Bam turns to ex-Kier boss for help while it seeks new CEO
18 Feb 2020 By David Price
Former Kier boss Paul Sheffield will provide assistance to Royal Bam’s interim CEO while the company seeks a permanent replacement.
The Dutch contractor announced yesterday that chief financial officer Frans den Houter would take over as interim CEO while a replacement for current boss Rob van Wingerden was found. Van Wingerden will step down in April after almost six years in charge of the company. Sheffield, who currently sits on the Dutch contractor’s board, has been delegated to support the executive committee while the CFO takes on the additional work. A spokesman for Bam said den Houter “welcomes” the help and advice that Sheffield can offer.
The firm has major interests in the UK with its Bam Construct and Bam Nuttall subsidiaries.
Sheffield joined Bam’s supervisory board, equivalent to a non-executive position, in 2017. He was previously CEO of Kier from 2010 to 2014, when he was replaced by Haydn Mursell, and then oversaw Laing O’Rourke’s European and Middle East construction business until 2017. Last November, Sheffield was named president of the Institution of Civil Engineers.
Bam's latest accounts, for the year ending 31 December 2018, showed Sheffield was the second highest paid member on Bam's supervisory board, earning €69,000 (£57,448). Only chairman, Harri Noy, received more at €80,000 (£66,607). The company had not confirmed whether Sheffield would receive additional remuneration for his new advisory role before this article went live.
