The Navigation System
I've found that the navigation system built into the Model S works very well. The combination of the touch screen and the dashboard provides a better overall experience than most navigation systems I've used. Here is how it works.

Starting Navigation

To start navigating you can either use a voice command like "Navigate to ..." or search for something using the search box and onscreen keyboard. Since it uses Google maps, you can search anything google supports.

2013 en er is geen reet van terecht gekomen!
Je copy paste wordt steeds slechter.

Audi gaat never nooit data uitwisselen met Google.

Top 10 Autonomous Car Facts: When Will Self-Driving Cars Arrive, What's Holding Them Up?

.....
4. Hyper-Accurate Mapping: Accurate vehicle positioning technology is another critical component of autonomous driving. We’re not talking accuracy within 10 or 20 feet, like most current navigation systems. We’re talking 10 or 20 centimeters, meaning the car knows precisely where it is in relation to other cars, lane markers, pedestrians, etc. This is a critical part of ensuring safety for autonomous vehicles. When mapping technology becomes hyper-accurate the car will know when its human driver should take control, and will alert the driver at least 10 seconds before entering regions that require human attention. Last December Audi AG, BMW Group and Daimler AG completed the joint acquisition of Nokia’s digital mapping and location technology as a key step in achieving hyper-accurate mapping. A Google rep confirmed it is also utilizing mapping and GPS technology that is accurate to within 10 centimeters.

5. Open Mapping Platform: Establishing and maintaining this level of hyper-accurate mapping will be difficult, but if an open/standard platform for mapping is established across all automakers the process will happen much quicker and be far easier to maintain. The recent agreements between General Motors GM +0.92%, Volkswagen AG and Mobileye, a company that specializes in optical sensors for real-time imaging and mapping, is an example of the kind of technology needed to create and update this mapping data. Audi’s engineers feel without universal mapping data throughout the industry it will be difficult to move beyond level 3 autonomous control.

6. Cloud-Based Communication: It may occur to you that utilizing an open platform to capture hyper-accurate mapping information from every vehicle on the road, in real time, could result in a fair bit of data transmission. Or maybe more than a fair bit. Maybe even an incredibly massive amount of data on a scale we haven’t seen before. Audi’s engineers told us the level of data coming back from all these vehicles will indeed be large, but not insurmountable. The latest Audi Q7 is already using Audi connect to send back real-time data for analysis. However, the only realistic long-term solution will involve cloud-based communication to capture, store and manage the incoming and outgoing data created by a growing fleet of autonomous vehicles.

2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class first drive review
Driving the smartest car on sale
March 10 2016
David McCowen

Time to go to work. Step outside, take out your phone and unlock the car with a swipe of the handset.

Standing in the driveway, another tap or two asks the car to back out of the garage and it slides smoothly out of the shed, coming to a stop in front of you.

Slip behind the wheel, plug the phone into its connection point and close the centre console. You won't need to touch the phone again - its key features are writ large on one of two oversized screens mounted within a silver-rimmed, gloss-black, snowboard-shaped panel stretching two thirds of the way across the dashboard.

Guide the car onto the street and cruise through the suburbs until you reach The Road. Most people have one in their commute. It could be the Pacific Highway, Punt Road, Parramatta Road, the Hume or something else flowing freely as marmalade, a twice-daily source of aggravation for millions of people each day. But not you.

The stilted chore of driving in heavy traffic becomes the car's responsibility as you double-tap the cruise control lever to pop it into a piloted mode that maintains a safe distance to the car in front while tracking along neatly in its lane.

You can keep a hand on the wheel to gently guide the car or tap its touch pads, cruise control stalk or steering wheel every minute or so to let it know the lights are on and someone's home.

The car maintains its vigil as the traffic opens up, watching intersections for trouble, scanning the road ahead and behind for potential hazards, ready to take action as speeds increase. Pop the indicator on and it changes lanes automatically, checking for sufficient space before blending into the next channel of road.

Cameras in the car scan for road signs, sticking to posted speed limits - even portable road works that aren't marked on GPS maps. Cloud-based data helps it see around corners, warning its driver - and others - of potential hazards that may be out of sight.

Powerful headlights feature 84 LEDs on each side that essentially divide its beam into pixels switching on to illuminate different areas of the road, and off to prevent other drivers from being dazzled. Capable of tracking and masking out four objects on the road at a time, the lights automatically adapt to a driver's environment to minimise eye strain.

Low-tech solutions include double-thickness windows that keep road noise to a minimum, emphasising the clarity of an outstanding 23-speaker surround sound system as superb seats offer up a hot stone massage to keep you relaxed and comfortable on the road.

If it sounds like something from future, that's right. The new Mercedes-Benz E-Class doesn't arrive locally until June.

Street smarts

Mercedes claims this is the most intelligent car on the road, with plenty of clever solutions to keep it ahead of the competition.

It might be right. It has more sophisticated sensors than the Autopilot system in Tesla's Model S, and it feels more accomplished than any production driver assistance system I've sampled - including those released by Audi, BMW and Volvo in recent months.

The E-Class won a key PR battle against rival brands in January by becoming the first car in the US to take part in autonomous driving trials without any hardware modifications - engineers simply disabled a requirement for drivers to touch the steering wheel every now and then, and gave the car permission to use more radical steering inputs than the production version.

That's an important point to note.

While the E-Class uses significantly more steering angle than other Mercedes systems fitted to cars such as the new SL-class, it is more suited to highways and arterial roads than tighter routes. Freeway exit ramps required a touch of human intervention, and there were a couple of times that we had to take over to stop the car from doing the wrong thing - driving out of its lane or accelerating at the wrong time. It also doesn't deal with red lights, stop signs or pedestrian crossings - something drivers need to manage. Yes, it has pedestrian detection and emergency self-braking systems, but you may still need to call an ambulance if relying on that regularly, if for nothing else than to order defibrillators for pedestrians scared to death by the car's panic-inducing last-moment braking technique.

Mercedes-Benz says E-Class owners will benefit from future software updates to the car. It hasn't said what form they will take, but it is possible - and we're going out on a limb here - that they could add further technical ability while removing internal limitations on the car's self-driving abilities. Mercedes-Benz research and development chief Thomas Weber says his team worked hard to put the best possible hardware into the car so that it will not be superseded quickly.

Can Mayer keep her seat at the table? Marissa Mayer told Charlie Rose that she hopes to stay at Yahoo, even if the company changes hands. “I certainly hope the strategic alternative has a place for me,” she told Rose. “But that said, we’ll obviously honor our commitments to our shareholders.” She's also bracing for battle: activist shareholder Starboard Value is gearing up for a proxy fight, and Mayer just added two new directors to its board. They both have experience selling companies. "The new directors, added without any involvement from Starboard, may indicate Yahoo intends to fend off any outside attempt to seize the board," explains the WSJ.

Column: The driverless era is on its way
BY RANDAL O'TOOLE 3 hrs ago

One of history's greatest inventions, the mass-produced automobile brought mobility to the masses, provided access to better housing and low-cost consumer goods, and enabled both the civil rights and women's rights movements.

We're solving problems with pollution and auto safety without reducing that mobility: Since 1970 we've seen a 180 percent growth in driving, yet total highway air pollution is down 85 percent while fatality rates per billion miles of driving have declined by 78 percent.

We are on the threshold of another mobility revolution that will make cars more common than ever: the self-driving car. Among other things, self-driving cars will change where we live and almost completely replace public transit systems.

In 2013, America's transit systems spent more than $60 billion carrying fewer than 59 billion passenger miles, for an average cost of $1.03 per passenger mile. By comparison, Barclays estimates that shared, self-driving cars will cost only 29 cents per mile. Since cars are also faster and more convenient than transit, transit will disappear except in places that are simply too dense to be served by automobiles, which in the United States mainly means New York City.

Self-driving cars will change the way we think about distance. If people can work, watch movies or play video games with their children on their morning commutes, they will be willing to live much further from work than they do today. This means urban areas will become even more spread out than they are now.

No one can predict for certain all the changes self-driving cars will bring about. But we know self-driving cars use the same basic infrastructure as human-driven cars, so states and cities need to fill potholes and maintain bridges. We have a pretty good idea that public transit will at least shrink, so transit agencies should focus on low-cost, flexible bus service, not build expensive and pointless rail lines.

The Obama administration wants to spend several billion dollars on pilot "smart-road" projects, that is, electronic infrastructure that can help guide self-driving cars. This is a foolish plan as whatever is installed will be obsolete long before the government can build it into all of the nation's 4 million miles of roads.

Google, Ford, Volkswagen, Volvo and most other companies designing self-driving cars don't believe such infrastructure is needed. Instead of relying on smart roads, their cars are completely self-contained, using precise maps showing the exact location of every highway stripe and street sign. A company called HERE has already precisely mapped about two-thirds of the nation's paved roads and streets, updating the maps every day.

Several manufacturers have promised to have self-driving cars for sale by 2020. Once the basic software is available, it may be possible to upgrade many recent cars to be self-drivable for $1,000 or less, which means self-driving cars will dominate the roads sooner than most people think.

When self-driving cars take the road, will you own your car or car-share? Will you live in an urban condo or on an exurban hobby farm? Will you shop and work online while your self-driving car takes you to Florida? No one knows the answers to these questions, so the best that states and cities can do is to keep options open and not commit themselves to expensive technologies, whether rail transit or smart roads, that are likely to soon be obsolete.
