Chinese tallest building reduces height due to safety concerns - Report

Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture won the competition back in 2010 to design China's tallest, and the world's 4th tallest, building. The supertall was originally designed to reach 126 floors, however construction halted in August last year stopping at the 96th floor. The height reduction is due to safety concerns with the expansion of the city's air transit hub completed in 2017.

The original 126 floors would now be in the path of planes approaching the Tianhe International Airport. The building will now only reach 1,640 feet making it China’s fifth-tallest.

Geely building new plant in Ningbo to produce bigger cars- Report

Money Control quoted two people familiar with the matter as saying that China's Geely is building a new plant to produce a quarter of a million bigger-sized cars that it expects will power future growth and help meet its goal of selling more than 2 million vehicles by 2020. Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co, one of China's five biggest automakers and the owner of Sweden's Volvo Cars, is building the facility in the eastern port city of Ningbo where it already operates an assembly plant The planned capacity increase underscores its ambitions as well as the shift in customer preferences towards bigger vehicles such as SUVs and minivans in China, the world's biggest auto market. The new capacity will enable Geely to produce roughly 250,000 more cars a year in Ningbo and add larger cars to its lineup, as well as ramp up launches at its new brand Lynk & Co, which Geely came up jointly with Volvo. The plant will have two assembly lines. The automaker plans to spend CNY 3.4 billion (USD 498 million) for one of them. The overall investment planned for the plant was not immediately known.

Once known for its cheaper, copycat designs and shoddy quality, Geely has assumed upmarket aspirations after the Volvo deal and has expanded sales significantly since 2016 by banking on smaller, so called compact cars.

China Harbour start construction of new terminal in Sokhna Port

Xinhua reported that China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) started the main phase of the construction of a new terminal basin in Sokhna Port south of the Suez Canal northeast of Egypt. The project was assigned to CHEC by the Sokhna branch of the Emirati corporation DP World, the main investor and container operator in the port located at the Gulf of Suez. At a launching ceremony, CHEC said it will deliver the "Basin 2" project in fewer than 12 months ahead of the deadline. Chen Shuang, deputy director of CHEC marketing department, told Xinhua at the construction site "This event is to show our determination to finish the project quickly and with high quality."

Sokhna Port is located within the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone), a main economic region in Egypt whose development is one of the country's mega projects to attract foreign investments for further economic growth. The initiative, proposed in 2013, refers to the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road. It aims at building a trade and infrastructure network connecting Asia with Europe and Africa along the ancient Silk Road trade routes.

Mr Mahfouz Taha, SCZone vice chairman, hailed CHEC as "one of the largest and most remarkable port builders and designers in the world," eyeing further cooperation with the Chinese side in the economic zone in the light of China's Belt and Road (B&R) Initiative.

Mr Ajayy Kumar Singh, CEO of DP World Sokhna, said CHEC agreed to deliver the project in 2019 and he is confident of its ability. Mr Singh said that "CHEC is one of the leading operators in building ports. We're happy to partner with them in this Basin 2 project. We're quite hopeful that they will deliver the project much ahead of the target date." He said his company selected CHEC from many bidders to carry out the project after it met all the strict specifications set by DP World.

DNV GL advises on China first HVDC offshore wind substation

DNV GL, the world’s largest resource of independent energy experts and certification body, announced that it has been contracted to provide technical advisory support on feasibility studies for the first-ever, high-voltage direct current offshore wind substation in China. China has committed heavily to developing its offshore wind-power capacity. It currently plans to have 5 GW of offshore wind power installed by 2020 and in 2017 alone it installed almost 1.2 GW of offshore wind capacity. This brought the cumulative total installed capacity to nearly 2.8 GW, third globally behind the United Kingdom and Germany.

However, the country is now faced by the challenge that all the promising wind farm sites within 10 km of the shore have already been exploited. To boost capacity further and meet the 2020 target, China is having to explore locations that are further offshore. To this end, Huadong Engineering Corporation is planning a ground-breaking 1.1 GW offshore windfarm some 90 km off the coast of Jiangsu Province in eastern China.

Traditional submarine high-voltage alternating current (HVAC) cables become extremely inefficient when transporting large amounts of electricity over such long distances. In contrast, high-voltage direct current systems allow power to be transmitted over large distances under the sea with minimal losses. A key stage in the new project will be the creation of an offshore HVDC transmission system to export offshore power from the wind farm to the mainland, including offshore HVDC converter station, submarine cables and onshore HVDC converter station.

Mr William Pan, Head of Offshore Wind APAC, DNV GL – Energy said that “Comparing with onshore HVDC technology, offshore wind HVDC has unique specification and requires to combine both offshore wind and HVDC technology on the limited space, to satisfy safety and function requirement. DNV GL is very glad to work with the customer on this HVDC milestone project and accelerate the local offshore wind industry development with extensive offshore wind experiences.”

Chinese aluminum capital Binzhou plans new high-end projects

Reuters reported that the city of Binzhou in eastern China’s Shandong province, home to top aluminum producer China Hongqiao Group, is planning five new projects to support development of a high-end aluminum industry. The projects include a 10,000 tonne-per-year (tpy) aluminum alloy plant to be built by Huachuang Metal. A second aluminum alloy project, with unspecified capacity, is to be built by Hangqiao Technology to target the automotive and aerospace industries. A third, built by Yangxin Taihe New Material, will make aluminum formwork used in construction. The document calls for public feedback on the plans to be submitted by September 5. The move towards added-value products in Binzhou comes amid increased competition in the aluminum sector from other parts of China, where new smelters are pushing the country’s output to record levels.

The southern autonomous region of Guangxi, which has an abundance of aluminum raw material alumina, last month unveiled a plan to establish its own high-end aluminum production base in Nanning.

Another project planned by Binzhou is a plant that will make 1.88 million tonnes per year of carbon materials for the aluminum sector, according to the government document.

China top solar producers ramp up capacity amid slump

Business Times reported that top solar manufacturers in China are boosting production capacity, betting higher output will help them seize a bigger chunk of the global market that is set for its first-ever annual contraction. JinkoSolar Holding Co, which has lost almost half its market value this year, is ramping up cell and panel capacity and targeting higher-quality production, Qian Jing, vice-president of the world's largest panel maker, said in an email. GCL-Poly Energy Holdings Ltd, Tongwei Co and LONGi Green Energy Technology Co, which have all plunged at least 45 per cent over the same period, also announced expansion plans.

The push for growth comes even as global solar prices have tanked after China cut domestic subsidies to rein in record growth in 2017 and integrate existing capacity into the grid. Since the release of its '531 Policy', named after the date of the plan, Goldman Sachs Group Inc and others cut estimates for solar capacity additions in China, the world's largest market, and Bloomberg NEF forecast that panel prices may slump 34 per cent this year.

Mr Han Qiming, a Shanghai-based analyst at SWS Research Co said that "As long as these producers are able to get financing, they should keep expanding. That will give them a chance to grab more market share and achieve greater scale of operations."

JinkoSolar will raise cell capacity by 40 per cent, and panels by 20 per cent, by the end of this year from levels seen in the second quarter, according to a results presentation in August. Tongwei will more than triple its polysilicon capacity by year-end and double cell capacity. GCL-Poly plans to raise polysilicon capacity at its new Xinjiang plant to 50,000 tonnes from a proposed 40,000 tonnes, while LONGi seeks to triple its annual wafer capacity to 45 gigawatts by 2020.

While the fallout from China's clampdown has hurt manufacturers from Asia to Europe, there are good reasons not to cut back. Raising output will allow them to pare unit costs and boost sales while less efficient suppliers get squeezed, according to BNEF analyst Jiang Yali. This could help them to weather the slump of more than 20 per cent in panel and polysilicon prices since China's plan was announced, BNEF data showed.

China wil importheffingen aanpassen

Gepubliceerd op 20 sep 2018 om 08:23 | Views: 5.506 | Onderwerpen: China

ArcelorMittal 16:30
27,45 +0,50 (+1,84%)

Chinese iron ore demand has already peaked - BaoSteel

Baoshan Iron & Steel Co said that China’s iron ore demand has already peaked and is expected to stay flat. Ji Chao, an assistant to the company president, told an industrial conference “China’s steel mills have been focused on the quality of iron ore and that trend will be even more clear. However, mills still need to consider cost, and hopefully we can find a balance.”

China bought a record 1.08 billion tonnes of the steelmaking raw ingredient last year, the second successive year in which purchases crossed the 1-billion mark.

Mr Li Shubin, Executive Vice Chairman & Secretary General of the China Association of Metalscrap Utilization, said that steel mills in China increased usage of scrap in the first half of 2018, with big steelmakers boosting the ratio of scrap in their converters. Li said 87.72 million tonne of scrap was used by Chinese steelmakers in H1 2018, with 180 million tonne estimated for the whole of 2018. They used 148 million tonne of scrap in 2017, up 64.2% from 2016. In 2017, 65% of scrap was used in converters while 35% was used in electric arc furnaces.

China drive to boost broader infrastructure could help its steel sector

Reuters reported that a push to expand subway networks in some of China’s biggest cities along with a drive to boost broader infrastructure investment in the world’s No.2 economy are helping brighten the outlook for the nation’s mammoth steel sector. The northeastern cities of Jiangsu and Changchun, as well as Shenzhen in the south, last month announced plans to spend the equivalent of billions of dollars boosting their underground systems by a total of around 1,600 kilometers (1,000 miles), gobbling up steel as they expand. While the top state planner said it would ramp up investment in infrastructure and accelerate spending on projects that have already been approved, as the nation tries to spur economic growth amid a festering trade war with Washington. The steps, which mark a return to Beijing’s traditional playbook for boosting the economy, are good news for steelmakers in the world’s top producer of the material, who have been grappling with a slowing construction sector and weakening auto sales.

Mr Richard Lu, steel analyst at CRU in Beijing said that “The approval of the infrastructure spending will surely boost expectations of more steel demand and lead to a price rally in steel.”

The three cities’ subway plans will require about 80 million tonnes of the commodity, 10 percent of China’s annual demand, according to Reuters calculations based on industry standards for subway design, although that will be spread over a few years. In addition to high-strength steel track, the expansions will also need multiple stations, extensive underground building work using reinforced steel and rail cars made from alloy steel sheet rather than aluminum used in long-distance trains.

90pct of China's steel capacity to meet pollution rules by 2025 - Vale

Reuters reported that Peter Poppinga, executive director at Vale, told an industry conference that almost 90% of China’s steel capacity will have complied with new emission standards by 2025. He told “By 2025 almost 90% of steel capacity in China will have complied to these new standards.”

Poppinga also said Vale’s iron ore production is running at 400 million tonnes a year currently. He said “We think this is a healthy level going forward when you think about margin optimization.”

China has been aggressively pushing cities to curb industrial production to fight pollution, including plants in the top steelmaking city of Tangshan.

China trading platform eyes record volumes on robust steel output

Reuters reported that volumes at China’s biggest physical iron ore trading platform may hit record levels this year, with demand for the steelmkaing raw material pushed up as steel output has been strong despite pollution-linked curbs. Company president Mr You Song said that volumes traded on the Beijing Iron Ore Trading Center Corporation from January to mid-September have risen 20 percent from the same time in 2017 to 24 million tonnes, and are on course to beat last year’s total of 33.6 million tonnes. He said that the last quarter of the year is typically the strongest in terms of transactions on the platform. Mr You said that “Our target this year is 36 million tonnes, but we have a chance to break 38 million tonnes.”

That would be a new annual high for the platform that began in 2012 and where cargoes from top iron ore suppliers Vale, Rio Tinto and BHP Billiton are among those sold. The last record of 35.35 million tonnes was set in 2016.

Despite production restrictions in many cities including top-producer Tangshan, China’s overall steel output only slipped 1.1 percent in August from a record 81.24 million tonnes in July, as many mills ramped up output to chase strong margins amid firm domestic demand.

Mr You said that “We think production of steel will remain stable, so demand for iron ore will remain stable.”

Chinese aluminium smelters spared by Typhoon Mangkhut

Aluminum Insider reported that aluminium smelters and alumina refineries have thus far been spared the ravages of Typhoon Mangkhut. Sources who spoke to Platts over the weekend confirmed only minor inconveniences to operations in the area. They told “Maybe deliveries on the roads have been slightly affected, but nothing has impacted production or prices so far. It’s just raining now. We’ve not heard any other aluminum producer in the region affected much either.”

Another unnamed source from Aluminum Corp of China (Chalco) said “Transport has been affected, but we’re not certain if any production has been impacted yet. If production is affected, that will definitely impact prices.”

Sunday saw Typhoon Mangkhut make landfall in the southern reaches of the People’s Republic of China. Local weather reports indicate continued heavy rainfall for the region early this week.

Chinese foil makers prepare to defend Mexico anti-dumping

Reuters reported that a group of Chinese aluminium foil producers facing an anti dumping probe in Mexico are organizing a legal defence ahead of possible duties. Mr Wen Xianjun, a vice president of the China Nonferrous Metals Industry Association who coordinated a legal defence for foil makers before the United States International Trade Commission said another no injury defence was being prepared for the Mexico case. He added that “We will do it very quickly. The amount of aluminium foil exported by Chinese companies to Mexico was not big, putting the annual value at perhaps under USD 100 million per year.”

Mexico’s Secretariat of Economy said last month that it was starting an anti-dumping investigation into aluminium foil originating in China and would calculate damages over a three-year period from 2015-17.
