SSEN Commences Pentland Firth East cable Replacement Works

Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks is to commence its core work programme to replace one of the two submarine electricity distribution cables connecting Orkney to mainland Scotland, ensuring strengthened resilience of electricity supply to the islands ahead of the coming winter. The GBP 30 million cable replacement project, which received marine licence approval from Marine Scotland earlier this week, sees the installation of a new 33 kilovolt cable which follows the existing route from Murkle Bay, near Thurso, to Rackwick Bay on the island of Hoy.

The subsea cable replacement work will be undertaken by principal contractor, Global Offshore, with the cable expected to arrive by 15 July. Contract partners will support associated programme works, including near shore works, archaeological and ecological checks and works on the existing overhead network on Hoy.

The installation of the new cable will allow for the removal of some sections of existing overhead line on Hoy, to be replaced with underground cable. SSEN expects to complete all works by November, following an extension of the programme to avoid construction during bird breeding season on the island.

SSEN has been working closely with key stakeholders throughout the development of the programme, in recognition of the critical nature of the project, the impact of the coronavirus pandemic and associated travel restrictions.

All contractors working on the project will closely follow current Government guidance with measures taken to protect both the public and the construction teams. These include additional management of work and travel schedules, adherence to social distancing and the use of enhanced personal protective equipment.Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks is to commence its core work programme to replace one of the two submarine electricity distribution cables connecting Orkney to mainland Scotland, ensuring strengthened resilience of electricity supply to the islands ahead of the coming winter. SSEN is undertaking a significant programme of investment to replace around 90km of submarine cables connecting Scotland’s island communities by 2023 – a fifth of the total number currently in operation.

The Pentland Firth East cable was identified for replacement after routine inspections found it was coming to the end of its operational life. In July 2019, SSEN successfully completed repairs to the cable in Rackwick Bay following a cable fault. While customer power supplies were not impacted by this fault, a long-term solution was required to maintain a safe, secure and reliable power supply to homes and businesses in Orkney.

EBRD Concerned About Situation in Ukrainian Renewable Energy Sector

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development is seriously concerned about the current situation in the Ukrainian Renewable Energy Sector. The EBRD welcomed the mediation led by the Energy Community Secretariat between renewable energy investors and the Ukrainian authorities aiming to find a balanced and consensual restructuring of the renewables support scheme. However, while the process has secured agreement in many areas, it continues to raise concerns with many investors, who may face material financial losses if it is implemented in the current form. The Verkhovna Rada is now considering Draft Law 3658, based on the memorandum. While the EBRD supports many of the elements in it, we urge the administration and legislators to continue their dialogue with investors in order to reach a consensual solution which is supported by the sector as a whole.

To date, Ukraine’s renewable sector has delivered more than 5 GW of clean, local electricity generating capacity, creating jobs and paying taxes across the country, while attracting billions of Euros of domestic and foreign investment.

The EBRD therefore urges all stakeholders to preserve this success. A consensual solution would reduce the cost of renewable electricity for consumers while also demonstrating, both at home and abroad, the resilience, stability and predictability of the Ukrainian investment environment.

Repsol Buys Renewables Assets in Chile

Repsol continues its expansion in renewable energy with the signing of an agreement with Grupo Ibereólica Renovables that gives Repsol access to a portfolio in Chile of projects in operation, construction, or development of more than 1,600 MW in 2025, with the possibility, thanks to this agreement, to exceed 2,600 MW in 2030. Repsol and Grupo Ibereólica Renovables will create a joint venture in Chile with each party holding 50%, through an increase of capital of 168 million euros to be disbursed by Repsol through 2023.

The funds incorporated in the increase of capital will strengthen the joint venture’s resources and will allow five renewables projects to be developed and built over the next five years in Chile, with a total installed capacity of more than 1,600 MW, comprising three wind farms and two solar farms.

Repsol thus gains access to quality assets and a good future pipeline in a stable market such as Chile, already well consolidated in the renewable sector and for which growth is forecast thanks to the existence of areas with abundant sun and wind resources.

The joint venture in Chile will have a diversified portfolio of assets (52% wind and 48% solar) which are distributed into 78 MW of renewable generation capacity already in operation, 110 MW under construction, 1,500 MW in advanced stages of development which will be operational in 2025 and another 1,000 MW planned for 2030, located mainly in the northern regions of Antofagasta and Atacama.

The agreement gives the multi-energy company the option to take control of the venture from 2025.
