmet
De grote vraag is natuurlijk waarom Volkswagen tot de massavernietiging van 102.000 auto's heeft besloten. Officieel wil de autofabrikant tegenover Wirtschaftswoche alleen maar kwijt dat het gaat om ‘verouderde modellen in slechte conditie’. Maar de onderzoeksjournalisten trekken hun eigen conclusie: Volkswagen wilde zo snel mogelijk van deze ‘besmette’auto's af. Stilstaande auto's kosten geld: voor het parkeren moet worden betaald en met de dag daalt de restwaarde. En om ze nog enigszins in conditie te houden, werden de auto's elke maand een keer gestart en werd er een stukje mee gereden. Ze werden ook elke maand gewassen. Intussen was er een ander probleem: als Volkswagen die honderdduizenden auto's in één keer op de markt zou brengen, zou dat de markt voor gebruikte diesels schade toebrengen. De marktprijzen van de occasions zouden hierdoor onder druk komen te staan en daarmee snijdt Volkswagen zichzelf, en vooral zijn dealers, in de vingers. Massavernietiging leek dus de beste oplossing.

Europa
De Europese auto's met sjoemelsoftware hebben een heel andere behandeling gekregen. Volkswagen is in Europa niet gedwongen om ze van consumenten terug te kopen. In plaats daarvan volstaat een aanpassing van de motortechniek, waartoe de consument niet verplicht is. En tot een schadevergoeding aan consumenten, zoals in de VS, is het hier al helemaal nooit gekomen.

De affaire met de sjoemelsoftware is het grootste schandaal uit de geschiedenis van de Duitse auto-industrie. Jarenlang gebruikte Volkswagen software die herkende of een auto op de rollenbank in een testlaboratorium stond of op de weg reed. In het ene geval werden de schadelijke uitlaatgassen beperkt, in de andere niet. Zo ontkwam de autofabrikant aan de steeds strengere milieu-eisen en daaruit voortvloeiende belastingen.

Er lopen nog tal van rechtszaken en een aantal managers van Volkswagen en Audi zit in de cel. De gevolgen van het schandaal waren desastreus, niet alleen voor de directie en klanten van Volkswagen, maar ook voor het imago van diesel. Nadat bleek dat veel diesels schadelijker voor het milieu waren dan fabrikanten tot dan toe hadden verkondigd, besloten veel steden om dieselauto's uit hun centra te weren. En vooral in Europa raakte diesel uit de gratie: de verkoopcijfers laten sinds het schandaal een almaar dalende lijn zien. De Volkswagen Groep heeft intussen zijn plannen om volledig elektrische auto's op de markt te brengen in een stroomversnelling gebracht.

New e-tron 50 Quattro Will Bring First Fully Electric Audi

A second version of the Audi e-tron charged with opening up the benefits of the first fully electric Audi to a wider audience has been confirmed for series production and will launch in the UK in 2020. The Audi e-tron 50 quattro will complement the existing e-tron 55 quattro model, its 71 kWh battery and two electric motors providing for a range of up to 186 miles according to the WLTP test cycle and its 120kW charging capability facilitating recharging to 80 per cent capacity in around 30 minutes at fast-charging stations.

A product of the carbon-neutral Audi Brussels plant, the e-tron 50 quattro combines a high level of efficiency with strong and instantly accessible performance. Like the versions which came before it, the entry-level model also features ‘e-quattro’ all-wheel-drive delivered by an electric motor mounted on each axle in this application these generate a combined total of 230 kW and 540 Nm (398.3 lb-ft) of torque, and are capable of propelling the electric SUV from 0 to 62mph in 7.0 seconds on the way to an electronically governed top speed of 118mph. In order to achieve the highest efficiency, only the rear electric motor is active in most driving situations, while the front electric motor is activated predictively when needed. The regulation of the electric all-wheel drive is extremely fast, highly connected and very precise. In combination with modern suspension components including air suspension and the e-tron’s low centre of gravity, it provides excellent dynamics and stability.

The battery unit of the Audi e-tron 50 quattro comprises 324 prismatic cells combined in 27 modules. These store up to 71 kWh of energy, which is delivered via a newly calibrated drivetrain and a high voltage system featuring additional optimisations for this application, and facilitate a range of up to 186 miles in the WLTP cycle.

The lower gross weight, which also reduces running resistance, contributes to efficiency, as does the advanced thermal management system with its standard thermal pump. This system regulates the temperature of the interior as well as the battery and cools the electric motors, the power electronics and the charger. In this way it ensures that the high-voltage components enjoy a long service life and enables fast charging with direct current.

The Audi e-tron 50 quattro can charge with up to 120 kW at fast-charge stations, meaning that the energy capacity of the electric SUV can be restored to 80 per cent of its maximum in approximately half an hour. Alternatively, the battery can be supplied with alternating current via a home wallbox. For charging at home, the Audi e-tron 50 quattro is equipped with the compact charging system as standard. It supports a charging capacity of up to 2.3 kW with a 230 volt domestic outlet and up to 11 kW when connected to a 400 volt industrial charge point.

The optional connect charging system, available later this year, adds smart charging functions such as off-peak charging, enabling customers to benefit from variable electricity rates by charging their Audi e-tron at more inexpensive times. In combination with a home energy management system, customers can benefit from additional advantages such as the option to charge with self-generated solar power if a home photovoltaic system is installed. Using the myAudi app, customers can control all charging processes and timers as well as pre-entry climate control via their smartphone.

Audi Combines E-Scooter with Skateboard

With a new e-scooter concept, Audi is responding to the urban trend towards multi-modal mobility. The Audi e-tronScooter, combining the advantages of the electric scooter and the skateboard, is designed for sporty riders. To be transported by car, bus or train, the twelve-kilogram (26-pound) e-scooter can be folded up and conveniently stored in the back of the car, or if preferred pulled like a trolley. Above all, the Audi e-tron Scooter stands out thanks to its handling, which is like surfing waves. The rider has one hand free, and so is able to look around and give hand signals. Production and sales are planned for late 2020.

Mr Thorsten Schrader, project manager for micro-mobility at Audi said that “With the Audi e-tron Scooter, we appeal to customers who are on the move in cities, sustainably and multi-modally – and for whom style and functionality are important.” Although riders keep one hand on the handlebar, they control the scooter like a skateboard with their feet by shifting their weight. The movable axles with four wheels allow unusually tight curves. “Of course the e-tron Scooter also moves straight ahead. But the feeling of flow only comes when you start carving on asphalt – and that is surprisingly easy with our new concept.”

The steering handle gives stability, holds the battery and the electronics, and carries a display showing the battery status. Riders accelerate and brake by means of a twist grip. The range of 20 kilometers (12.5 miles) is achieved through recuperation when the e-scooter brakes, ie it recovers kinetic energy. The hydraulic foot brake provides additional safety.

At the end of 2020, private customers will be able to buy the Audi e-tron Scooter for about 2,000 euros. Its use in fleets for specific user groups, for example residents of modern urban quarters, is also a possibility. A further option would be to offer the e-scooter as an extra to customers who buy Audi e-tron models. The e-scooter could be charged in the car trunk through a dedicated socket. Users can conveniently cover the last yards, for example from a parking space or charging point to their destination, at a speed of up to 20 kmh (12.5 mph).

Combinatie van elektrische step en skateboard: de Audi e-Tron Scooter

Audi wil een scooter met vier wieltjes op de markt brengen, die een combinatie is van een elektrische step en een skateboard. De productie en de verkoop van de "e-Tron Scooter" is gepland voor eind 2020. Dat heeft de autofabrikant vandaag aangekondigd.

De bestuurder maakt bij de e-Tron Scooter gebruik van een handgreep en kan door zijn gewicht te verplaatsen de step besturen met zijn voeten. Op die manier lijkt het op skateboarden. Door de beweegbare assen en de vier wielen zouden de voertuigen ook scherpe bochten kunnen maken en kunnen ze tot 20 km per uur gaan.

Audi Delivers 155,350 Automobiles in July

Audi delivered around 155,350 automobiles to customers worldwide last month. This represents a decrease of 6.1% compared with the same period last year when extraordinary effects in connection with WLTP had a major impact on deliveries. In July 2018, the sale of models in stock particularly in Europe had contributed to exceptionally high growth in deliveries. In China, the four rings continued their run of success in July 2019: The most important individual market closed last month with a new record of 56,365 cars delivered (+6.0%). In the United States, Audi has increased deliveries in July as well (+0.8%). Since the start of the year, Audi has delivered around 1,061,550 cars worldwide (-4.8%).

Mr Hildegard Wortmann, Member of the Board of Management for Sales and Marketing at AUDI AG said that “The challenges of the switch to WLTP caused unusual fluctuations in deliveries last year. Thanks to the early preparation for the WLTP 2nd act and our ongoing model initiative, we’re now returning to calmer waters and have managed to clearly stabilize the sales situation. We expect our deliveries to perform positively in the second half of the year.”

In response to the switch to the WLTP test cycle and the Audi model initiative, last year the company had adjusted supplies to its dealer and sales network with a view to the future and stocked up the markets. In this way, Audi managed to compensate for restrictions in its freely configurable portfolio which occurred temporarily due to the WLTP switch and model changeovers. The sale of models in stock contributed to exceptionally high delivery figures in July 2018. As such, Germany, for instance, just reported the second-best July in Audi history (26,962 cars) after 2018, with deliveries down 17%. Despite the strong prior-year figures, demand for the Audi Q3 (+36.4%) and the Audi TT (+93.4%) grew here. Audi delivered 179,393 cars (-5.4%) in its domestic market in the first seven months.

In the region of Europe as a whole, deliveries fell year-on-year by 13.3% in July to around 68,750 units due to the aforementioned factors. Cumulative deliveries totaled around 488,250 (-5.9%). Deliveries to customers were up 6.9% in Italy or up 2.4% in the Netherlands in July, for example.

China continued to set records in July following the strong result in June, with deliveries up 6.0% to 56,365 cars. The brand’s flagship, the Audi A8 L (+21.2%), accounted for part of this increase. Demand for the top-selling Audi model in the Middle Kingdom, the A4 L, remained strong, up by 3.7%. In the first half of the year, the A4 L had already managed to race ahead of the competition in China as the bestselling premium sedan.

In the United States, Audi increased deliveries to 19,370 cars (+0.8%) in July. Demand for the A6, A7 and A8 full-size models remained strong. Cumulative deliveries since the start of the year totaled 120,810 vehicles (-5.0%). In the previous months, the model changeover for the Audi Q3 volume model had dampened deliveries. Dealers took receipt of the first units of the new model throughout July. The North America region closed July with around 22,850 vehicles delivered (-1.3%) and cumulative deliveries of around 146,200 cars (-7.5%) for 2019.

Volkswagen July Sales Update

In July, the Volkswagen brand delivered 489,000 vehicles to customers throughout the world, 3.3% fewer than the same month last year. From January to July, Volkswagen handed over 3.49 million vehicles, down 3.8% on the previous year. In a generally declining global market, Volkswagen succeeded in maintaining a stable market share both in July and for the year to date. As expected following the record values of July 2018, Volkswagen in Europe once again delivered fewer vehicles (-8.8%) in July 2019. In China, Volkswagen delivered 2.0% more vehicles in a shrinking overall market and further expanded its market share. In Brazil, Volkswagen recorded a marked increase in deliveries of 13.5%.

Volkswagen Sales Board Member Mr Jürgen Stackmann said that “The situation on the global automobile market with its variety of regional challenges remains unchanged. It is gratifying to note that Volkswagen is maintaining a stable market position throughout the world in a generally shrinking global market. This is especially due to our highly successful SUV models, which have convinced our customers in all regions.”

SKODA Achieves New Delivery Record In July

ŠKODA increased its deliveries in July by 3.1% to 102,700 units (July 2018: 99,700 vehicles), achieving the best July in its history. ŠKODA is growing particularly strongly in Western Europe (+12.3%), Central Europe (+11.2%) and Eastern Europe (+18.4%). High demand for the SUV models KAROQ and KODIAQ has played a major role in the brand’s growth.

Mr Alain Favey, ŠKODA AUTO Board Member for Sales and Marketing, said that “For the first time in our history, we have delivered more than 100,000 vehicles in a July. We are delighted with the high demand for our SUV models KODIAQ and KAROQ. This underlines the fact that we have hit the mark with our SUV campaign. In the coming months, we expect further growth stimulus from our new city SUV ŠKODA KAMIQ, in particular. The attractive new models ŠKODA SCALA MONTE CARLO and KAMIQ MONTE CARLO, which we will be showing for the first time at the IAA 2019, will also give our brand additional momentum.”

In Western Europe, deliveries increased by 12.3% compared to the same period last year to 45,600 vehicles (July 2018: 40,600 vehicles). ŠKODA delivered 18,600 deliveries to customers in its largest single European market, Germany (July 2018: 16,000 vehicles, +16.2%). ŠKODA posted particularly strong growth in France (3,000 vehicles, +24.2%), Italy (2,500 vehicles, +31.2%), the Netherlands (1,800 vehicles, +57.7%), Sweden (1,400 vehicles, +84.0%), Denmark (1,100 vehicles, +17.5%) and Greece (300 vehicles, +38.4%).

In Central Europe, ŠKODA made significant gains over its result of the previous year with 17,500 deliveries (July 2018: 15,700 vehicles, +11.2%). In the Czech Republic, the manufacturer delivered a total of 8,000 vehicles to customers in July (July 2018: 7,200 vehicles, +12.1%). ŠKODA achieved double-digit growth also in Poland (5,300 vehicles, +11.3%), Slovakia (1,800 vehicles, +16.6%) and Croatia (600 vehicles, +18.1%).

In Eastern Europe excluding Russia, ŠKODA’s deliveries increased by 18.4% to 4,900 vehicles (July 2018: 4,100 vehicles). The car manufacturer recorded double-digit growth in the Baltic States (900 vehicles, + 60.1%), Ukraine (700 vehicles, + 59.5%), Serbia (700 vehicles, + 20.1%), Kazakhstan (200 vehicles, + 58.3%) and Bosnia (200 vehicles, + 21.6%).

In the growth market of Russia, ŠKODA delivered 7,300 vehicles (July 2018: 6,600 vehicles, +10.4%).

In the world’s largest single market, China, ŠKODA recorded 21,100 deliveries in July. This represents a year-on-year decline of 15.7% (July 2018: 25,100 vehicles). The passenger car market in China continues to be characterised by consumers’ general reluctance to spend and market uncertainty.

In India, ŠKODA delivered 1,200 vehicles in July (July 2018: 1,400 vehicles, -14.6%).

Mr Daniel Weissland to Lead Audi of America as President

Audi announce that Mr Daniel Weissland has been appointed as President of Audi of America effective September 1st 2019. Mr Weissland, 46, current President and Chief Executive Officer, Volkswagen Group Canada, succeeds interim President and Chief Operations Officer, Cian O’Brien.

A German National, Weissland began his career with Audi in 1999. He spent more than 20 years growing his breadth of automotive expertise in the areas of sales, marketing and product management across the globe.

In his most recent post as head of Volkswagen Group Canada and Volkswagen Canada, Weissland achieved record growth for the business. Weissland is a competitive and driven leader who is known for operationalizing plans, mobilizing organizations and engaging people to consistently deliver business results. In 2018, Volkswagen Canada achieved the best delivery result in the company’s 67 year history.

Mr Hildegard Wortmann, member of the Board of Management for Sales and Marketing, AUDI AG said that “Daniel is a strong leader of people with deep expertise in our business and a track record for driving consistent growth of deliveries, which makes him an excellent fit for President of Audi of America.
