The Netherlands will donate 2,000 bicycles to Ukraine

Dutch Stichting Zeilen Van Vrijheid (the Sails of Freedom Foundation) will hand over 2,000 bikes to Ukraine. The Amsterdam city bike depot intends to gift these cycles to this nonprofit organization, Dutch media report.

This Stichting Zeilen Van Vrijheid delivers emergency vehicles, medical supplies, and equipment to Ukraine. The foundation has donated over 75 ambulances, 80 tonnes of medical supplies, and 12 support vehicles so far, but the ongoing war has left Ukraine with a severe fuel crisis.

Medical workers and volunteers have an almost impossible task of helping people when they lack the transport to reach them, Dutchreview reports. Founder of organization Veronika Mutsei first realized the importance of bikes when she was met with ambulances full of supplies and no fuel to take them anywhere.

And so, the project seeks to distribute the collected bicycles to areas where they are needed the most. It will ensure that medicine, food, and basic supplies can reach people, even without fuel.

Inwoners van Melitopol vrezen oproep door Russisch leger
Oekraïense bewoners van de door Rusland bezette stad Melitopol vrezen dat ze binnenkort worden opgeroepen voor het Russische leger. Dat heeft de verbannen burgemeester Ivan Fedorov van de stad vandaag gezegd. "Onze inwoners raken in paniek", aldus Fedorov. "Ze weten niet wat er morgen zal gebeuren."

Melitopol ligt in de Zuid-Oekraïense provincie Zaporizja, een van de vier gebieden waarin tot en met morgen referenda plaatsvinden over aansluiting bij Rusland. Kort na het begin van de invasie in Oekraïne viel de stad in handen van de Russen. Fedorov denkt dat de belangrijkste reden voor de huidige referenda is om het Russische leger in staat te stellen de lokale bevolking onder de wapenen te roepen.

Volgens Fedorov werden sommige inwoners tijdens het stemmen voor het referendum onder schot gehouden. "Mensen worden door Russische soldaten op straat gegrepen en gedwongen om te stemmen, niet alleen voor zichzelf maar voor hun hele gezin", aldus Fedorov.

Russia’s Tass news agency is carrying some additional quotes from Hungary’s prime minister Viktor Orbán, in which he suggests he will hold a national consultation in Hungary on whether the EU should continue sanctions against Russia. It quotes Orbán saying:

The sanctions were introduced in an undemocratic way, because it was the decision of the bureaucrats in Brussels, for which the European people are paying. We need to know the opinion of the people. For the first time in Europe, in Hungary, we will ask for the opinion about sanctions. National consultations will be launched, within which the Hungarian people will be able to express their opinion whether they support them and whether they are in favour of introducing new ones.

Tass reports that Orbán stressed he was in favour of “immediate peace talks and a ceasefire” between Ukraine and the Russian forces that invaded the country on 24 February.

In Oest-Ilimsk, een plaats in Jakoetië, diep in Siberië, opende een man van 25 het vuur op een rekruteringskantoor van het leger waar een aantal mannen die een oproep hadden gekregen zich hadden verzameld. De officier raakte zwaar gewond. Volgens de moeder van de dader, die na het incident werd gearresteerd, was hij woedend omdat een vriend van hem een oproep had gekregen om in Oekraïne te gaan vechten hoewel hij nooit in het leger had gediend. De mobilisatie zou officieel alleen gelden voor mensen die in dienst waren geweest.

Sinds Poetin vorige week plotseling de mobilisatie van een deel van de Russische reservisten afkondigde, is er al bij zeventien rekruteringskantoren brand gesticht, kennelijk om de registers te vernietigen. In tal van steden gingen mensen de straat op om tegen de mobilisatie te protesteren.

De demonstraties spelen zich vooral af in afgelegen gebieden, zoals het zuidelijke Dagestan en Boerjatië, een armoedige deelrepubliek aan de grens met Mongolië. Dagestan staat boven aan de lijst met volgens officiële cijfers de meeste gesneuvelde militairen, gevolgd door Boerjatië. De onvrede wordt nog eens aangewakkerd doordat soldaten die bij gebrek aan werk een tijdelijk contract met het leger hebben gesloten, nu te horen hebben gekregen dat zij voor onbepaalde tijd in dienst moeten blijven.

Het lijkt erop dat de autoriteiten vooral haast zetten achter de mobilisatie in afgelegen streken, mogelijk om protesten in de grote steden waar weinig steun voor de oorlog is zo veel mogelijk te voorkomen. In Boerjatië worden mannen soms van de straat geplukt en meegenomen naar rekruteringskantoren in afwachting van hun vertrek naar Oekraïne.

Lyman, A Supply Hub In Eastern Ukraine, Is The Last Place A Russian Soldier Wants To Be Right Now

The Oskil River, running north to south from Russia all the way to the Donets River in eastern Ukraine, is a natural defensive barrier.

So it made sense that, when a dozen eager Ukrainian brigades punched through fragile Russian lines outside the free city of Kharkiv the first week of September, the Russians retreated 30 miles east across the river.

If the Russian army weren’t exhausted from seven months of combat against an increasingly inventive and determined foe—and if the Kremlin hadn’t raided units in the east in order to reinforce the south, where a second Ukrainian counteroffensive also is underway—the Oskil defensive line might’ve held.

It didn’t. Now a key Russian supply hub is in danger farther to the south: the town of Lyman.

After crossing the Oskil, the Ukrainians kept right on pushing. Today, they hold at least five bridgeheads on the east side of the river.

Yes, the Kremlin has announced a nationwide mobilization and chaotically is drafting into army service potentially 300,000 men. No, these draftees won’t arrive in time—or, given the utter lack of training, in any condition—to save the Russian position east of the Oskil.

And that has huge implications for Russia’s hold on the northern part of Luhansk Oblast, which since 2014 has been under the control of pro-Russian separatists—and which now is subject to a sham “referendum” that purports to make the oblast officially part of Russia.

The Ukrainians are on the move across eastern Ukraine. Three prongs of their counteroffensive are poised to surround and cut off the Russian garrison in Lyman, a key railway hub through which rolls much of the supply for the Russian army in the east.

Russian forces east of Kharkiv now are falling back to a new defensive line threading a valley running from the town of Svatove in the north to Kremmina in the south, 25 miles away. A valley, surrounded on both sides by high ground, isn’t exactly a strong position for any defender.

The Russian air force in recent days has dialed up its sortie rate in the east in a desperate bid to save the beleaguered Russian ground forces, but stiff Ukrainian air-defenses have blunted the impact of these air ops. The Ukrainians shot down four Russian jets on Saturday alone.

The likeliest question now isn’t whether the Ukrainians capture Lyman, but when. Separate Ukrainian forces are rolling north across the Donets from positions east of Lyman, north across the same river from positions west of Lyman and east across the Oskil from positions north of Lyman.

The northern gambit might be the most catastrophic for the Russians, as it’s a wide enough envelopment that it could cut off several battalions with thousands of troops. Or even more troops if the Kremlin manages to shove reinforcements into the area.

Mike Martin, a fellow at the Department of War Studies at King's College in London, is betting on the latter. “Lyman looks like the old bait-and-switch,” he tweeted. “Drive flanks north and east of Lyman, causing the Russians to reinforce this critical railroad junction. Then drive a much bigger encircling movement to trap the whole lot.”

Russia grants citizenship to Edward Snowden

The former NSA contractor and whistleblower was previously given permanent residency by the Russian government in 2020.

Russian President Vladimir Putin granted citizenship to former US security contractor Edward Snowden on Monday.

Putin signed a decree offering Snowden citizenship, making him one of 75 foreign nationals to have been offered the path to citizenship by Russia.

The decree was published on Russia's government website.

Snowden, a former contractor with the US National Security Agency, has been living in Russia since 2013. He was given permanent residency in Russia in 2020, and said at the time that he planned to apply for Russian citizenship.

It is not clear if Snowden has renounced his US citizenship.

Snowden was responsible for one the most significant leaks in US political history in 2013, when he revealed data about classified surveillance programs of the US National Security Agency.

Het Kremlin zei maandag dat er geen beslissingen zijn genomen over het sluiten van de Russische grenzen. Ondertussen proberen vele mannen het land te verlaten, om zo de mobilisatie te kunnen ontlopen. In een gesprek met verslaggevers erkende Kremlin-woordvoerder Dmitry Peskov ook dat sommige mobilisatie-oproepen ten onrechte waren verstuurd en dat fouten zouden worden gecorrigeerd. Dat meldt Reuters.

Vliegtickets voor buitenlandse vluchten uit Moskou zeer prijzig, drukte aan grenzen

Russen die de komende dagen nog naar een buitenlandse bestemming willen vliegen, moeten daarvoor diep in de buidel tasten. De ticketprijzen voor een directe vlucht liggen tussen de 800 en 12.000 euro voor een enkele reis. Dat blijkt uit een analyse van beschikbare gegevens en prijzen op Google Flights, een site waarop beschikbare vluchtopties worden bijgehouden.

Veel westerse landen hebben hun luchtruim vanwege de internationale sancties tegen Rusland gesloten. Het aantal directe bestemmingen vanuit Moskou is daardoor een stuk beperkter dan voor het uitbreken van de oorlog in Oekraïne. Vanuit de Russische hoofdstad zijn in de laatste dagen van september alleen tickets beschikbaar naar enkele Turkse steden als Istanbul en Antalya, Dubai in de Verenigde Arabische Emiraten, steden in de Kaukasus en bestemmingen in Centraal-Azië. Wel zijn deze tickets veel duurder dan normaal. De kosten voor een enkele reis naar de Armeense hoofdstad Jerevan lopen op tot zo'n 11.000 euro en een enkeltje naar een bestemming in Centraal-Azië gaat voor 1000 tot 4000 euro weg.

Vorige week maakte de Russische president Poetin bekend ruim 300.000 reservisten te willen rekruteren om te vechten in Oekraïne. Als gevolg daarvan zou de drukte bij grensovergangen van Russische buurlanden die per auto bereikbaar zijn flink zijn toegenomen. Armenië en Georgië meldden eerder al massale aankomsten van Russen die per auto de grens over willen steken. Aan de grens met Georgië zou de wachttijd volgens Russisch media zijn opgelopen naar 48 uur. Deze bestemmingen zijn vooral populair omdat Russen in deze landen geen visum nodig hebben.

Ook Finse grenswachten spraken afgelopen vrijdag van een ruime verdubbeling van het verkeer vanuit Rusland. Zeker 17.000 Russen zouden daar de grens zijn overgegaan. Bij de grens van Mongolië werden volgens mediaberichten ook lange rijen opgemerkt.
