Logica launches Aurora, the next generation of Defence Spectrum Management Capability

18 June 2009

Logica, a leading IT and business services company, today launched its new Defence Spectrum Management capability, Aurora. This new solution is designed to provide the next generation of integrated Spectrum Management tools and services for the modern battlefield. Aurora builds upon Spectrum Management tool development work for the UK Ministry of Defence’s Pilot Battlespace Spectrum Management System (PBSMS) programme. Aurora provides additional functionality in support of the equipment acquisition and spectrum trading communities as well as a full suite of operational tools to manage the spectrum demands of the ever increasing number of spectrum dependent military systems.

Logica will be showcasing Aurora as part of the 2009 Coalition Warrior Interoperability Demonstration (CWID) in a representative secure networked war-fighting environment. The Aurora suite of tools addresses the need for web-centric, dynamic management of the spectrum. The system supports the core objective of CWID 2009, to showcase Joint Battlespace Management (JBM) providing dynamic spectrum management, spectrum awareness and spectrum governance. The Recognised Spectrum Picture and related Spectrum Information Services are made available to other networked users to ensure Spectrum is considered in the military decision making process.

CWID is a unique Ministry of Defence (MOD) and industry partnership. The annual event is one of the largest research event of its kind in the world; connecting 15 countries in a virtual scenario to demonstrate ground-breaking technology, involving real data and role play, all operating on a realistic secure network. The simulation is used to demonstrate end-to-end C4ISTAR capability, identifying the strengths and weaknesses as well as highlighting interoperability. CWID 2009 aims to demonstrate solutions which support the minimisation of risk to meet the Networked Enabled Capability 1st Milestone Statement for 2012. Spectrum Management is one of the key focus areas for demonstration, in recognition of the impact that spectrum related incidents are having on UK forces in operational theatres.

The importance of spectrum management in current operational theatres has made Aurora a particularly exciting part of this year’s CWID. Logica’s Aurora solution will provide a range of services throughout CWID, allowing the Battlespace Spectrum Manager to administer the requirements of Commanders, Planners and owners of Spectrum Dependent Systems to achieve optimal use of spectrum availability. It will provide an important capability to control this increasingly congested, volatile and highly valued resource.

Commenting on this year’s demonstration, Ed Jones, Managing Director Space and Defence, Logica, said “The huge increase in defence systems that require spectrum allocation to ensure their operational effectiveness has highlighted the importance of developing a world class Spectrum Management capability. Aurora will enable the entire defence community from acquisition authorities to battlespace planners to optimise spectrum use, providing direct benefits to the warfighter”.

Utilising open standards and providing a service based architecture means that Aurora is able to be tightly integrated with broader services and organisational processes. The CWID scenario will be used to show how effectively Aurora fits with the way in which defence conducts its operational business.

At this year’s demonstration, Logica has worked with industry partner ATDI and in collaboration with the IIS IPT, Cap ISTAR, E3A and CIO/J6, to demonstrate Aurora’s ability to provide dynamic end-to-end spectrum services, integrated with C2 and ISTAR systems. Aurora will be operated and evaluated by experienced Battlespace Spectrum Managers from the new Defence Spectrum Organisation.

“We are pleased to welcome Logica’s launch of ‘Aurora’, as it aims to provide innovative solutions to the recognised capability gap of co-ordinating integrated, efficient and effective spectrum management.”

Darmstadt, London, 18.

Ewart recruited to grow Logica's Scottish business

« Previous « PreviousNext » Next »View GalleryPublished Date: 20 June 2009
By Jane Bradley
IT SERVICES giant Logica has appointed a new general manager for Scotland, more than a year after the departure of Judith Halkerston.
Martin Ewart, former investment director at private equity firm Arkaga, has been taken on to grow the business.

Logica, which employs about 300 people in Scotland and has a turnover from its Scottish division of £40 million, boasts a client list t
ADVERTISEMENThat includes the Scottish Parliament, ScottishPower and BP.

Ewart, who also previously worked as group technology director for HBOS, said: "Logica has a strong record of delivering on commitments. It has never been more important for us to continue to do so."

He added: "Our clients are steering themselves through the economic downturn. We aim to support them and ensure their success."

Joe Hemming, UK chief executive of Logica, commented: "Martin's appointment reflects our desire to further grow and develop business in Scotland.

"During these challenging times, we believe it is important to take a long-term view. Logica's Scottish business is an important element in our global operation.

"This is a time to make sure we have the capability to support our clients through difficult times."

Ewart said he was confident Logica would weather the downturn due to its exposure to a wide range of sectors.

He explained: "We work in the oil and gas industry, transport and financial services. There is such a wide range of companies that we are working with."

Halkerston, who was appointed head of Logica's Scottish operations in February 2006, left the post just over a year ago to become UK managing director for energy, utilities and telecoms.

Last year, Logica cut 1,300 jobs from its 39,000-strong global workforce, but Ewart told The Scotsman there were "no plans" for further cuts.

It also announced in April that it planned to cut a further £10m from its costs in 2009.

Ewart's appointment comes shortly after Jim Martin, Logica's Scottish chairman, announced he was to step down from the company to become Scottish Public Services Ombudsman

48 banks in Turkey go live on Logica’s messaging infrastructure

22 June 2009

Logica, a leading IT and business services company, today announced that 48 banks represented by The Banks’ Association of Turkey (TBB) have upgraded their financial messaging infrastructure using Logica’s high-end messaging system. The Logica platform has been successfully rolled out across 10 international and 38 Turkish banks in the record time of just two months.

Sarah Loveday, managing director, global financial products at Logica, comments: “We are honoured that 48 banks have decided to extend their partnership with us and that the entire high-value payments environment for Turkey runs on Logica infrastructure. Our high-end messaging systems offer flexibility and automation the banks require to substantially reduce manual interventions and costs, ultimately improving customer service.”

The migration to the new Logica financial messaging platform enables the banks to increase Straight Through Processing (STP) rates by automating validation and allowing them to develop their own message validation rules. This increases the reliability of the network, as fewer messages are rejected while optimised testing improves the quality and time to market of new financial instruments. The need for manual intervention is also reduced resulting in lower costs for the banks. By improving the efficiency, reliability and cost-effectiveness of their financial messaging, the banks can deliver a better customer service. Logica’s high-performance, scalable payments system can handle approximately 5 million messages a day.

The Turkish banks have been Logica clients since 1992 and decided to modernise their messaging infrastructure as part of a broader project to upgrade their hardware platform. After a rigorous evaluation process Logica emerged as the supplier of choice. Logica’s close partnership with Turkey’s banking community ensured a rapid and smooth migration. With project teams working along side each other this was a high quality development and system rollout to all the banks coordinated by the TBB.

New leader for Logica in Scotland
Hi-Tech Scotland reporter | Tuesday June 23, 2009

Logica, a leading business and IT services company, has appointed Martin Ewart to the position of General Manager, Scotland.
Martin will be responsible for leading and expanding the business in Scotland. This encompasses driving Logica growth with key clients, developing robust client business plans for all key accounts, and acceleration for Logica’s value proposition deployment.
Martin joins Logica from Arkaga, a private equity firm where he was their Investment Director. During 22 years of experience, he has held senior management positions in Xansa and HBOS. His recent role as Group Technology Director for HBOS saw him oversee major technology change and IT service transformation.
Commenting on his appointment, Martin Ewart said, “I am delighted to be leading Logica in Scotland. Logica has a strong record of delivering on commitments. It has never been more important for us to continue to do so. Our clients are steering themselves through the economic downturn. We aim to support them and ensure their success.”
Joe Hemming, UK CEO said, “Martin’s appointment reflects our desire to further grow and develop business in Scotland. During these challenging times, we believe it is important to take a long term view. Logica’s Scottish business is an important element in our global operation. This is a time to make sure we have the capability to support our clients through difficult times.
“Martin is a leader with an established track record of combining strong customer focus and engendering strong team performance. He has proven experience of driving business performance through the use of Information Technology. His knowledge and expertise will assist at a time when many firms are looking to review their existing business model and implement rapid change.”
Logica has operated in Scotland for almost thirty years and has a strong client base across three key sectors – Energy & Utilities, Public Sector and Financial Services. Clients include the Scottish Government, ScottishPower, BP and the Bank of Scotland. It regularly supports Scottish business and is a regular sponsor of the National Business Awards of Scotland Leadership Award.
The appointment of Martin Ewart coincides with the appointment of Jim Martin, Logica’s Scottish Chairman, as Scottish Public Services Ombudsman for the Scottish Government. This appointment necessitates that Jim will stand down from his role and Martin will effectively take over all his responsibilities. Joe Hemming said, “We would like to thank Jim for the significant contribution that he has made to Logica over the past few years, we congratulate him on his new appointment and wish him every success.”

ICT-reuzen staan stevig overeind
24 juni 2009 | Het Financieele Dagblad

Britain Reviews Its Future In The Space Race

26 June 2009

An expert panel has been asked to lay out the challenges and opportunities facing the British space industry.

The group will deliver its assessment in six months and make recommendations on how it thinks government can help maintain the sector's competitiveness.

The industry turns over £6bn annually and supports some 70,000 jobs.

Science minister Lord Drayson called the sector a "hidden jewel" of UK PLC because of its huge - but largely unrecognised - impact on daily life.

So much of what people do, from watching TV to finding their way in a car, is now dependent on space-borne services - many of which are just taken for granted.

Known as the Space Innovation Growth Team (Space IGT), the new panel will be chaired by Andy Green, the chief executive officer of Logica.

His IT company provides software and systems support to other space firms and so is in a good position to survey the entire industry, from hardware manufacturing to end-user applications.

The IGT will take soundings from across the sector, and from interests that rely on space technology such as entertainment, navigation and climate change.

Next generation

The aim of Mr Green's panel is to define a 20-year strategy for the British space business.

It will attempt to identify the key trends and then list the actions industry and government need to take if they want to fully exploit the changes that are coming.

"Major Tim" will be an ambassador for science and technology
"We're clearly not going to outspend the Americans or the Indians; that's not the answer. What we're going to have to do is work smarter," Mr Green told BBC News.

"We have to think through very carefully what it is that is going to drive wealth creation, and begin to build the skills and the investment that will make that happen."

And he added: "It is technology-driven businesses like the space industry which will provide an absolutely fundamental lever for economic growth in the UK going forward.

"I am particularly concerned to see that we get more young people interested in technology careers, and I think space has a tremendous opportunity to excite people about what technology can do."

This is just the latest IGT established by government. Previous panels have been set up to examine the potential for wealth creation in areas such as biotechnology and the auto industry.

The Space IGT is expected to come forward with some preliminary findings by the end of the year, and then deliver its full report in early 2010.

Esa investment

Lord Drayson already has a report on his desk detailing how the UK can play its part in the changing goals of space exploration.

Soon, he is also likely to call for a consultation on the issue of whether Britain should have a dedicated space agency to co-ordinate government policy; at the moment policy is driven by a collection of "users" comprising the research councils and the various government departments with an interest in space.

British space activity was given a huge boost in May with the appointment of the first UK citizen to the European Space Agency (Esa) Astronaut Corps. Major Tim Peake will become a significant ambassador for science and technology.

Esa will also formally open its new technical centre in Harwell, Oxfordshire, next month.

"Space is a bit of a hidden jewel in the UK," Lord Drayson told BBC News.

"We have a number of hooks to raise its profile - Major Tim, the Harwell centre, the big Herschel launch that we've had recently.

"But what the IGT will do, I think, is give us a great platform to say more about the commercial opportunities and how space can really contribute to the UK economy and jobs in the future."
