Putin Forces 'Confused' by Ukraine Strikes, Headed for Surrender: General

former U.S. general has forecast the surrender of Russian forces in Kherson, a strategic city in Ukraine.

The Kherson region has been almost entirely controlled by Russian troops since March, when it became the first major city to fall during Russian President Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine. Ukrainian forces have launched a counteroffensive to take back the critical port city.

Retired U.S. Army Lieutenant General Mark Hertling commented Monday on a Ukrainian soldier's video from the frontlines showing destroyed Russian positions in Kherson.

According to Hertling's analysis on Twitter, the footage indicated "extremely poor soldier discipline" and "horrible fieldcraft/training" in the Russian army. It appeared that lower-level leadership was in crisis while senior leaders were not circulating information, said Hertling. Meanwhile, morale was plunging and the potential for disease was rising, he said.

The ex-general predicted Russia's "future surrender" in Kherson.

Hertling shared more in-depth tactical observations in another Twitter thread. He noted that Ukrainian forces had begun "shaping operations"—or countering the enemy's ability to affect their maneuvers—using a combination of long- and short-range artillery strikes, Special Operations Forces, small unit teams and resistance warfare.

Ukraine had set up its counteroffensive to strike when and where they chose while Russia fought on the defensive to secure its ground, said Hertling. These actions have lowered Russian morale by killing a great deal of Russian soldiers and destroying equipment.

Shifting a counteroffensive to Kherson was a "brilliant" strategy, according to Hertling, because the large Russian force there has a river at their back and limited supply lines. In the last few days, Ukraine has used the M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARs) to destroy the bridges while they attack Russian troops.

"Reports indicate UA has been involved in intense fighting in Vysokopillya, Arkhangelske & Potemkine," said Hertling. Meanwhile, Russian forces are reportedly falling back to the Beryslav Bridgehead. From there, it will be very difficult for them to retreat across the very wide river. Kherson only has two bridges.

Ukraine's attacks with precision weapons are "confusing" the Russian army, which already has very low morale, poor leadership, and diminishing supplies—leaving the larger force in a "quandary," said Hertling.

In another indication that Russia's defense of Kherson is faltering, Kirill Stremousov, a Kremlin-installed leader of occupied Kherson, said Monday that the region's planned referendum on joining Russia had been "paused" for security reasons.

HELSINKI (ANP/AFP) - Rusland heeft sinds het begin van de oorlog in Oekraïne voor omgerekend 158 miljard euro aan energie-export binnengehaald. Daarvan nam de Europese Unie meer dan de helft voor haar rekening, meldde The Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA). De denktank riep tegelijkertijd op tot effectievere sancties tegen Moskou nu door het instellen van sancties tegen Rusland de prijzen voor olie, gas en kolen de pan uit rijzen.

„De opgelopen prijzen van fossiele brandstoffen betekenen ook dat Rusland veel meer geld verdient met de export in vergelijking met voorgaande jaren, ondanks de verminderde exportvolumes dit jaar”, aldus de in Finland gevestigde organisatie. De prijzen voor aardgas zijn in Europa de laatste tijd tot recordhoogte gestegen doordat Rusland de toevoer afsnijdt. De prijzen voor ruwe olie zijn na de invasie ook omhooggeschoten, hoewel ze sindsdien wel weer wat zijn gedaald.

„De export van fossiele brandstoffen heeft sinds het begin van de invasie ongeveer 43 miljard euro bijgedragen aan de federale begroting van Rusland, waarmee de oorlogsmisdaden in Oekraïne werden gefinancierd”, aldus CREA. De cijfers hebben betrekking op de zes maanden na de Russische invasie van 24 februari in Oekraïne. In deze periode was de EU volgens schattingen van de CREA met 85,1 miljard euro de grootste importeur van Russische fossiele brandstoffen. China volgde met 34,9 miljard euro. Turkije was goed voor 10,7 miljard euro.

De EU heeft de aankoop van steenkool uit Rusland stopgezet, maar voert slechts een geleidelijk verbod op Russische olie in. Verder zijn er nog geen beperkingen vastgesteld voor de invoer van aardgas. Daar is het landenblok sterk afhankelijk van Rusland.

Volgens de CREA is het EU-verbod op de invoer van steenkool uit Rusland doeltreffend geweest. Na de inwerkingtreding van het verbod daalde de Russische kolenexport tot het laagste niveau sinds het begin van de oorlog. „Rusland is er niet in geslaagd andere kopers te vinden om de dalende vraag in de EU te compenseren”, aldus CREA.

De organisatie drong wel aan op strengere regels voor de uitvoer van Russische olie en op handhaving daarvan. De EU en het Verenigd Koninkrijk zouden daarbij hun invloed in de mondiale scheepvaart moeten aanwenden. „De EU moet verbieden dat Europese schepen en Europese havens worden gebruikt voor het verschepen van Russische olie naar andere landen, terwijl het Verenigd Koninkrijk moet ophouden zijn verzekeringssector aan deze handel te laten deelnemen”, aldus CREA.

De G7-landen beloofden eerder dringend werk te zullen maken van een prijsplafond voor Russische ruwe olie. Daardoor zou Rusland een groot deel van de inkomsten uit zijn olie-export verliezen.

Russia may face a domestic energy crunch as production slows following EU's oil embargo, natural-gas cuts to Europe

Russia has halted natural-gas flows to Europe via a key pipeline amid the war in Ukraine, but the move may end up biting itself, according to Bloomberg, citing an internal document prepared for the Russian government.

While Russia is an energy giant, most of its exports go to European customers. In 2021, Europe snapped up about half of Russia's oil products and three-quarters of its natural gas, according to the US Energy Information Administration.

Thus, a fall in exports to Europe means Russian natural-gas production would have to fall to better meet lower shipment needs. This would, in turn, hit Moscow's plans to boost domestic gas supplies, per Bloomberg, citing the report.

Additionally, a complete halt in natural-gas supplies to Europe could cost the Kremlin as much as 400 billion rubles, or $6.6 billion, a year in tax revenues, according to Russia's internal report, per the media outlet. While Russia is trying to diversify its customer base, new markets will not be able to make up lost sales from European customers in the medium term.

As Europe is also set to ban most Russian oil imports from the end of 2022, the demand slump could lead to a deep cut in Russian production, causing a shortage of the fuel domestically, Bloomberg reported, citing the internal report.

Overall, the internal Russian report paints a gloomy picture of the country's economy amid sweeping sanctions over its invasion of Ukraine — which contrasts sharply with more upbeat data from the Kremlin in recent months.

The situation could worsen if the world enters a recession. That's because Russia would've already lost its stable European market, causing it to become a "swing supplier" of energy products — with the country having to adjust and adapt its output to changing market demands, according to the report.

This would mean that a plunge in demand for Russian oil products could have an adverse economic impact, such as pushing up inflation in the country and putting downward pressure on the ruble, the report warned, per Bloomberg.
