Mercedes-Benz Presents Wide Range Of Third-Generation Plug-in Hybrids

Plug-in hybrids are an important milestone on the road to zero-emissions driving. Mercedes Benz Cars is pushing ahead with the development of its plug-in hybrids under the EQ Power label. With the A 250 e (combined fuel consumption 1.5-1.4 l/100 km, combined CO2 emissions 34-33 g/km, combined electrical consumption 15.0-14.8 kWh/100 km)1, A 250 e Saloon (combined fuel consumption 1.4 l/100 km, combined CO2 emissions 33-32 g/km, combined electrical consumption 14.8 -14.7 kWh/100 km)1 and B 250 e (combined fuel consumption 1.6-1.4 l/100 km, combined CO2 emissions 36-32 g/km, combined electrical consumption 15.4-14.7 kWh/100 km)1 models from the compact-car family with the third-generation hybrid drive are now celebrating their premiere.

The A 250 e and A 250 e Saloon can be ordered now at prices from EUR 36,943.55 and EUR 37,300.553. Sale of the B 250 e starts a few weeks later. Market launch of the models will take place this year. The EQ Power for the A- and B-Class underscores Mercedes-Benz's plug-in initiative: the company aims to extend its offering to more than 20 model variants by 2020.

For the new compact vehicles with EQ Power, (electric) driving pleasure and suitability for everyday use are to the fore. This is illustrated by the models highlights:

Daimler Delivers Freightliner eCascadia to US customers

Daimler Trucks is further expanding its field tests for medium and heavy duty e trucks in North America: This week, American customers Penske Truck Leasing and NFI Industries have acquired the first heavy-duty Freightliner eCascadia trucks with a range of up to 250 miles (400 km). Since the end of 2018, both carriers have been field-testing the medium-duty, fully electric Freightliner eM2. Penske will be operating the Freightliner eCascadia in regional traffic in Southern California, while NFI will employ the eCascadia in drayage operations at both the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. The two eCascadia are the first heavy-duty trucks in Freightliner's innovation fleet with a total of 30 electric vehicles. The market launch for both the Freightliner eCascadia and the eM2 truck is currently planned for 2021.

Since 2018, the E-Mobility Group bundles Daimler Trucks & Buses’ global know-how in the field of e-mobility and defines the strategy for electric components and products across brands and segments. As is the case with the global platform strategy for conventional vehicles, the E-Mobility Group develops an integrated electric architecture, maximizing the use of synergies and optimizing the application of investments.

Daimler to Make Mercedes Benz-Branded Heavy Trucks in China

German auto maker Daimler AG plans to build Mercedes Benz-branded heavy trucks in China by revamping truck plants owned by its local joint venture, according to a document seen by Reuters and two sources familiar with the matter. The plan will deepen the alliance between Daimler and its Chinese truck JV partner, Beiqi Foton Co Ltd, and comes after the purchase of a 5% stake in Daimler last month by its Mercedes Benz passenger car partner, Beijing Automotive Group Co Ltd, Foton's parent group.

One source said that "Localisation of Mercedes Benz-branded trucks had been planned years before, so it has nothing to do with BAIC Group's recent stake purchase in Daimler.”

The Source said that under the plan, Beijing Foton Daimler Automotive will add Actros to its production lines which are mainly used to make Auman trucks, the joint venture's sole truck brand.

In 2016, Daimler's then head of its truck business told German media that it planned to make Mercedes Benz-branded Actros heavy trucks in China by the end of the decade. No details of the plan has since been reported or announced.

Het gaat volgens de Duitse website Automobilwoche om auto's uit de modelseries GLE en GLS, die daar zijn gestald wegens kwaliteitsgebreken. De getroffen auto’s zijn allemaal afkomstig uit de Mercedes-fabriek in Tuscaloosa in de Verenigde Staten. De prijzen van de GLE en GLS variëren van €113.844 voor de goedkoopste GLE tot € 225.405 voor de duurste GLS. Het gaat naar verluidt om meer dan 10.000 auto’s in totaal.

Volgens Automobilwoche zijn er problemen met de stoelen en de bumpers van de SUV’s. In beide gevallen zouden de problemen bij toeleveranciers van Daimler liggen. Vanwege de kwaliteitsgebreken heeft Mercedes al auto's terug moeten nemen van boze klanten, zo gaat het magazine verder.

De auto’s zouden nu worden opgeslagen op het voormalige militaire vliegveld in Ahlhorn totdat de problemen zijn opgelost. Daimler gebruikt het vliegveld Ahlhorn al ongeveer een jaar als opslagruimte. In het begin waren daar auto’s geparkeerd waarvan de verkoop niet was doorgegaan door de diesel-affaire. Nu dus de GLE en GLS, aldus de website.

Daimler & Torc Robotics Begins Testing Automated Trucks On Public Roads

Daimler Trucks and Torc Robotics are actively developing and testing automated trucks with SAE Level 4 intent technology on public roads. The initial routes are on highways in southwest Virginia, where Torc Robotics is headquartered. All automated runs require both an engineer overseeing the system and a highly trained safety driver certified by Daimler Trucks and Torc Robotics. All safety drivers hold a commercial driver’s license and are specially trained in vehicle dynamics and automated systems. The deployment on public roads takes place after months of extensive testing and safety validation on a closed loop track. As part of the comprehensive safety process by Daimler Trucks and Torc Robotics, both test track and on-road validation play an integral role in establishing the essential building blocks for successfully advancing automated technology.

Mr Martin Daum, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG, responsible for Trucks & Buses said that “Torc Robotics is a leader in automated driving technology. Daimler Trucks is the market leader in trucks and we understand the needs of the industry. Daimler AG Adopts Principles for Dealing With AI

Daimler AG is the first automotive manufacturer to have its own principles for artificial intelligence. Responsible use, explainability, protection of privacy as well as safety and reliability as guiding principles according to which the company develops and uses AI. Renata Jungo Brungger Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG for Integrity and Legal Affairs said that "Our four principles for dealing with artificial intelligence create a clearly defined scope for action. We thus make it clear that the human being will remain the pacemaker of technical progress."

An inter-disciplinary team that included experts from Development, IT and Legal Affairs developed the four principles for dealing with artificial intelligence at Daimler, so as to take into account technical, legal and social aspects.

Behind the principle of "Responsible use" is the maxim that the opportunities and effects of AI must be carefully weighed up. The use of AI at Daimler is therefore preceded by a transparent assessment process: Will products, services and processes actually become faster and more efficient with AI? What are the benefits for different target groups? These questions are examined during a risk-based technology impact assessment. Responsible use of AI also means creating a high-quality, representative database. This means that the data used must take the factors relevant to the application into account. This fosters fairness and inclusion.

The principle of "Explainability" creates the transparency necessary to have trust in new technologies. Customers and employees of Daimler AG must be able to recognise when they come into contact with AI – eg by information in the General Terms & Conditions, or by direct messages in the system. The principle also stands for comprehensibility: it must be clear which parameters are included in data analyses. This makes it easier to evaluate the results of AI-based calculations, and avoid unwanted bias.

Mercedes-Benz New PRE-SAFE Functions Keeps On Learning

In 2002, with PRE-SAFE, Mercedes-Benz vehicles started learning to respond before an accident occurs. These functions have improved more and more over time. More new aspects are added with the ESF 2019: PRE-SAFE Curve and PRE-SAFE Side lighting defuse situations where the accident risk suddenly increases but can be avoided. At the end of tailbacks, PRE-SAFE Impulse Rear improves the protection of passengers and others involved in an accident.

Even in vehicles that can already automatically take over driving functions, the driver will be able to drive the vehicle if desired and do so for personal enjoyment. Intelligent onboard systems can provide support in this case. PRE-SAFE Curve uses the reversible belt tensioners if the driver approaches a bend at high speed. The belts are tensioned well before the bend is reached, so that the driver receives a warning and can still reduce the speed. At the same time the passengers receive improved support from the increased belt tension when negotiating the bend.

The car also warns other road users with the PRE-SAFE Side lighting function. This based on electro-luminescent paint.

PRE-SAFE Impulse Rear attempts to prevent an impending rear-end collision, or to mitigate its effects, by briefly accelerating the car forwards at the last moment. The ESF 2019 maintains the same distance at the end of a tailback as a careful driver. When the system recognises that the vehicle behind is about to cause a rear-end collision, it briefly accelerates the car into the gap between it and the vehicle ahead, then brakes it to a stop. This increases the chance of avoiding an accident, as traffic behind has a longer braking distance available. Moreover, the consequences are less serious for the occupants of the ESF 2019 if the impact is unavoidable, as they have already been accelerated forward and the relative speed is lower. The resulting movement of the occupants is another advantage. This is because the occupant is forced back into the seat before a possible rear impact, so the head is resting against the head restraint. This can further reduce the risk of typical neck injuries (whiplash). Crash simulations have shown that acceleration impulses lasting just a few hundred milliseconds can considerably reduce the impact energy.

Mercedes-Benz Sources Battery Cells from Farasis Energy

Mercedes-Benz has agreed on a sustainability partnership with Farasis Energy Co Ltd to take a holistic approach along the entire value chain. The supplier network contributes a significant part of the value creation and is thus of vital importance for the decarbonisation goals. Mr Markus Schafer, Member of the Daimler AG Board of Management responsible for Corporate Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development said that “With Ambition 2039, we have set the course for sustainable mobility. In addition to the consistent electrification of our product portfolio, we also look at the supply chain to realise our long-term objective of climate neutrality: part of the battery cells for the next vehicle generation of our EQ product and technology brand are already to be produced using 100 % electricity from renewable energies.”

By sourcing batteries from carbon-neutral production, we are making another important contribution on the road to a carbon-neutral new passenger car fleet in twenty years. The partnership with Farasis Energy (Ganzhou) Co Ltd comprises the production of battery cells produced with electricity from renewable energies as well as the subject of recycling and the observance of human rights in the supply chain. Farasis uses electricity produced from renewable energy sources such as hydropower, wind and solar energy in the production of the battery cells.

Mercedes-Benz gaat zich compleet richten op het ontwikkelen van elektromotoren en accu's voor het bouwen van een vloot elektrische auto's. Dat meldt het Duitse autoblad Auto Motor und Sport.

Mercedes-Benz heeft net een compleet nieuwe generatie verbrandingsmotoren af waarmee het nog een flink aantal jaren vooruit kan. Maar het is hoogstwaarschijnlijk tevens de laatste generatie benzine- en dieselmotoren ooit voor het beroemde automerk, dat aan de basis stond van de automobiel.

Mercedes-Benz deelde dit mee bij monde van ontwikkelingschef Markus Schäfer. ,,We gaan ons richten op de ontwikkeling van accu's en elektrische aandrijflijnen”, zei hij tegen het toonaangevende Duitse autoblad Auto Motor und Sport. Schäfer zei dat er momenteel geen plannen zijn voor nieuwe ontwikkelingen qua verbrandingsmotoren.

Volkswagen heeft al eerder aangegeven dat het na 2025 geen auto's met verbrandingsmotor meer zal ontwikkelen. Het Klimaatakkoord van Parijs voorziet in een klimaatneutrale samenleving tegen 2050. Ook andere merken richten zich in toenemende mate op elektrische modellen. Veel nieuwe autofabrikanten in China hebben helemaal geen verbrandingsmotoren meer in hun gamma. Zij richten zich nu al puur op elektrische aandrijving.

Mercedes-Benz Two Emission Free Premieres at Zugerland Verkehrsbetriebe & Bus Ostschweiz

The basis for this is a unique thermal management system with a heat pump for heating the passenger compartment, as well as temperature control for the battery and connected components. Many of these have been made available for the first time in line with the eCitaro. Its exclusive design is derived from that of the popular Mercedes Benz Citaro and makes for a very distinct appearance – the eCitaro is a very special type of Citaro. The eCitaro buses ordered by ZVB and BOS are characterised by their extensive equipment. Passengers benefit from an air conditioning system, 15 double USB ports for their own end devices and three monitors for providing information during the journey. Passengers with reduced mobility will notice generously dimensioned areas for wheelchairs and pushchairs, as well as tactile handrails with ribbed handle profiles on the doors or the contrast-rich interior design. Bus drivers will appreciate the exterior camera for keeping an eye on cyclists and pedestrians. Interior surveillance cameras and a door-closing warning system with red LED light strip and video surveillance provide for added security.

The eCitaro is fitted with ten battery modules providing a total capacity of 243 kWh which guarantee a range of around 150 kilometres even in difficult conditions. The batteries of the eCitaro buses destined for ZVB and BOS are charged by cable at the depot.

(ABM FN-Dow Jones) Daimler heeft een boete van 870 miljoen euro opgelegd gekregen door de openbare aanklager van Stuttgart. Dit maakte de Duitse autofabrikant dinsdag bekend.

De autofabrikant wordt in nasleep van de dieselaffaire verweten gebrekkig toezicht te hebben gehouden op de afdeling die zich bezighoudt met de certificering van de voertuigen.

Daimler heeft besloten om niet tegen de boete in beroep te gaan.

Ondanks de boete ziet Daimler geen aanleidingen om zijn winstverwachting aan te passen.

25 Years of the Mercedes Benz Tourismo

25 years ago, it enjoyed its world premiere and now Mercedes Benz has handed over the 30,000th unit: the Mercedes Benz Tourismo is the best-selling touring coach of its time in all of Europe. Three is the magic number: the current third generation was introduced two years ago and impresses more than ever before, thanks to a number of Tourismo-typical characteristics – unbeaten safety, maximum economy and high levels of comfort.

Mr Rafal Janczuk, Managing Director of the Polish bus company RAF TRANS, at the handover of the 30,000th Tourismo said that "The Mercedes Benz Tourismo is a true all-rounder. For businesses, the Tourismo is a real economic miracle, plus for passengers and driver's it is a safe and comfortable bus."

Administrative Offense Proceedings against Daimler AG Fully Concluded

The Stuttgart public prosecutor issued a fine notice against Daimler AG pursuant to Sections 30 para. 1, 130 para. 1 of the Administrative Offenses Act based on a negligent violation of supervisory duties in the area of vehicle certification in connection with deviations from regulatory requirements in certain Mercedes-Benz vehicles. According thereto, the negligent violation of supervisory duties occurred on the department head level. The Company has refrained from taking a legal remedy against the fine notice. The public prosecutor’s administrative offense proceeding against Daimler AG is thereby fully concluded.

According to the public prosecutor’s findings, the negligent violation of supervisory duties caused at least in part that certain vehicles of Daimler AG had partly deviated from regulatory requirements since 2008. In this context, the public prosecutor essentially refers to the known recall orders by the German Federal Motor Transport Authority. In order to get clarity also for the future with respect to the interpretation of relevant legal provisions in a complex technical environment, Daimler AG maintains the objections against the KBA orders. After weighing all aspects, Daimler has refrained from taking a legal remedy in the public prosecutor’s administrative offense proceeding. It is in the Company’s best interest to end the administrative offense proceeding in a timely and comprehensive manner and thereby conclude this matter.

The fine notice provides for a fine in the amount of EUR 870 million. The amount of the fine consists of a sanctioning part as well as a disgorgement part. The amount of the sanctioning part is EUR 4 million for the negligent violation of supervisory duties as assumed by the public prosecutor. It is thus below the statutory maximum amount. The amount of the disgorgement part is mainly determined by the profitability of the Company and amounts to EUR 866 million.

Opnieuw honderdduizenden voertuigen van Mercedes teruggeroepen wegens sjoemelsoftware

De Duitse autobouwer Daimler moet nog eens honderdduizenden dieselvoertuigen van Mercedes-Benz terugroepen omdat ze vermoedelijk zijn uitgerust met sjoemelsoftware. Daar heeft de Duitse toezichthouder KBA Daimler toe verplicht.

Over hoeveel voertuigen het precies gaat, wil Daimler niet meedelen. Maar uit de omschrijving (,,een middelhoog zescijferig aantal”) valt af te leiden dat het ruwweg om 400.000 tot 600.000 auto's zou gaan. Er zitten minstens 260.000 exemplaren van het model Sprinter bij. Alle betrokken voertuigen werden voor juni 2016 gebouwd.

Volgens Duitse media opende de KBA in oktober een onderzoek naar software waarmee de uitstoot van de voertuigen lager zou liggen tijdens uitlaatgas-tests dan in de praktijk op de weg.

Daimler werkt mee met de autoriteiten, maar zal tegelijk ook de beslissing aanvechten. Volgens de autobouwer is de technologie waarover het gaat niet illegaal. Vorig jaar moest Daimler al eens 690.000 dieselvoertuigen terugroepen in Europa.

Mercedes Benz Unimog trucks Tow 200 Tonne Metro

The new M52 metro line in Amsterdam is 9.7 km long; 7.1 km of which runs underground. If a train breaks down, help is needed quickly. To this end, two Mercedes-Benz Unimog road-rail trucks stand ready to help. Working in tandem, these Unimog road-rail vehicles are powerful enough to pull even the heaviest, 200-tonne metros out of the tunnel up the four-percent climb. This tandem operation has been possible since Amsterdam's GVB transport company received their second Unimog road-railer. Like the first vehicle delivered in 2017, the current truck is also a U 423 model capable of delivering 170 kW (231 hp) and 900 Nm of torque. In order to apply the power to the rails effectively, the vehicles are equipped with a torque converter clutch. The rail guidance system necessary for rail transport and the control for tandem operation are from Zagro in Bad Rappenau.

The new Unimog U 423 with a closed box body, a wagon brake system and hydraulic re-railing equipment is a flexible multi-purpose vehicle for GVB Amsterdam that is used for a huge variety of operative and maintenance tasks. The 2017 Unimog U 423 on the other hand is equipped with a loading crane instead of a box body. It is used by GVB for renewing points, for example, or towing machinery.

GVB, the Amsterdam municipal transport corporation, runs underground trains, trams, city buses and the city ferries. The company transports 227.1 million passengers per year, and with a staff numbering about 5000 it is one of Amsterdam's major employers.

German Regulator KBA Orders Mercedes-Benz Diesel Vehicles

Germany's road traffic regulator KBA has concluded hearings over certain Mercedes-Benz vehicles with so-called OM651 diesel engines meeting Euro 5 emission standards and has ordered Daimler to carry out recalls. Daimler said a medium six figure number of vehicles would be affected by the recall, including 260,000 Sprinter vans from a previous generation of vehicles that went out of production in 2016

A recall of Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vehicles was imminent after KBA warned the luxury carmaker that the transporter vans may contain illegal engine management software.
