Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
29 Jul, 2.022, 6:27 am

ArcelorMittal announced that Europe segment crude steel production declined by -4.9% to 8.3 million tonne in Q2 of 2022 as compared to 8.7 million tonne in Q1 of 2022 and 12.0% lower as compared to Q2 of 2021. Production was down Q2 of 2022 as compared to 1Q 2022 on account of a planned reline in Eisenhuttenstadt and an adjustment of production to lower demand. These same factors and the additional impact of responses to higher energy prices led to a 10.6% decline in Q2 of 2022 as compared to Q2 of 2021 on a scope adjusted basis.

Steel shipments declined by 4.4% to 8.0 million tonne in Q2 of 2022 as compared to 8.3 million tonne in Q1 of 2022 and were 3.9% lower as compared to 8.3 million tonne in Q2 of 2021 primarily due to a slowdown in demand. Adjusted for the ArcelorMittal Italia deconsolidation, shipments in Q2 2022 were 2.6% lower as compared to Q2 of 2021.

Sales in Q2 of 2022 increased by 3.1% to USD 13.4 billion, as compared to USD 13.0 billion in Q1 of 2022, primarily due to 6.1% higher average selling prices. Sales were significantly higher than Q2 of 2021 and include the positive impact of automotive contract price resets.

Operating income in Q2 of 2022 was USD 2,063 million as compared to USD 2,081 million in Q1 of 2022 and higher than USD 1,262 million in Q2 of 2021. EBITDA in Q2 of 2022 of USD 2,389 million decreased by 0.8%, as compared to USD 2,407 million in Q1 of 2022, with the impacts of lower steel shipments and a negative translation effect due to USD appreciation largely being offset by a positive price-cost effect. EBITDA in Q2 of 2022 increased significantly as compared to USD 1,578 million in Q2 of 2021 primarily due to a positive price-cost effect, including the impact of contract pricing resets, offset in part by lower steel shipment volumes and a negative translation effect.

After Gas, Nippon Steel to Buy Coal at Record High Prices Glencore

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
29 Jul, 2.022, 6:30 am

Bloomberg reported that Japanese steel giant Nippon Steel has signed the most expensive coal supply contract in its history with trader Glencore under which Nippon Steel will buy coal at USD 375 per tonne until March 2023, at three times higher than the price of the deals made last year. The Glencore deal may be used as the benchmark price for other annual supplies by thermal coal users in Asia. That will boost the cost to generate electricity, and threatens to increase power bills for businesses and households.

Earlier, Nippon Steel signed a contract to purchase liquefied natural gas at the highest price in Japan’s history. Reuters had reported on 19 July that Nippon Steel has recently purchased a liquefied natural gas shipment at the highest price ever paid in the country amid growing fears of disruptions of LNG supplies from Russia. The report quoted sources as saying that Nippon Steel bought an LNG cargo for delivery in September at a price of USD 41 per million British thermal units, most likely supplied by a major trading house.

The company uses energy resources to generate electricity for its factories, and also supplies part of the electricity to other consumers.

JSW Steel Continuing CAPEX Plans on Steel Demand Prospects

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
29 Jul, 2.022, 6:31 am

India’s leading steel maker JSW Steel in an Investor Call has reiterated commitment to CAPEX spending. JSW Steel Deputy MD Mr Jayant Acharya told analysts “You have to look at little middle term when we are committing capital expenditure as per our strategic plan. We are very optimistic with regard to the overall building infrastructure in India and also other sectors of the economy either you take auto, or you take packaging industry, the renewable industry, appliances. They all have lot of big potential, whereas there are a very few players in India, who are capable of creating new capacity. That is why we are not changing our plans on the CAPEX for expanding our capacity by 7.5 million tonnes at Vijayanagar, nor expanding capacity at Bhushan Power & Steel to 5 million tonnes. They are on track. They already placed orders. Project work is in full swing at the site. Only what we have reduced the capital expenditure is relating to special projects and other discretionary projects. Our view on the outlook or growth in steel demand in India, it remains intact.”

Mr Acharya added “We have put only INR 5,000 crores on hold and INR 48,000 crores remain for the next 3 years. As and when situation improves, we will take a call on this INR 5,000 crores.”

While answering to a query on decarbonization CAPEX, Mr Acharya said “We already have 2 plants using the coke oven gas and the other heat at Dolvi. That is 175 MW units, just commissioned a few days back. There is another 60 MW & there is one more plant, which will get commissioned by September. 170 MW plus 60 MW is 230 MW at Dolvi is majorly to use the heat and the gas that would come in the process. The way we are working as a part of decarbonization is by reducing carbon emission to replace our entire coal-based power plants with renewables. In the direction, we have signed with JSW energy for this 958 MW. 225 MW has already started and balance will start in this financial year. Over and above that, we are also looking at seriously to commit for more renew able power in future and replace the existing fossil fuel-based power in addition to catching the heat and the gases that are there in the process to generate power.”

Voestalpine Joins SBTi for Green Steel Compliance

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
29 Jul, 2.022, 6:35 am

As customer and supplier are increasingly focusing on efforts to achieve the global targets set out in the Paris Climate Agreement, Austrian steel maker Voestalpine has decided to subject itself to examination by the Science Based Targets initiative to offer our stakeholders the greatest possible levels of transparency and comparability when it comes to climate action measures. The complex process of monitoring and goal setting along the entire process chain highlights our commitment to achieving climate neutrality over the long term. The objectives apply not only to the steel-producing sites in Linz and Donawitz, but also the entire voestalpine Group. Specifically, and taking the year 2019 as its reference, the company plans a 30% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions and a 25% reduction in Scope 3 emissions by 2029.

greentec steel is Voestalpine’s ambitious phased plan for green steel production: in a first significant intermediate step, partial replacement of the existing blast furnace route with a hybrid-electric steel pathway could reduce carbon emissions by around 30% from 2027, corresponding to around 3 to 4 million tonnes of CO2 annually. In 2027, voestalpine will begin operating one electric arc furnace at each of the Linz and Donawitz sites; the necessary preparations are already underway. Voestalpine’s mission is carbon-neutral steel production using green hydrogen by 2050, for which the Group is already undertaking intensive research into promising breakthrough technologies.

The Science Based Targets initiative is a partnership between the Climate Disclosure Project, UN Global Compact, World Resources Institute, and World Wildlife Fund for Nature. It helps companies align their business activities with the Paris Climate Goals, and provides scientific proof of this achievement. Globally, around 3,000 companies from a wide range of sectors including the steel industry are involved in the SBTi. In addition to direct greenhouse gas emissions from production (Scope 1), the Group is now also setting itself ambitious goals to reduce Scope 2 emissions (energy-related) and Scope 3 emissions (raw materials, transport, etc.). These target reductions will be scientifically evaluated within the framework of the independent Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) to ensure their compatibility with the Paris goals, and, following detailed examination, validated correspondingly.

SAIL has Supplied Steel Plates for Aircraft Carrier INS Vikrant

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
29 Jul, 2.022, 6:39 am

Indian Navy has created maritime history by taking delivery of the prestigious Indigenous Aircraft Carrier Vikrant from Cochin Shipyard Limited in Kochi in Kerala. Designed by Indian Navy's in-house Directorate of Naval Design and built by Cochin Shipyard, the carrier is christened after her illustrious predecessor, India's first Aircraft Carrier which played a vital role in the 1971 war. The 262 meter long carrier has a full displacement of close to 45,000 tonnes which is much larger and advanced than her predecessor. The ship is powered by four Gas Turbines totaling 88 MW power and has a maximum speed of 28 Knots. Built at an overall cost of close to INR 20,000 crores, the project has been progressed in three Phases of contract between MoD and CSL, concluded in May 2007, December 2014 and October 2019 respectively. The ship's keel was laid in February 2009, followed by launching in August 2013. It has an overall indigenous content of 76%. With the delivery of Vikrant, India has joined a select group of nations US, UK, Russia, France & China having the niche capability to indigenously design and build an Aircraft Carrier.

Vikrant has been built with high degree of automation for machinery operation, ship navigation and survivability, and has been designed to accommodate an assortment of fixed wing and rotary aircraft. The ship would be capable of operating air wing consisting of 30 aircraft comprising of MIG-29K fighter jets, Kamov-31, MH-60R multi-role helicopters, in addition to indigenously manufactured Advanced Light Helicopters and Light Combat Aircraft Navy. Using a novel aircraft-operation mode known as STOBAR, Short TakeOff but Arrested Landing, Vikrant is equipped with a ski jump for launching aircraft, and a set of arrester wires for their recovery onboard.

A major spin-off of this is the development and production of indigenous warship grade steel for the ship through a partnership between Navy, DRDO and Steel Authority of India Limited, which has enabled the country to become self-sufficient with respect to warship steel. Warship steel is a challenging specialty grade having required hardness, toughness & ductility at up to minus 60 degrees Celsius al0ong with superior corrosion properties.

Defence R&D Organization took up a project in 1999 to develop and mass-produce warship grade steel. Russia provided the chemical formula of warship steel called ABA, which was mastered by SAIL at its plant at Bhilai, Rourkela, Bokaro & Durgapur. Rourkela Steel Plant found that tempering and quenching gave the required grain structure and then in a breakthrough Bhilai Steel Plant developed it through continuous casting process and warship grade steel is now affordable.

Bhilai Steel Plant supplied bulk requirement of warship steel plates, while Rourkela supplied super thick plates through quenching and tempering. INS Vikrant used three special steels grades, DMR 249A for the hull & body, DMR 249B for the flight deck & DMR Z2S was developed for the floor of compartments that housed heavy equipment like engines and generators for absorbing the compression and decompression from the heavy equipment. In the pipeline now is DMR 292A, which will be used for the hull of submarines for submarines that will be built under Project 7S. Now all the warships being built in the country are being manufactured using indigenous steel.

The day was marked with the opening of a new entrance area to the Steel & Slab facility, featuring street art by local Welsh artists and a huge steel ingot, remembering the way steel was made before the introduction of continuous casting technology. The celebrations were given a special boost with the presence of Port Talbot legend and Hollywood superstar Mr Michael Sheen and famous Welsh Actress Ms Di Botcher.

When it was commissioned, Caster 1 was the largest single investment ever made at the works. Works started on the plant in May 1979 and by March 1981 more than 125,000 tonnes of concrete, 2300 piles and 12,000 tonnes of steel had gone into the completed foundations. At the time, this was the single biggest investment in the works’ history, costing a staggering GBP 100 million back in 1982. Now Port Talbot has three continuous casters.

Tata Steel UK is the largest steelmaker in the UK with primary steelmaking at Port Talbot in South Wales supporting manufacturing and distribution operations at sites across Wales, England and Northern Ireland as well as Norway, Sweden, France and Germany.

Polish steel maker Cognor has chosen Danieli’s Q One technology patented by Danieli Automation to replace the existing transformer serving its 48 tonne EAF in Stalowa Wola in Poland to improve EAF performances and reduce operating costs. In an increasingly difficult market, with growing transformation costs, prime materials and energy steel producers are very much interested in Q-One digital power feeders to improve the operational costs of their electric and ladle furnaces. Q One is able to reduce electrical energy consumption about 10%, electrode consumption at least 10%. Q One offers the same performances while allowing a shorter power-on time, resulting in increased productivity. Q One at Cognor is scheduled to go in production in summer 2023.

Operating electric steelmaking by using Q One also means limited electrical disturbances and a power factor close to the unity on the MV distribution, avoiding the use of compensation systems.

Q One can be applied either to new installations or existing plants as upgrades, to small and large capacity melting units with individual power outputs up to 200 MW.

Poraj based Cognor, founded in 1991, is part of an industrial group dealing with the production of steel products and trading in metal scrap and a leading producer of long products in Poland.

India’s Ministry of steel has constituted an advisory committee for secondary steel under the chairmanship of Minister of Civil Aviation & Steel Mr Jyotiraditya Scindia to identify and deliberate on the issues pertaining to the steel sector especially the secondary steel industry. Apart from the Steel Minister, the advisory committee will have representation from All India Induction Furnace Association, Sponge Iron Manufacturers’ Association, Institute for Stainless Steel development Association, Alloy Steel producers Association, Steel re-rollers Association, Pellet Manufacturers’ Association, Indian Ferro alloy Producers association etc.

The first meeting of the committee is scheduled on 8 August where it is likely to identify issues of concern and set priority for the committee for action. Inputs will also be invited from all stakeholders so that actionable points are quickly identified and resolved. Steel Ministry hopes that the important inputs coming from the advisory committee would help in formulation of a much need policy for the secondary steel sector.

Secondary steel producers form an important component of the domestic steel industry. But their share in country’s steel output has been falling sharply over the years. From a level of 55% in 2015, secondary steel producers now account for an output of just 40% of country’s total steel production. The secondary steel sector, which has seen a sharp fall in its capacity utilisation levels, wants higher allocation of coal from Coal India while steel government’s intervention to levy export duty on iron ore pellets so that the key steel making raw material is available for domestic producers.
