May 4 (Bloomberg) -- Intel Corp., the world’s largest semiconductor maker, unveiled a processor made with a “3-D” manufacturing technique that increases chip performance as much as 37 percent while using less power.

The new Ivy Bridge processor will be in production by the end of this year, Santa Clara, California-based Intel said today in a statement. The chip is the first to rely on 3-D tri-gate transistors, an approach almost 10 years in the making that squeezes 22-nanometer circuits onto a piece of silicon.

“This breakthrough will extend Intel’s lead even further over the rest of the semiconductor industry,” Intel Senior Fellow Mark Bohr said in the statement. “The low-voltage and low-power benefits far exceed what we typically see from one process generation to the next.”

While mainly designed for personal computers, the new technology could help Intel get its processors into phones and other battery-powered devices because it uses less power. Though eight out of every 10 PCs sold are based on Intel processors, there are no phones on sale that feature its designs. The new chips could draw half the power of current models when processing at the same speed, saving battery life.

The more transistors on a chip, the more information it can handle. Packing transistors closer together makes processors more powerful, cheaper or more power-efficient, depending on the designer’s priorities.

Vertical Thinking

Until now, horizontally shrinking the line widths of transistor circuits -- and the wires that link them together -- has been the way to increase their density. The 3-D approach adds a vertical element, helping fit more of them on the chip and improving their responsiveness, Intel said. The new lines are 22 nanometers, compared with 32 nanometers with the previous generation of chips. A nanometer is a billionth of a meter.

The new technology would put Intel a generation ahead of rivals. Its main competitor in computer processors, Advanced Micro Devices Inc., is rolling out its first 32-nanometer processors this quarter.

Intel rose 45 cents to $23.50 at 4 p.m. New York time on the Nasdaq Stock Market. The shares have gained 12 percent this year.

Nieuwe chip Intel voor tablet en smartphone
Gepubliceerd: vandaag 20:53

Applied Materials’ Varian Purchase May Spur Equipment Deals

By Ian King
May 5 (Bloomberg) -- Applied Materials Inc.’s $4.9 billion
purchase of Varian Semiconductor Equipment Associates Inc. may
trigger a round of acquisitions in the chip-machinery industry,
making companies such as Novellus Systems Inc. possible targets.
Applied Materials, the world’s biggest maker of equipment
that creates semiconductors, said yesterday it’s paying a 55
percent premium for Varian, to help regain ground in a business
where it had lost market share. Executives across the chipmaking
industry may follow with their own deals to add revenue and
lessen price pressure while taking advantage of low borrowing
costs, said Patrick Ho, an analyst at Stifel Nicolaus.
“I expect other companies to leverage and use their
balance sheets as well,” said Ho, who is based in Dallas. “In
the equipment space, you need consolidation to remove a lot of
the excess pricing pressure that you typically get when there
are a lot of companies participating in the same space.”
ASML Holding NV and Lam Research Corp., which also build
chipmaking machinery, may look for candidates among a list that
includes Novellus, Cymer Inc. and KLA-Tencor Corp., said C.J.
Muse, an analyst at Barclays Capital in New York. Applied
Materials is also probably not finished buying, he said.
KLA-Tencor itself may become acquisitive, according to Ho.
The Applied acquisition of Varian also has revived speculation
that Lam and Novellus might combine.
Supercomputers to Mobile Phones
Novellus jumped 7.6 percent, or $2.50, to $35.42 today,
rounding out its best two-day performance since 2002, after a
6.5 percent gain yesterday. The premium Applied Materials paid
for Varian, whose stock rallied 51 percent yesterday, indicates
that chip-equipment makers may be more highly valuing their
peers than the stock market does, said Edwin Mok, a Needham &
Co. analyst.
In 37 industry acquisitions, the median multiple paid --
based on earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and
amortization -- was 11.8 times. Applied Materials agreed to pay
13.4 times Ebitda based on analysts’ estimates for Varian’s
earnings in the current year, according to Bloomberg data.
Applied, based in Santa Clara, California, is the world’s
largest maker of machines that turn discs of silicon into the
electronic components that are the heart of devices ranging from
supercomputers to mobile phones.
While Applied has machines for many phases of the
multistage process of creating chips, most companies specialize
in one area. Varian has expertise in ion-implantation machinery,
a technology needed across all types of chips, and increasingly
used in solar panels and light-emitting diodes, or LEDs. The
company’s sales more than doubled last year.
KLA-Tencor machines check that parts of the process have
been completed. Novellus equipment processes wafers in the early
parts of a procedure that can take three months to complete.
‘Pretty Cheap’
“The group is pretty cheap compared to what Applied is
willing to pay,” said Mok, who is based in San Francisco.
“Applied has historically been pretty stringent about how much
they offer in these deals. It highlights the fact that people in
the industry have a way of valuing these companies that’s
different to what the Street is seeing.”
Tokyo Electron Ltd., Japan’s largest producer of
semiconductor equipment, may follow Applied in trying to buy
back lost market share through acquisitions, Mok said.
Novellus’s gains are partly based on speculation that the
Japanese company may look at it, he said.
Representatives from KLA-Tencor, ASML, Novellus, Lam
Research and Cymer didn’t respond to calls and messages seeking
comment.
Rise in Acquisitions
Companies worldwide have proposed $833 billion of mergers
and acquisitions so far in 2011, on pace for $2.45 trillion this
year. That would be a 10 percent increase over the $2.23
trillion of deals in 2010. Companies struck $678 billion of
transactions during the same period last year.
The Varian acquisition would be the biggest in the
semiconductor-equipment market in the past five years, according
to Bloomberg data. Applied Materials is the industry’s most
acquisitive company, with 13 announced deals in that period. In
2009, it agreed to purchase Semitool Inc. for about $364
million, helping it upgrade technology used in the preparation
of silicon wafers.
Stockpiles of cash and the ability to raise debt may prompt
companies in the industry to seek more purchases, said Weston
Twigg, a Pacific Crest Securities analyst. A slump in earnings
from 2007 to 2009 forced many companies to fire staff and cut
underperforming businesses, making them more attractive now that
demand has returned, he said.
Rudolph, Nanometrics
In addition, the shrinking number of customers prepared to
commit as much as $5 billion to build a chip plant, as well as
Applied’s growing reach, may prompt other equipment makers to
get together, Twigg said. Rudolph Technologies Inc. and
Nanometrics Inc. are two companies that would do well if
purchased and given the scale of a larger organization,
according to Twigg.
Virginia Becker, a spokeswoman for Rudolph, said she had no
immediate comment, and David Viera, a Nanometrics spokesman,
declined to comment.
“They are both pretty good companies and bring a lot of
value,” Twigg said. “They are small and would benefit from an
acquisition.”

Applied Materials Q2 Beats; Solar Sales Strong; Q3 Outlook Misses
May. 24 2011 - 6:35 pm | 331 views | 0 recommendations | 0 comments
By ERIC SAVITZ
Applied Materials shares are trading modestly lower in late trading following the company’s financial report for the fiscal second quarter ended May 1.

For the quarter, the company posted sales of $2.86 billion and non-GAAP profits of 38 cents a share, ahead of the Street at $2.77 billion and 37 cents. Orders for the quarter totaled $3.19 billion, up from $2.97 billion in Q1, and $2.53 billion a year ago. Sales were up from $2.69 billion in Q1 and $2.30 billion a year ago.

“We had a very strong quarter,” CEO Mike Splinter said in an interview with Forbes this afternoon. “The first half was an all-time record for the company.”

For Q3, the company sees revenue down 3% to 10% sequentially, which implies $2.57 billion to $2.77 billion, below the Street at $2.82 billion. Applied expects non-GAAP profiots of 31-37 cents for the quarter, below the Street at 39 cents. The outlook appears is pressuring AMAT shares in late trading.

Nonetheless, Splinter says the company is sticking to its full year forecast for $11 billion in revenue and profits of $1.50; the Street consensus – surprise! – has been for $1.50. Splinter says the company still sees industry spending on wafer fab equipment in 2011 at $31 billion to $34 billion.

The biggest reason for the strong Q2, Splinter says, was a big spike in sales in the company’s solar equipment business. The company’s Energy and Environmental Solutions segment, which includes the solar operations, posted sales of $637 million, up from $476 million in Q1, and $166 million a year ago. The company had sales in the core Silicon Systems group of $1.453 billion, off a bit from $1.496 billion in Q1, but up a bit from $1.404 billion a year ago.

The primary reason the company sees slower Q3 revenues, Splinter says, is that the solar business will likely be down 15%-25% from what he says was an unsustainable level in the second quarter.

Splinter says the spike in demand for solar equipment comes almost entirely from China – the country accounts for almost 80% of the company’s sales in the sector. He says companies are building capacity to meet peak quarter demand. He says the solar companies want to build capacity in front of changes in feed-in tariffs, since there tends to be a surge of solar installation demand ahead of subsidy changes. The surge in demand, he adds, suggests a bullish view from the industry on the outlook for 2012, which is when equipment ordered today is likely to go into service.

Splinter notes that Applied had said coming into the year that Q1 and Q4 would be the strongest periods, and he says they still think that. But he says demand in Q2 and Q3 has moderated a little more than they expected. He notes that PC sales were off in the calendar first quarter more than the company had expected, while tablet sales were also down quarter-over-quarter after a very strong Q4. On tablets, he notes that there were some supply issues with “the leading tablet,” which of course is the Apple iPad, while “new entrants in the market have not taken off as fast as we had thought.”

On the recent earthquake and tsunami in Japan, he says Applied sees no impact on its own supply chain. For Applied’s customers, he says, there should be a good view in the next 30-45 days as to whether there are going to be any resulting shortages. He notes that Japanese component companies “are working very hard to get factories back on line.”

As for the company’s flat-panel display equipment business, he says Applied is seeing a kind of Tale of Two Cities. “It’s the best of times and the worst of times,” he says. In the TV business, Splinter explains, very little capacity is being added. He says a number of customers who had plans to build TV display factories in China are pushing out their plans. On the other hand, he says that there is strong demand for gear to make high-res panels for tablets and smart phones. He says the company now sees $300 million in revenue from that area for this year that they had not expected 9 months ago.

Semiconductor Year-over-Year Sales Growth Encouraging PR Newswire (Press Release) 19:36

WASHINGTON, May 31, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA), representing U.S. leadership in semiconductor manufacturing and design, today announced that worldwide sales of semiconductors were $24.7 billion for the month of April 2011, a 2.2 percent decline from the prior month when sales were $25.2 billion, and an increase of 3.9 percent from April 2010 when sales were $23.7 billion. All monthly sales numbers represent a three-month moving average.
"Although month-over-month sales saw a slight decline, we remain optimistic given that the industry has increased sales compared to the same month last year," said Brian Toohey, president, Semiconductor Industry Association. "We expect moderate growth to continue through the remainder of the year."
The month-over-month results are slightly below seasonal patterns in part due to the natural disaster in Japan. The industry continues to mitigate the impact through successful supply chain recovery efforts and should see significant improvement reflected in the second half of 2011. Semiconductor industry, year-to-date growth continues to trend higher than the national GDP and in 2010 hit a record-breaking $298 billion in worldwide annual revenue.
Overall, higher fuel and food costs have led to a decrease in consumers' discretionary funds. This trend could be a factor in the overall softening of growth across all U.S.-based manufacturing industries. The SIA will release an updated Semiconductor Growth Forecast for 2011-2014 from the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS) organization in early June.

--Lenovo to launch two 10-inch Android tablets this summer, one for consumers and one for business customers
--Lenovo plans to release a 10-inch Windows-based tablet later this year
--Lenovo likely won't have a smartphone in the U.S. market for at least 12 to 18 months
--Lenovo sees tablets replacing netbooks and making up about 15% of the PC market, still expects PC market to grow as prices come down
By Shara Tibken
Of DOW JONES NEWSWIRES
NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- Lenovo Group Ltd. (LNVGY, 0992.HK) is gearing up for the release of two Google Inc. (GOOG) Android tablets in the U.S. this summer and a Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) Windows tablet later this year, the company's president said Monday, as the PC maker expands beyond its key market of China.
The Chinese computer maker, one of the world's fastest-growing PC makers last year, became a global PC player after buying that business from International Business Machines Corp. (IBM) in 2005. Lenovo since has expanded into smartphones with the LePhone--which means "Happy Phone" in Chinese--and its LePad touchscreen tablet, both of which are sold in China and use the Android operating system.
President and Chief Operating Officer Rory Read said in an interview with Dow Jones Newswires that Lenovo plans a world-wide release of a tablet for consumers early in the summer, likely July, followed by a tablet for enterprises later in the summer, likely August.
Both tablets will be 10 inches and will run the Honeycomb version of Android, Read said. They will be priced for the "mainstream" market, likely running $450 to $900 depending on their configuration, he said.
The consumer version will be dubbed "IdeaPad," while the business version--which will include a stylus for signature capture--will be branded for the ThinkPad line acquired from IBM, he said.
In addition, Lenovo will release a 10-inch Windows tablet later this year, even before Windows 8 is released, as "there was interest around that," Read said. Lenovo also will launch seven-inch tablets for certain uses "later in the cycle."
"We've really been working to tailor the experience" of our tablets, Read said. "Some of the early-generation Android devices were a little ahead of their time, and what we're doing here is making sure [our tablets] are strong. We only have one opportunity to make that first good impression."
Lenovo has been one of the fastest-growing PC makers of late, growing 27% last year, according to data tracker International Data Corp. In 2010, it had about 10% of the global PC market by unit shipments, the research firm said, placing it fourth behind Hewlett-Packard Co. (HPQ), Dell Inc. (DELL) and Acer Inc. (ACEIY, ASIYF, 2353.TW).
The company has been benefiting from a wave of enterprise computer-hardware replacements, as well as its business in China and other emerging markets. In May it reported its fiscal fourth-quarter profit more than tripled from the previous year. It lately has been seeking to offer more mobile products like smartphones and tablet computers to boost margins.
Read said Lenovo likely won't have a smartphone in the U.S. market for at least 12 to 18 months, seeking first to gain scale in China and then spreading to other emerging markets.
"From the standpoint of smartphones, that's a very crowded space," he said.
He added the company needs to sell millions of smartphone units a year to reach the scale necessary for expansion. Read noted LePhone sales are ahead of Lenovo's original plans but he didn't provide specific details.
Meanwhile, Read expects tablets to make up about 15% of the computer market in the next three years or so, taking the place of netbooks.
"Netbooks are pretty much over," he said.
But Read said the overall PC market should continue growing as lower prices allow customers in emerging markets to afford the devices.
"The PC business is going to continue to expand and continue to grow, and especially in emerging markets it could grow very rapidly," he said. "In the client space...they're going to continue to expand significantly over the next decade. There's no doubt about it."

BEIJING (MarketWatch) -- Chip-equipment manufacturer Applied Materials Inc. /quotes/zigman/19895/quotes/nls/amat AMAT -0.15% will establish its first equipment-manufacturing base in China, Xinhua News Agency reported Monday, citing regional government officials.

The plant, due to start construction at the end of this year, will mainly focus on producing equipment for the manufacture of solar photovoltaic cells, Xinhua said.

The plant will ultimately reach an annual output of 300 machines with an annual production value of CNY2 billion, the report said.

Applied Materials already has a research and development center in the western Chinese city of Xi'an, Xinhua said.

Spokesman Matt Ceniceros said Applied Materials is currently in discussions to build a plant in China, but nothing has been finalized.

"With more than 80% of solar sales in China, we're looking to produce some solar equipment in that market to be closer to customers," he said.

MADRID (MarketWatch) -- Shares of semiconductor maker STMicroelectronics NV /quotes/zigman/220261/quotes/nls/stm STM -2.36% /quotes/zigman/143584 FR:STM -8.38% fell nearly 8% on Tuesday in the wake of second-quarter results released late the prior day. The company reported net profit of $420 million, against $356 million in the year-ago period, as revenue fell 1.5% to $2.55 billion. Analysts polled by Bloomberg News forecast net income of $182.4 million on sales of $2.55 billion. The group sees revenue in the third quarter in a range of a fall of 5% to a rise of 2%, with a gross margin of around 35.5%. Analysts at Royal Bank of Scotland said in a research note that the midpoint of the sales forecast is 5% short of consensus. "Clearly STMicroelectronic's results and guidance are disappointing and somewhat worse than some of their peers that have reported so far," said the analysts, who said much of this is due to the group's exposure to Nokia Corp.
