Nestle Waters Cabazon Plant Installs Third Wind Turbine

Nestlé Waters North America announced the installation and operation commencement of a third wind turbine at its water bottling facility in Cabazon, California. This week also marks the sixth anniversary of the groundbreaking of the facility’s first two wind turbines in 2012.The three turbines combined have a rated capacity of approximately 22 million kilowatt hours a year, and are expected to supply nearly 50 percent of the plant's total electricity needs, while offsetting 18,048 tons of CO2 per year equivalent to the annual emissions from 1,768 homes or 3,506 passenger vehicles.

Developed by industry leader Foundation Windpower, the third turbine takes the company one step closer toward its goal of being 100 percent powered by renewable energy sources.

Mr Alexander Gregorian, Vice President and Head of Technical and Production at Nestlé Waters North America said that “Our team in Cabazon is really helping us lead the way when it comes to creating a more sustainable future. Through their commitment, and with the critical support of partners like Foundation Windpower and the Morongo Band of Mission Indians, we are moving closer and closer to our ultimate goal of being 100 percent renewable.”

Cabazon Factory Manager Gary Rice said that “We want to build on the tremendous progress we’ve made with the first two turbines while continuing to find new ways to improve energy efficiency and reduce our carbon footprint. As a factory, we are proud of our commitment to sustainability, and this installation moves us significantly closer to achieving our renewable energy ambitions.”

Last spring, Nestlé Waters’ Cabazon factory received the country’s first Gold Certification through the Alliance for Water Stewardship, by demonstrating, in addition to water efficiency, that their local operations are making a positive contribution to the local groundwater system, establishing best practices for maintaining the site's water quality, and implementing a water education program in the community.

In addition to these milestones in Cabazon, earlier this year, Nestlé Waters announced a partnership with the Sacramento Municipal Utility District for its factory in Sacramento, California to be powered by 100 percent renewable energy. By transitioning its electrical power needs to renewable sources, the carbon footprint of the Nestlé Waters factory will be reduced by more than 21,279 metric tons of carbon dioxide over the next three years. South Dakota PUC approves Prevailing Wind Park

Wind Power Engineering reported that the South Dakota Public Utilities Commission has approved the construction permit for Prevailing Wind Park, a 219.6-MW wind energy facility in Bon Homme, Charles Mix and Hutchinson counties in southeastern South Dakota. The action came at an ad hoc commiPUC staff.

Prevailing Winds proposed more than 40 conditions that address issues such as road conditions during construction, cultural resources, assignment of a public liaison officer, and land restoration after construction, among other conditions. The Commission delved deep into discussion on several other proposed conditions, making changes to those dealing with shadow flicker, sound level, avian mortality and decommissioning. The final order is expected to be issued by the end of November.

Prevailing Wind Park will include up to 61 wind turbines in a 50,364-acre area. Other components of the project will include access roads, underground collector lines, an operation and maintenance facility and four permanent meteorological towers.

PUC Chairperson Ms Kristie Fiegen noted the commission and staff were faced with a stiff task, processing the complicated construction permit request in six months and giving full weight to the varied considerations of all parties. She concluded that “It’s not easy to strike a balance between the needs and wants of area landowners and the wind industry. In the end, I believe we followed state statute and the authority given to the PUC by the state legislature.”

Commissioner Mr Chris Nelson also spoke to the commission’s authority in granting the permit with conditions. He said that “It is important to understand that the commission has to base its decision on what has been presented in the record during these last six months and what the state law allows us to do. Considering that criteria, we have appropriately integrated competing interests.”

Prevailing Wind Park filed its application with the PUC on May 30, 2018. A public input hearing was held in Avon in July. An evidentiary hearing was held in Pierre in October. Parties to the docket included Prevailing Wind Park, PUC staff and eight intervenors. Intervenors Gregg and Marsha Hubner of Avon, Paul and Lisa Schoenfelder of Wagner, Sherman Fuerniss of Delmont, Karen Jenkins of Tripp and Kelli Pazour of Wagner were active participants at the formal hearing and related proceedings.

Shell gaat groot offshore windpark bouwen in VS

Shell and EDP Renewables JV wins offshore wind auction in US

Mayflower Wind Energy LLC (Mayflower) is the provisional winner of block 0521 in today’s offshore wind auction hosted by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management. Mayflower bid USD 135 million for the exclusive rights to develop the federal commercial wind energy lease on the Outer Continental Shelf located off the coast of Massachusetts. Mayflower is a 50:50 joint venture between EDPR Offshore North America LLC (EDPR) and Shell New Energies US LLC (Shell). Once constructed, the lease area could accommodate a total generation capacity of approximately 1.6 GW, enough to power more than 680,000 average Massachusetts homes with clean electricity each year.

Mr John Hartnett, Director, Mayflower said that “Mayflower’s entry into US offshore wind is exciting and will leverage Shell and EDPR’s years of combined wind development and offshore experience. We commend BOEM on a successful bid round and look forward to working with local groups and communities to realize this opportunity.”

A growing population and rising living standards alongside the need for a reduction in greenhouse-gas emissions will require changes to the energy system. Given this changing energy landscape, Shell is seeking commercial opportunities to expand its existing electricity generation from renewable power, including offshore wind, with the aim of providing customers with more and cleaner energy.

This announcement enables EDPR to increase its growth options in the attractive offshore wind market, thereby enhancing and diversifying the company’s long-term profitable growth options while maintaining a balanced risk profile.

Mayflower will begin working to complete a site assessment plan and initiate formal development efforts on the site, and subject to a positive final investment decision, could bring the wind farm into operation by the mid-2020s.
