Primetals to Supply EAF & Expand Slab Caster Capacity for Tosyali

Turkish steel producer Tosyali Demir Celik Sanayi AS has placed an additional order with Primetals Technologies to supply an additional, second EAF Quantum electric arc furnace with a capacity of two million metric tons of liquid steel per year, and to expand the production capacity of a recently ordered two-strand slab caster to 3.4 million tonnes per year. The new order follows an order placed in 2020, which encompassed a first EAF quantum electric arc furnace, a twin vacuum-degassing plant with oxygen blowing, and the original version of a two-strand slab caster. All plants will be erected at a flat steel greenfield project in of Tosyali in Iskenderun, Turkey. Commissioning is expected for late 2022.

Tosyali Demir Celik AS is part of the Tosyali Group, which already operates another steel plant named TOSCELIK in Osmaniye, Turkey as well as a DRI direct hot-charge melting plant in Algeria named Tosyali Iron Steel Industry Algerie. The company also runs a number of rolling mills and is well established in the markets for flat products and welded pipes. In order to increase their capacity of semi-finished products like slabs for the existing downstream facilities, Tosyali Holding decided to set up a new greenfield facility in Iskenderun, Hatay Province.

The new EAF Quantum, as well as the one ordered in 2020, are designed to handle metallic scrap and virgin materials such as HBI, pig iron in different composition and quality. The electrical energy requirement of the electric arc furnace is extremely low, mainly thanks to the scrap preheating system, but also due to many other features of EAF Quantum technology, such as FAST Tapping system, continuous foaming slag and continuous submerged electric arc (Flat bath operation). This reduces both the operating costs and the CO2 emissions. The EAF Quantum is a highly productive furnace that will reach lowest of possible power off times. The twin vacuum-degassing plant provides further treatment and steel quality to the production portfolio of Tosyali Demir Celik. With oxygen blowing possibility Tosyali Demir Celik steel plant will be ready to produce steel grades starting from ULC grades up to high carbon grades, peritectic grades, API grades, dual phase grades and also high strength low alloyed steel grades. The two-strand continuous slab caster will provide a capacity of 3.4 million tons of slabs per year and is able to process a wide range of steel grades.

The EAF Quantum developed by Primetals Technologies combines proven elements of shaft furnace technology with an innovative scrap charging process, an efficient preheating system, a new tilting concept for the lower shell, and an optimized tapping system. This all adds up to very short melting cycles. The electricity consumption is considerably lower than that of a conventional electric arc furnace. Together with the lower consumption of electrodes and oxygen, this gives an overall advantage in the specific conversion cost of around 20 percent. In comparison to conventional electric arc furnaces, total CO2 emissions can also be reduced by up to 30 percent per metric ton of crude steel. An integrated dedusting system with modern automatic off gas control fulfills all environmental requirements.

The slab caster has a machine radius of ten meters. The caster produces slabs with a thickness of 225 millimetres in widths ranging from 900 to 1,800 millimetres. The production capacity increase from two to 3.4 million metric tons per year will be achieved by adding additional segments. The maximum casting speed is 2.6 meters per minute. The plant casts ultra-low carbon to high carbon steels, peritectic, and HSLA steels, as well as API grades. The straight cassette-type Smart Mold is equipped with the Mold Expert breakout detection system, DynaWidth for automatic width adjustment, and the DynaFlex mold oscillator. LevCon automatic mold-level-control system with "autostart" casting functions and auto-adaptive dynamic bulging compensation and the Mold Expert on-line automatic breakout pre-detection will also be implemented. Bender and Smart Segments as well as I-Star rollers are used in the strand-guiding system. The Dynacs 3D secondary cooling system dynamically calculates and controls the temperature profile along the entire strand. DynaGap Soft Reduction 3D is used to improve the interior quality of the slabs. The roll gap is dynamically adjusted during the final solidification in accordance with the operating points calculated by Dynacs. This minimizes segregation in the center of the strand.

Cumbria to Put Statue of Sir Henry Bessemer at Workington Station

The News & Star reported that Cumbria County Council in the North West of England plans to put up a sculpture outside Workington railway station heralding the achievements of steel-making pioneer Sir Henry Bessemer. Cumbria County Council stated “The proposal is quite straightforward in that it is the installation of an existing statue. With recent and upcoming heritage projects being undertaken at the station, it became clear that this would be an ideal location and an opportune period to install the sculpture. The proposed location for the statue has been chosen because it is in the locality of the former steelworks site and therefore fits in with the historic and thematic context. It ties in with the current Rails around the World project which celebrates the Workington steel industry. Installing the statue at this site will ensure that it is enjoyed by both local residents and visitors.”

The Bessemer Stone sculpture was commissioned by Allerdale Borough Councillor Marjorie Rae in order to celebrate one of the steel industry’s key figures and the historic importance of Workington as a producer of steel. The original proposed location was near the centre of Workington, as part of a KFC fast food restaurant development that was being built in the vicinity of the former steel works. However, the sculpture instead remained in storage with Cumbria County Council for several years.

The sculpture was created by renowned local sculptor Mr Shawn Williamson from locally sourced hard carboniferous limestone, the same stone used in the Bessemer process.

Sir Henry Bessemer was an important figure in the steel industry, most notably as the inventor of the Bessemer process, the first inexpensive industrial process for the mass-production of steel from molten pig iron. Sir Henry Bessemer worked on the problem of manufacturing cheap steel for ordnance production from 1850 to 1855 when he patented his method. On 24 August 1856 Bessemer first described the process to a meeting of the British Association in Cheltenham which he titled The Manufacture of Malleable Iron and Steel without Fuel. The Bessemer process involved using oxygen in air blown through molten pig iron to burn off the impurities and thus create steel.

Basic oxygen steelmaking, also known as Linz–Donawitz-steelmaking or the oxygen converter process is a method of primary steelmaking in which carbon-rich molten pig iron is made into steel is a refined version of the Bessemer converter where blowing of air is replaced with blowing oxygen.

SMS Closed Die Forging Line Starts at Ningbo Xusheng Auto

Chinese automotive supplier Ningbo Xusheng Auto Technology Co Ltd has issued the Final Acceptance Certificate to SMS group for the new, fully automatic closed die forging line installed at the company’s Ningbo location in the Chinese province of Zhejiang. The forging line supplied by SMS group consists of an MP 2500 eccentric forging press and, as a pre-forming unit, an automatic forging roll. The eccentric press operates with a maximum press force of 25 MN. Ningbo Xusheng Auto Technology uses the new line for the production of chassis components in aluminium, especially for electric vehicles.

With support of a specific simulation software, SMS group cooperated with Ningbo Xusheng to jointly develop the technology and the dies for the aluminium forging process. Excellent mechanical properties and a uniform microstructure of the aluminium forgings are indispensable requirements to guarantee the safety of mass-produced automobile chassis parts.

The new line produces high-quality aluminium forgings in maximum cycle times of five seconds. Massive forming of aluminium requires processing within a very narrow temperature window. Therefore, all process steps must be perfectly coordinated and aligned with one another. The forging roll pre-forms heated stock into a predetermined shape applying a nominal rolling force of 1,250 kN. Thanks to the optimal distribution of material within the forging, this pre-forming step enhances material efficiency in the subsequent forging operation significantly. In the fully automatic press, the stock goes through several forging sequences. The components are precisely handled by an automatic electric walking-beam system – which was also part of the SMS group supply.

Specifically for Ningbo Xusheng, SMS group developed a function-optimized spray lubrication system. Three newly designed, 3D-printed spray heads markedly enhance the effectiveness and reliability of die lubrication. Thanks to the possibilities provided by 3D printing, the spray nozzles inside the spray heads are arranged in a way that guarantees perfect lubrication of all die contours.

Ningbo Xusheng has been active in the mass production and marketing of specific aluminium die castings, among others for the automotive industry. The company supplies its products to well-known international customers. Now the new forging line from SMS enables Ningbo Xusheng to expand its production capacities and also serve the growing market for high-end forged aluminium components.

thyssenkrupp Celebrates Centenary of Uhde

The Chemical & Process Technologies business unit of thyssenkrupp Industrial Solutions AG is celebrating a milestone in 2021. It is one hundred years since engineer and entrepreneur Friedrich Uhde laid the foundation stone for a global success story on April 6, 1921. Now, in this centenary year, the origins of the firm are to become visible in its name again: thyssenkrupp is changing the business unit’s name to thyssenkrupp Uhde. Uhde is a protected brand name that resonates across the global engineering sector to this day. Sami Pelkonen, CEO Chemical & Process Technologies / thyssenkrupp Uhde said “For 100 years, the name Uhde has stood for innovation, quality, and reliability. It makes me particularly proud that our core technologies – such as ammonia synthesis together with water electrolysis – can now, with green hydrogen and green ammonia, make a key contribution to a sustainable future. So it’s really fitting that we’ll shortly be known as thyssenkrupp Uhde again.”

Friedrich Uhde set up his engineering firm in Dortmund-Bövinghausen – in fact in a barn on his parents-in-law’s farm. Operating in an extremely challenging sector, this small local “start-up” was soon to grow into a global player. Today employing around 4,500 people worldwide, the company has stayed true to its roots and remains headquartered in Dortmund.

After its foundation in 1921, the company soon began to focus on ammonia synthesis, and fertilizer plants remain one of its main areas of business. The enterprise quickly expanded. In 1930 a subsidiary was established for high-pressure technologies which as part of thyssenkrupp now go by the name Uhde High Pressure Technologies. In 1952 the then Uhde GmbH was acquired by Hoechst AG and in 1996 by Krupp AG, which merged into thyssenkrupp in 1999. In 2014 it was combined with other plant engineering businesses to form thyssenkrupp Industrial Solutions. The core of the former Uhde company is now the Chemical & Process Technologies business unit.

The first ammonia plant using the Mont-Cenis-Uhde process went into operation in 1928 and had a production capacity of 100 tons per day. Today the company can build plants with capacities of up to 5,000 tpd. Using “green hydrogen” produced by water electrolysis with renewable energy, the entire process is virtually CO2-free. “Green ammonia” is then made from green hydrogen in combination with nitrogen, which is simply captured from the atmosphere. So no fossil raw materials are involved at all. Ammonia is not only a base chemical, e.g. for the production of fertilizers, it is also a very good liquid energy carrier and it can be used as a climate-friendly marine fuel. This means green energy from sunny and windy regions or from hydropower can be transported over long distances and subsequently reconverted or used as a chemical feedstock.

To make “green hydrogen”, water electrolysis technology from thyssenkrupp Uhde Chlorine Engineers offers everything needed for the industrial-scale production of hydrogen from renewable energy. The company is a joint venture with Industrie De Nora and world market leader in industrial-scale electrolysis – originating from Uhde’s electrolysis business. tk UCE’s established technology and supply chain together with experience gained from several hundred electrolysis plants is now being used successfully for water electrolysis.

thyssenkrupp Uhde offers further future technologies for the climate turnaround. They include leading processes for carbon capture and utilization, e.g. for the production of methanol or synthetic natural gas. EnviNOx technology for the reduction of emissions from nitric acid plants already saves more than 15 million metric tons of CO2 equivalents per year. Uhde also offers processes for the recycling of plastics and the production of PLA bioplastics.

Aggressive Creditors Threaten Steel Jobs in UK – Mr Gupta

CityAM reported that GFG Alliance Chairman Mr Sanjeev Gupta has hit out at that the aggressive tactics of his steel empire’s creditors are putting tens of thousands of jobs at risk. He wrote in the Times “Financial institutions with investments connected to Greensill are now trying to bring claims against us. We will of course robustly defend our legal position, including in the courts if necessary. Our clear priority must be to protect the long-term future of our people and local communities. These creditors are at risk of destroying their own chance of recouping value by taking these knee-jerk actions. They undermine profitable businesses and ultimately put at risk thousands of skilled, industrial jobs in communities with limited alternative employment opportunities. They are also damaging the resilience, profitability and environmental performance of UK businesses which rely on our steel and aluminium products, and are critical to the wider UK economy.”

He added “We have our challenges, and perhaps the greatest here in the UK, where our businesses have faced a dramatic squeeze from the aerospace and automotive markets, where demand for some products has fallen by as much as 60% through Brexit, Covid-19 and now Greensill.”

GFG Alliance, which employs 35,000 people around the world including 5,000 people in the UK, is in the process of negotiating replacement funding with new backers.

UK’s Steel Exports to EU Shrink after Brexit

The Mirror reported that according to trade body UK Steel data, British steel exports to the EU have plunged by a third to just under 420,000 tonnes in the first three months of 2021, as against quarterly average of 630,000 tonnes in 2015-2017, as the British steel sector grappled with Brexit realities. UK’s steel exports, excluding tubes, wire and cold finished bars, showed a 38% drop in the first three months of 2021 as compared with the 2015-2017 average. UK Steel director-general Mr Gareth Stace said “This is a challenging time for the UK steel sector as it does its utmost to adapt to challenging new trading conditions and recover from the impacts of Covid-19. This first quarter of export data demonstrates quite how challenging market conditions are for the sector at this time and the new barriers now in place between us and our largest export market. We are confident that some of these export difficulties will lessen as time goes on, but unfortunately many will be a permanent feature of our new trading relationship with the EU.”

Mr Stace called on the Government to take all possible steps to ensure that goods moving into Europe are able to move to customers swiftly and seamlessly. He demanded clarity around the tariffs and quotas our steelmakers face when exporting into Northern Ireland, which remains in a customs no-man's-land at the present time.”

He added “We must find a resolution to the movement of steel across the Irish Sea as quickly as possible.”

Under Mr Boris Johnson’s deal, formally known as Trade and Cooperation Agreement, UK exports of steel are subject to quotas and possible tariffs as a result of Brussels measures. British steel exporters used an average of just 59% of their quotas in the first quarter.

Opposition Parties Demand Details of Minister Dinner with Mr Gupta

The Courier reported that Scottish National Party’s Cabinet Secretary for Rural Economy and Tourism Mr Fergus Ewing’s unrecorded dinner at a posh Cail Bruich restaurant in Glasgow’s west end in 2017 with steel tycoon Mr Sanjeev Gupta, Australian banker Mr Lex Greensill, former GAM fund manager Mr Tim Haywood and GFG Alliance’s Chief Investment Officer Mr Jay Hambro has sparked calls for an investigation into whether he broke the ministerial code. Scottish Labour insists that the lack of any official record of the meeting and no correspondence about it for a month either side of the dinner’s date requires serious explaining from Mr Ewing. Scottish Labour economy spokeswoman Ms Monica Lennon told The Sunday Mail “What on earth was a Cabinet minister doing having a cosy dinner at a posh West End restaurant without any officials present when government business was clearly on the agenda. Why can no record of any communications concerning the dinner be found. Are we to believe it was arranged telepathically? It is beyond belief that there are no official records of the meeting at all beyond the notes taken by the businessman in attendance. And it’s crucial that this is not brushed under the carpet and that we get a full explanation because the fallout for the people of Scotland is potentially catastrophic. Over GBP 350 million which could have been spent on hospitals, schools and public services could simply disappear. Mr Fergus Ewing has some serious explaining to do over this dinner and there needs to be an investigation into whether the ministerial code of conduct has been adhered to.”

Scottish Liberal Democrats Member of the Scottish Parliament for North East Fife Mr Willie Rennie called for an independent investigation into potential breaches and said “The collapse of Greensill has exposed a shady network of backroom deals across the Scottish and UK Governments. I’m completely unsurprised that there are no records from this meeting by now it are clear that this is the SNP’s standard mode of operation.”

Scottish Greens Member of the Scottish Parliament for Mid Scotland and Fife (Region) Mr Mark Ruskell said “It’s quite shocking that this senior Cabinet minister seems to think he doesn’t have to ensure notes are taken at important meetings.”

A Freedom of Information request by the Sunday Mail has revealed Mr Ewing had no officials with him, no notes were taken, and the Scottish Government claims to have no emails, texts or phone records about the meeting. The code states “A private secretary or official should be present for all discussions relating to government business, with the basic facts of formal meetings to be recorded, including the reasons for the meeting, attendees and the interests represented. If ministers meet external organisations or individuals and find themselves discussing official business without an official present, for example, at a party conference, social occasion or on holiday, any significant content such as substantive issues relating to government decisions or contracts should be passed back to their private offices as soon as possible after the event, who should arrange for the basic facts of such meetings to be recorded.”

According to the Sunday Mail, the Scottish Government response to the FOI said “The themes of discussion were recorded by Mr Gupta’s company, GFG Alliance, and reported a positive relationship focused on derisking both parties while maximising plans for growth at the Lochaber smelter and hydro.”

Digital Platforms as well as Channel Networks would be established to collect scrap from various segments such as Households, Industries & End-of-Life-Vehicles. The scrap would be processed through mechanised equipment viz. Shredder, Shear, Baler etc and the high quality processed scrap would be supplied to EAFs, IFs & Foundries for downstream Steel making, satiating their long standing demand.
