The Secret Group of Scientists and Billionaires Pushing a Manhattan Project for Covid-19

They are working to cull the world’s most promising research on the pandemic, passing on their findings to policy makers and the White House

A dozen of America’s top scientists and a collection of billionaires and industry titans say they have the answer to the coronavirus pandemic, and they found a backdoor to deliver their plan to the White House.

The eclectic group is led by a 33-year-old physician-turned-venture capitalist, Tom Cahill, who lives far from the public eye in a one-bedroom rental near Boston’s Fenway Park. He owns just one suit, but he has enough lofty connections to influence government decisions in the war against Covid-19.

These scientists and their backers describe their work as a lockdown-era Manhattan Project, a nod to the World War II group of scientists who helped develop the atomic bomb. This time around, the scientists are marshaling brains and money to distill unorthodox ideas gleaned from around the globe.

They call themselves Scientists to Stop Covid-19, and they include chemical biologists, an immunobiologist, a neurobiologist, a chronobiologist, an oncologist, a gastroenterologist, an epidemiologist and a nuclear scientist. Of the scientists at the center of the project, biologist Michael Rosbash, a 2017 Nobel Prize winner, said, “There’s no question that I’m the least qualified.”

This group, whose work hasn’t been previously reported, has acted as the go-between for pharmaceutical companies looking for a reputable link to Trump administration decision makers. They are working remotely as an ad hoc review board for the flood of research on the coronavirus, weeding out flawed studies before they reach policy makers.

The group has compiled a confidential 17-page report that calls for a number of unorthodox methods against the virus. One big idea is treating patients with powerful drugs previously used against Ebola, with far heftier dosages than have been tried in the past.

The Food and Drug Administration and the Department of Veterans Affairs have already implemented specific recommendations, such as slashing manufacturing regulations and requirements for specific coronavirus drugs.

National Institutes of Health Director Francis Collins told people this month that he agreed with most of the recommendations in the report, according to documents reviewed by The Wall Street Journal and people familiar with the matter. The report was delivered to cabinet members and Vice President Mike Pence, head of the administration’s coronavirus task force.

A new USA TODAY/Suffolk University Poll shows the former vice president leading Trump nationwide by 6 percentage points, 44% to 38%, a shift from Trump's 3-point lead in the survey as he was being impeached by the House in December. In a contest without a third-party contender, Biden's margin jumps to 10 points, 50% to 40%.

In the previous poll, when Trump led 44% to 41%, Biden was in the middle of a fierce battle for the Democratic nomination. Now he is the party's presumptive nominee.

The findings underscore the challenge the deadly pandemic is posing to the president’s political standing, which has proved durable through investigations into Russian meddling in the 2016 election, a Senate impeachment trial over his dealings with Ukraine and other controversies.

Now Trump's standing may be threatened in the face of questions about the response he and his administration have made to a disease that has cost more than 55,000 lives in the United States and imperiled the nation’s economy.

Donald Trump kan zich niet voorstellen dat zijn omstreden uitspraken over het injecteren van desinfectiemiddelen tegen het coronavirus hebben geleid tot een toename in het aantal incidenten met schoonmaakmiddelen in Amerikaanse huishoudens. Dat liet de Amerikaanse president tijdens een persconferentie weten.

Tientallen Amerikanen zouden de afgelopen dagen schoonmaakmiddel hebben geconsumeerd nadat Trump in een persconferentie suggereerde dat inname ervan het coronavirus zou kunnen genezen.

Alleen al in de Amerikaanse staat Maryland kwamen ruim honderd telefoontjes binnen. ,,Dit is een herinnering dat in geen geval een desinfecterend product via injectie, inname of een andere route in het lichaam mag worden toegediend”, liet de politie in een twitterbericht weten.
‘Kan het me niet voorstellen’

Niet alleen Maryland, maar ook andere Amerikaanse staten meldden dat ze vorige week een piek hebben gezien bij mensen die desinfectiemiddel inwendig gebruikten. Een verslaggever confronteerde Trump met de cijfers en vroeg hem of hij hier enige verantwoordelijkheid voor voelde. ,,Nee, ik weet het niet. Ik kan het me niet voorstellen. Ik kan het me niet voorstellen”, reageerde de president.

Eerder zei Trump dat zijn uitspraken over het injecteren van desinfectiemiddelen niet letterlijk genomen moeten worden. Hij bedoelde het naar eigen zeggen sarcastisch. ,,Het desinfectiemiddel schakelt het in een minuut uit”, zei de president. ,,Is er een manier waarop we zoiets kunnen doen door het te injecteren? Bijna als een schoonmaak.”
Storm van kritiek

De president kreeg na de persconferentie een storm van kritiek over zich heen. Experts waarschuwden dat het levensgevaarlijk is om een desinfectiemiddel te injecteren. De Britse multinational Reckitt Benckiser, maker van onder meer de desinfecterende schoonmaakmiddelen Dettol en Lysol, riep Amerikanen met klem op om de middelen vooral niet te drinken, te injecteren of op wat voor manier dan ook het lichaam in te brengen.

Trump kwam later terug op zijn opmerkingen en zei tegen journalisten dat hij het allemaal niet zo serieus bedoelde. ,,Ik stelde op sarcastische wijze een vraag aan verslaggevers als jij. Gewoon om te kijken wat er zou gebeuren.” Het Witte Huis had vanwege de rel al uitgehaald naar de media. Die kregen het verwijt dat ze Trump in een kwaad daglicht probeerden te stellen.

,,Laat het maar aan de media over om uitspraken van president Trump uit hun context te halen en met negatieve koppen te komen”, reageerde een woordvoerster. Ze stelde ook dat Trump steeds heeft gezegd dat mensen een arts moeten raadplegen over hun coronabehandeling.

To be sure, only two presidents have served during measurable mass polarization, Obama and now Trump, and any president serving under polarized conditions might expect a muted “R.A.T.F.E” as a result. Yet, polarization cannot account for the total lack of any effect for Trump because mass polarization, like its elite polarization cousin, is asymmetrical, tending to be stronger among Republicans than among Democrats. The lack of any “national unity” effect speaks to more than polarization — it suggests that there is something more going on, something specifically lacking in Trump’s handling of the crisis. And that is a bad sign for the president, because when a crisis of this magnitude sweeps in, the public tends to start out forgiving and end it angry. Presidents need that reservoir of goodwill to drain out slowly, over time, as the inevitable inadequacies of crisis response take their toll. Trump will not have a goodwill reservoir to draw from as the extent of the crisis begins to materialize — a scary prospect for his reelection team.

Donald Trump heeft een speciale relatie gehad met een aantal verschillende religieuze leiders. Steun van Jerry Falwell Jr. en de evangelische kerk hielpen hem in het najaar van 2016 naar het Witte Huis.

Nu er de komende maanden een zware verkiezing op komst is, probeert Trump zijn steun van religieuze hogere partijen te versterken. De president heeft zaterdag een gesprek gevoerd met katholieke leiders. Tijdens een optreden op maandag op Fox and Friends besprak kardinaal James Dolan de oproep en prees hij uitbundig geprezen.

De in New York City gevestigde religieuze figuur zei over Trump: "Ik groet zijn leiderschap echt."

Dolan nam de tijd om de acties van burgemeester Bill DeBlasio en gouverneur Andrew Cuomo te prijzen, maar kwam toen terug bij Trump. 'Iedereen is echt doorgekomen, maar de president leek bijzonder gevoelig voor de, wat moet ik zeggen, gevoelens van de religieuze gemeenschap', vervolgde hij.

De kardinaal steunde ook de boodschap van Trump tijdens de zaterdagoproep en de inzet van de president voor katholieke scholen.

Dolan zei naar verluidt tijdens het gesprek: “De vooruitzichten hebben er financieel nooit somberder uit gezien, maar misschien hebben de vooruitzichten er misschien nooit zo veelbelovend uit gezien, gezien de energieke inzet die uw administratie heeft voor onze scholen. We hebben je meer dan ooit nodig. '

Trump beëindigde de oproep met een waarschuwing aan de katholieke leiders over de verkiezingen in 2020. 'Ik hoop dat iedereen uitstapt en stemt en doet wat hij moet doen', zei hij. 'Je krijgt een heel andere katholieke kerk (als Trump wordt verslagen).'

Hmmm. De verhouding dode varkens per dode slager ligt waarschijnlijk erg laag, dus zo groot is het probleem niet.

En als je ook meeneemt dat het grillseizoen nadert, dan is de keuze snel gemaakt.

Helemaal als je in je besluitvorming meeneemt dat je de boeren nodig hebt als stemvee, en Mike Tyson rake klappen kan uitdelen.

Prisons and meat processors are hotbeds of coronavirus. One can’t close. The other won’t be allowed to.

A number of the counties with the highest per capita infection rates are home to meat processing facilities where the virus has spread quickly. We’ve written before about Louisa County, Iowa, where the number of confirmed cases surged quickly at the beginning of April. It is home to a Tyson plant and has an infection rate of 238 cases per 10,000 residents.

Dakota County, Neb. is also home to a Tyson plant. Its infection rate is 226 cases per 10,000. Cass County, Ind. has the sixth-highest per capita infection rate at 269 cases per 10,000 residents. It’s home to a Tyson Fresh Meats plant.

As we reported on Saturday, it’s not only Tyson that has experienced outbreaks. Spikes in infections in Hall County, Neb., and Nobles County, Minn., have been driven by the virus spreading through plants operated by JBS USA.

On Tuesday, Trump said that he would sign an order using the Defense Production Act to keep meat processing plants open.

“We are working with Tyson, we are. We’re going to sign an executive order today, I believe,” Trump said. “That will solve any liability problems where they have certain liability problems. We’ll be in very good shape.”

He later called the issue a “sort of a legal roadblock.”

It’s not clear what that wording means, but Trump’s assurance that the companies would be able to avoid “liability problems” suggests that the processing facilities will be reopened with the companies receiving protection for any legal problems that arise — presumably including new infections.

This is not how Defense Production Act works. Under the DPA, government can force a private company to contract for production and sale of a particular good at a set price. But DPA does not permit government to issue a blanket “you stay open” order to a private company.
In other words, government could order a specific plant to produce X pounds of poultry to be sold to the government at Y dollars per pound. But not just “stay open.”

De Amerikaanse Oorlogswet Defense Production Act is er, om bedrijven aan te wijzen die oorlogsmaterieel moeten maken voor de Overheid.

En niet om vleesverwerkers te verplichten om open te blijven met medisch gevaar voor henzelf en voor hun klanten. Zelfs niet als een hooggeplaatste Amerikaan met Duitse achtergrond erg graag bij de McDonalds eet.

Personen die niet besmet zijn en het virus niet bij zich dragen, kunnen elkaar niet besmetten. Bij veel contacten zal het dus niet nodig zijn een mondkapje te dragen, net als de 1,5 meter afstand.
Punt is dat je het van te voren niet zeker weet.
Trouwens, mondkapjes schijnen niet te helpen, ook niet omdat ze er niet genoeg zijn.

Personen die niet besmet zijn met het virus kunnen nog altijd besmet worden indien ze geen mondmaskertje dragen.
