Rio Tinto, Baowu Steel & Tsinghua University signs MoU to Improve Environmental Performance across Steel Value Chain

One of the world's largest iron ore producers Rio Tinto has signed a MoU with China's largest steel producer, China Baowu Steel Group and Tsinghua University, one of China's most prestigious and influential universities, to develop and implement new methods to reduce carbon emissions and improve environmental performance across the steel value chain. The China Iron and Steel Association invited the Parties to sign the MOU at its China International Steel and Raw Materials Conference held in Qingdao. The MOU will enable the formation of a joint working group tasked with identifying a pathway to support the goal of reducing carbon emissions across the entire steel value chain, which accounts for between seven and nine per cent of the world's carbon emissions. The working group will establish a joint action plan on how to best utilise the Parties' complementary strengths in research and development, technologies, processes, equipment, logistics, industry coordination and policy advisory capacities to combat climate change and improve environmental performance.

Rio Tinto CEO Mr J-S Jacques said "This pioneering partnership across the steel value chain will bring together solutions to help address the steel industry's carbon footprint and improve its environmental performance. The materials we produce have an important role to play in the transition to a low carbon future and we are committed to partnering with our customers and others to find the most sustainable ways to produce, process and market them. We are already doing this in aluminium and now, through this partnership, we will be doing it in the steel industry. We thank CISA for its support and look forward to collaborating with China's largest steel producer, China Baowu, and Tsinghua University, a global leader in climate change research and collaboration."

China Baowu chairman, Chen Derong said "China Baowu is committed to ecological and sustainable development. We will promote sustainable production through intelligent manufacturing. We want to make a difference to the iron and steel ecosystem by developing greener factories and enterprises to deliver a cleaner, more sustainable steel industry. China Baowu looks forward to exploring low-carbon metallurgical innovation with Rio Tinto and Tsinghua University, and building a low-carbon industrial value chain. We hope to jointly address climate challenges with our partners, and create a model of harmonious coexistence between cities and steel mills."

BMZ Strengthen Its Position in Automotive Industry

BelTA reported that Belarusian steel mill BMZ continues strengthening its position on the global steel market in the segment of products intended for automotive industry, with the relevant sales exceeding USD 35 million in H1 2019. The company intends to double the figure by the end of the year. BMZ Press Secretary Aleksandr Olesik told BelTA that BMZ started making products for automotive industry back in 2015 when long-product rolling mill No.2 was commissioned. Since then the company has been authorized by 35 automobile industry companies to ship 65 kinds of metal products. The number includes Hirschvogel and Mahindra Forgings, which make components for the world's leading automobile concerns Daimler, Volkswagen, Renault, and other ones.

BMZ works hard to find new customers. This year the company has received the first order for 900 tonnes of rolled metal from a leading European manufacturer of shock absorber springs after a four-year approval process. 12,67 -0,45 (-3,45%)

ArcelorMittal South Africa may close some sites as it battles weak economy
2 MIN READ

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - ArcelorMittal’s South Africa unit said on Wednesday it may close some operations pending a review as it looks to strengthen its long-term sustainability and battle cheap imports, rising costs and a flagging local economy.

The company, majority-owned by ArcelorMittal, said its review would exclude its coke operations and the Highveld Structural Mill but would include some of its major operating sites, individual plants and production areas.

ArcelorMittal South Africa, which has for some time complained about cheap imports eating into its business, has also been hit by subdued investment and infrastructure spending in the country, as well as a weak South African economy.

“By actively addressing those operating sites, individual plants and production areas which historically have had a negative impact on the company’s financial results, the board aims to strengthen the financial fundamentals of those business areas,” the firm said in a statement.

The company said it had begun consultations with its employees and trade unions on jobs but did not provide further details.

In July the firm said it planned to cut more than 2,000 jobs.

Bhushan Steel Limited case in Delhi Listed for October 1

The Serious Fraud Investigation Office on Thursday told the Delhi High Court that Bhushan Steel Ltd's former chairman Brij Bhushan Singal and his daughter-in-law, summoned as accused in a fraud case, should appear before a trial court for seeking bail. The agency made the submission during the hearing of the anticipatory bail pleas of Brij Bhushan Singal and his daughter in law Ritu. Solicitor General Maninder Acharya told Justice Vibhu Bakhru that the apprehension of the accused that they will be arrested when they appear before the trial court, which has summoned them for Oct. 14, was unfounded. He said "The trial court has taken cognizance of the charge sheet filed by the SFIO in the case and has summoned them to appear on Oct. 14. They first have to seek bail from the trial court and not from the high court," Acharya, along with central government standing counsel Anurag Ahluwalia.”

Senior advocate Siddharth Luthra and Arshdeep Singh, representing Brij Bhushan Singal and Ritu, said they have an apprehension that the 82-year-old and the woman will be arrested once they appear before the trial court and they need protection from arrest.

The high court asked the counsel for SFIO to seek instructions on the matter and listed it for hearing on Oct. 1.

Salzgitter Group Adjusts Earnings Forecast for Financial Year 2019

In Supervisory Board meeting of Salzgitter AG the following key topics were discussed, among others, and the respective resolutions were subsequently taken by the Executive Board: Along with other companies, Salzgitter AG is the subject of investigations on the grounds of suspected cartel arrangements regarding heavy plate and strip steel products. Given the advanced stage of discussions with the German Federal Cartel Office, Salzgitter AG assumes that the procedure can be brought to an end in the near future in mutual agreement. The risk provision formed in the 2018 annual financial accounts will therefore be increased by around EUR 140 million as of September 30, 2019.

The “FitStructure 2.0" profit improvement program that has been in preparation for a few months harbors profit potential of more than WUR 200 million that is gradually to take effect through to 2023. Specifying the program that comprises more than 600 individual measures has now reached the final stage.

In line with the forecast to date, EBT from operations is anticipated between EUR 125 and 175 million. As a consequence of the aforementioned risk provision and of the restructuring expenses still to be determined for the implementation of "FitStructure 2.0" we anticipate a pretax loss in the mid double-digit million euro range for the financial year 2019.

Due Diligence of Stressed Assets is Challenging - Mr Koushik Chatterjee of Tata Steel

Economic Times quoted Mr Koushik Chatterjee CFO of Tata Steel as saying that due diligence before taking over remains a key challenge under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code. He said "Due diligence is a challenge. The issue is that in an IBC asset you would not get everything - not all the information, not all the access, as the resolution professional is himself struggling in managing the business and is not an industry person in many cases.”

Mr Chatterjee said that "There has to be about 45% of senior leadership engagement in the process. Another challenge is that these are stressed assets so they will not be compliant in many aspects like paying taxes etc. If, in those circumstances, a whitewash is not available then it would make the investor fairly uncertain about how to deal with it."

NLMK Hits 5 Million Tonne Slab Steel Supply to OMK Milestone

NLMK Group has shipped 5 million tonnes of slabs to Vyksa Steel Works, part of OMK Group. NLMK Group and OMK created an unique process chain in Russia in 2012. NLMK manufactures slabs at it Lipetsk site from captive iron ore supplied by Stoilensky. VSW then processes these slabs into heavy plates at Mill 5000 and into large-diametre pipes at its Pipe Electric Welding Plant No 4. High quality of NLMK steel, coupled with Vyksa’s advanced production processes for plates and large-diameter pipes, ensure pipe production on par with global standards, as evidenced by OMK’s participation in international pipeline projects, including Power of Siberia, Bovanenkovo–Ukhta, Ukhta–Torzhok, Central Asia–China, and Zapolyarye–Purpe.

Ilya Gushin, NLMK VP for Sales, said “As part of its contribution to strategic national projects, NLMK Group has already shipped 5 million tonnes of steel used in the production of high-quality large-diameter pipes to OMK. This new milestone in our partnership is a great example of productive win-win cooperation with consumers operating within a single process environment.”

Chinese Steel Sector Capacity Curbs Facing Issues - Mr Xing

Reuters quoted China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology official as saying that global top steelmaker China, despite years of trying to curb overcapacity in its steel sector, is still having trouble containing increasing illegal new capacity. Mr Xing Tao, deputy director of the ministry’s raw materials department, said “Illegal new mills include those not approved by the government, outdated mills that had reopened after being shut and mills that were supposed to be shut in capacity swaps, in which companies move plants to other regions to reduce the concentration of production in polluted industrial areas.

Some smaller steel plants have also taken advantage of lax environmental enforcement to ramp up production ahead of bigger rivals, industry and government officials have said, jeopardizing national anti-smog targets and defying industry consolidation.

China has shut 700 small steel mills with 140 million tonnes of steel capacity deemed sub-standard, plus 150 million tonnes of inefficient capacity at larger firms, in a four-year campaign against pollution and excess capacity in heavy industries.

Severstal-metiz Masters New Type of Railway Fasteners

Severstal-metiz has mastered a new type of rail fastener a flat washer. The flat washer is an element of the upgraded terminal bolt rail fastening - KB-65. Thanks to it, the rail is pressed against the sleeper not by rigid but by Skl type elastic terminals, and the flat washer itself is put on the terminal bolt. Mr Sergey Kovryakov, Severstal-metiz general director said that “We developed a new type of product in just a couple of months. The product has already passed acceptance tests with the participation of a client - Russian Railways - and has confirmed compliance with the requirements. Now we are making an experimental batch of washers. It will be delivered to the client in the near future.”

Design Bureau is the most common rail fastening in Russia and the CIS countries. Its new modification can be applied on almost all types of railways: from heavy trunk to access roads at industrial sites. The main advantage of this type of bonding is its high operational stability, which reduces the need for maintenance of railway tracks.

Maraging Steel Produces World’s Finest Fencing Blades - worldsteel

Due to its strength, flexibility and extreme toughness, professional fencers will only compete using swords made from maraging steel. With roots in aviation, maraging steel is a high-strength alloy made with around 18% nickel and lesser amounts of cobalt, molybdenum, titanium and aluminium. This combination of alloying elements stops titanium carbide precipitates from forming during heat-treatments as part of the manufacturing process. This in turn preserves the alloy’s amazing impact strength, ductility and toughness.

US two-time Olympian fencer Ms Lee Kiefer, has what is known in fencing circles as a ‘killing flicking riposte’. From the French for ‘retort’, the riposte is an offensive fencing action made to hit your opponent after blocking an attack. But what makes Kiefer’s riposte special is her spectacular flick, in which she whips her fencing blade to drastically bend it, so she can hit opponents in hard-to-reach places. The diminutive fencer has used her killer riposte again and again to win medal after medal, and it wouldn’t be possible without her maraging steel blade.

Mr Eric Mallet, fencing master and former member of France’s Junior National team, now running the Austin Fencing Club in Texas said that “Thirty years ago we didn’t really have this flicking action it was just so rare to see, as the quality of the blade wouldn’t permit this. But now we have flashy fencers that carry out actions that are so physically impressive. The reason they can do this is down to the blade they use.”
