Gas Could Overtake Oil As The Largest U.S. Energy Source This Year

For now, everything is only a forecast. It is difficult to accept as fact that a little more than 20 years from now, half of all vehicles on the world’s roads will be electric, although it is a possibility with the right buyer incentives. What is not so difficult to accept as fact is the rise of gas and the fall of oil. The former will be quicker than the latter, however, and this bears reminding. Whenever oil peaks, it will not put a sudden end to oil consumption. The decline will be gradual, even with billions of EVs and windmills.

Essar Power commissions 337 km Mahan-Sipat transmission line

Economic Times reported that Essar Power has commissioned the 337 km Mahan-Sipat transmission line that will help its 1;200 MW Mahan thermal power plant in Madhya Pradesh to transmit the electricity generated. The 400 kV line is the final leg of a 465-km transmission system that has been built at an investment of 72.400 crore. The Mahan-Sipat transmission line is part of an inter-state transmission system that has been built by Essar Power Transmission Co, an arm of Essar Power. It extends from Mahan in Madhya Pradesh to Sipat pooling station in Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh, which is connected to the national grid.

Essar Power Ltd executive vice chairman Pradeep Mittal said that “The commissioning of these transmission lines is a major milestone for Essar Power and will help us access a nationwide market for the power generated from our Mahan plant. It has also helped establish our presence as a key player in the power transmission sector.”

Essar’s power generation capacity now stands at 3,830 MW across six coal- and gas-fired plants in India and one in Canada.

India to add 25 GW renewable energy every year till 2030 – Mr Sumant Sinha

Economic Times quoted ReNew Power Chairman and CEO Sumant Sinha as saying that India should add 25 Gw renewable power capacity every year till 2030 in order to achieve its green energy targets. As part of Paris climate agreement, India has committed to ensure 40 per cent of its installed electricity capacity is based on non-fossil fuel sources by 2030. Speaking at the RE-Invest Summit here Sinha shared ReNew Power's success story. The company currently operated 96 projects across eight states and has raised around INR 6,700 crore in equity apart from generating direct employment. He said that “Move forward with your plans as a startup. Be careful of projects selection and execution. In the Indian Renewable Energy sector, opportunities are vast. So, think long term. Put the right process and systems, instill confidence in capital providers and have strong corporate governance.”

He said the country is on a growth trajectory and is overcoming obstacles for growth successfully.

Power minister RK Singh had last month said the share of renewable energy in India’s electricity mix is set to increase to around 55 per cent by 2030, as the country continues to expand its installed capacity in the face of growing power demand.

Bioenergy leads growth in renewable energy consumption to 2023-IEA

Bioenergy from liquid biofuels and biogas will lead growth in renewable energy consumption to 2023, due to its rising use in the heating and transport sectors. According to the International Energy Agency, overall, renewable energy will continue to grow to 2023, accounting for 40 percent of energy consumption growth as countries cut their greenhouse gas emissions to try and keep global warming in check. IEA said in an annual report on renewables that while growth in solar and wind power is set to continue in the electricity sector, bioenergy will remain the largest source of renewable energy.

Dr Fatih Birol, the IEA’s Executive Director said that "Modern bioenergy is the overlooked giant of the renewable energy field. Its share in the world’s total renewables consumption is about 50% today, in other words as much as hydro, wind, solar and all other renewables combined. We expect modern bioenergy will continue to lead the field, and has huge prospects for further growth. But the right policies and rigorous sustainability regulations will be essential to meet its full potential.”Mr Fatih Birol IEA's executive director said that "Modern bioenergy is the overlooked giant of the renewable energy field.” He added that "Its share in the world's total renewables consumption is about 50 percent today, in other words as much as hydro, wind, solar and all other renewables combined.”

The focus on bioenergy is part of the IEA’s analysis of “blind spots” of the energy system issues that are critical to the evolution of the energy sector but that receive less attention than they deserve such as the impact of air conditioners on electricity demand, or the growing impact of petrochemicals on global oil demand. Assuming strong sustainability measures are in force, the report identifies additional untapped potential for bioenergy to “green” and diversify energy usage in the industry and transport sectors.

India’s renewable energy capacity to reach 140 GW by 2023 - CRISIL

Economic Times reported that India’s renewable energy generation capacity is expected to reach 140 Gigawatt (GW) by 2022-23 and solar power would account for around a half of this followed by wind energy with 40%. Research and ratings agency CRISIL said in a report that the government is planning to ramp up the country’s green energy capacity base to 175 GW by 2022 from the current 72 GW. The report further said that “Continued government thrust, expected drop in levelised cost of energy, and economical tariffs compared with conventional sources are expected to benefit the renewable energy juggernaut.”

It added that government’s global commitment to reduce carbon emissions and availability of foreign funding at attractive rates would also support the growth of the renewable energy sector.

According to CRISIL, the installed capacity of renewable energy sector has witnessed a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 18.5 per cent between 2013-14 and 2017-18. The ratings agency said that “Major traction was observed in solar power, whose installed capacity grew at a breakneck speed to 22 GW in financial year 2017-18 – over eight times compared with financial year 2013-14.”

It said that this was driven by cost-competitiveness achieved due to falling module prices, centralised procurement from credit-worthy central government entities such as Solar Energy Corporation of India and NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam, and availability of finance at lower costs.

Brazil's Bolsonaro plans hydro, nuclear plants to tackle power shortfall

Reuters reported that Far right presidential candidate Jair Bolsonaro plans to tackle Brazil's chronic energy shortages head-on by expanding nuclear power and hydroelectric energy despite environmental concerns over the impact of new dams on the Amazon, the retired general devising his infrastructure program told Reuters. Mr Oswaldo Ferreira, one of half a dozen retired generals advising the election front-runner, said a Bolsonaro government would complete Brazil's corruption-plagued Angra 3 nuclear power station on the coast between Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro at whatever the cost.

He also said a Bolsonaro government would push ahead with the massive Belo Monte hydro dam on the Xingu river, a tributary of the Amazon, which was criticized for displacing indigenous communities. Shelved plans for other dams in the Amazon basin could also be revived.

Mr Ferreira said private investors would be called on to help build the infrastructure Brazil needs and that environmental factors would be fully taken into account.

Belo Monte and other hydro plans for the Amazon, the world's largest tropical rainforest, have been slammed by environmentalists for harming its biodiversity.

Mr Bolsonaro, a 63-year-old former army captain-turned-congressman favored by financial markets, fell just short of an outright majority in Sunday's election. He will face leftist Fernando Haddad, a former Sao Paulo mayor, in a second-round ballot on Oct. 28.

Popular with Brazil's powerful evangelical and farming lobby, Bolsonaro has pledged to pull Brazil out of the Paris Agreement climate deal due to disagreements over how the Amazon should be protected.
