Congressman Urge Trump to Exempt Israeli Steel & Aluminum from Tariffs

Cleveland Jewish News reported that two congressmen on the House tax writing committee, a Republican and a Democrat, want the Trump administration to exempt Israel from steel and aluminum tariffs. Reps. Brad Schneider, D-Ill and David Schweikert, R-Ariz., asked Robert Lighthizer, the US trade representative, in a letter to add Israel to a list of allies exempted from the tariffs, among them South Korea, Australia, Argentina, Brazil, Canada and Mexico. The letter noted that Israel’s exports represented a tiny fraction of US imports of steel and aluminum 0.0005% and 0.12%, respectively.

The congressmen, who are members of the House Ways and Means Committee said that “While these numbers may seem small, the fact remains that the US is a major trading partner for Israel and any disruption in the economic relationship will have a far-reaching impact. We do not believe imports of steel and aluminum from Israel are a threat to US national security and are asking you to explain why Israel has not been granted an exemption.”

Swiss Army Knife Get its Edge from Victorinox steel

When Swiss knife maker Karl Elsener opened his workshop in Ibach in 1884, he could not have imagined the global success that was to follow. The multifaceted tool he created would become a Swiss icon, taken into space by Nasa’s astronauts, and even exhibited at New York’s Museum of Modern Art. This unique tool was the Swiss Army Knife, a foldable steel utility instrument that gained renown as a precision cutting tool for Switzerland’s soldiers. The main blade, alongside other tools such as screwdrivers and can openers, is compactly stowed inside the handle and unfolds through a pivot point mechanism.

Elsener’s company – named Victorinox, in memory of his mother, Victoria, and after the French term for stainless steel, acier inoxydable – became the first manufacturer of the Swiss Army Knife. And the power of steel has always remained at its heart, with Victorinox’s standard steel said to be an exclusive blend from Germany and France.

Elsener delivered the first major supply of knives to the Swiss army in 1891, after founding the Association of Swiss Master Cutlers. Originally intended to help soldiers disassemble rifles, and open canned food, the knives’ increasing production was subsequently split between Victorinox and its Swiss rival, Wenger.

In 2017, Victorinox, now the sole supplier to the Swiss military, hit a production milestone of 500 million ‘Original Swiss Army’ knives. The company continues to be based in the village of Ibach, in the affectionately titled ‘Swiss Knife Valley’, now a major tourist attraction.

The story of Victorinox’s Swiss Army Knife is one of constant adaptation and refinement, reflecting the evolution of manufacturing and consumer needs.

The martensitic stainless steel alloy used for the cutting blades is optimised for toughness and corrosion resistance and has a composition of 15% chromium, 0.60% silicon, 0.52% carbon, 0.50% molybdenum, and 0.45% manganese, according to Victorinox.

LKAB to Produces Fossil Free Pellet

It may not look like much yet, but a globally unique pilot plant is currently under construction on an industrial estate in Vitafors. The aim is to produce an entirely fossil-free fuel. The test plant is the next stage in the pilot phase of the HYBRIT initiative. Here, fossil fuels will be replaced by bio-oils to provide completely fossil-free production, initially at one of our pelletisation plants. This means that total fossil carbon dioxide emissions for the Malmberget plant will be reduced by as much as 40%, which is equivalent to approximately 60,000 tonnes per year during the test period. The vision is that this will ultimately lead to entirely fossil-free production. LKAB will be constructing the plant before handing it over to HYBRIT, which will be the owner. It is planned to complete construction in March next year and to be fully operational during May. Initial testing will be conducted until 2021.

Project manager Emil Olsson said that "What we are building is actually a completely new system for using bio-oil for blast furnaces, with storage, pumping and heating of the oil – the complete chain up to the furnace in the plant. This is not exactly a complicated construction; the principles are the same as the plants we operate today. The challenge lies in the different physical properties of bio-oils that we need to account for. The plant needs to be able to handle more aggressive and unwieldy oils."

Mr Roger Karlsson, R&D manager at LKAB said that "Bio-oil testing is a fantastic step towards the vision of a completely CO2-free LKAB. With this conversion we will be producing a fossil-free pellet during the trial period, something that we will probably be the first in the world to achieve. Only diesel and some of the heat production will remain fossil-based; however, we are also working to identify solutions to this."

SMS Commissions Hot Strip Mill at SSAB in Borlange

SSAB in Borlange Sweden has rolled the first transfer bar on July 24, 2019, after conversion of the side guides at hot-strip mill roughing stand R1 by SMS group in the summer shutdown 2019. The modernization performed by SMS group was aimed at rolling wedge- and camber-free transfer bars and at stabilizing the strip run in the downstream process steps in the finishing train and the exit roller table including coiler. To achieve these objectives, SMS group implemented the following scope of modernization in the hot strip mill: In addition to installing new hydraulic side guides at the roughing stand entry and exit ends, the pertaining X-Pact® level-1 automation including Roll Alignment Control was provided and integrated into the existing basic automation systems. The side guides were reconstructed with the aid of several components already available at the hot strip mill. The new and strong hydraulic side guides in the roughing mill stand entry and exit sections serve for slab respectively transfer bar centering, with simultaneous positioning of the hydraulically operated horizontal adjustments at the roughing mill stand, and allow wedges in the thickness profile to be compensated and hence cambers to be prevented.

The contracted scope of SMS group also included a new sizing unit for side guide setting and the valve stands.

SSAB appreciated the smooth running of commissioning. Bjorn West from SSAB said that “We have taken another step forward thanks to the plant and process technology provided by SMS group. Now, we have a valuable tool available to effectively and efficiently improve the transfer bar geometry and hence to advance the rolling process as well as the final wide hot strip quality.”
