Maar hoe en wat als Apple die saffierfabriek wil en hoe/op welke manier dan ook eigenaar worden van die saffierdivisie..........
Laatst hier al geplaatste dat BBRY ook uitkwam met "sterker glas" en ik niet weet wat BBRY ervoor gebruikt etc.........tis 'n item waar de smartphone fabrikanten mee bezig zijn.En dat vind ik ook wel begrijpelijk als ik de gebruikers bezig zie:)

Apple is al eigenaar van de saffierglasfabriek in Mesa, alleen de machines zijn nog van GTAT, maar die zijn door Apple gefinancierd.
Omdat Apple de lening van Apple niet kan terugbetalen wordt Apple automatisch volledig eigenaar van de saffierglasfabriek.

Apple zal deze fabriek wellicht aan een ander verkopen, omdat in feite het hele saffierglasproject mislukt is.
Apple kan waarschijnlijk goedkoper saffierglas kopen in China, ALS ze er nog belangstelling voor hebben.

Of GTAT zelf doorgaat of in stukken verkocht wordt, maakt voor de huidige aandeelhouders (bijna) geen verschil: in beide gevallen krijgen ze (vrijwel) niks.

GTAT verdwijnt zeer snel uit alle indexen en ETF's en uit de boeken van de instituten, die natuurlijk niet meer herinnert willen worden aan deze enorme blunder.

Tera Xtal wins AAA arbitration over dispute with GTAT

Sapphire ingot maker Tera Xtal Technology has disclosed the American Arbitration Association (AAA) has decided that US-based equipment supplier GT Advanced Technologies (GTAT) should return payment Tera Xtal made in 2012 for sapphire crystal growing furnaces which failed to work, plus interest, for a total of US$24.296 million.

Tera Xtal in 2011 placed an order with GTAT for 98 furnaces at a total price of about US$68 million, the company said. The first batch of 30 furnaces were delivered and installed in February 2012, Tera Xtal indicated, adding the performance of the 30 furnaces failed to meet standards specified in the procurement contract.

According to Tera Xtal, it then asked GTAT to solve the problems twice but GTAT did not respond. Tera Xtal finally stopped running the 30 furnaces in October 2012 and, according to the contract, filed with AAA for arbitration asking GTAT return payment already made at the end of 2012.

AAA has ruled that GTAT should return Tera Xtal's payment of US$20.967 million for the 30 furnaces plus interest of US$3.329 million calculated from November 6, 2012 to August 12, 2014 at an annual rate of 9%, Tera Xtal indicated.

Drop Tests

Apple had originally planned to use sapphire for the screen of its latest iPhone models before switching back to Corning’s Gorilla Glass because of concerns that there wouldn’t be enough supply, said a person with knowledge of the plans. The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus became available in September, selling more than 10 million units during their opening weekend, a record.

The sheets of sapphire produced by GT Advanced kept failing technical benchmarks, including drop tests, according to people familiar with both companies who asked not to be identified because the information is private. Weaknesses caused during the process of cutting and grinding is the main difficulty in sapphire and isn’t a problem limited to GT Advanced, the people said.

Jeff Nestel-Patt, a spokesman for GT Advanced, declined to comment, while Apple said it was surprised by the bankruptcy filing.

“We are focused on preserving jobs in Arizona following GT’s surprising decision and we will continue to work with state and local officials as we consider our next steps,” Chris Gaither, a spokesman for Apple, said in a statement.

Technical Challenges

Synthetic sapphire is grown as a crystal in factories in a process that takes as long as 18 days to produce 100 kilograms (220 pounds). Its physical properties mean that the larger the piece, the more prone it is to splitting from the edges when microscopic cracks are introduced during the cut and grind process, the people said. Those challenges mean that a key test -- dropping the sapphire from a height -- reveals weaknesses and reduces yield, or the amount of material that can be used in final products.

Apple was so keen on making the arrangement with GT Advanced work that it had been working closely with the company, trying to overcome the technical challenges and to become cash-flow positive, a person familiar with the effort said.

Sapphire Furnaces

While GT Advanced had enough furnaces to equip 10 million iPhone 6 Plus smartphones per production cycle, its yield rate was about 40 percent, according to LEDinside, a subsidiary of the Taiwan-based market-intelligence firm TrendForce Corp.

“The problem cannot be solved before product release,” Roger Chu, research director of LEDinside, wrote in an e-mailed statement.

Manufacturing large amounts of sapphire wasn’t GT Advanced’s business prior to its relationship with Apple. GT Advanced had mainly sold raw materials and equipment to the solar industry, and the acquisition of Crystal Systems Inc., a manufacturer of furnaces used to grow crystals, in 2010 put them into the sapphire-material business.

The company’s “sapphire business was traditionally based on designing and selling advanced sapphire crystallization furnaces, which are used to produce sapphire,” GT Advanced Chief Operating Officer Daniel Squiller said in an affidavit filed as part of the bankruptcy. “As a result of a series of transactions with a key customer in 2013, the GTAT Group’s sapphire business model shifted from being primarily an equipment manufacturer to also being a sapphire materials manufacturer.”

In other words, GT Advanced went from manufacturing the tools to making the products.
Borrowed Time

Total revenue from sapphire reached 62 percent during the first six months of the year, he said. In August, GT Advanced reported a second-quarter net loss of $86 million, about double the prior period and compared with a profit of $12 million a year earlier.

GT Advanced ended the second quarter with $333 million in cash and cash equivalents, and CEO Gutierrez said in August that the company was on track to end the year with about $400 million in cash. Instead, it finished the third quarter with about $85 million, according to a court affidavit.

“As you know from prior history, this business really starts to generate cash once the order flow and the revenue flow starts to move,” the CEO said on Aug. 5.

GT Advanced did not disclose the identity of the third-party or the nature of the potential contract violations.

In a filing with the U.S. bankruptcy court in New Hampshire, early on Thursday, the company also requested an "in camera" hearing to deal with its request.

An "in camera" hearing is not open to the public.

The first hearing of GT Advanced's Chapter 11 bankruptcy is scheduled for Thursday at 10 a.m. ET.

The company has offered little explanation for its surprise bankruptcy filing on Monday.

GT Advanced has a deal with Apple that involves building an Arizona factory to make scratch-resistant sapphire glass exclusively for the iPhone and iPad maker.

Kortom, er valt niets te zeggen over de uitkomst.

Mijn gevoel zegt me dat een business-model, gevalideerd op 1,5 miljard tot afgelopen vrijdag, niet zomaar ineens 95% waarde kan verliezen.

Dit is nog de grootste minachting van de aandeelhouders die eerst goed zijn om geld te storten, dit (grotendeels) kwijtraken en vervolgens alleen maar mogen gissen waarom. Echt schandalig. (of dit ergens in een contract is afgesproken of niet)

Ik heb al eerder verteld dat beide partijen enorm geblunderd hebben en er dus alle belang bij hebben dat e.e.a. geheim blijft, zelfs nu de overeenkomst in feite beëindigd is.
Ik vraag me af hoe de SEC daar over denkt.

Ik verwacht ook dat Apple over het 3e kwartaal flinke bedragen moet gaan afschrijven, ik ben benieuwd of ze dat kunnen wegmoffelen, dit soort bedragen vallen niet echt op bij Apple.
