As one would expect, ASML disagrees with that assessment, with the company's CFO telling Bits and Chips that orders are matching the company's expectations and that SemiAnalysis has underestimated the value of reducing process complexity by avoiding costly double- and quadruple-patterning. He also said that one could simply speak with Intel about the complications imposed by double-patterning, a reference to Intel's failures with 10nm which were at least partially due to a lack of EUV technology, to gain an understanding of the difficulties. In fact, Intel is the lead customer for High-NA today, having recently received the first parts of the first High-NA machine shipped to a customer. Let's take a closer look at the issues.

Analist Patrick Moorhead...

OK, I got word back from Intel on the Ohio fab. Here's my take:
The main cause for the perceived “delay” was due to an overly ambitious deadline set in 2022. Achieving a fully functional fab within 3 years would have been an extraordinary feat in a new state without Intel fabs. There have been no alterations to the construction schedules. When P Gelsinger mentioned that Intel was progressing as planned on the earnings call, he was referring to the construction timeline, not the operational readiness of the fab. There were no deliberate slowdowns - no waiting for chips or anything of that sort. Any rumors of a chip production slowdown did not originate from Intel.

Allemaal fijn en wel, maar the impact did its work.

Gartner, IDC Think AI PCs Will Rule The PC Market In A Few Years
By Dylan Martin February 7, 2024, 12:45 PM EST
Gartner says AI PC shipments will double this year and then double again in 2025, when such devices are forecasted to make up 43 percent of total PC shipments. Meanwhile, IDC projects that AI PCs will represent a majority of PC shipments by 2027, thanks in large part to advanced NPUs expected to debut later this year from Intel, AMD and Qualcomm.

UPDATE 1-German court rules against Intel in patent row over chips
Wed, February 7, 2024 at 7:57 PM GMT+1
(Adds R2 CEO statement in last paragraph.)

BERLIN, Feb 7 (Reuters) - A court in Germany has issued an injunction against the sale of some of Intel's chips, in a patent dispute between the U.S. tech giant and a U.S. rival that filed the complaint.

The regional court in Dusseldorf ruled in favour of the California-based R2 Semiconductor in a case involving voltage regulators, a court spokesperson said, confirming an earlier report in the Financial Times.

The court has ordered Intel to refrain from applying the patent in question in Germany, the spokesperson said.

"We are disappointed with the Regional Court of Duesseldorf's decision, and we intend to appeal," an Intel spokesperson said in an emailed response to Reuters.

The spokesperson said that R2 had already filed an unsuccessful suit against the company in the United States and had since "shifted its campaign against Intel to Europe".

Meer van hetzelfde, maar wel het vertrouwen dat ook ASML geeft in Intel's strategie.

ASML's High-NA chipmaking tool will cost $380 million — the company already has orders for '10 to 20' machines and is ramping up production

www.tomshardware.com/tech-industry/ma...

ASML has previously revealed that its next-generation High-NA extreme ultraviolet (EUV) chipmaking tool would cost over twice as much as its existing Low-NA EUV lithography tools, but didn't provide specifics. Now ASML has revealed that its High-NA Twinscan EXE lithography machines will cost around $380 million (€350 million), reports Taipei Times. In contrast, existing Low-NA Twinscan NXE EUV systems cost around €170 million ($183 million), though their prices depend on exact models and configurations. Additionally, ASML told Reuters that it has taken "10 to 20" orders to date from companies, including Intel and SK hynix, and plans to build 20 per year by 2028.
