GMS Market Commentary on Ship Breaking in Week 13

World's leading cash buyer of ships for recycling GMS said that “Rising Covid-19 cases across the sub-continent have led to further lockdowns in a number of countries, especially as certain areas (as seen recently with much of Europe) suffer from, what now seems to be a third wave of the virus, despite the increasingly positive impacts being reported from the rollout of the various vaccines globally, in addition to the lockdowns. Even the Turkish market is reporting an exaggerated number of infections and fatalities of late, with the Turkish government considering drastic actions to curb the rising spread. As a result, short sharp 7-day lockdowns are reportedly coming into effect in Bangladesh and India from Monday (with Pakistan expected to follow suit) in addition to extended lockdowns in Turkey, in an effort to try and curb the continuingly and seemingly exponential spread of the virus and its emerging variants, while the various vaccine rollouts continues globally at pace. Insubstantial ICU space (as seen across Brazil of late) is part of the reason for these measures, as authorities try desperately to prevent further infections and fatalities, as a majority of the populous are increasingly required to stay at home during this period (except for emergency cases).”

GMS said “Notwithstanding, vessel deliveries and beachings will have to be managed on a far more selective and case by case basis, rather than using the “business as normal” approach seen for most of this year. Ship recycling activities will not be ceasing completely, but certainly yards are reportedly shutting down for the next 7 days, as labourers stay home and only the very essential of ship deliveries will be permitted to take place under certain conditions.”

GMS added “As such, as we enter a new phase of the pandemic in the global recycling markets, Ship Owners (both on an ‘as is’ basis to mobilize crews from countries like India) and for their delivered units, should be expecting a slower pace to activities and increased restrictions in the immediate future.”

Severstal Deliver 27KT Large Diameter Pipes for Arctic LNG 2

PJSC Severstal has completed the supply of large-diameter pipes in the amount of 27 thousand tons for the development of the Salmanovskoye (Utrennoye) oil and gas condensate field under the Arctic LNG 2 project, which is being implemented by NOVATEK ". In the period from September 2020 to February 2021, the Izhora Pipe Plant (ITZ, part of the Severstal Russian Steel division) shipped large diameter pipes (LDP) in the range of 530-1420 mm with a three-layer polyethylene coating with a wall thickness of 14 to 26 mm made of steel of strength category from K50 to K60. Within the framework of this tender, Severstal also supplied 40 tons of LDP with a diameter of 1020 mm and a wall thickness of 26 mm in a cold-resistant design with a minimum operating temperature of -52 degrees. This is a unique product that has no analogues in Russia. Even at such a low temperature, the metal retains its ductility, which is important for the operational reliability of the gas pipeline in regions with extremely low temperatures.

Severstal offers customers unique trading solutions for the construction of LNG plants based on the production capabilities and products manufactured by the enterprises that are part of the structure of the company. For the construction of Arctic LNG 2, Severstal supplies the widest range of products from fittings, hardware and large-diameter pipes to the most sophisticated unique equipment, replacing imported counterparts.

In St Petersburg, Linde Severstal, a joint venture with Germany's Linde, is currently producing a spiral-wound heat exchanger (liquefier) for the Arctic LNG 2 project. The spiral wound heat exchanger (SVTO) is a key piece of equipment in natural gas liquefaction and processing plants. At the end of 2019, a 300-ton winding machine was purchased at the enterprise, which allows winding operations for large-capacity heat exchangers, which include a spiral-wound heat exchanger for Arctic LNG 2.

For the construction of Arctic LNG 2, Severstal-metiz (the enterprise is part of the Severstal structure) supplies fasteners, steel shaped profiles and reinforcing strands. High-strength fasteners are produced by Orlovsky Steel Rolling Plant in cooperation with the partner company Parallel, which applies a special thermal diffusion coating to the fasteners to protect them from corrosion. OSPAZ fasteners are used for fastening metal structures.

Severstal Distribution (Severstal's distribution network) supplies A600C and A500 valves for the construction of the Arctic LNG 2 liquefied gas plant. The total volume of supplies, starting from 2019, has already amounted to 92.5 thousand tons.

The Arctic LNG 2 project provides for the construction of three technological lines for the production of liquefied natural gas with a capacity of 6.6 million tons per year each and stable gas condensate up to 1.6 million tons per year. The total capacity of the three lines will be 19.8 million tons of LNG per year. The project is based on an innovative construction concept using gravity-based foundations in order to reduce capital costs and minimize the environmental impact of the Arctic region of Russia. The launch of the first line is planned in 2023, the second and third - in 2024 and 2026, respectively.

Ørsted Hydrogen Plants Linked to SeaH2Land

'SeaH2Land' is an ambitious vision, linking GW-scale electrolysis to the large industrial demand in the Dutch-Flemish North Sea Port cluster through an envisaged regional cross-border pipeline. The green electricity required to produce the renewable hydrogen is proposed to come from the build-out of additional large-scale offshore wind. The major industrial companies in the region ArcelorMittal, Yara, Dow Benelux, and Zeeland Refinery, support the development of the required regional infrastructure to enable sustainably-produced steel, ammonia, ethylene, and fuels in the future, helping the Netherlands and Belgium to accelerate their carbon reductions towards 2030 and beyond. The SeaH2Land vision includes a renewable hydrogen production facility of 1 GW by 2030 to be developed by Ørsted. If realised, the electrolyser, which will produce the renewable hydrogen, can convert about 20 % of the current hydrogen consumption in the region to renewable hydrogen. With 580,000 tonnes per year, the North Sea Port cluster is one of the largest production and demand centres of fossil hydrogen in Europe today. Driven by decarbonisation efforts, industrial demand in the cluster could grow to about 1,000,000 tonnes by 2050, equivalent to roughly 10 GW of electrolysis.

Ørsted proposes to connect the GW electrolyser directly to a new 2 GW offshore wind farm in the Dutch North Sea. This will enable the large-scale supply of renewable electricity required for production of renewable hydrogen and fits well with the ambitions of the Dutch authorities for an accelerated offshore wind roll-out in line with increasing electricity demand. The offshore wind farm could be built in one of the zones in the southern part of the Dutch exclusive economic zone that has already been designated for offshore wind development.

The industrial players in the region, united in the Smart Delta Resources industry partnership, will continue the dialogue with TSOs for them to develop a regional open-access pipeline network of about 45 km, stretching across the North Sea Port area from Vlissingen-Oost (NL) to Gent (BE).

The GW electrolyser is proposed to link to the envisaged regional pipeline system connecting large-scale consumption and production in the cluster. Yara, in consortium with Ørsted, and Zeeland Refinery have each announced plans for mid-size renewable hydrogen production at their sites, while Dow has been exporting hydrogen to Yara since 2018 through the world's first conversion of a gas pipeline into hydrogen. The network can be extended further south to ArcelorMittal as a short-term no-regret and further north, underneath the river Scheldt, to Zeeland Refinery, as a crucial link to create a unique regional ecosystem of hydrogen exchange with significant carbon reduction in the manufacturing processes of ammonia, chemicals, and steel and a significant contribution to the European Green Deal.

Moreover, the cluster strategy proposes to extend the 380 kV high-voltage network for the electrification needs of the industry south of the river Scheldt. This would enable GW-sized electrolysis and offshore wind landing zones on both sides of the river, turning the cluster into a true energy hub.

Subject to a regulatory framework being in place, the regional network will unlock the first phase of SeaH2Land, which comprises 500 MW of electrolyser capacity. The second phase of SeaH2Land which scales the electrolyser capacity to 1 GW will require the possibility to connect to a national hydrogen backbone, providing additional flexibility and storage. Several locations north and south of the river Scheldt have been identified for GW-scale electrolysis. In the meantime, several projects are being developed in the region on the sites of industrial players, such as Zeeland Refinery's envisaged 150 MW electrolyser, which are also to be connected to the network.

41,11 0,45 1,11 % Euronext Amsterdam

Mr Gadkari Wows to Control Indian Steel & Cement Firms

Economic Times reported that Indian government is finding alternatives to reduce the use of cement and steel in highway construction in a bid to check rising costs and a committee has been formed in the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways to look at such alternatives and best international practices in construction. Transport Minister Mr Nitin Gadkari in an exclusive interview with ET told “They should be brought under control. I will write to the PM about this. If this continues, how will roads be built, how will we implement the PM Awas Yojana, how will MSMEs survive? The imbalance created by cement companies will not be tolerated. They are forming a cartel and increasing prices. MSMEs are facing trouble because of this.”

The minister is also considering approaching the Prime Minister to form a regulatory commission to rein in companies in these sectors.

Mr Gadkari has been raising concerns over steel price hikes. Mr Gadkari while speaking at a virtual event of Builders Association of India on 9 January 2021 had said “Regarding steel and cement, this is really a problem for all of us. Actually, I feel this is a cartel by some big people are doing in cement and steel. All the players in the steel industry have their own iron ore mines, and do not have to face any hikes in labour or power rates, why the steel industry has been hiking prices."

Mr Gadkari on 24 January had again highlighted the need to explore alternatives to steel as well as cement, for bringing down their prices. He had said "Steel prices have increased by 65% in the last six months. Steel and cement rates will reduce once cheaper alternatives are available.”

SSAB, LKAB & Vattenfall’s HYBRIT Project for H2 Storage in Lulea

SSAB, LKAB and Vattenfall have commenced building a rock cavern storage facility for fossil-free hydrogen gas on a pilot scale next to HYBRIT’s pilot facility for direct reduction in Lulea in North of Sweden. This is an important step in the development of a fossil-free value chain for fossil-free steel. The investment cost of just over SEK 250 million is divided equally across the holding companies and the Swedish Energy Agency, which provides support via Industriklivet. The 100 cubic metres hydrogen storage is being built in an enclosed rock cavern approximately 30 metres below ground. Building the storage facility underground provides opportunities to ensure the pressure required to store large amounts of energy in the form of hydrogen in a cost-effective way. The technology used is adapted to Scandinavian bedrock conditions and will now be developed further to handle the storage of hydrogen. The storage facility is being built according to the high safety requirements that apply and checked by the responsible authorities.

As part of the SSAB, LKAB and Vattenfall joint initiative HYBRIT, Hybrit Development AB is starting the construction of a hydrogen storage facility in Svartöberget to develop the technology for storage. Fossil-free hydrogen, which will replace coal and coke, is a crucial part of the production technique for fossil-free iron and steel production, where emissions of carbon dioxide will be virtually eliminated.

Hydrogen storages are predicted to play a very important role in future power and energy balancing, and in large-scale hydrogen production. The storage facility is expected to be ready and operational from 2022 until 2024.

Fossil-free hydrogen is central to the HYBRIT process. Hydrogen can be produced cost-effectively through the electrolysis of water using fossil-free electricity. The hydrogen produced by the electrolysers can be used immediately or stored for later use. The storage facility is based on proven technology and the hydrogen is used in the plant’s direct reduction reactor to remove oxygen from iron ore pellets. The fossil-free sponge iron resulting from the process is then used as a raw material in the manufacture of fossil-free steel.

REvil Leaks Drawings after Ransom Refusal by Tata Steel

TechNadu reported that Tata Steel suffered a cyber attack by the REvil group and drawings are already leaked. The REvil/Sodinokibi group has reportedly attempted to extort USD 4 million from Tata Steel after the hackers managed to compromise the firm’s systems. The victim rejected the prospect to negotiate with the hackers, so no ransoms were paid. Based on what can be deduced from the published data on the actors’ site, they were unsuccessful in this effort as the Mumbai-based steelmaker hasn’t given in to the demands and refused to make the slightest negotiation for a resolution. This has inevitably resulted in the first leaks of sensitive files on the REvil portal, and the files posted there appear to be related to steel plant in Odisha. The encryption has allegedly taken place on March 25, 2021

With the aid of KELA, TechNadu was able to see technical drawings of production line machines that are marked as “Confidential,” so they’re clearly not intended for publication. This potentially means REvil doesn’t have much hope in seeing any positive development in their negotiation efforts, and they’re immediately letting valuable stuff out.

However, the initial ransom has already been doubled once, so it’s been set to the equivalent of USD 8 million in crypto currency Monero. There’s no other doubling step, so the next phase involves publishing the sample files on the media and the selling of the rest of the exfiltrated files to various hackers or interested buyers.

REvil has been especially active recently, so there must be multiple skilful affiliates working for the ransom ware group right now. Only three days ago, the French PCB maker ‘Asteelflash’ was added to Sodinokibi’s victim list, facing a ransom of no less than USD 24 million.

Zekelman ERW Pipe Mill at Atlas Tube to Start in September

Zekelman Industries announced the completion of exterior building work on its new mill in Blytheville in Arkansas, constructed for its Atlas Tube division. Foundation work has begun, and the mill is slated to start rolling in September 2021. Located next to one of Atlas Tube's existing mills, this high-tech, 515,000-square-foot facility will be the largest continuous electric resistance welding mill in the world, rolling HSS from 8 inch to 22 inch square. Rounds will be available up to 28 inch OD, and rectangles up to 34 inch x 10 inch, with wall thicknesses up to 1 inch. The facility will feature cutting-edge engineering that will give it industry-leading capabilities, including new welding technology designed to handle the 1 inch thick sections. Quick change technology will give the mill the shortest cycle times in the industry, and the line will feed into a fully automated warehouse, cutting down delivery times and boosting efficiency.

Zekelman Industries had selected SMS group as partner and main supplier for a complete new 28 inch ERW tube welding line to be installed at its Atlas Tube structural tube division in May 2019. With the new 28-inch electric resistance welding line, Zekelmann Industries will be installing the biggest continuous line in the world, capable to produce more than 400,000 tons per year and thus extending its product range and sizes.

The key aspect of the design and layout development of the new line are the highest requirements for quality and production output. The computer-controlled SMS group CSS Quicksetting system ensures that the rolls can be adjusted automatically to their working positions after the size change. Further to an operational speed reaching 35 meters per minute, the line offers superior diameter/wall thickness ratio capability which, along with a quick product change-over time, results in great product flexibility.

Currently, the largest HSS rolled in the US are 16 inch x 16 inch x 5/8 inch, and builders looking for bigger sizes need to have them shipped from overseas. That means long lead times and unpredictable delivery schedules, making large HSS sizes less appealing in domestic construction. With Atlas Tube's new mill, all sizes will be available for order with 2- to 4-week lead times, the shortest in the industry, as well as from floor stock at service center partners across North America.

The new larger sizes will be ideal for applications like bridges, warehouses, stadiums and highways signage, taking advantage of the unbeatable efficiency and strength-to-weight ratios HSS can offer. And with short, predictable lead times, builders and designers can count on the weight- and cost-savings HSS bring to construction without worrying about international shipping issues.
