New York cabs get mobile apps to compete with Uber
By Danny King / September 24, 2015

The two largest vendors of payment-processing systems for New York City taxicabs have introduced ride-hailing mobile apps, which might be used to help the cab industry compete against Uber.

Verifone debuted its Way2ride app in New York in July, and plans to expand to Philadelphia, Las Vegas, Boston, Miami and Washington, D.C., next month. The app has been downloaded about 200,000 times by prospective New York cab customers, according to Jason Gross, Verifone’s vice president of strategy and innovation.

Creative Mobile Technologies, though a partnership with app-maker Arro, debuted the Arro app in New York earlier this month. It has plans to introduce the app in San Francisco and Washington, D.C. The app has been downloaded about 12,000 times, according to Arro spokesman Michael Woloz.

The apps are notable because the two companies control New York’s taxicab payment-processing market, and because that city has been the site of a particularly contentious battle between the cab industry and Uber, which started operating in New York in 2011.

New York City officials threatened to enforce a limit on Uber drivers in the city because of falling prices of taxi medallions and allegations from taxi lobbyists that Uber drivers don’t face the same regulations mandated for taxi drivers. The city in July agreed to hold off on enforcing that limit in exchange for Uber’s agreement to supply data for a city study on how peer-to-peer ride-hailing services have impacted New York’s cab industry.

Creative Mobile Technologies and Verifone split market share of the city’s 14,000 yellow cabs within Manhattan about evenly. Verifone controls about 80% of the outer boroughs’ green cabs, with CMT controlling the other 20%. While both Gross and Woloz acknowledged the rapid growth of the peer-to-peer ride-hailing industry, both said taxicabs continue to have the majority of ride-hailing market share and both touted taxis’ fare transparency, safety regulations and the lack of surge pricing that is used by Uber when demand spikes.

And with such market share, the new apps and the rising threat from Uber, the two companies will likely collaborate in order to ensure that Way2ride users can hail cabs with Creative Mobile Technologies systems and vice versa, according to Woloz.

“We expect both systems to be compatible with one another, thus creating total market share for yellows and greens, by the end of the year,” Woloz said.
Gross wouldn’t confirm that Verifone would collaborate with CMT, though he did say the company was “talking with a number of different companies that provide applications.”

“Passengers want to be able to get a ride with their phone, and taxis are still the predominant form of transportation in a city like New York,” Gross said.

(homepage IEX)

Creative Mobile bereikt dus ongeveer 30.000 taxi's. En in tegenstelling tot UBER is het dus "for the industry, by the industry".

---

NEW YORK, Oct. 23, 2014 – Creative Mobile Technologies, LLC (CMT), the leading taxi technology provider in the United States, has announced the compatibility of its in-vehicle payment platforms with Apple’s Apple Pay Near Field Communications (NFC) wireless payment technology.

Based upon the same NFC infrastructure popularized by Visa® payWave, and Mastercard® PayPass, Apple Pay allows passengers with credit cards registered with Apple Pay on their iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus devices to pay for goods and services by simply tapping their iPhone to compatible Point of Sale payment terminals.

Leveraging the existing contact-less payment devices that CMT has already deployed into more than 35,000 vehicles across the United States, Passengers can now conveniently pay for their ride at the end of the trip with Apple Pay, avoiding the hassle of fumbling with wallets and credit cards as they move across the City. Transactions benefit from the same PCI Level 1 security standards that CMT has certified to, along with the advanced security features inherent to Apple Pay. Supported markets include New York, Chicago, Boston, San Francisco, and more than 70 cities in which CMT is active.

Kevin French, Managing Director for CMT commented on the announcement, “The payment industry is experiencing unprecedented innovation around the world, and we are proud to be at the forefront of this change.” Mr. French continued, “CMT’s payment solutions allow our clients to offer their passengers the greatest flexibility when it comes to paying for their rides, including conventional credit cards, Chip & Pin cards, NFC payment, as well as Card-on-File payment through our growing suite of passenger Apps. Our continuing objective is to deliver the most affordable, fully integrated payment ecosystem for mobile transaction payments available to the For-Hire transportation industry.”

This announcement arrives on the heels of last week’s news release that Creative Mobile Technologies and Mobile Knowledge have joined forces to form the world’s largest taxi and forhire- vehicle technology company.

About Creative Mobile Technologies, LLC (CMT) and Mobile Knowledge: Founded in New York City in 2005 by taxi industry leaders, Creative Mobile Technologies, LLC (CMT) provides more than 30,000 taxicabs in over 70 cities and 35 states with a variety of taxi technologies and enhancements including credit and debit card processing, media and advertising content, accessibility innovations, text messaging, interactive passenger maps, GPS, electronic trip sheets and back-office fleet management systems. Justin, wat denk jij: zouden ze met deze nieuwe club nog wat kunnen benutten van hun vroegere Taxi-APP?
