Troy school voters will vote on Nedap machines
The city Board of Education is switching to electronic voting for the May 15 budget vote and school board election in an effort to avoid last year's balloting problems.

The school board voted unanimously to use Nedap partner in USA LIBERTYVOTE machine instead of the traditional lever machines.

The decision to use new voting machines comes after the 2006 school board elections in which the machines at School 18 malfunctioned. That led one candidate, Ilene Clinton, to challenge the results.

Clinton tried unsuccessfully to have the election results overturned due to malfunctioning voting machines. A voting machine at School 18 failed to count any votes beyond the first two cast in the election.

Clinton finished fifth in a five-way race for three seats on the school board.

"We were advised by the Rensselaer County Board of Elections to look into more effective procedures/machines," said Caroline Boardman, a spokeswoman for the Troy City School District.

The district turned to Liberty Election Systems of Albany for the 10 voting machines it will use at seven polling stations.

The machine to be used by the district is a is a full-face electronic machine that has a function permitting a voter to review their selections on paper before casting a ballot. This is part of the machine's paper audit system.

The new machines will be used at schools 1, 2, 12, 14, 16, 18 and Carroll Hill. The polls will be open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., May 15.

The district will promote the use machines to voters, Boardman said.

"We are going to be publicizing the look, feel and operation of the machines from today until election day," Boardman said.

Nedap machines successfully used in USA elections on May 15, 2007
Machines simple to use, voters say in accordance with the Times Union.

"It seemed pretty straight-forward. It's got the paper backup," said Don Streeter, who cast his ballot at School 18.

The school board decided to switch to the electronic machines supplied for free by Liberty Election Systems of Albany after a lever machine at School 18 malfunctioned in last year's vote. That machine only counted the first two votes cast.

"That's why I was glad to see something done this year," said M. Patricia Gavigan after voting at School 18.

District voters cast ballots on 10 electronic voting machines that were programmed last week at the Rensselaer County Board of Elections with the $88.3 million budget information and the names of the five Board of Education candidates.
