Labelexpo Europe: the show at Brussels Expo will include two new major feature areas
Labelexpo Europe: the show at Brussels Expo will include two new major feature areasLabel Expo

Labelexpo Europe will introduce two new major feature areas at this year’s show, which will kick of at Brussels Expo in September. With four months to go, the exhibition is already larger than the previous edition and organisers are expecting all six halls to sell out soon.

The Digital Print Workshops, first introduced at last year’s Labelexpo Americas, will make their debut in Europe. Three printing technologies (dry toner, liquid toner and inkjet) will be compared against each other during live machine demonstrations run by an independent moderator.
The technologies will be represented by Xeikon, HP and EFI Jetrion respectively. There will be four sessions per day, three of which will see the different companies printing the same job on the same material – a food, pharmaceutical or personal care label. The fourth session will allow participants to print a label of their choice.

For the first time at any Labelexpo show, there will also be a new feature dedicated to package printing. The Package Printing Zone will consist of seminar sessions and working machinery demonstrations.

The aim of this feature is to introduce label printers to opportunities in short-run package printing (including flexible packaging, folding cartons, pouches and sachets). Many of these jobs can be printed on narrow to mid web presses and there will be package printing presses on display at the show.

Roger Pellow, managing director of Labelexpo says, “Labelexpo Europe is set to be the largest edition yet and this will mean more working machinery and more opportunities for label converters and brand owners.

“The Technology Workshops is our most popular feature ever and will allow visitors to evaluate the different printing technologies in detail. Similarly the Package Printing Zone will demonstrate how converters can expand their business beyond labels, often using the same equipment.”

Both the Technology Workshops and the Package Printing Zone will be free to attend for visitors to the show.

Digital printing powers on

Digital printing is offering an increasing number of opportunities to commercial printers, Wayne Robinson looks at how to make the most of your investment
Digital printing is, or ought to be, on the agenda of every printer in the country. It is almost 20 years since the first digital print engines, the Indigo and Xeikon, were launched and while digital’s ascendancy is taking longer than their earlier proponents believed it would, there is no doubt that today digital is a mainstream print solution, and offers tremendous opportunity for printers of every hue and cry.

What’s more digital offers the opportunity to get into new markets, and to add value for clients, and therefore margins for printers. By integrating your digital printer into a web to print solution for instance, by incorporating variable data capability software, by running a completely automated workflow, and inline finishing, the digital print system offers printers a new way or working a and way that should deliver efficiencies and profits.
Those profits though have be worked hard that offset print. A run of 20,00 16pp brochures printed offset for instance is a relatively straightforward job, and relatively straightforward to calculate costs and margin, and with plenty of room for tolerance in there. However a run of five on a digital press requires very careful efficiencies to make it pa, and it could easily go over budget leaving the printer with zip in the profit column.

Those looking for digital printing just to make cheaper A4 pages will not be the ones that make a decent go of it. It is in the value added markets where the real margins are to be made, with variable data, web to print and applications that combine all these such as photobooks that the real money is.

Web to print, that is setting up your own web portal so that your existing and potential customers can order print over the internet, is not a black art, there are several off the shelf solutions available, some for a relatively inexpensive start up cost. Web to print and digital print are natural bedfellows, as everything is digital. In theory the customer keys in the order, if necessary uploads the artwork, and the file is sent straight to the printer queue. For casual customers payment may be made before the job is produced, for regular clients the software automatically invoices. There are other benefits too, Grish Rewal, managing director of Absolute Electronics which supplies the Xeikon printer says, “Web to print is very important as it reduces overheads for sales and account management .”

Web to print also has the benefit of creating closer printer / client relationship, your customer is going to find it harder to turn to someone else if your icon is on their desktop. Kathy Wilson at Ricoh says, “Web to print is very important as it opens up another entry point for print providers, it makes it easier for their customers to do business with them. Web to Print solutions such as DSF provide the ability to manage an on-line catalogue of products including, but not restricted to, digital print products, and this means the customer returns to the print provider for re-ordering of repeat products. By adding products as stationary or coffee mugs or other POS pieces, the on line catalogue is not restricted to digital print.”

Shane Lucas, director, HP Graphic Arts South Pacific says, “Web to print is extremely important as it plays to the strength of short runs, quick turnaround with indistinguishable quality from offset.” Rene Kisselbach at InfoPrint Solutions says, “The key trends are offset printers moving to digital print and enabling precision marketing-based applications (transpromo), his typical involves a significant upgrade in software and workflow, and transaction printers expanding into the same segment, providing marketing-based print and electronic communication services. Web to print functionality is the on-ramp to these new segments.

Herbert Kieleithner at Oce says, “Web to print software is becoming increasingly important as it decreases turnaround times and allows for on the fly checking and correcting of files. A well tuned system can increase the volume for print shops and print rooms by 20-30 per cent as we have seen from various of our customers. What is important to consider is that the online solution where the end user submits his files needs to be easy to understand and follow logical steps which make it simple to send work to the printer. Some web-to-print solutions look more like an extension of a printer driver with no real preview of what the job will look like once it is completed. Océ offers online portals which are easy to navigate, deliver accurate costing and previews of the jobs submitted and always lead to the desired outcome therefore eliminating mistakes and the need for costly reprints.”

Web to print does require thought, and won’t instantly result in a boom to your business, but for digital printing in particular it offers the best way to optimise your profits, maximise your efficiencies, and minimise costly errors.

Digital printers themselves are now coming in an ever-broadening range, with the Vendor Focus features on the following pages highlighting most of the leading players. Print quality continues to rise, whether it is at offset quality is a moot point, but the key factor is whether it is at a quality that the market will wear, and on this point there is no doubt that digital delivers, as anyone who visited PrintEx a couple of months ago will have seen.

The JDF connection

Posted in Features on August 09, 2011

Barry Hunt reports on a Dutch printer's experience with a JDF workflow linking MIS and pre-press systems

It is generally accepted that digital printing works best within a dedicated workflow. Today, that means not just an automated pre-press system to optimize the studio workflow, but also using a customized management information system to handle the many administration and production tasks. Best of all is to integrate these disparate functions within a JDF-enabled (Job Definition Format) digital workflow. This method of increasing productivity is a more recent development. In fact W&R Etiketten of Tilburg in the Netherlands is one of the first label converters to adopt this end-to-end approach.

The company was formed in 1992 by Jack Willemsz and his business partner Leo van Rooy. It has 40 employees and occupies a plant with 4,500 sqm of floor space. It uses the recently-introduced Xeikon 3300 label press (330mm maximum web width), printing with the latest QA-I dry toner system. It runs with a rewinder from Grafisk Maskinfabrik.

Digital printing is just one process in a production set-up that includes four MPS EP-Series UV flexo presses (a seven-color, three-color, five-color and a six-color). They are supported by a new Matho matrix waste removal system, while Athena, a local trade house supplies digitally-made flexo plates. The company also produces large volumes of blank stock-size self-adhesive labels using six LeoMat slitter/rewinders with die cutters.

Most of the firm's thousand or so clients are from Holland. They vary greatly in size, operating mainly in the transport, logistics, food and retail sectors. No more than 25 of the larger customers account for roughly 50 percent of turnover, which last year was 6.4 million euros ($US9.36 million).

From the outset, continual investment and development has shaped the company's growth. Following industry trends, the demand for short-run jobs has increased, but with fewer labels per job and shorter lead times. The firm also experienced increased pressure at the high end of the market, compounded with an economic downturn and decreasing prices. Faced with this negative spiral, the company recognized that it had to face the challenge of adapting and developing the business to ensure its future, which implied differentiating itself from competitors.

The digital choice

To answer the shorter-run scenario, W&R Etiketten decided to introduce some form of digital color printing. But not before waiting to see where this technology was heading. 'It was only when Xeikon re-entered the label market and offered a serious alternative to existing systems that we saw real possibilities to re-invent our business. The 3300 is a new model and offers us the right quality at a constant speed. The overall investment was a lot more attractive than other systems. We don't like the idea of click charging. Plus it is a “green machine” because it uses more environmentally-friendly toners for printing on ordinary labelstocks,' says Willemsz.

He adds that the account managers still required the same amount of time to manage each order, so the choice was between hiring more of them, or automating and standardizing the work processes as much as possible to handle the increasing number of jobs. Cerm, which had earlier installed the firm's management information system, worked with EskoArtwork to jointly develop an automated pre-press workflow. It incorporated an intelligent JDF connection suited to label production. EskoArtwork also supplied the RIP that drives the Xeikon 3300.

All job specifications, finishing requirements and delivery data are entered into the Cerm system, which eliminates the need for double entries and minimizes the risk of errors. The database provides all the necessary information for the EskoArtwork Automation Engine workflow, including color management for all jobs. The MIS passes job information to the Xeikon X-800 digital front-end through a JDF connection. This allows the X-800 to select the correct PDF job file from the central server and process it according to the settings specified by the MIS. During production, Xeikon sends real-time status information back to the MIS with a JDF/JMF connection to track jobs and monitor the uptime of the digital press.

At present some 50 percent of the company's sales are digital. With annual sales volumes increasing by around 10 percent, the company finds that some 20-30 percent of sales involve digital printing. Later this year the second phase of JDF workflow integration comes into effect for all production stages. Cerm's Web4Labels will allow customers to submit orders via the internet, upload data and track job status. The Cerm MIS and EskoArtwork Automation Engine will jointly plan and control the job information to, and retrieve data from, the UV flexo presses using shop floor data collection modules. The system also allows for scanning of bar coded labels on material reels for stock control purposes. The goal is to speed-up order intake and job preparation, make planning and production more efficient, and significantly reduce the risk for errors. Tracking every aspect of a job's lifecycle will result in highly accurate invoicing and cost analysis.

Further into the future, Willemsz forecasts that W&R Etiketten will become a larger and more professional company: 'We will have two Xeikon digital presses running side by side, while we expect our conventional flexo presses to become even more efficient. In addition, the internet will become a major sales channel for us, and clients will be increasingly involved in managing jobs themselves. Ultimately we will make a big difference to our customers, thanks to our partners’ unique end-to-end solution.'

GEON thinking digital

Monday, 05 September 2011

High demand: Guy Phillips, general manager of GEON’s South Island New Zealand operation with the Xeikon 3300
High demand: Guy Phillips, general manager of GEON’s South Island New Zealand operation with the Xeikon 3300Advertisement

Xeikon printing - digital Geon group

Last year GEON picked up the pace of its digital investment with the installation of a Xeikon 3300 digital label press in response to clients’ demand for quicker lead-times and shorter runs. Today, GEON is reaping the rewards

GEON’s Xeikon 3300 has been in full production since its installation at its specialised labels operation in Heathcote, Christchurch during April 2010. The press has since enabled the company to react to clients’ demands for more efficiency resulting in growth for both the clients, and for GEON’s label business.

Guy Phillips, general manager of GEON’s south island New Zealand operation says in today’s packaging label market, there is a high demand for product sampling and the Xeikon has given GEON a platform to produce digital labels on par with its flexo machines.

He says, “It has also given GEON Christchurch opportunities to look at more innovative label designs for the end user. As part of GEON’s ongoing environmental improvements, the Xeikon was also seen as a great fit with our ISO14001 accreditation.”

GEON has picked up numerous print awards past at various events in the past 18 months including 14 medals at this year’s National Print Awards – the highest number of medals of any company nominated across the 33 categories – and it won the New Zealand Pride in Print supreme award for the second year running.

As well as the supreme award, GEON also took out gold in the labels category for a Genoese food label, printed on the Xeikon 3300, only months after GEON’s Christchurch facility was damaged in an earthquake. Commenting on the win, Roger Kirwan, general manager of GEON’s label division says, “The label category is an extremely competitive section, it includes sheetfed, reelfed, wine labels and multi process, printed using any process.

“Our decision to go digital and invest in a Xeikon was the smartest decision we’ve made for a long time. When we first installed the press we were particularly impressed how fast we were up and running, and producing our first digital labels.”

GEON’s labels division has been in business for more than 30 years, offering expert label concept design and preproduction, as well as finished label solutions. The operation provides numerous services to the packaging market and has developed a number of innovations for pressure sensitive label solutions.

Meanwhile, Phillips says the installation of the 3300 coupled with the win at the Pride In Print Awards has changed the way the GEON team looks at the jobs that come in. He says, “We now challenge the designs and push the boundaries for process print. We are now working even closer with our clients’ designers as they also see the benefits this machine can offer in addition to our existing print platforms.”

Phillips insists that digital technology will play a big part of GEON’s future plans on the label market, adding that as customer demand for short run increases and turnaround times shrink, a printer cannot expect to remain competitive in the market without investment in digital.

He says, “GEON had been asked by our clients when we would be offering a digital platform and we had purposely waited until there was a machine available that we believed ticked all the right boxes.

“Digital machines are always going to be a part of the labels industry and installations worldwide are still on the increase. With ever changing technologies, we will see the speeds of these machines increase and the tipping point of printing on main stream presses and digital becoming smaller and smaller.”

Two earthquakes have hit Christchurch since GEON installed the Xeikon 3300, however not only did the facility and the new press escaped major damage, but Phillips says it has made GEON’s label business event stronger.

He says, “We already had a great team, but since the earthquake the dynamics have changed. Everyone now wants to do more for our clients to ensure that they exceed their expectations.

“Natural disasters have happened on both sides of the ditch over the last year and at all times the main focus was the safety of our people. Once we knew everyone was safe, it was just a matter of rolling up our sleeves and cleaning the place up.”

He says, “The amount of time and extra effort that was put in by all staff to get our plant back in operation, especially with their own personal lives to sort out, was a very humbling process to be a part of.”

'Uitstekende resultaten Punch Graphix' AMSTERDAM (AFN) -

Ring, president of Xeikon America Inc. “At Pack Expo, brand owners, along with packaging and label converters, will see the exceptional results possible with the Xeikon technology.”

Equipped with high-precision LED-based imaging heads, the Xeikon 3000 Series features true 1200 dpi resolution and 1200 x 3600 dpi imaging addressability with variable dot density, generating excellent image quality. The Xeikon 3000 Series presses come equipped with five (5) color stations: four (4) for the standard process colors and the fifth for the use of spot colors for gamut expansion and brand color matching. The fifth station can also be used for applying a special security toner for anti-counterfeiting applications, and a 'one-pass' opaque white toner to create the much desired 'no-label or label-less look' on transparent films.

The Xeikon 3000 Series also takes advantage of Xeikon's X-800 Digital Front End. Based on open standards, the X-800 can be integrated into any production environment. Its modular set-up allows label printers to manage different production elements in the most efficient manner. Prepress functions, such as impositions and color management, can be performed in the prepress environment, allowing the press operator to focus on production. The X-800 also allows easy inclusion of metadata functionalities, such as sequential numbers and/or barcodes.

Xeikon appoints new industrial sales manager

Posted in Latest News on September 19, 2011

Xeikon has appointed Patrice Lecomte as industrial sales manager. He will be responsible for generating new business opportunities and promoting Xeikon’s label presses in France.

He has 20 years experience in the label industry and was previously sales manager France for Gallus, where he sold a variety of presses, including narrow web letter, narrow web flexo, and narrow web offset.

Hans Gerinckx, sales director industrial printing, commented on Lecomte’s appointment: ‘Patrice is a very welcome addition to the French sales team. Our customers and prospects will benefit from his expertise, which he has accrued over 20 years working in the label market. He has an excellent understanding of the challenges shaping the label industry in France – and has the knowledge and experience to help printers overcome them.'

Patrice Lecomte commented: ‘The label industry is evolving rapidly, and digital has a major part to play in its future, particularly in the French market’. He added: ‘Digital is improving all the time. And with customers increasingly using variable data and requiring short-runs, more and more label printers are choosing this versatile technology over traditional production methods to increase their profitability.’
