Image Source: DOE ArcelorMittal USA HPC4Mfg Supercomputing

GrantsArcelorMittal Global Research and Development Center in East Chicago is once again the recipient of two prestigious HighPerformance Computing for Manufacturing Program HPC4Mfg grants through a Department of Energy initiative. The DOE announced USD 3.3 million in federal funding for 11 manufacturing and materials projects aimed at solving technical challenges in manufacturing and materials development in the United States.

Grant one: “Ab-initio Guided Design and Materials Informatics for Accelerated Product Development of Next Generation Advanced High Strength Steels.” ArcelorMittal is partnering with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and Argonne National Laboratory to establish a method for rapid product development of next generation high strength steels. ArcelorMittal’s typical product development lifecycle equates to approximately 4-6 years, which consists of developing new chemistries and testing the chemistries many times until proven successful. The labs, along with ArcelorMittal, will use HPC at the atomistic scale and artificial intelligence with the aim of reducing the development time.

Grant two: “Reduced Order Modeling and Performance Prediction for Steel Refining Ladle Processing via High Performance Computing.” ArcelorMittal is collaborating with Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Purdue University Northwest to reduce the yield loss caused by impurities forming in the refining ladle process. In the steelmaking process, impurities must be eliminated to achieve optimal product performance. The only way to remove impurities is when the steel is molten. This study, taking place at the ladle at Indiana Harbor’s #3 steel producing operation, will examine techniques to produce cleaner steels for our customers. The goal is to conserve energy for ArcelorMittal USA by increasing the probability of melting steel correctly the first time.

HPC will allow faster calculations to evaluate multiple scenarios in a shorter time with the end goal of achieving process efficiency, which will reduce energy consumption at ArcelorMittal.

Indian Steel Exports in April-July’20 Surge by 140% YoY

Joint Plant Committee latest data showed that India’s production of finished steel in April-July 2020 fell by 39.8 percent to 21.152 million tonnes from 35.156 million tonnes in April-July of 2019 while steel consumption fell 43.3 percent to 18.909 million tonnes as against 33.346 million tonnes in the same period of the preceding fiscal. During April-June 2020, India's total exports of steel stood at 4.641 million tonnes as against 1.933 million tonnes in the year ago period, while imports reduced by 42 per cent to 1.506 million tonnes during the period under review from 2.597 million tonnes a year ago

Of the 4.64 million tonnes of total steel exports, Vietnam and China bought 1.4 million tonnes and 1.3 million tonnes of steel respectively, accounting for 80% of HR coil export. Vietnam has been a regular buyer of Indian HRC steel, but China’s emergence as a leading buyer, is rather surprising. Chinese stimulus to support post COVID19 economic recovery has resulted in unprecedent surge in steel demand in China resulting in USD 50-100 improvement in Chinese domestic steel prices luring buyers for cheaper imports.

Odisha Based Steel Units Want Iron Ore Exports Curbed

Financial Express reported that facing iron ore shortage, Odisha-based steel firms, which do not have operational captive mines, have asked the government to make it mandatory for all iron ore miners in the state to sell at least half of their produce to Odisha-based sponge iron and steel units unless they consume 50% for their own captive use. Only the balance quantities of ore could be exported to other parts of the country or abroad.

Odisha produces 110-115 million tonnes iron ore a year but leases for 19 merchant mines, which contributed around half expired in March and 18 of them were successfully auctioned. The government had extended the validity of all statutory approval of these mines by two years, to ensure the successful bidder can resume production immediately. But as on August 1, only three mines, two merchant and one captive, of these 18 could start limited production. All these three mines belong to JSW Steel, which is dispatching almost the entire production to their own plants. In July, 2020 Odisha disptached only 3 million tonnes against 8 million tonnes dispatch in July 2019.

EVRAZ to Save USD 12 million From New Projects Based on Advanced Analytics

EVRAZ plc started piloting smart adviser systems at six production sites. They were developed within the comprehensive programme Advanced Analytics implemented together with The Boston Consulting Group. The programme is expected to annually generate USD 12 million in savings. Advanced analytics is a trend in digitalisation, based on solutions involving machine learning and other artificial intelligence elements. Statistical models are used to analyse data collected from the operated equipment to develop recommendations on fine-tuning the production cycle to enhance efficiency, optimize costs, improve quality, and reduce idle time.

EVRAZ implemented smart adviser systems within three business divisions Urals, Siberia, and Coal:

Dynamic ore concentration management at EVRAZ KGOK enables stabilising the quality of iron ore concentrate and helps maximise the plant’s output. A digital system collects data on properties of ores coming in from various pits and determines the best proportions and parameters for their processing.

Optimisation of loading parameters at EVRAZ NTMK’s coking plant is needed to efficiently utilise coal from the Group’s mining assets (NTMK has increased the share of internally produced coal in the charge from 48 percent in mid-2018 to 90 percent in mid-2020). Based on three years’ worth of data, the system enables maximising the share of internally produced coal while maintaining the high quality of coke.

Optimise extra-furnace processing and ladling in the electric steel-making shop at EVRAZ ZSMK to minimise non-metallic impurities in rail products. The digital adviser will be prompting operator’s interventions at two key value-adding stages when metal is in the ladle furnace and in the vacuum degasser.

Dynamic processing at Abagur ore processing plant will help increase production of secondary concentrate thanks to reducing waste during processing. The system will prompt mill operators to interfere in an optimum way.

Advanced analytics for the operational control management centre at Raspadksiy Open Pit enables real-time decision making to minimise waste during production, reduce idle time, and improve capacity utilisation rate. Dynamic ore processing management at Raspadskaya ore processing plant is now at the first implementation stage, providing timely updates on deviations in the production process and enabling prompt response. At the second stage, the system will be prompting process adjustments to increase output and improve quality.

Salzgitter AG and VNG AG Cooperate for Green Gases

VNG AG and Salzgitter AG are to join forces to investigate the use of climate-neutral hydrogen and biomethane for producing steel at the Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH steelworks in Salzgitter in Lower Saxony. A letter of intent has been signed to this effect. The two companies’ vision is to supply the integrated steelworks in Salzgitter with so-called turquoise hydrogen produced in Central Germany through a pipeline. The first step initially involved assessing the economic viability based on a feasibility study conducted jointly with the Fraunhofer Research Institution for Energy Infrastructures and Geothermal Systems IEG as well as the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research ISI. The emphasis was placed on the potential deployment of pyrolysis technology for producing hydrogen.

“Based on the investigated scenarios, the cost of producing hydrogen from the pyrolysis procedure could be competitive compared with electrolysis and the process helpful in securing low emission hydrogen supplies. A prerequisite is, however, that the technological challenges of pyrolysis are surmounted in a timely fashion, that good application possibilities for the associated carbon are found, and that methane emissions along the entire process chain can be plausibly limited

The economic viability of using pyrolysis technology on an industrial scale while taking account of the various political framework conditions and necessary investments for the pyrolysis facilities, transport routes and the use of storage were the subject of the investigations. These scenarios differ depending on the price of CO2, electricity and gas and the use of biogas. In addition, a comparison was made with the use of pure natural gas or the deployment of the electrolysis method for producing hydrogen with electricity generated in Germany. Moreover, anchoring Salzgitter in a future hydrogen grid also played a role.

At Salzgitter AG, investigating the future use of hydrogen in production goes hand in hand at with an analysis of cutting-edge methods and innovative procedural technologies aimed at significantly reducing CO2 emissions: Under the project name of SALCOS (Salzgitter Low CO2 Steelmaking), a concept for decarbonizing steel production was developed back in 2015. The first steps in implementing this concept consisted of the PEM electrolysis with an output of 2.5 MW with installation currently under way and a high-temperature electrolyzer with a 720 kW output on the plant site in order to cover current requirements for hydrogen in annealing processes, as well as the building of seven wind turbines.
