New Map Database from Tele Atlas Delivers Industry Firsts

GENT, Belgium --(Business Wire)-- Tele Atlas (News - Alert), a leading global provider of digital maps and dynamic content for navigation and location-based solutions, today unveiled the latest version of its database, MultiNet® 2009.12. For the first time, MultiNet now includes changes from drivers in the Asia Pacific region, as well as nearly 5,000 kilometers (3,100 miles) of new or adjusted geometry across Bulgaria, Hungary, Ireland, Portugal, Spain and Turkey. MultiNet also sets the new standard for map accuracy, with community input now helping Tele Atlas to detect changes and perfect its maps worldwide to the highest industry standard of five meters or 16 feet or less.

MultiNet encompasses nearly 32 million kilometers (20 million miles) across 94 countries and territories. It is the only digital map database in the world that is constantly validated by the tens of millions of drivers who use it in GPS devices, smartphone applications and online. To date, Tele Atlas has validated and processed well over one million edits sourced from this group of users, the largest GPS data collection community in the world. The latest release of the database includes edits across 16 attributes and features that changed crossings into roundabouts, added or adjusted street names, and adjusted traffic flow. Tele Atlas also leveraged anonymous GPS measurements in combination with other sources and processes to validate and realign or extend the world's road network.

"We're excited that the user community has expanded so significantly this year and that the breadth and depth of its contributions continues to grow," said Peter Davie, director of product management at Tele Atlas. "We look forward to expanding it even further in the future, so that public service partners and other contributors worldwide can actively help us create the most accurate maps and local search content." To update its maps, Tele Atlas captures and verifies changes from a comprehensive network of global sources, ranging from government documents and public safety officials to construction companies and truck drivers, as well as satellite and aerial imagery. By validating and adding contributions from individual drivers as an additional source, Tele Atlas is able to increase the total number of changes identified by its network, particularly in geographically dispersed and rural areas covered less frequently by other data sources. This community input is backed by stringent review and validation processes and further enables Tele Atlas to create fresher, higher quality maps and deliver a better experience for end users of its maps. Recent quality tests show Tele Atlas maps of the United States, Canada and Mexico rate highest in terms of quality and reliability, and in certain markets are up to 10% more accurate than other maps. Tele Atlas quality testing uses a process certified by the TÜV SÜD, a leading global testing and inspection organization with 14,000 experts providing consulting, testing, certification and training services at more than 600 locations in Europe, North America and Asia.

M4JAM extends its offerings

Returning client

One of the big brands returning to the platform is TomTom. The navigation and mapping company was one of the pioneer brands having seen the platform's potential to assist in keeping its mapping solutions as up-to-date and as accurate as possible, in a time and cost effective manner. The company initially used M4JAM to complete 7500 point of interest (POI) validation jobs across the country. Following the success of this campaign, it released an additional 7000 special places POI validations. It has just released an additional 13 000 POI validation jobs nationally.

GM of TomTom Africa, Etienne Louw, explains, "We found that the speed with which the platform's community completed the previous campaigns was remarkable and we would like to tap into this again. Supplying our clients with the freshest, most accurate points of interest will always be a priority and this adds another way for us to maintain our mapping data for Africa on a daily basis to cope with an ever-changing world."

L.s.,

Amsterdam, 31 March, 2015 - TomTom (TOM2) today releases its annual Traffic Index highlighting the impact of traffic congestion in over 200 cities around the world. TomTom data reveals that traffic congestion nearly doubles journey times during the evening rush hour. In 2014, the average commuter spent an extra 100 hours a year travelling during the evening rush hour alone.

According to TomTom Traffic data, the evening rush hour is the most congested time of day. Nearly every city with the highest overall levels of congestion can expect to double their congestion level during the evening rush hour.

Commuters in Istanbul experience the worst traffic congestion overall, the evening rush hour is no exception. The average 30 minute drive in the city will take over an hour during evening rush hour, leading to an extra 125 hours wasted stuck in traffic every year. In Los Angeles, a 30 minute commute in the evening will take 54 minutes due to congestion, an extra 92 hours annually.

“TomTom’s mission is to reduce traffic congestion for everyone,” said Ralf-Peter Schaefer, VP TomTom Traffic. “Road authorities and local governments can use TomTom’s traffic data to better manage traffic flow during the rush hour. We can help businesses plan smarter working hours to help their employees avoid travelling during rush hour. And we give drivers the real-time traffic information and smart routing they need to avoid congested roads and get there faster.”

Retriever Communications And LoJack Corporation To Offer New Mobile Field Service Management Platform

Orlando, FL (Marketwired) - Today at the 2015 NAFA Institute & Expo, Retriever Communications, a global provider of mobile workforce automation, announced a collaboration with LoJack Corporation , a provider of vehicle theft recovery and advanced fleet management solutions, to launch a new mobile field service management platform. The new offering will provide field service fleet organizations with a scalable mobile solution that combines telematics and fleet management with dynamic data capture and real time scheduling.

"Until now, the enterprise didn't have access to a comprehensive mobility solution that can combine wide-ranging mobile workflow functionality with specialized fleet management and telematics," said Mary Brittain-White, CEO, Retriever Communications. Creates a new standard for the field service market by offering a complete and connected mobile force ecosystem
Caters to a variety of operational needs, from simple to complex dynamic workflows
Allows for fleet operators to work offline
Offers complete visibility and transparency into field activity
Protects vehicles from unauthorized use
Increases safety for field technicians on the road and on the job

The collaboration between Retriever and LoJack offers a holistic IT approach to field service and improves cost savings by:

Streamlining internal business processes by going paperless
Increasing transparency and accountability of a mobile workforce to improve fuel usage for vehicles, automate work order management, and improve driver safety

VIDEO: TomTom car collects data to rival Google's Street View

A CAR which stopped at Tiverton Tesco this week drew glances from shoppers - and not just because its two burly male occupants chose to park in a parent and child space.

The TomTom mapping car was kitted out with the very latest in laser and satellite data gathering equipment and was on a mission to gather images and information for the tech company's latest offerings.

TomTom is best known for its satellite navigation systems for vehicles. But the firm is investing millions of dollars on a worldwide mapping system similar to that offered by Google, with its Street View service.

The Polish-registered TomTom car seen in Tiverton was fitted with Sick 3D laser scanners which take thousands of distance measurements every minute, as well as an array of cameras.

Data gathered will be used to improve satnav systems, but could also make an appearance in wearable tech such as watches for sportspeople.

Autofabrikanten dreigen tegen Nokia
