Two new wind farms to be built off Polish coast

Polish state-owned energy company PGE Baltica has presented an update to its proposals to build two wind farms in the Baltic Sea at the Maritime Economy Forum. Work on the wind farms, which will generate 2.5 GW of power combined, is due to start in 2022 and be installed by 2035. The proposed farms are situated 20 km from the Polish coastline and are expected to create maintenance work for 18 years with the first electricity coming online from 2025–26. With 9 m/s average speed of the wind blades, the Baltic provides a good location for the farms, Radoslaw Pachecki from PGE said. He added that while the Atlantic was only being developed as a location for wind farms – owing to unknowns such as water depths and wave behaviour, the Baltic will rank second in terms of offshore wind production in the future with a capacity of 12 GW, surpassed by the North Sea locations. Pachecki said that in 2030, 4.6 GW will be generated in the Baltic, and 10 GW will be generated by 2040. This translates to a quarter of Poland’s current total power consumption.

Mr Wojciech Szczurek, the mayor of Gdynia said that “Poland’s current energy demand is 41 GW and growing,” he said. “But coal is not the future and it is estimated that by 2035 it will be necessary to close down 20 gigawatts of aging coal power stations in Poland. As a result, there is a massive responsibility to make the Baltic wind farm happen.”

To help support the Baltic wind farm project, two of the prime organisations leading Poland’s offshore sector have signed an agreement as part of the forum. The Polish Offshore Wind Energy Society and the Polish Maritime Technology Forum partnership will encourage knowledge exchange and co-operation between a wide range of businesses and stakeholders in the offshore and maritime sector.

Windfloat Atlantic Begins Shifting of Wind Power Unit

The first WindFloat Atlantic unit has set off for its final destination off the Portuguese coast of Viana do Castelo, where the exploitation of the floating wind farm will take place. Since it can be located in very deep waters, WindFloat can access energy resources in extremely large marine areas in order to address major social challenges, such as the transition to cleaner energy, energy security and climate change, by time that generates jobs, economic growth and opportunities for sustainable investment.

The first platform with the fully installed Windfloat Atlantic wind turbine has departed from the Spanish port of Ferrol towards its final destination 20 km off the coast of Viana do Castelo, in Portugal. Once it reaches its final location, the three floating structures, with a height of 30 meters and a distance of 50 meters between each of its columns , will be installed and form the first floating wind farm in continental Europe.

The structure that has departed from the outer port of Ferrol encompasses a floating platform and a wind turbine, the largest ever installed on a surface of these characteristics. In the coming months, the other two platforms will be incorporated to complete the wind farm that, with its 25 MW of installed capacity, will be able to generate enough energy to supply the equivalent of 60,000 users per year.

Highview Power to Develop Multiple Cryogenic Energy Storage Facilities in the UK

EBRD Invests in TERNA ENERGY Green Bond

The EBRD is stepping up its efforts to support renewables in Greece by supporting TERNA ENERGY with an EUR 18 million investment in the Greek company’s successful issuance of a seven-year EUR 150 million green bond. The funds will finance additional investments in renewable energy projects in Greece. The projects will also contribute to the country’s target of increasing the share of renewable energy to 35% of its total energy consumption by 2030. The investment is part of the EBRD’s Greek Corporate Bonds Framework, developed to extend the Bank’s support for the local corporate bond market and to strengthen its long-term viability.

TERNA ENERGY is the largest wind-electricity producer in Greece. It has 1,512 MW of renewable energy power plants in operation or under construction, primarily wind farms, located in Bulgaria, Greece, Poland and the United States of America.

Ernst & Young has verified that the bond meets the Climate Bonds Initiative’s classification as a certified climate bond.

The EBRD's participation in the bond issuance is expected to boost market confidence and contribute to building scale and critical mass for listed bond issuances. This can demonstrate the use of a financial instrument that is not yet widely utilised by Greek corporates, including the issuance of green bonds.

First Turbine of WindFloat Atlantic Moves into Position

The largest and most powerful wind turbine to be used in a floating wind project, the V164-8.4 MW turbine from MHI Vestas, is now in place atop Principle Power’s WindFloat semi-submersible foundation. The first V164-8.4 MW turbine for WindFloat Atlantic was installed onto the WindFloat triangular platform at the quayside in Ferrol (northern Spain) before making the 250km journey to its final destination.

The pioneering, three-turbine project is slated to provide enough wind energy for 60,000 people and promises to deliver vital learnings in installation and commissioning techniques, turbine performance and foundation performance.

Once fully installed, the floating offshore wind farm will comprise three V164-8.4 MW turbines with a tip height of 190 meters atop Principle Power’s triangular, semi-submersible WindFloat foundations and will be located at a sea depth of 100 meters.

Flemming Ougaard, MHI Vestas Chief Operations Officer said that “We’re breaking new ground with the WindFloat Atlantic installation, so we’re intent on gathering the necessary data and insights to carry forward into future floating offshore wind projects.”

KOPENHAGEN (AFN/RTR) - Het Deense energieagentschap heeft groen licht gegeven voor de komst van Nord Stream 2. Daarmee lijkt de laatste grote horde genomen voor de nieuwe pijpleiding door de Oostzee om delen van Europa van Russisch gas te voorzien. Andere benodigde vergunningen waren al binnen.

Het project van het Russische staatsbedrijf Gazprom wordt medegefinancierd door vijf Europese energiebedrijven, waaronder Shell. Om Nord Stream 2 is al lang veel te doen. In sommige Europese landen ligt de pijpleiding gevoelig omdat Europa hierdoor meer afhankelijk zou worden van Russisch gas.

De Verenigde Staten mengden zich ook in de discussie en dreigden eerder dit jaar zelfs met sancties tegen bedrijven die betrokken zijn bij de aanleg ervan. Het gaat bijvoorbeeld om baggeraars Van Oord en Boskalis.

Bakker Magnetics to Supply Magnetic Assemblies for Haliade-x Wind Turbines to GE Renewables

Bakker Magnetics announced that it is selected to manufacture and supply the magnetic assemblies for the Haliade-X wind turbine that GE Renewable Energy is currently introducing in the market. The Haliade-X is the most powerful offshore wind turbine in the world to date, featuring a 12 MW capacity (the world’s first) and a height of 260 meter. Bakker Magnetics is selected based on more than 45 years of experience in assembling powerful permanent magnets on rotors and carriers. The first prototype of the Haliade-X is currently erected at the Maasvlakte in Rotterdam.

The Haliade-X’s vast rotor will harness wind from a 38,000 square metre swept-area to turn a hulking, digitally-controlled direct-drive and permanent-magnet-generator transmission system with magnet assemblies produced by Bakker Magnetics. Over the past few months, the turbine components have arrived from factories across Western Europe at the project site, located on the quayside of what is the continent’s biggest port.

First Borssele III & IV Monopile in Place by Van Oord's offshore Installation Vessel Aeolus

After two years of preparation, the first monopile has been installed for the Borssele III & IV offshore wind farm by Van Oord's offshore installation vessel Aeolus. In the coming months, Van Oord will place a total of 77 monopiles for the Borssele III & IV and 2 for the innovation site Borssele V. The Borssele III & IV wind farm will be built 22 kilometres off the coast of the Province of Zeeland and will be one of the largest offshore Dutch wind farms. The start of the monopiles installation is a milestone in the construction of the project and the subsequent cable laying and installation of 77 V164 9.5 megawatts (MW) of wind turbines supplied by MHI Vestas. Van Oord is performing the Balance of Plant activities, consisting of the engineering, supply and construction of the foundations and connecting cables. The Borssele Beta offshore transformer station will be designed and built by TenneT and is scheduled to be operational by the beginning of 2021.

At the end of December 2016, the Blauwwind consortium won the tender to build the Borssele III & IV offshore wind farm. Blauwwind consists of Partners Group (45%), Shell (20%), DGE (15%), Eneco Group (10%) and Van Oord (10%). The consortium has signed Power Purchase Agreements with Shell and Eneco Group, which stipulate that they will both purchase 50% of the energy generated by the wind farms for a period of 15 years.

The construction of the Borssele III & IV wind farm will make an important contribution to the Dutch climate objectives. The Borssele III & IV offshore wind farm will have a total installed capacity of 731.5 MW, providing sufficient power for approximately 825,000 Dutch households. The wind farm is part of the offshore wind roadmap drawn up by the Dutch government. The roadmap details the areas designated in the North Sea where offshore wind farms can be built.

Equinor Awards Hywind Tampen Wind Farm Contracts

On behalf of the Gullfaks and Snorre partners, Equinor signed contracts totalling around NOK 3.3 billion for the Hywind Tampen wind farm development. The contracts have been awarded to Kværner AS, Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy AS, JDR Cable System Ltd and Subsea 7 AS.

Mr Anders Opedal, Equinor’s executive vice president for Technology, projects & drilling said that “The signing of five major contracts is a key milestone in realizing the Hywind Tampen pioneer project. Won in international competition, the contracts prove that the oil and gas industry is also competitive for renewables projects. The awarded contracts will generate considerable spin-offs in Norway.”

The substructures will be designed and constructed by Kværner, allowing the company to utilize its expertise in concrete structures on the Norwegian continental shelf for this contract.

The substructures will be constructed at Kværner’s yard at Stord and site at Dommersnes in the Vindafjord in Norway. The contract includes assembly activities, tow-out and installation of completed wind turbines. The project will involve several Norwegian engineering communities.

DEN HAAG (AFN/BLOOMBERG) - Olie- en gasbedrijf Shell neemt het Franse windenergiebedrijf Eolfi over. Dat bedrijf ontwikkelt onder meer drijvende windparken. Financiële details voor de overname heeft Shell niet bekendgemaakt.

Shell koopt de laatste tijd meer bedrijven die zich bezig houden met hernieuwbare energie. Binnen vijftien jaar wil het Nederlands-Britse olie- en gasconcern de grootste leverancier van schone energie ter wereld worden.

Met de aankoop van Eolfi krijgt Shell ook een positie op de Franse markt, een van de grootste voor drijvende windmolens. Eolfi heeft tweehonderd projecten op het gebied van hernieuwbare energie ontwikkeld in vijf landen, zowel aan land als op zee. De onderneming heeft 65 werknemers in Parijs en in kustplaatsen Lorient, Montpellier en Marseille.

Shell verwacht dat de deal volgende maand rondkomt.

Enlight Renewable awards Vestas Order for 113 MW Wind Farm in Sweden

Vestas has secured an order from Enlight Renewable Energy for the 113 MW wind project Målarberget in Norberg County, Sweden. Vestas has developed a solution to fit the site’s wind conditions that includes 27 V150-4.2 MW turbines and a 30-year Active Output Management AOM 5000 service agreement to optimise energy production for the lifetime of the project. With this project, Vestas’ surpasses 400 MW order intake for the V150-4.2 MW turbine in Sweden, underlining the variant’s strong fit for the Swedish wind energy market. This is Vestas’ third order of V150-4.2 MW turbines in the country this year, taking Vestas’ total order intake in Sweden over the years past 4.3 GW and further strengthening its market leadership.

The contract includes supply, installation and commissioning of the wind turbines, and the project will feature a VestasOnline® Business SCADA solution to lower turbine downtime and optimise the energy output. Turbine delivery is scheduled for the third quarter of 2020, while commissioning is expected to start in the fourth quarter of the same year.

ABB Open New Production Plant for Energy Storage Systems in Baden

ABB has opened its new plant for energy storage systems for mobility applications in Baden, Switzerland, at a ceremony attended by customers, politicians and media representatives. The energy storage systems will be used in railways, e-buses/trolleybuses and e-trucks. The facility represents an important investment in Switzerland as a production location and provides added value for applications at home and abroad.

Energy storage systems are a key technology for the future of sustainable mobility and play an important role in the field of electrification and decarbonization of road and rail transport: Efficient energy stores are essential for the operation of electric buses and e-trucks and allow, for example, the braking energy generated by recuperation to be stored. Moreover, the energy storage systems increase the flexibility of trolleybuses as they can drive long distances without overhead lines thanks to this technology.

Unlike in Switzerland, many other European countries still have countless non-electrified railway lines. Integration of energy storage systems makes it possible to convert Diesel trainsets into Diesel hybrid vehicles, thus cutting CO2 emissions by 30% with the possibility of achieving significant energy savings through recuperation. Energy storage systems offer transport operators many options to retrofit their vehicle fleets for a more sustainable mobility.

Nord Stream 2 Granted a Construction Permit by Denmark

Nord Stream 2 AG obtained the permit to construct its planned pipeline system in the Danish Exclusive Economic Zone south-east of Bornholm. The permit was granted by the Danish Energy Agency, which is in charge of the application, and covers a 147-km-long route section. Preparatory works, such as the installation of concrete mattresses and rock placement for the crossing of existing infrastructure (cables and pipelines), and the subsequent pipelay, will start in the coming weeks. The Danish section of the pipeline will be built with pipes currently stored in Mukran, on the German island of Rügen.

As of today, more than 2,100 km of the Nord Stream 2 Pipeline have been laid. Pipelay has been completed in Russian, Finnish and Swedish waters, and for the most part in German waters. The construction of both landfall facilities in Russia and Germany is nearing completion.

A/S Norske Shell Awards OneSubsea Integrated Subsea Compression Frame Agreement for Ormen Lange

Schlumberger announced an award to OneSubsea by A/S Norske Shell of a frame agreement for an engineering, procurement, construction and installation contract for the supply of a subsea multiphase compression system for the Ormen Lange Field in the Norwegian Sea. Through the EPCI contract, OneSubsea, the subsea technologies, production and processing systems division of Schlumberger, and its Subsea Integration Alliance partner Subsea7 will supply and install a subsea multiphase compression system that uses the industry’s only subsea multiphase compression technology. OneSubsea will, in the first phase of the project, do the engineering and design of the complete system. Following the final investment decision by the license group, the complete scope of the EPCI will be executed.

The compression system will be powered and controlled from the Nyhamna onshore gas processing plant, which is 120 km from the subsea location. This tieback distance is also a world record for transmitting variable speed power from an onshore facility to equipment on the seabed.

The system will be installed at 850 m of water depth and comprises two 16-MW subsea compression stations tied into existing manifolds and pipelines. This multiphase compression system is surge tolerant, does not require wellstream preprocessing, and is adaptable to the varying conditions over the life of the field.

Grootste zonnepark van Nederland aangesloten op elektriciteitsnet TenneT

Het grootste zonnepark van Nederland is gestart met de productie van zonnestroom. De 316.216 zonnepanelen die geplaatst zijn door Chint Solar / Astronergy voorziet ten minste 32.000 huishoudens van stroom.

Het zonnepark langs de A7 tussen Kolham en Sappemeer is het grootste van Nederland en het eerste dat direct is aangesloten op het hoogspanningsnet van Tennet.

Lange geschiedenis
Zonnepark Midden-Groningen kent een lange geschiedenis. Aan de komst van het zonnepark is meer dan 5 jaar gewerkt. In 2016 nam Chint Solar de projectrechten van zonnepark Midden-Groningen over van Powerfield. Chint Solar heeft daarna samen met omwonenden een landschapsontwerp gemaakt om het zonnepark zo goed mogelijk in de omgeving in te passen. Dit gebeurt onder meer met een groenstrook tussen de woningen en het zonnepark. Deze groenstrook heeft verschillende zones met grasvelden, bloemenvelden, bosschages en een parkje. Met deze inrichting is het voor vogels, vlinders en wild een prettige plek om te verblijven.

Zonnepark Midden-Groningen levert via het 110-kilovolt-hoogspanningsstation Kropswolde elektriciteit aan het hoogspanningsnet van TenneT. Diederik Apotheker van Chint Solar / Astronergy licht de totstandkoming van de netaansluiting in onderstaande video toe.

Wel is inmiddels de bouw van een nog groter zonnepark gestart. In de gemeente Westerwolde komt namelijk een zonnepark met 350.000 zonnepanelen en 20 hectare bessen. Impax en Solarcentury hebben hiertoe in september de bouw- en onderhoudsovereenkomst getekend.
