Trump klaagt opnieuw over rentetarieven Fed

WASHINGTON (AFN) - De Amerikaanse president Donald Trump heeft opnieuw benadrukt dat hij vindt dat de rentes in de Verenigde Staten omlaag kunnen. Via Twitter beklaagde hij zich over de koepel van centrale banken in de VS, de Federal Reserve, die volgens hem te hoge rentetarieven hanteert.

Het is zeker niet voor het eerst dat Trump kritiek heeft op het beleid van de Fed. De president heeft vaker geroepen dat het opkrikken van de rente slecht is voor de Amerikaanse economie. Hij ziet meer heil in een renteverlaging.

De Fed wil daar niet aan, mede omdat het in de VS economisch op veel vlakken juist erg goed gaat. De banengroei is bijvoorbeeld erg sterk. Toch sluit de Fed eventuele renteverlagingen niet uit, bijvoorbeeld om de inflatie aan te jagen. Trump noemde de lage inflatie in de VS een mooi gegeven.

Verder beschuldigde Trump Europa, maar ook andere economisch machtsblokken, van het manipuleren van de waarde van valuta. Daarvan zijn volgens hem de VS de dupe.

WASHINGTON — Late at night, using his old personal cellphone number, President Trump has been calling former advisers who have not heard from him in years, eager to discuss his standing in the polls against the top Democrats in the field — specifically Joseph R. Biden Jr., whom he describes in those conversations as “too old” and “not as popular as people think.”

When it came to the campaign, his main focus was on his own approval numbers.

He has shown no interest in formulating a new message for his campaign, instead continuing with the winning “Make America Great Again” slogan from his last race and adding that he also wants to “keep America great.”

He will also attend a fund-raising dinner for the state Republican Party chairman, Jeffrey Kaufmann, an event his campaign aides said they had wanted to get on the books for months, as a way to incentivize other state party leaders to work hard on behalf of Mr. Trump.

“He didn’t win Iowa in our caucuses, but he still maintained Iowa as a special state for him,” Mr. Kaufmann said. “I’ve visited with him in the Oval Office, and every single time he not only shows his support for our state, but he shows he understands the issues out here.”

This event — along with a winter and spring of MAGA rallies, mostly in reliable states — will be a rehearsal for next week. Mr. Trump, hoping to turn the attention of the race back onto himself, will officially kick off his re-election campaign on June 18 with a mega-rally in Florida, a state he must win in 2020 but where his numbers are softer than the campaign would like.

But just a week before the rally, Mr. Trump continues to function without a chief political strategist, people involved in his campaigns said. The president’s lead pollster, Mr. Fabrizio, is someone Mr. Trump resisted hiring in 2016, and his blunt approach is not always welcome by a candidate who prefers good news and can take a shoot-the-messenger approach to receiving information he does not like.

Michael Bloomberg Promises USD 500 Million to Help End Coal

NY Times reported that Mr Michael R Bloomberg, the former mayor of New York City, would donate USD 500 million to a new campaign to close every coal-fired power plant in the United States and halt the growth of natural gas. The new campaign, called Beyond Carbon, is designed to help eliminate coal by focusing on state and local governments. The effort will bypass Washington, where Mr. Bloomberg has said national action appears unlikely because of a divided Congress and a president who denies the established science of climate change.

Mr Bloomberg said in a statement before the announcement, which he made in a commencement address at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology that “We’re in a race against time with climate change, and yet there is virtually no hope of bold federal action on this issue for at least another two years. Mother Nature is not waiting on our political calendar, and neither can we.”

President Trump has made reviving what he has called “clean, beautiful coal” a cornerstone of his energy agenda.

A spokesman for Mr Bloomberg said most of the money would be spent over the next three years, though the time frame could be extended. It will fund lobbying efforts by environmental groups in state legislatures, City Councils and public utility commissions that aim to close coal plants and replace them with wind, solar and other renewable power. Part of the cash also will go toward efforts to elect local lawmakers who prioritize clean energy.

The campaign will be based on the need to avoid the most dangerous effects of climate change, but will also emphasize the economic benefits of switching to clean energy.

Speelt de viering zich, als te doen gebruikelijk, af in het park of verhuist de boel naar het Lincoln Memorial? Zet Trump zijn plannen door voor een speech vanaf het monument? En als hij dat doet, is de toespraak dan toegankelijk voor iedereen? Laat het Witte Huis-demonstranten toe bij het doorgaans a-politieke evenement, of bestaat het publiek alleen uit Trump-supporters?

,,De gemeente worstelt om uit te zoeken wat we moeten doen’’, zegt Eleanor Holmes Norton, vertegenwoordiger voor het District of Colombia in het Congres. De volksvertegenwoordiger vermoedt dat er nog niet één vergadering over de festiviteiten is geweest. ,,We hebben alleen een vaag idee van wat het Witte Huis wil.’’

‘Ze weten van niets’

Norton nam contact op met parkbeheer, maar die konden haar niets wijzer maken. ,,Ze wilden ons niets vertellen. Weet je waarom? Omdat ze zelf niets weten!’ Het congreslid voorspelt voor beveiligers een ware nachtmerrie, waarbij de locatie, vorm en route zo laat bekend worden gemaakt dat ze ‘er hoofdpijn van krijgen’.

De viering van Onafhankelijkheidsdag trekt doorgaans tienduizenden bezoekers naar The Mall. De nationale feestdag wordt daar traditiegetrouw afgesloten met een groots vuurwerk. Zelfs sinds de aanslagen in New York in 2001, waarna de beveiliging in Washington fors werd verzwaard, zijn de 4 juli-feestelijkheden soepel verlopen.
Kans voor protest

Sommige anti-Trump-activisten zien in de ontstane warboel een uitgelezen kans de zaak te verstieren. Anderen vermoeden in een val te trappen. ,,Het gebeurt niet vaak dat de president zijn opwachting maakt op een openbare plek, waarbij niet gegarandeerd is dat het publiek hem goed gezind is’’, zegt Medea Benjamin, die van plan is met betogers naar Washington te trekken.

,,Het wordt echt heel lastig om de boel in de hand te houden’’, denkt de voorzitster van de feministische anti-oorlogsbeweging Code Pink. ,,We zullen eens zien wat voor rotzooi we kunnen trappen.’’ Nadine Bloch, een lokale demonstrant met tientallen jaren ervaring als het aankomt op protesteren, denkt dat dat weleens verkeerd kan uitpakken.

Rep. Kevin Brady (R-Tex.), a lead architect of the GOP tax bill, suggested Tuesday the tax cuts may not fully pay for themselves, contradicting a promise Republicans made repeatedly while pushing the law in late 2017.

Pressed about what portion of the tax cuts were fully paid for, Brady said it was “hard to know."

“We will know in year 8, 9 or 10 what revenues it brought in to the government over time. So it’s way too early to tell,” said Brady at the Peterson Foundation’s annual Fiscal Summit in Washington D.C.

The federal government’s deficit typically shrinks during strong economic times, but the deficit is up nearly 40 percent so far this fiscal year, according to the latest Congressional Budget Office report released Friday.

...Corporate tax receipts are down after Republicans enacted the largest reduction in business taxes in U.S. history. Individual income taxes are basically flat this year (they are growing less than the rate of inflation). Most of the revenue increase is coming from President Trump’s tariffs and more payroll taxes, which were not cut in the tax bill.

“Revenue fell, it didn’t rise, after the tax cuts,” said Marc Goldwein, senior policy director for the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget.

Brady’s comments are a marked departure from the claim many Republicans made during the tax bill debate that the tax cuts would be fully paid for by additional economic growth that would, in turn, spur additional tax revenues for government coffers.
