Geweldig!

TMTA1.49, +0.09, +6.4%) , the leader in efficient computing technologies, today announced that it has developed a specialized Efficeon(R) microprocessor and a robust reference system platform specifically designed to support FlexGo(TM), Microsoft's new technology that enables subscription and pay-as-you-go computing models in emerging markets. These offerings are designed for consumers within emerging markets where acquisition cost and uncertain monthly income have limited widespread Personal Computer ownership. Microsoft's FlexGo technology combined with Transmeta's microprocessor chip technology offer an affordable means for personal computer usage and consumption through new business models such as pay-as-you-go computing.
These new business models resemble the highly effective prepaid and subscription cellular phone business model currently implemented in emerging markets. Analysts estimate that there are about 1.5 billion people in the world that earn the equivalent of $4,000 to $20,000 annually who could be potential users of low cost personal computers, if the costs of entry are low and monthly costs for connections are priced to fit within their budgets.
"Transmeta's innovative microprocessor architecture and strong engineering services team enabled us to create a product that fits Microsoft's requirements," commented Arthur L. Swift, president and CEO of Transmeta. "Our 90 nanometer Efficeon processor has a compelling feature set, and its unique software-based architecture enabled customization for this specialized application. From the beginning, this Microsoft program has been an ideal engagement for the synergistic engineering services component of our new business model."
Transmeta developed this specialized version of its x86-compatible Efficeon microprocessor and the associated reference system platform under an engineering services agreement between Transmeta and Microsoft first announced in May 2005.
The specialized microprocessor is an enhanced version of Transmeta's 90 nanometer Efficeon microprocessor that includes instruction set extensions developed with Microsoft to support the FlexGo technology, which enables both pay-as-you-go and subscription computing models in emerging markets. This new Efficeon processor provides a secure foundation for Microsoft's FlexGo technology and associated business models. The design of the processor offers robust protection from repurposing and protects the business investment in subsidized systems.
The reference system platform is a production-ready solution that provides the security and hardening recommended, both at the microprocessor level and the system design level, to support the pay-as-you-go and subscription-based usage models. The cost effective design also meets the unique needs of users in emerging markets. For example, the system is powered with a 12-volt DC input, which can either be supplied by a low cost DC transformer or a car battery.
"Transmeta's Efficeon microprocessor and reference system platform provide the features and cost-effective hardening recommended for subscription and pay-as-you-go computing models with FlexGo technology," said Tom Phillips, General Manager of the New Business & Products Group at Microsoft. "Transmeta rose to the challenge and delivered both a specialized processor and platform to meet the unique needs of FlexGo. They have delivered a strong system that is well-suited for the require

Interview With Swift On M$ FlexGo...
by: vegastopdog
Long-Term Sentiment: Strong Buy 05/22/06 07:20 am
Msg: 89330 of 89330

"This happens to be the project we were working on," said Art Swift, Transmeta's president and chief executive, in an interview about the FlexGo initiative.

So the mystery is solved?

"The mystery is solved," he said.

In other words, it's not a hand-held Xbox, or a super-portable PC -- or anything else that people theorized after Transmeta first referred cryptically to a series of proprietary development agreements with Microsoft in a regulatory filing last year.

But it is something that Transmeta believes could have significant business potential. Specifically, Swift said, Transmeta has been working with Microsoft to customize a version of its Efficeon microprocessor for the FlexGo initiative.

The Microsoft initiative will let consumers in developing nations pay for their PCs over time by buying access to the machine through prepaid cards or subscription fees. One key to the initiative is technology that prevents the computer from being fully used unless time is bought in advance.

Transmeta's specialized processor is designed with extra security to keep someone from sidestepping that technology.

The FlexGo project follows a cell phone model -- with the PC available at a discounted price and computer makers or telecommunications firms making money over time through subscription fees or prepaid cards.

"The whole key to making that work is to make sure that the system isn't repurposed and pirated," Swift said. "Security is very important to making the business model work, and that's what Transmeta has delivered."

Swift said the chip's low-power features also play into the needs of emerging markets, where the computers might be running on battery power. In addition, that aspect provides the opportunity to eliminate the computer's fan, a plus in a dusty environment.

Also as part of the project, Transmeta designed a "hardened," high-security hardware system that Microsoft will license to companies making the hardware for FlexGo.

Although it has been deeply involved in the project, Transmeta isn't the only microprocessor company that will supply chips for computers in the FlexGo initiative. Influential chip makers Intel and AMD also are involved as Microsoft rolls the program out to additional test markets. But Swift said he believes Transmeta has "by far the most secure solution."

Swift cited the more than 1 billion people estimated to be in a financial position to buy PCs through the program. He called it "a very substantial market opportunity."

Even so, he said, the previous speculation about the mysterious project made sense.

"Honestly, the parts are a beautiful fit for those types of applications," he said, explaining that the power levels of the processor would work well with hand-held computers or small game consoles. "The speculation was natural and perfectly appropriate given the types of parts that we built."

However, he said, that's not why Microsoft has been paying Transmeta those development services fees over the past year.

Welsh,

SUNNYVALE, Calif. & SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 5, 2006--AMD (NYSE:AMD - News) and Transmeta Corporation (NASDAQ:TMTA - News) today announced that they have entered into an exclusive agreement under which AMD will market and provide the recently announced specialized version of the Efficeon® microprocessor in emerging markets. The AMD Efficeon microprocessor was specifically designed by Transmeta to provide a secure hardware foundation for FlexGo, Microsoft Corp.'s new technology that enables pay-as-you-go and subscription computing models. The AMD Efficeon offers robust CPU-level security that delivers asset protection in a product that is available today to meet the needs of the new business models enabled by Microsoft FlexGo.

Microsoft's FlexGo technology, and the pay-as-you-go and subscription computing models it enables, combined with AMD's Efficeon processor, will accelerate AMD's 50x15 initiative in new and important ways. Under 50x15, AMD is establishing a global network of partners and business models to help connect 50 percent of the world's population to the Internet by the year 2015. Current global Internet penetration stands at about 15 percent. Through the AMD Efficeon product, OEM and other partners will have a robust CPU-based Microsoft FlexGo implementation that can be readily adapted to both mobile and desktop system designs. The AMD Efficeon product was used to create the first hardware implementation for FlexGo and is the first CPU-based FlexGo product. Further, the AMD Efficeon product is now being utilized in the second Brazil FlexGo trials that were launched by Microsoft on May 22nd of 2006.

"The AMD Efficeon processor is the industry's first microprocessor designed specifically to support Microsoft FlexGo technology," said Billy Edwards, AMD chief innovation officer and senior vice president. "The Efficeon processor will allow consumers in high-growth markets to obtain computers that are provided on a pre-paid basis using either tokens or pre-paid activation cards. This same business model was instrumental in establishing massive global penetration for cell phones and we believe we can adapt it specifically to achieve the goals of AMD's 50x15 Initiative."

"AMD's worldwide channels and consumer brand will accelerate the penetration of this specialized Efficeon microprocessor into high volume emerging markets," said Arthur L. Swift, president and chief executive officer, Transmeta Corporation. "We look at this announcement as the beginning of a very successful collaboration between AMD and Transmeta to bring Microsoft FlexGo technology to market. Our goal, in conjunction with AMD, is to leverage Transmeta's unique microprocessor architecture and bring affordable solutions quickly to market for the hundreds of millions of potential Personal Computer users in emerging markets."

"Microsoft has worked with the Efficeon product for several years in our FlexGo development efforts, and we are impressed with the security capabilities and versatility of this CPU," said Will Poole, senior vice president of the Market Expansion Group at Microsoft. "The combination of the deep AMD experience in the 50x15 initiative and the advanced security capabilities of the AMD Efficeon will accelerate the availability of attractively priced PCs with Microsoft FlexGo in emerging markets."

Pay-as-you-go and subscription computing enabled by Microsoft FlexGo technology is the latest addition to AMD's solution portfolio targeted to support AMD's 50x15 initiative. The diversity of cultures, local preferences and application needs for emerging markets demands a large portfolio of solutions, including the pay-as-you-go business model, value-based desktop and laptop solutions, AMD's Personal Internet Communicator (PIC), thin client devices developed by companies such as Sun and Wyse Technology, and the upcoming One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) device targeted for education in these markets. AMD and its partners are building ecosystems that bring the full range of hardware, software, infrastructure (electrical power and similar), micro-financing expertise, and entrepreneurial experience to emerging markets.

About 50x15

AMD's 50x15 initiative is a bold and far-reaching effort to develop new technology and solutions that will help enable affordable Internet access and computing capability for 50 percent of the world's population by the year 2015. With the global population estimated to reach 7.2 billion people in 2015, there is tremendous potential for 50x15 to bring billions of people into the digital age.
